First on Scene, Last to Heal: Emergency Workers and Fatal Collisions goes behind the scenes with the men and women of An Garda Síochána, the National Ambulance Service and the fire service as they share stories about fatal collisions on Ireland's roads, and how that impacts their way of thinking. Produced and presented by Alex Rowley, a young journalism student from Wicklow and IMRO-nominated broadcaster, it's inspired by the contrasting ways different members of the emergency services deal with their trauma. Some choose to open up to friends, while for others, it's as if nothing bothers them.Due to a spike in road deaths in recent years, the topic has been high up in the news agenda, and rightly so, but every bank holiday we hear appeals from high-ranking Gardaí, Government Ministers and the RSA. Rarely, do we hear from those who actually deal with these collisions and see the devastation firsthand. In the documentary, Paramedics Clodagh Murphy and Paul Malone, based in Waterford, tell us about the trends they see in responding to collisions and why they're always keeping their own family members in the back of their mind. The documentary also goes on patrol with Gardaí Leanne McCarthy and Ken Driscoll of the Roads Policing Unit in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. Ken bravely opens up about how it feels to break the news of a death to a family, comparing it to handing someone an “explosive device”.We also speak with Sub-Officer Stephen Connolly from Monasterevin Fire Brigade in Co. Kildare, who speaks of the challenges faced by on-call emergency workers, who service their local community first and foremost. All emergency workers in the documentary have pleaded with people to put down their mobile phones, put on their seatbelts, follow speed limits, and not take drugs or alcohol when using the roads this Bank Holiday Weekend.Analysis from Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Malie Coyne, contextualises the issue, and further hammers home the importance of looking out for our frontline workers.

Today's guest on the podcast is Mark and Keith of the band Forty Foot to chat about the bands latest EP, Body Breaking, which was released on the 7th of February,One of Dublin's finest and loudest alt rock prospects, Forty Foot, release their largest body of work to date, their debut EP ‘Body Breaking'. The release comes following the success of their two 2024 singles ‘Toothache' and ‘Constellation' which caught the attention of Golden Plec, Hot Press, First Music Contact, Rock N Load, Genuine Irish, The Beat.ie, IMRO and Ragged Cast, with radio play from Code Zero Radio and New Music Sonar. The production on the EP is massive and powerful but doesn't lack nuance. Each sound, each instrument, given its own space and plays a significant part in creating their sound. The tracks conjure a feeling and a sense that the band are right there, in the room with you, with each chord you can almost feel the air the speakers move. To capture their sound and bottle this feeling the band made the decision to record in their own rehearsal space. Turning to long-time collaborator Conor McLoughlin of Dublin rock sweethearts Sick Love to engineer and mix the EP, it was paramount to the band that it was imbued with the energy of their space.A massive thanks to Michael of Old Crow Promotions for setting up this interview!Listen to Forty Foot - Body BreakingDigdeep + Daddee live at Sin E Hosted on Acast. Dimitri begins his multi-episode examination of the sinister forces, both domestic and foreign, who conspired to dismember and annihilate the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in the immediate aftermath of the Cold War in the early 1990s - and their largely unknown connections to the brutal civil wars that simultaneously dragged Liberia and Sierra Leone to an anarcho-colonial hell. After some preliminary comments about why Yugoslavia deserves its own sidequest in Demon Forces, Dimitri discusses the first interwar incarnation of Yugoslavia as a (nominally) constitutional monarchy ruled by the bloody Serbian House of Karađorđević; the deep mythic legacy of the 1389 Battle of Kosovo and the geopolitical fault lines of the medieval Balkans…A Tale of Two Croats, Josip Broz Tito and the shadowy Ante Pavelić; the origins of the Ustaše and Croatian Catholic ultranationalism; Mussolini bankrolling Pavelić to further his imperial ambitions towards Dalmatia and Albania; secret terrorist training camps in Italy; the Macedonian terrorist organization IMRO; the 1934 assassination of Yugoslavia's King Alexander Karađorđević and French Foreign Minister Louis Barthou in Marseilles; the complicity of Mussolini and the Hungarian government in the plot; US government interest in the activities of Pavelić and his financial connections to the Croatian-American community… For access to premium SJ episodes, upcoming installments of DEMON FORCES, live call-in specials, and the Grotto of Truth Discord, become a subscriber at patreon.com/subliminaljihad.

