There are several critical aspects of sales that directly impact your ability to lead your team or your business. Selling yourself is one of them. Employees today are closely evaluating what they are or are not getting from their jobs. Estimates are that disengaged employees cost US companies alone close to $500 billion annually. In fact, Gallup reports that only 15% of employees are engaged. It doesn't stop there. Estimates are that up to 2/3 of leaders are not engaged or actively disengaged. Add all of this up, and the result could be a volatile cocktail that stifles an organization's growth and negatively impacts the bottom line. Given the current state, what can organizations do to create cultures of empowerment and well-being? You have a brand. Yes, leaders, I'm speaking to you. Entrepreneurs, I'm absolutely speaking to you. Your brand is an extension of you. It represents you. It lingers on whether you are present in the moment or not. One of the most damaging situations for leaders and entrepreneurs today is the default brand. This is a brand that develops without intentional thought and attention. Joining us this week is Brandmaster extraordinaire Christopher Andrade. Join Roz Jones, Mireille Toulekima, and myself as we talk with Christopher about how to command your brand. About Christopher: Christopher Andrade is an Arizona native and the owner and creative director of the commercial communications boutiques Neo Media Branding and Sound Motion Vision. Christopher mentored under legendary Disney creatives Ron Swartz and Roger Persoll and Marriott Hotels brand guru Mike Heil. He has a passion for persuasive engagement psychology, comedy in every discipline, is a classically trained commercial illustrator, voice actor, writer, power-brand consultant, film/television and event production designer, strategic advertising-marketing director, and media viceroy for constructive organizations and blue-chip brands in entertainment, media, fintech, communications, broadcast, public relations, healthcare, real estate, luxury resort, and travel, as well as helping solopreneurs and charitable/philanthropic entities. He is the creator of offsite-total immersion executive training experiences, “The Diversity Advantage,” “No Limits,” ”Fiscal and Physical Fitness,” "Rocket Popcorn,” and “Brand GUSTO!” He lives and works in Peoria, AZ with Bridget, his much-smarter and ever-gorgeous high school sweetheart, and their daughter Chrysta (who just earned her master's degree in Psychopharmacology, from the University of Colorado, Boulder), where he writes and performs dubious comedy and designs props for film and television “because it's free of politics." ____________________________________________________ Learn more and register for Leadership Above the Grind Mentoring and Coaching Academy. http://eliteleaders.net “LEADERSHIP ABOVE THE GRIND™ (LATG) and The mentoring and coaching ACADEMY make it possible to reach YOUR LEADERS with the TOP-RATED, CULTURE-SHIFTING support they need to do their best work – AND ALL THAT THAT IMPLIES – amid new and ever-shifting business realities. Why do DEI initiatives miss the mark? Two reasons are self-regulation and self-awareness. Two terms that sound like they should be so much easier than they actually are. Often DEI initiatives are focused on what we can count instead of how we feel. In this episode of The Coffee with Rhonda Show, we discuss why diversity, equity, and inclusion often do not lead to the desired outcome of belonging. As a bonus discussion, we'll also explore why our emotions can sometimes feel like a runaway train leading to behaviors that seem reasonable at the moment but can have long-term undesired consequences (ie: The Slap). Join us in welcoming back to the show, special guest Casey Lankow as we discuss what we get wrong about belonging and strategies for creating accepting and authentic cultures. ______________________________________________________ Learn more and register for Leadership Above the Grind Mentoring and Coaching Academy. http://eliteleaders.net “LEADERSHIP ABOVE THE GRIND™ (LATG) and The mentoring and coaching ACADEMY make it possible to reach YOUR LEADERS with the TOP-RATED, CULTURE-SHIFTING support they need to do their best work – AND ALL THAT THAT IMPLIES – amid new and ever-shifting business realities. In recent studies, 86% of employees and executives cite the lack of effective collaboration and communication as the main causes of workplace failures. We all communicate every day. Yet, somehow effective communication that can be measured by results can feel overwhelming and elusive. Having a leadership title does not automatically improve your communication. The improvement only comes through intentional reflection and deeper learning. But, who has time for that? This week on The Coffee with Rhonda Show, let's discuss effective communication. What is it and how can we lead ourselves to better communication? Joining Roz Jones, Mireille Toulekima, and myself at the coffee table is Special Guest Michael Wader. About Michael: "Every day, 1000's of COMPETENT technicians, administrators, and service providers are promoted into leadership roles, and they fail, and it is not their fault. They become INCOMPETENT leaders because no one taught them how to lead themselves first and then lead teams successfully. Continuous improvement is not just for processes – it is for Leaders too. The adjectives you use to describe a problem will be repeated by your workers. The attitude you demonstrate about needed changes will be repeated by your followers. STOP and think – am I leading by example and do I really buy into my own actions. How can you expect to lead others successfully if you cannot lead yourself first? This is the place successful leadership begins, the basics, the fundamentals of looking into the mirror each day and liking what we see. Five decades after Lyndon Johnson first unveiled his lofty vision of a Great Society, politicians and pundits are still arguing about what he accomplished, and what he didn’t. This final installment will look at the legacy of LBJ's Great Society through the lens on one of its most enduring and popular programs — Head Start. Today, the Head Start program is alive and well, and so deeply woven into the fabric of American life that few know of its roots in the Great Society, or of the conflict and controversy that plagued many of its early programs. Features Alice O’Connor, Professor of History and Director of the Blum Center on Poverty, Inequality, and Democracy at the University of California Santa Barbara, and commentary from historians Rhonda Y. Williams, Josh Zeitz, and Julian Zelizer. Learn more at LBJsGreatSociety.org.
By his own account the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was Lyndon Johnson’s greatest achievement – the jewel in the crown of the Great Society, and widely considered the most effective piece of civil rights legislation in American history. This episode focuses on the extraordinarily eventful eight-month period — January to August 1965 — when the battle for Voting Rights was joined and ultimately fought to a successful conclusion. The outcome was hard won, and in doubt up until the last frantic weeks of negotiation and maneuvering in the wake of the bloody protests in Selma, Alabama. We hear from historian Rhonda Y. Williams, the John L. Seigenthaler Chair in American History at Vanderbilt University, about the complex and precarious alliance forged between the President on the inside, and Dr. Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement on the outside. Includes interview excerpts from Washington University Libraries, drawn from the Henry Hampton Collection. This digitized resource includes complete video interviews with Civil Rights Movement leaders, recorded for the influential and award-winning documentary film, Eyes on the Prize. Though you might've been raised not to talk about politics at Thanksgiving dinner, food itself has always been political. The questions of who grows it—and for whom—are loaded, especially in the United States, a country that took its farmland from indigenous people and built its wealth from the labor of slaves. These imbalances of access and ownership have persisted through contemporary times, with food deserts and stagnating wages restricting what poor people eat. On November 7, Harper's Magazine and UNC Press presented a conversation between Rhonda Y. Williams, a historian and the series editor of UNC Press's “Justice, Power, and Politics” books; Lana Dee Povitz, author of Stirrings: How Activist New Yorkers Ignited a Movement for Food Justice, about the history of food activism in the United States; and Monica M. White, author of Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement, which tells the story of Fannie Lou Hamer's Freedom Farms Cooperative. In this episode, the three academics discuss historical and modern inequalities surrounding food accessibility and production, as well as the power of telling the long-obfuscated stories of farmers.
