Welcome to Part 2 of our interview with Kieran Farrell. In Part 1 we spoke about his part in Daniel Dubois' stunning destruction of Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium, how he came to work with the heavyweight knockout artist and where he thinks DDD is going next. Here, Kieran talks about growing up in Heywood, also known as Monkey Town (you'll find out why, and there's an Irish connection). Kieran has an Irish connection of his own, with his people coming from here, and he found boxing at an early age and quickly got to know the big dogs on the Manchester scene, from Michael Gomez to Ricky Hatton. His bout with another Manchester idol, Anthony Crolla, changed his life. Farrell said he'd die for the English belt, and he almost did. The young boxer suffered a subdural hematoma during the fight and was rushed to hospital, where the doctors removed 30 per cent of his brain during life-saving surgery. Farrell, who'd become a dad for the first time just two weeks previously, earned just two grand for the fight. At the time Farrell was boxing out of John Breen's Gym in Belfast, where he'd worked alongside the likes of Paul McCloskey, the Conlan brothers and Andy Murray. He retains a link to the island to this day and his story is the epitome of The Rocky Road. I'd say he'd do it all again if he could. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Name one reason, seriously, just one reason why you shouldn't get a pet monkey. No, I really mean it: ONE SINGLE REASON. One. Just one. You can't. You cannot. It cannot be done. As long as you ignore all the many, many, many, numerous reasons why you shouldn't.

Link to support us is below. We traversed the Netherlands for this one. From Amsterdam all the way to Breda where I had the opportunity to chop it up with Harun. Harun is an exceptional human being and amazing coach that I personally enjoyed speaking to a lot! We arrived at the gym to participate in a training with none other then Reinier the Ridder. The gym which is above a Monkey Town so the first temptation of the day had to be fought of right at arrival. As we enter we are greeted by a gorilla statue. This set the mood for what was awaiting us inside. The training was awesome and the vibe was amazing and that's something that added to my interest in the coaches of Combat Brothers! After the training we had a talk and man there was so much interesting about this man that I immediately planned a podcast session with him. I tried to ask the questions that would put into to words that specific vibe you get from an awesome gym and it was a sound succes! Hope you guys enjoy! To learn more about Harun and his work check out there website at https://combatbrothers.nl/Love you all :) Julio VinkeSupport the show

Growing up, Rachel Held Evans was a fiercely enthusiastic evangelizer for her faith, the kind of kid who relished the chance to sit next to an atheist. But when she experienced doubt, that sense of certainty began to crumble. “We went to all these conferences about how to defend your faith, how to have an answer for what you believe,” her sister Amanda Held told Eliza Griswold. “That's why it was particularly unsettling to have questions, because we were taught to have answers.” Held Evans began to blog and then wrote a string of best-sellers about her faith, beginning with “Evolving in Monkey Town,” in which she separated the Jesus she believed in from the conservative doctrine she was raised with. Her work spoke to the millions of Christians who have left evangelical churches since 2006. “There's this common misperception that either you are a conservative evangelical Christian or . . . you become agnostic or atheist,” Griswold explains, but many Christians were turning away from politics and still retaining their faith. She calls Held Evans “the patron saint of this emerging movement.” After Held Evans died, at thirty-seven, after a sudden illness, her final, incomplete manuscript was finished by a friend, Jeff Chu. Griswold travelled to Held Evans's home town of Dayton, Tennessee, to meet with her widower, Dan Evans, as well as Chu and others. “I think people resonate so much with her work [because] she was giving words that people couldn't say themselves,” Evans says. “It's not going to stop for them just because Rachel died. There's going to be one less traveller. One less person to translate for them. But there's more people born every day.”