Umelec starého prešporského milleau lámal srdcia slovenských dám, to svoje však zanechal v Paríži. Považský vidiek či židovská Bratislava mu však boli rovnocennou inšpiráciou ako Notre Dame či francúzski surrealisti. Prežil dramatický život - väznilo ho gestapo, účastnil sa protifašistického odboja a železná opona mu rozdelila rodinu. Ako povedal sám umelec - proti smrti bojoval práve umením. Early on the morning of Sunday November 1st 2020, a young mother stood on the Castlebellingham Flyover on the M1 Motorway about to jump. Bronwyn McLoughlin happened to be passing, stopped, intervened, saved her life but slipped away quietly as assistance and family members arrived on the scene. Receiving help subsequently and now feeling much better, she was desperate to make contact with the woman who she describes as her “Angel”. She called into LMFM looking to speak with Late Lunch Presenter Gerry Kelly which she did on the afternoon of Friday December 11th, hoping the woman in question would come forward. Over the weekend Bronwyn heard the podcast of the interview, contacted Gerry on Monday morning, also willing to come on air that afternoon and share her side of the story. The woman she saved also returned and the pair spoke for the first time since that fateful day six weeks previously, in a radio moment that will live long in the memory. The FCA Assessment of Value reports came into effect in September 2019 due to a lack of transparency in the financial industry. The reports were introduced to prompt asset managers to assess the value of each fund and take corrective action if it does not offer good value. This weekend, Documentary on Newstalk airs the premiere of ‘The Bots’, in which IMRO-nominated producer Brian Gallagher looks at the lives of those who live, work, study, and relax in the vicinity of Ireland's National Botanic Gardens. The Bots will be broadcast on Newstalk 106-108fm on Sunday 30th August at 7am with a repeat broadcast on Saturday 5th September at 9 pm. Using a lively mix of interviews, location recordings, sound effects and music, The Bots explores the stories behind one of Ireland’s most popular visitor attractions, The National Botanic Gardens. Director Matthew Jebb gives an overview of the role of the Botanic Gardens and explains how it hosts six hundred thousand visitors each year. Matthew also tell of its research role, and how the blight that caused the Potato Famine of the Eighteen Forties was identified by the then director of the Gardens. Blathnaid Farrell, who grew up nearby, reminisces about the Gardens when she was a child, while librarian Alexandra Caccamo tells of a history going back much further, with some books in the library dating back to the sixteenth century. Matthew Jebb talks of the joys of living on site, and tells the story of the Director’s Residence, which predates the founding of the Gardens in 1795. Brendan Sayers gives an insight into the running of the glasshouses, and how tropical heat needs to be generated for some plant species. Glyn Anderson and Charlotte Salter Townsend talk about the guided tours they give, with Glyn reflecting on the refreshment options available to the modern-day visitor. Contributors and visitors reminisce lightly about their memories of the first thing they ever grew, while Ciaran Kavanagh and Alfreda O’Brien, who run the nearby Gravediggers pub, talk about the colourful associations between their premises and the Botanic Gardens. John Mulhern, Principal of the Teagasc College of Horticulture, discusses how hundreds of students