Today our expert guest is Corey Blake, the founder and CEO of Round Table Companies, publisher of Conscious Capitalism Press, as well as a speaker, artist, and storyteller. He's won 15 independent publishing awards and has been featured on the cover of The Wallstreet Journal as well as inside The New York Times, USA Today, Inc. Magazine, Forbes, and Wired. Corey's work has always been about helping people — and now the world needs that help more than ever. Since 2018, he has been working with PayActive to solve the paycheck-to-paycheck crisis that is hitting America. When the coronavirus started to hit the US, many people who were already living paycheck-to-paycheck were getting hours reduced or losing their jobs. When he saw how this was impacting the world, he knew that this was an area that he needed to contribute to more. Talking with people during the crisis, he started to notice some themes that have rippled through the different communities he interacts with. Amongst younger entrepreneurs, there was a quick reflex to save themselves: lay off employees quickly and mercilessly in order to stay afloat. Meanwhile, in the conscious capitalism community (in which Corey is a pillar member), there has been a tremendous amount of compassion for the workers. When Corey was still in the space of not knowing how to be of service to the community, he took part in a call for a leadership academy and it finally clicked. He started offering vulnerability art installations at conferences and events that were all about taking people from isolation to connection, and they worked. When you look at one of these vulnerability walls, all the anxiety about how different people are melts away; we realize we are all fragile individuals who are dealing with problems. Almost nobody alive has ever lived through something like this in their lifetime, and we don't know when it's going to end or what life will look like on the other side of it. That often forces us to sit with our thoughts, think about who we are today, and rediscover our identity. Corey offers some strategies people can use to purposefully find their new identity and make sense of their place in this: Finding your purpose is usually done over a longer period of time. It requires constant investigation, a relentless state of inquiry, and awareness is essential for picking out that purpose. Watching ourselves from the outside throughout this crisis is incredibly helpful. If you can watch yourself as an observer, it's easier to extend some grace. Ask different questions: Who is that version of me that's showing up? What else is available? What is the universe saying to me? List all of the things your company does or owns and decide if the world needs those differently than how you usually utilize them. If you want to take action but you don't know what to do, this is the work that has to be done. Sit with yourself and ask good questions. And if you find something that you can do, you need to start putting it into action right away. The world needs what you can provide. The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Extend ourselves some grace right now. Be kind to ourselves. We're all having experiences we've never had before, probably at a compounding ratio that can be so overwhelming. We can be unkind in moments. We can be super judgemental in moments. We can want to come to blows with our spouse or our kids or our animals as we're all cooped up together. Ultimately, the more we can extend kindness and grace to ourselves as we go through this, the more we will do so outwardly.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. When vulnerability is core to your brand, what do you do with an abundance of time? You create an abundance of space. TEDx speaker, CEO of Round Table Companies and creator of the Virtual Vulnerability Wall, Corey Blake joins us for his third appearance on Influencer Networking Secrets to talk about the power of walls that talk. Corey’s company created the Virtual Vulnerability Wall as a place people could expel their inner fear, chaos, ugliness and brokenness – to be rendered beautifully through stylized graphics and calligraphy by his graphic artistry team. The results are as gripping and gorgeous as when human beings drop the façade and take ownership for their failures – it opens the door to healing, correction and renewal. “There’s something about letting things go, that creates psychological relief. When people return to the wall and see it as art … it shifts from something hidden to a moment of ownership.” – Corey Blake In this episode: How creating space for people to release their darkness into the light makes beauty from ashes The challenge we face bringing vulnerability to a world that isn’t used to it The importance of forgiving yourself when you own your behavior Corey’s misinterpreted “sidelining” during COVID-19, and how you don’t need to be a nurse or truck driver to be “on the front lines” Resources Enter Your Submission for the Virtual Vulnerability Wall HERE:
Corey Blake is the publisher of Conscious Capitalism Press and the founder and CEO of Round Table Companies (RTC), a storytelling company. Prior to starting RTC in 2005, Corey was a professional actor in Los Angeles, acting in one of the 50 greatest Super Bowl commercials of all time and guest starring on numerous popular television shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Shield, and Joan of Arcadia. His work with books and graphic novels has yielded 15 independent publishing awards and mentions/features in the NY Times, WSJ, USA Today, Inc., Forbes, and Wired. Corey is also the creator of the Vulnerability Wall and the Vulnerability is Sexy™ card game. His documentary of the same name won 2017 Addy and Hermes awards for branded content. Corey started his career as an actor in LA and within a few years was on the path to success with several high profile commercials and roles in primetime TV shows under his belt. He also began to produce his own small projects behind the camera, but something wasn’t feeling right to him. He was drawn to making his own way and the acting route was not one of autonomy. He moved to Chicago and started his own company and began other creative projects, leaving acting behind and hasn’t looked back. Today, he works with authors and leaders to promote their work and brands with his team at the Round Table Companies. He feels he is able to blend his creative instincts with his deeper needs to put his stamp on all that he does. In this episode we discuss: How Corey caught a break in the acting industry and then moved into directing and producing. His experience appearing in an award-winning SuperBowl Commercial, a primetime TV series, and a major motion picture. How Corey is an avid supporter and sponsor of Conscious Capitalism and has appeared on their main stage at the last seven national events. Pivotal Moments: Raised as an only son in a Jewish household, was showered with attention and convinced that he was the star of the world. At the age of five, his mother was diagnosed with depression which completely destroyed his peaceful world. He quickly learned how to how to read the energy of a room and take cues from those around him, sparking his career as a performer. Discovered choir and theater during high school and felt that this was his identity. Studied theater in university then went out to LA to pursue a career in acting. Got pulled into the commercial world and although he was making decent money, hated the fact that he was using his skills to convince kids to do stupid things. A passion to do something with more purpose began to build up so he got a group of expert actors and professionals together and took them all up to Mammoth, California for a week to learn all aspects of storytelling. At the end of the week, they had some high-quality film scripts. Created a filming company and, using the film scripts they had created, made a short, high-quality film. Today our expert guest, Corey Blake, shares two unique but powerful tools for both personal and business development: storytelling and vulnerability. Corey is the Publisher of Conscious Capitalism Press and the founder & CEO of Round Table Companies, where he has spent over a decade helping business leaders use storytelling to transform themselves and their organizations. Corey spent a past life as an actor, acting in everything from commercials to movies to TV. But after he became disillusioned with acting, he started to shift to more behind-the-scenes roles and getting into the storytelling aspect of entertainment. However, he felt the need to do something a little more predictable or “normal,” so he started pursuing writing jobs. And when people started approaching him looking for help writing their books, “suddenly, this thing that was very practical became creative.” One of the first books he worked on was Robert Renteria's From the Barrio to the Board Room, and seeing the way that book inspired people to change their lives solidified Corey's new focus: using stories to connect people and help them reshape their own identity. Today, Corey primarily helps businesses tell their stories. “Everyone who starts or leads a business is an artist, and they're using that business as a canvas, essentially painting a version of the world that they want to see,” Corey says. “That's a story worth telling. That's a story worth sharing.” The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Leadership is a lifetime lifestyle commitment... We get the companies we deserve; businesses that we build are a reflection of who we are. If we want to have more impact in the world, we have to start with ourselves. So committing to doing our own personal work on this journey expands our capabilities, as business people, immensely, and it is a lifestyle commitment.” -- Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Corey has been storytelling for two decades since he graduated from Millikin University with a BFA in theatre in 1996. His epiphany moment in storytelling came after he played the lead in a show at Millikin called “Jeffrey.” Three months after the show closed, Corey was called by a theatre 90 minutes away who was putting on the same show, but whose lead had fallen ill. Corey was asked to drive down immediately, block out the play that afternoon with their actors, and put on the show that evening. With the help of his previous director, Corey performed the leading role, on stage for the entire two-hour show, in front of 300 people that night. He was never afraid of taking the big swing again.Working in Los Angeles for a decade, Corey was the face and voice behind a dozen Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 brands as a commercial and voiceover actor (his work won Belding, Addy, Cannes, and London International Advertising awards), before working as a film producer and director, as an author and award-winning publisher, and now as the founder and president of Round Table Companies.Check out Corey’s TEDx talk, Vulnerability is Sexy and keep an eye out for Corey's HERMES and ADDY award winning short documentary by the same name.Corey is the co-author of numerous books, including Edge! Today's Guest: Corey Michael Blake, CEO, Round Table Companies, Smarter Comics Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of 47-year-old fanboys who could really stand to take a bath and develop some practical business skills besides knowing how many comics fit snugly in a longbox… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! It’s