On this Thanksgiving week, and on the occasion of the release of WHOLEHEARTED FAITH, we re-release Ken's conversation with Peter Held. When Rachel died in May of 2019, she left behind a nearly finished manuscript. This month, with Jeff Chu's able assistance, that book has been released. On this podcast, Ken has the honor of a long talk with Professor Peter Held, Rachel Held-Evan's Dad. The world grieved just last year when a shocking, mysterious illness took this author, inspirational speaker, counselor, and Mom to two young children. Ken read several of her books - he was/is a fan of her life and work. Dr. Held opens up about his own background and then reflects on Rachel's growing up years and her start as a thinker and writer. Ken and Pete walk through the abrupt, dark days of her illness and then the tidal of love and support that rolled in from all corners of the globe. Ken reads from the blog he posted just after the news of Rachel's untimely passing. SHOW NOTESWholehearted Faith By Rachel Held Evans with Jeff Chu Support the show (http://thebeachedwhitemale.com)

Ken and Pete walk through the abrupt, dark days of her illness and then the tidal of love and support that rolled in from all corners of the globe. Ken reads from the blog he posted just after the news of Rachel's untimely passing. SHOW NOTESSupport the show (http://thebeachedwhitemale.com)

Monkey Town Brewing carries on the legacy of Dayton, Tennesse Unless you're a history buff, or maybe a bit older, you may not be familiar with Dayton, Tennessee, the home of Monkey Town Brewing. They don't make a lot of waves these days but back in 1925 they were national news. Local schoolteacher John T. Scopes was accused of teaching evolution to his students, which was forbidden by Tennessee's Butler Act. However, Scopes didn't recall teaching evolution, but after some discussions he agreed to take the fall as people believed it would be good publicity for little 'ol Dayton. Known as the Scopes Trial, or Scopes Monkey Trial, it's a pretty wild story. Admittedly, I was unaware that Dayton was the home of the Scopes Trial until I sat down at my table at Monkey Town Brewing. The walls are covered with pictures and news clippings that quickly explained the name of the brewery and the history of the town. Neat. I probably would never have taken a trip to Monkey Town but on the advice of the guys from the Brew Chatt Podcast we headed up. We did get fooled a bit though as we were told Dayton was "just outside" of Chattanooga. I'd consider 40 miles a bit more than "just" outside. However, the trip was definitely worth it as the staff were friendly, the food was tasty (the Irish nachos tho), and the beers were great. We sampled through lagers and hazy IPAs, a kveik-brewed beer, and a slew of diabetes-industry pastry stouts like Not Fat, Just Fluffy fluffernutter stout. Kirby Garrison, co-owner and brewer at Monkey Town joins us this week to tell the story of his hometown and the reception to his brewery. We chat about the canvas of craft beer and the experience of enjoying the Jackson Pollocks of the industry, the pros and cons of brewing in a small town market, and about a dude that "spent some time" in Tennessee. Monkey Town may not be a convenient stop for most people but if you find yourself within 40 miles or so of Dayton it's definitely worth a visit. Enjoy their great selection of beers, shoot some pool, and make sure to order the Irish nachos. Why don't more breweries have pool tables these days? Monkey Town has a few to enjoy while sampling their brews with friends. We are very excited to head up to Dayton, TN and sit down with Kirby Garrison Brewer/Owner of Monkey Town Brewing Company. We drank a damn good pilsner he has on tap, talked about how business has been, and how Coronavirus could lead to lagers being the next big thing.