study at their Glasnevin site within the Gardens, while Felicity Gaffney, the manager of the Visitor Centre, gives details of the surprising range of cultural and artistic events that are staged each year in the fifty-acre grounds. Matthew Jebb tell of the wildlife he’s encountered while living on site, and Colin Kelleher talks of his role as a taxonomist and the task of naming the vast numbers of specimens that have been catalogued in the Gardens. The programme concludes with contributors revealing what the Botanic Gardens means to them, and their hopes for its future. Quotes from THE BOTS: “The first place we made for was the glasshouse. And when you went in the heat would just hit you. In those days you wouldn’t have central heating at home – so that was super.” Blathnaid Farrell, childhood visitor to the Botanic Gardens. “Our back garden is about an acre and it backs onto the Botanic Gardens and the cemetery. The neighbours are basically the cemetery people and plants.” Ciaran Kavanagh, The Gravedigger Pub. “One of the real pleasures of the job is that I wake up at work each morning.” Matthew Jebb, Director, Botanic Gardens. “Our book collection extends back to the Fifteen Thirties.” Alexandra Caccamo, Librarian. “The pub, the cemetery, the Botanics, it’s like the Bermuda Triangle – you do disappear in that triangle in Glasnevin, and before you know it, four hours have passed.” Alfreda O'Brien, The Gravedigger Pub. “In the Herbarium there are about six hundred thousand dried specimens”. Colin Kelleher, Taxonomist. “The world is changing quite a lot, and I think the big positive is that more and more people are paying attention to the natural world.” Charlotte Salter Townsend, tour guide. “It took 25 years to put it together. There are 11 kilometres of glazing bars in this building, and it’s a work of art.” Matthew Jebb, Director, Botanic Gardens. “I used to go into the hothouse - when I missed Italy.” Ciaran Kavanagh, The Gravedigger Pub. From the intro to the Podcast. 'At 11:40 PM on August 16th, 1977 my phone rang. I had been listening to Elvis sing a beautiful ballad called, Suppose. And I was smiling. Why? I realised that as he sang my favourite part, those lines, ‘it's impossible to imagine the world without a star but imagining know you is more impossible by far' I did something I had been doing since I first heard the song nearly ten years earlier. When he reached that final word, ‘far' and seemed to be reaching for the heavens, if not heaven, I closed my eyes and held my breath, as if in prayer, and almost said aloud “You can do it, Elvis.” It was a glorious moment of union, though to what I haven't a clue. Then I answered the phone. it was my girlfriend. She said “Joseph I have terrible news. it's Elvis. He's dead.” I said, “No, he can't be.” She said, “He is. Your mother saw it on the news, rang and asked me to tell you. She said, “I can't bear to give Joseph this news, I know it will break his heart. Elvis was his life.” And so in an instant, my life changed.' This podcast is Part 1 of a radio show that RTE Radio 1 in Ireland, told me was "too personal" to broadcast. So I substituted another show 'Conversations about the King' - which I will also turn into a podcast - and it included interviews I did with the likes of Bono and Sam Phillips and Sinead O Connor. In 2018 was nominated by IMRO, the Irish Music Rights Organisation, for an award in their 'Best Music Documentary' category. I'd like to believe that this show, 'Memories of An Elvis Fan.' it's precursor, might have been as successful.