been a while since business writer Daniel Pink was a guest on Mr. Media to talk about his first graphic novel, Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need. That book was intended for an audience of job seekers who lacked some basic skills needed to succeed in the modern workplace. They were also people who weren’t likely to buy and read Pink’s nonfiction, picture-less narratives such A Whole New Mind or Free Agent Nation. COREY MICHAEL BLAKE audio excerpt: "I found Chris Anderson's email address. I said, 'We're interested in taking your book, The Long Tail, and introducing it to comic book fans.' In 24 hours I had an answer: 'Let's talk to my agent.' It hit his sweet spot. He loves to be an innovator ans he is a comic book fan." Apparently Pink was on to something – Johnny Bunko has since been translated into 14 different languages. Now a company called Round Table is working with SmarterComics to turn Pink’s one-off project into an industry. It has produced graphic novels from six respected, bestselling business experts and is marketing them to an audience unlikely to read 300 pages of text but probably willing to invest the time and effort into a 50-page comic book full of immediately useful knowledge, told in an entertaining fashion. At the top of the list of SmarterComics’ initial release this April 2011 is The Long Tail by Wired magazine editor Chris Anderson. Also noteworthy is an adaptation of the 2,500-year-old The Art of War by Sun Tzu, a classic battleplan for success found on the shelf of every modern CEO. I know a little about educational comics myself, having written the biography of Will Eisner, who started the whole genre back in World War II with Army Motors. So I thought it would be interesting to have Round Table CEO Corey Michael Blake on the show to talk about his new enterprise. Corey Blake comes on today's episode to share with us the value in being openly vulnerable in today's world, how that's impacted the success of his business and relationships, and how he's spreading the word. In 2005 he started Round Table Companies, which is a story telling company that supports organizations, CEO's and thought leaders. Corey believes every successful company or person has a compelling story to tell, and he helps them verbalize it in a way that's captivating, appealing and leads to deeper connections with their audiences. Getting back to Core Values, RTC actually has seven of them: Brilliance Love Momentum Honesty Community Growth Courage Corey went into detail on three of these values: Brilliance allows for a black and white approach to the quality of work they produce. “Is it brilliant or not? Do we feel magic in it?” If the answer to either of these is “no”, then it's back to the drawing board. Love it! The staff at RTC and their clients are challenged to lean into Courage in all the work they do, to dig in there and do things that might scare them. Momentum for any creative agency is key in finding the magic and poetry in everything they do. What a fortuitous coincidence, “Momentum” is my theme for the week! Corey practices what he preaches in a big way, and actually has an executive coach on retainer for his staff of 40 to take advantage of at any time. He firmly believes in developing himself and his team and notes: “The company is only as strong as I am and the company only has the capacity that I represent as its leadership. As we continue to grow, that expands to the capacity of other people on the leadership team… ultimately we'll get the company that we deserve.” In addition to running RTC, Corey is fully invested in the “Vulnerability is Sexy” movement that he's created. It's a metaphor for the work they do in the world by supporting people that invite their audience into a loving space where they get to know each other's humanity. The movement is catching on and gaining momentum (there's that core value again). “Vulnerability is Sexy” started back in 2014 when Corey and his team created a concept called the Vulnerability Wall after seeing how people at conferences didn't take risks until the end when it was time to leave. The wall is a huge, blank canvas on display and people can drop their insecurities, secrets, shames and vulnerabilities in a box and his artists will turn them into beautiful representations on the canvas. This helps people relieve themselves of some of their burdens and to quickly honor each other's humanity. “When we have the strength to be vulnerable, there's an opportunity for an alignment check.” Ultimately, if you're interested in growth and living a life of purpose, then displaying your vulnerability will guide you to this even though there may be some pain associated with it. Corey's a super insightful, caring and open person and we really enjoyed our discussion, as I'm sure you will as well. SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: How does Corey promote personal growth within his company? What led him to create the “Vulnerability is Sexy” movement? Who inspires Corey to be the person he is? How did Corey's Tedx talk come about? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How Corey plans to bring more personal development strategies to his staff How you can be more connected or in-touch and reflective when conversing with others How an executive coach can help your staff and company grow both personally and professionally Why and how Corey took his “Vulnerability is Sexy” idea and turned it into a full-on movement What the concept of “follow the invite” is all about Plus much more… DON'T STOP HERE… Round Table Companies Vulnerability is Sexy T-shirt Vulnerability Wall on RTC's Pinterest Page “Vulnerability is Sexy” TedxSalisbury Talk Twitter | Email ADDITIONAL RESOURCES Stagen Leadership Academy