Brülosophy’s Marshall Schott talks exBEERimentation We all know the saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." However, Marshall Schott of Brülosophy reminds us that just because something isn't broken doesn't mean it can't be improved. Schott and a team of other hardcore homebrewers at Brülosophy examine some of the long-held traditions of brewing to see if there's a better way to do things. Sometimes they do find a better way, and occasionally that upsets a few people. It can be tough to let go of traditions. Through their "exBEERiments" the Brülosophy team has tested the idea that a lager needs months of lagering to be great, the importance/necessity of long mash times and boils for your beers, fermentation temperatures, and a host of other brewing methods. They've helped a lot of homebrewers in making better beer, and even a few professional brewers. One of the best things about these exBEERiments is it gets people talking about the way we brew. Brülosophy shares Short & Shoddy recipes to give you a tasty beer and a quick brew day. (Photo: Brülosophy)[/caption] Learn more about hops and yeast from Brülosophy Brülosophy has a host of other resources on their site as well. The Hop Chronicles examine the performance of hop varieties in single hop beers and Short & Shoddy offers up quick recipes for various brews. They also share several methods for brewing including mashing, kegging, fermenting, and how to harvest your own yeast. It's a one-stop information shop over there. If you're more of a listener than a reader (and we definitely hope that's the case) you can check out the Brülosophy Podcast for more on their exBEERiments, Q&A sessions with the team and industry experts, and plenty of other brewing-related topics. Won't you take me to, Monkey Town We took a quick road trip to Tennessee recently and found ourselves at Monkey Town Brewing in Dayton, home of the Scopes Monkey Trial. None of my friends were familiar with the case, but it's a pretty interesting case. The short of it is that a high school teacher (John T. Scopes) was accused of teaching evolution in school at a time when that was illegal. He didn't recall ever teaching evolution but took the fall as he thought it would be good publicity for the town. As promised in the show, here's the link to the Wiki on the Scopes Trial. The folks at Monkey Town were extremely friendly and offered up some great beers, especially their NEIPAs and pastry stouts. If you find yourself in Dayton we recommend you stop by. Shout out to the crew at Brew Chatt for the recommendation!

Mike has spent the last few weeks enjoying the eastern half of Tennessee. This episode begins with the story of Rocky Top, one of the most famous and popular songs in the state. Learn how and where it was written and how it rose from an obscure B-side to one of Tennessee's State Songs. Then hear the story of Franklin, the state that never became a state, but would eventually become Tennessee. Davy Crockett, the King of the Wild Frontier, spent most of his remarkable life in Tennessee, and you'll hear the whole story. Next up is the story of the Scopes Trial, the 1925 trial that challenged a ban on the teaching of evolution in public schools. The Bristol Sessions have been called "The Big Bang of Country Music", and you'll hear why in this episode. And finally, the town of Oak Ridge was built to support a massive project during World War II; Mike will tell you about the town and the project. Music in this episode is from Nashville singer/songwriter Sam Cooper along with Chris Gantry.

Tacteel - "Beats Like That" 05. Mike Jones, Slim Thug, Paul Wall - "Still Tippin" 06. Krazy Baldhead - "Revolution" (Para One remix) 07. France Copland - "Pute et Mac" 08. Ceebrolistics - "Tyomi" 09. Stacs of Stamina - "Poisson" (screwed) 10. —Teki Latex

On this episode of Bohemian Biology, you'll hear Jim Avignon aka Neoangin talking on ArtSci Fridays, a show I hosted on the Neighborhood Public Radio back in 2008 as part of the Whitney Biennial. Jim is a German painter and performer based in Brooklyn, who at the time, just had a new album out titled 'The Happy Hobo & The Return of The Freaks'. As I just attended his even more recent album release party a couple of days ago I thought I would revive this piece for the occasion. To give you a taste here is how his bio starts: '1994 marks the beginning of the whole story: Berlin painter and „pop-art“ activist Jim Avignon spots a one-man-entertainer-keyboard in the sales bin at the hardware store, right next to the cash register. He wastes no time and purchases the instrument. In the ensuing months he will dedicate quite some time to his new keyboard. The instrument has funky accompanying rhythms and a snazzy sound but unfortunately there is no feature to save the songs. Not knowing how to read music Mr. Avignon develops his very own method to memorize the numerous melodies and chordal sketches which he had composed in no time.' Jim's next performance will be at Monkeytown, 58 N 3rd St. Brooklyn, Sunday, January 3, 2010 8pm with Jon Burgerman. His new album is 'Say High To Your Neighborhood' and is available on http://neoangin.info/ Happy holidays! Run Time: 21:33
