As Donald Trump returns to the White House, Akshat Rathi speaks to Yale historian Paul Sabin about whether recent presidential history might hold some lessons on what to expect from the Trump administration’s approach to energy and environmental policy this term. Looking back at the Carter and Reagan years, Sabin explores how present-day Trump priorites– from dismantling government agencies to ramping up oil and gas production–have historical precedent. And Jonathan Lash, who was an environmental lawyer in the Reagan years, explains why he’s feeling déjà vu in these early days of Trump’s second term. In this episode we look back at the moment it was clear the Cold War was essentially over.  The story actually begins in 1985, when Mikhail Gorbachev is elevated to power after a succession of elderly, Communist leaders, all of whom went back to the early days of the Soviet Union.  Leonid Brezhnev had been a hard line, old school, Communist leader, that had been in power throughout the Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and early Reagan Years. He had presided over the Soviet Union's military rise as a Super Power but also had seen the nation's economy become weak.  He, however, was not, and when he took power as part of a team in the 1960's he had consolidated his position and was clearly the man in charge in the Kremlin for most of his 18 years as General Secretary.  Brezhnev died in November 1982 and  would be succeeded by Yuri Andropov ,  the former head of the KGB, for just over 15 months, before dying at age 69.  Andropov would then be succeeded by Constantine Chernenko who would serve for even less time passing away just 13 months after being named General Secretary.  It was then that the protege of Andropov would emerge, and at age 53,it was clear Mikhail Gorbachev was not going to die anytime soon. On the other side of the ball, was Ronald Reagan, a career anticommunist often ridiculed for his unwillingness to work with his Soviet Counterparts. An unfair charge given that all of them had died about once a year since Reagan had been elected.  When Reagan and Gorbachev finally met they had an instant chemistry and thus forged a warm relationship that helped turn the corner on what had been an icy , untrusting , mutual existence between the United States and the Soviet Union since the end of the Second World War. What Reagan and his CIA Advisor William Casey had figured out was that the Soviet Union, while militarily strong, was a dying nation inside its borders and they pushed them to the bargaining table. In Gorbachev, they finally found a Soviet Leader, who was more concerned about the future of his people than the future of it's revolutionary global desires. We will look back in this episode at the relationships that both Reagan and Bush  had with Gorbachev, and the circumstances that led to this meeting in Malta on the heels of the fall of the Berlin Wall, when Gorbachev was trying to negotiate a way to save his struggling nation. This episode was produced over one year ago, and is dedicated in memory to CBS News Correspondent Bill Plante, who died at that time we were producing this episode, and who also produced for CBS News one of the historic  reports we used for this podcast.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

It’s time once again to hop into the only time machine they ever would entertain to budget at BTSC...my brain’s Delorean. Today, our trip into Steelers yesteryear takes us back to the day when a crash of a Spantax charter-flight from Madrid to New York claimed 50 people and injured 110 more, Chicago had the country’s top single with “Hard For Me To Say I’m Sorry”, movie-goers were falling for Richard Gere and Debra Winger in An Officer and a Gentleman, and the football world was bracing for a long work stoppage that was two weeks away. But while football was still happening for the time being, there was hope once again in the Steel City that the glory years of the 1970s could return after two playoff-free seasons. The Steelers only had 27 players returning from their Super Bowl 14 champion team, but younger players like David Little, Frank Pollard, Walter Abercrombie, Rick Woods, Calvin Sweeney and Mike Merriweather — combined with legendary holdovers Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann, Franco Harris, John Stallworth, Mike Webster, Jack Lambert, Donnie Shell, Mel Blount and Jack Ham — excited fans in Pittsburgh. Chuck Noll still held the reins, but big changes were made as the defense switched for the first time to a 3-4 alignment and the offense was adapting to Bradshaw’s age with more of a West Coast approach. Their opponent was a familiar Super Bowl rival and a team that went to the previous two NFC Title Games. Tom Landry was looking to his so-called “America’s Team” to get back to the big game. Going in, the Cowboys had won 18 straight games at Texas Stadium. However, the Steelers had won the last six matchups between the two. One streak among the two legendary clubs was about to end that night on Monday Night Football. Flash back to that awesome classic on the Steelers Retro Show and join BTSC’s Tony Defeo and Bryan Anthony Davis as they go back in time and relive this memorable matchup. It was also disclosed that some of the money from the arms deal with Iran had been covertly and illegally funneled into a fund to aid the right-wing Contras counter-revolutionary groups seeking to overthrow the socialist Sandinista government of Nicaragua. The Iran–Contra affair, as it became known, did serious damage to the Reagan presidency. The investigations were effectively halted when President George H. W. About the Lecture: George Washington was inaugurated as the nation's first president on April 30, 1789, taking the helm of an executive branch with a mandate to execute, and more importantly, define, the nebulous powers of article two of the United States Constitution. What was true of the founding of America as a nation was especially true of the American presidency – George Washington was the “indispensable man.” Washington was the only national figure who was known to his fellow citizens and trusted by them to safely wield the powers the president was granted. Suffice it to say that these powers were unlikely to have been granted without the assumption by the delegates at the Constitutional Convention, and by those who attended the state ratifying conventions, that George Washington would be the first president. Washington understood that the precedents he set would shape the presidency and the nation for as long as the American experiment survived. About the Speaker: Stephen F. Knott is a Professor of National Security Affairs at the United States Naval War College. He is a co-author of The Reagan Years and At Reagan's Side: Insiders' Recollections from Sacramento to the White House. This lecture occurred at IWP on May 8th 2017. The contrast between the treatment meted out to Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama confirms that two set of rules prevail when it comes to scholarly assessments of American presidents. Democratic presidents are excused when it comes to assertive national security policies, while Republican presidents are deemed "lawless." Obama is the most recent beneficiary of this double standard that distorts scholarly assessments of the nation's chief executives. About the speaker: Stephen F.   Our last Saturday Webinar of the 2015-16 school year took place on Saturday, May 7, with Ronald Reagan as our focus. Teachers from around the country joined our panelists for a discussion about Reagan the person, president, and thinker. Questions ranged from his core political beliefs to his transformation from an FDR Democrat to a Republican, and included questions about both foreign and domestic policy. A good deal of attention was paid to his views on Communism and his enduring belief that it was an oppressive, morally bankrupt system that could be made to fail, and without war. Additionally, his genuine desire to eliminate - not just reduce - world arsenals of nuclear weapons was discussed, in the context of his personal outreach to and relations with Soviet leaders, especially Mikhail Gorbachev. The following books are recommended for additional reading about Reagan and his era: Transforming America: Politics and Culture During the Reagan Years The Age of Reagan: The Conservative Counterrevolution: 1980-1989 The Essential Ronald Reagan: A Profile in Courage, Justice, and Wisdom The full archive, with documents and video, is available here. Join us, starting in August, for our 2016-17 Saturday Webinar series, 'Landmark Supreme Court Cases,' beginning with Marbury v. Madison.