The latest radio documentary to be broadcast by Newstalk 106 – 108fm as part of it’s weekly Documentary On Newstalk series is ‘Brewery Days’, in which IMRO-nominated producer Brian Gallagher explores the lives of those who worked in the world-within-a-world that was Guinness’s Brewery in the Sixties and Seventies. Brewery Days broadcasts on Newstalk 106-108fm on Sunday 10th May at 7am with repeat broadcast on Saturday 16th May at 9pm Using a lively mix of interviews, location recordings, sound effects, and topical news stories and music, Brewery Days follows the journey of one employee from boyhood to manhood in Ireland’s most famous brewery. The narrator tells of passing the Boys’ Examination and starting work in the Brewery the same month that Nelson’s Pillar was demolished. Guinness historian Willie Mullen tells of how the Boys’ Examination was sent to Trinity College for marking, and we follow in the narrator’s footsteps as he starts work in the Brewery Laboratory, and begins his exploration of the fascinating world of the 64-acre Guinness plant, with its underground trains, electricity power station, and company fire brigade and police. We hear how the company was progressive in many ways, yet had an old-fashioned pecking order that seemed to hanker after the past. Paul Carty of Diageo explains how times have moved on, and how the company has made an unused building into The Storehouse, now one of Dublin’s top visitor attractions. To a background of late Sixties music and news, the narrator describes his experiences in the the Brewery, and Alan Clarke, a former employee, tells of the company’s outstanding sports facilities at Crumlin Road. Anne Manners reminisces about her status as a “Lady Clerk” and of causing a stir on meeting her future husband in the Guinness Table Tennis Club. We hear from the narrator how with the advent of the Seventies the company branched out into pleasure cruising, and Jean Roche tells of the arrival of computerisation in Guinness. The narrator recalls social change finally altering the conservative mores of the Brewery, and the shock in the workplace when the first time and motion studies were carried out In the wider world Ireland joined the EEC and the Vietnam War ended, and then the narrator, after seven colourful years, takes voluntary redundancy, and leaves the Brewery to start his new life... Quotes from Brewery Days: “Some very clever person came up with the idea of using the Storehouse, which had been lying vacant. And now it’s Ireland’s number one fee-paying attraction.” Paul Carty, Diageo. “You had handball, bowls, tennis, soccer, gaelic, pitch and putt, rugby, hockey, cricket, table tennis, snooker and darts -The Iveagh Ground was a mecca.” Alan Clarke, former Guinness employee. “The first time I asked her out she wasn’t sure if it was a joke or not, because it was April Fools’ Day” Michael Manners. “I met loads of people at the Guinness table tennis club – including my future husband.” Anne Manners. “The early Seventies was the cusp of change between the old manual way of brewing and the new, more automated way of brewing that we do now.” Eibhlinn Roche, archivist. “We were involved in a very competitive situation with our sister brewery in London, and it was always kind of held over us that there was a possibility that they could take over the Irish trade.” Bob Kerr, former brewer. “The punch room had about fourteen girls; the main frame computer had a huge room to itself and its own air conditioning; and the hard drives were mini-cabinets.” Jean Roche, former computer operator. This weekend, Drama on Newstalk will broadcast the premiere of new radio drama “Secrets” in which IMRO-nominated producer Brian Gallagher travels back in time to a seaside holiday in Sixties Ireland, during which two women face an intriguing moral dilemma. “Secrets” tells the story of the extended Lawlor family who take a seaside holiday in Bray, County Wicklow, in 1964. The 1964 scenes are viewed through the eyes of twelve-year-old Damian Lawlor, while simultaneously the now-adult Damian looks back on the action. Reappraising the moral choices of that summer, over fifty years later, giving Damian another dilemma now as he has to decide whether or not to leave the past undisturbed. The programme looks at the human interest stories associated with institutions located on the Green, such as Adolf Hitler's half brother working in the Shelbourne Hotel, and the canvas from the portrait of Queen Victoria in the College of Surgeons being used to make bandages during the 1916 Rising. Curtis Walsh was our Play Irish Artist of the week in September and we had to nab him for a Session. Have a listen by clicking the link above to his track 'Full Recovery' recorded in studio here in Marconi House, thanks to our Gavin Blake on sound. Here's the skinny on the rising star. Curtis Walsh is already impressive and he has only just begun! The IMRO 2017 Christie Hennessy Songwriting Competition winner has been supporting The Academic, Lany and Tom Walker in recent months. In fact, he has spent the past year gigging, with full audiences and an avid fan base, Curtis released 'Full Recovery' earlier in the summer. The song has been streamed 614,000 times which is pretty spectacular. 'Full Recovery' was written to help someone who Curtis was seeing through a hard time. "I wrote 'Full Recovery' to try to change the mind frame of the person I was seeing so she would realise no matter how bad the situation is, that with a bit of patience and trust, everything will eventually be okay."
