The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
"Our lives are woven together in a fabric, but the connections that make society strong also make it vulnerable."—Threads (1984) For the 18th TMR Movie Roundtable we welcome back our good friends Antony Rotunno, Frank Johnson and Mark Campbell for another of our four-way discussions, this time on the disturbing (because uncomfortably realistic) nuclear-apocalyptic BBC/Nine Network (Australia) film Threads from 1984. Written by Barry Hines ("A Kestral for a Knave", 1968 / "Kes", 1969) and directed by Mick Jackson ("The Bodyguard", 1992), Threads is a merciless exploration—supported by considerable scientific and government policy research—of the devastating physical, psychological and societal effects of thermonuclear war. Set in the UK city of Sheffield during a period of spiralling tensions between the United States of America and the former Soviet Union, Threads takes the viewer on a uniquely challenging journey: from kitchen sink drama to pseudo-documentary, as we witness the lives of everyday people (just like ourselves) being destroyed, or changed forever, by the blast, heat and radiation of a thermonuclear event. (Please be warned: Threads is a disturbing film—it's supposed to be—but it's also a very important film, which I think as many people (adults) as possible should see. But, again, please do be prepared to watch something that might affect you deeply.) Join us as we discuss the production and consider its message during this period of rising international tensions in the world today. [For show notes please visit https://themindrenewed.com]

Three days after Tim Walz called us Nazis and two days after Biden called us garbage, top Harris surrogate Mark Cuban calls women who support Trump weak and unintelligent. Listen to the propaganda that precipitated Cuban's comments on The View, which may have been sparked by some BLISTERING new polling out of Pennsylvania suggesting Trump now has a stunning 5 point lead. Safely delivering freight on time & undamaged is difficult even under the best of circumstances. And while professional driving is among the most common jobs in the US, it remains among the most dangerous. But it's getting harder. Much harder.Everyday we see news of nuclear verdicts. These verdicts are among the largest concerns for truckers & motor carriers. They impact everyone: from shippers to brokers to motor carriers to consumers. While not a legal term, nuclear verdicts generally describe any verdict exceeding $10M. These are not those verdicts.Increasingly the trucking industry is facing verdicts exceeding $100M. Manufacturers, trucking companies, and, without Supreme Court intervention, brokerages, now see the dire situation unfolding before them. I have taken to characterizing these as thermonuclear verdicts: judgments that exceed $100M. Judgments that will bankrupt nearly anyone that touches them. Woe be to the transportation industry. If you're not paying attention yet, you will be.Where will I be next?Join me at the Journal of Commerce Inland Distribution Conference, Sept. 30-Oct. 2nd in Chicago. I will be speaking about Post Employment Restrictive Covenants. Next up is DATCON, Oct. 22nd-24th in Kansas City. My audience can save $200 on tickets using code "armchair200". Next is the Broker-Carrier Summit, Oct. 23rd- 25th in Fort Worth. Finally, I will be at Freightwaves' F3: Future of Freight Festival, Nov. 19th-21st in Chattanooga! This program is brought to you by DAT Freight & Analytics. Since 1978, DAT has helped truckers & brokers discover more available loads. Whether you're heading home or looking for your next adventure, DAT has the data! New users of DAT can save 10% off for the first 12 months by following the links below. For Truckers, DAT One Pro gives you access to tri-haul & 15-day rate as opposed to 30-day rate. For Brokers, DAT One Select gives you access to Market Conditions, Exact Match alarms & more. Waging and winning a nuclear war have been called “thinking about the unthinkable” but that's exactly what Edward Kaplan and I discussed in our interview about his recent book, The End of Victory: Prevailing in the Thermonuclear Age (Cornell UP, 2022). The current Dean of the School of Strategic Landpower at the US Army War College, Kaplan recounts the costs of failure in nuclear war through the work of the most secret deliberative body of the National Security Council, the Net Evaluation Subcommittee (NESC). From 1953 onward, US leaders wanted to know as precisely as possible what would happen if they failed in a nuclear war―how many Americans would die and how much of the country would remain. The NESC told Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy what would be the result of the worst failure of American strategy―a maximum-effort surprise Soviet nuclear assault on the United States. Kaplan details how NESC studies provided key information for presidential decisions on the objectives of a war with the USSR and on the size and shape of the US military. The subcommittee delivered its annual reports in a decade marked by crises in Berlin, Quemoy and Matsu, Laos, and Cuba, among others. During these critical moments and day-to-day containment of the USSR, the NESC's reports offered the best estimates of the butcher's bill of conflict and of how to reduce the cost in American lives. Taken with the intelligence community's assessment of the probability of a surprise attack, the NESC's work framed the risks of US strategy in the chilliest years of the Cold War. The End of Victory reveals how all policy decisions run risks―and ones involving military force run grave ones―though they can rarely be known with precision. Andrew O. Pace is a historian of the US in the world who specializes in the moral fog of war. He is currently a DPAA Research Partner Fellow at the University of Southern Mississippi and a co-host of the Diplomatic History Channel on the New Books Network. He is also working on a book about the reversal in US grand strategy from victory at all costs in World War II to peace at any price in the Vietnam War. Andrew O. The Christopher Nolan's film “Oppenheimer” was a huge hit, doubling box office projections for its opening weekend. The movie is based on the life of the controversial “father of the atomic bomb,” J. Robert Oppenheimer. However, Thomas Reifer says the film raises many critical issues, none more urgent than the vast increase in destructive power that came with the making of atomic and then thermonuclear weapons. “Unfortunately, the film doesn't take the time to go into the period of U.S. testing of the H-Bomb, which along with the earlier atomic explosions, spread radioactive waste, and led to the infamous Lucky Dragon incident.” To learn more of his mission click the following link. https://www.tni.org/en/profile/tom-reiferhttp://www.yourlotandparcel.org
