I just got back from a week in Iceland so naturally I had to make a mix with music from Icelandic artists. The usual suspects are here - Sigur Ros, Johann Johannsson, Bjork, Olafur Arnalds, along with some new additions. It still boggles my mind that the tiny island has produced such amazing music. But now, having been there, I guess it makes a bit more sense because the place is unique. The landscape and spirit seeps into your mind and body like hot water through porous volcanic rock. It's impossible not to fall in love with the people and the natural beauty. Hopefully this mix can be your own mini vaca to Iceland. Cheers! A million miles from Earth, the James Webb Space Telescope has arrived at it's parking spot at Lagrange Point #2, the perfect place to search the heavens for faint light from the most distant observable galaxies in the early universe. This mix tells the story of the Webb observatory as it seeks to "Unfold the Universe." The telescope, like its mission, is big. When expanded to full size, it can't fit into the nose cone of any available launch vehicle. One of Webb's main components, sunshield, is the area of a tennis court. It was carefully folded and packed to fit inside the Ariane 5 rocket. In space, the sunshield will expand and separate into five distinct layers. The telescope's primary mirror, the largest mirror ever flown into space, is also too wide to fit into the rocket in one piece. So it is segmented into 18 hexagonal pieces on a hinged structure so it can fold up for launch and unfold in space. That unfolding is part of the themes of this mix and can be seen in track titles like "Tentative Unfolding", "Watching It Unfold" and "Unfold pt. 2." The story of the Webb telescope is told in other tracks such as "Lagrange Point" "Gathering the Starglow" "Looking Into the Past" and "The Light Beyond." Unfold the universe with the Webb Space Telescope & Low Light Mixes. Cheers! Which team will rise to the top in this week’s game? *Correction: Matt had a slip of the tongue when talking about Marie Curie. Ok so we are on Passover break this week, and Erika told me it'd be cool if I played some of my signature BEATS by HELLER for our episode. This is kind of a techno mix but it goes a little experimental. Totally cool if it's not your thing, but if it is holler at me! So this is a jam that I did with Lumpee Le AKA Freddy Ruxpin a few weeks back. His brother let him use the notorious SH-101, which he found in a dumpster in Nagoya, Japan. I was getting those synth bass grooves from the Korg Volca Bass, those EPIC 808 kicks from the TR-8, and the synth lines from my dad's old CZ-101, which I hooked up to an SQ-1 sequencer. Also used my SP-404 sampler. I remixed it all in Ableton, so added a couple of new grooves, but all those textures are from the gear. Hope you enjoy! Chag Sameach! Gary Busey fights his way through ninjas, robots, clowns and spice girls in this very special episode
This week we'll look at beauty and terror as seen in the mythology of women. Stories though out history mostly told by men of power and tragedy, love and treachery featuring the likes of Aphrodite, Xi Shi, the Gorgon Medusa and Goddess Kali. These tales are endlessly fascinating yet rarely illuminating of the lives of actual women. So we'll hear from six songs offering a modern twist to these myths. They come from Jen Gloeckner, First Rebirth, Zoe Leela, Swoon, A Beautiful Curse and Ruxpin.
The entire crew offers their take on the quicktime event fest that is Ninja Blade. Craig (prof dresser) checks out the recently discounted Penny Arcade and digs up Lego Indiana Jones. Jeremy (Superfro33) gives his thoughts on the Vin Diesel vehicle Wheelman and questions why the new Leisure Suit Larry game ever even saw the light of day. Sean (seanyxxx) once again rocked some Burnout Paradise and took the Puzzle Quest Galactrix demo for a spin. And it's all wrapped up with a timely discussion on....Fraggle Rock?!?
