Voor de eerste podcast van 2025 wijken we een beetje af van het gekende format… Qua leeftijd komt hij net in aanmerking om als praatgast te fungeren. Wat het aantal rally's betreft, is het wellicht de piloot met de minste ervaring in onze reeks. Met amper 35 rally's op de teller is hij op enkele jaren tijd echter wel een spraakmakend figuur in de rallysport én een te duchten kandidaat-kampioen voor het Belgian Rally Championship 2025. Aan (andere) autosport ervaring is er geen gebrek: zelf bijna 10 jaar Formule 1 rijder bij o.a. Benetton, LMP2-winnaar in de prestigieuze 24u van Le Mans en last but not least als vader, coach, manager een zeer belangrijke factor voor de wereldkampioen Formule 1 van de laatste vier jaar, een zekere Max. De zinderende finale in de slotrace Abu Dhabi 2021 geeft onze praatgast nu nog steeds kippenvel. Van het feestje achteraf weten enkel insiders hoe goed dat was. Eén van die insiders is Richard Pex, de sympathieke dakwerker uit Echt, waar we te gast zijn voor een Rallykoffie met zijn vriend voor het leven Jos Verstappen. Na wat testen en spelen, belandden de twee vrienden samen in de rallysport. Voor Jos is dat nog altijd met dezelfde gedrevenheid en passie als vroeger. Doorzettingsvermogen, talent en streven naar perfectie zijn hem niet vreemd. Omringd door een goed team en een uitstekende co-piloot, verrast Verstappen vriend en vijand in de rallywereld. Pech en opgaves zorgden ervoor dat hij “maar” vierde in het BRC 2024 was, maar vergis je niet: de BRC Masters kampioen van 2024 is één van de kandidaten voor de algemene BRC-titel in 2025. Curt and Kevin talk about what the layout may look like, and if Texas Motor Speedway will ever return to the IndyCar schedule. Welcome to our motorsports podcast where we discuss F1, IndyCar, IMSA, NASCAR, our own racing adventures, and some other adventures!The World Endurance Championship ran one of racing's triple crown's over the past weekend: The 24 Hours of Le Mans. What a fantastic race it was! Multiple manufacturers in the top class fighting for the win along with great battles in the LMP2 and GT3 classes. Ferrari walks away victorious for the 2nd year in a row and with a 1st and 3rd finish in the Hypercar class where double points were awarded at this race, their hopes for a WEC title have been reignited for sure with 4 more races to go in the season. Their next race will be in July at Interlagos in Brazil.Looking ahead to this weekend, Formula 1 is back in action as they start a triple header beginning in Barcelona. Indycar is off to California where they'll be racing at Laguna Seca and NASCAR will be in New Hampshire where they will look to win a Lobster.
IndyCar may have had the week off, but that didn't stop the news machine from turning the motorsports world on its ear and the Speed Street boys have the latest scoop. Conor Daly chats with his co-host Chase Holden about catching the 24 Hour of Le Mans coverage over the weekend, where many IndyCar drivers were in action. Friend of the show Nolan Siegel brought home a victory in the LMP2 class at the historic race, and found himself in the middle of the latest IndyCar silly season happenings, as the announcement was made that he would be replacing Theo Pourchaire in the Arrow-McLaren number-6 for the rest of the 2024 season. Conor expresses to Chase the immense pressure that young drivers are facing in what is shaping up to be a volatile driver employment climate, where many drivers have been let go after being unable to perform in a short amount of time.Road America winner Will Power joins the show to discuss how his Penske number-12 team converted some recent solid finishes to a well earned victory in Elkhart Lake. Will had a front row seat to the calamity that broke out in the first turn of the race, which he attributes to passing ability becoming increasingly difficult this year and the importance of top-10 finishes. Will suggests the limitation of push to pass in cars that are about to be overtaken, which would lead to more strategy on the shorter courses that IndyCar visits. Conor also inquires about Will's utilization of overcutting his teammates and how that helped him come out on top during the final stretch of the race. The guys all look ahead to the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey and speculate what differences fans will see in the race this year compared to last year's season finale at the 2.238 mile long road course.
The 92nd running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans did not disappoint after heavy rain and some controversial stewarding as the #50 Ferrari of Miguel Molina, Antonio Fuoco and Nicklas Nielsen triumphed over the #7 Toyota of Kamui Kobayashi, Nyck de Vries and Jose Maria Lopez to take their second-consecutive win for the prancing horse. Gary Watkins joins Steph Wentworth to review all the action across the famous race. Together they discuss the incredible energy save that the Ferrari team pulled off to win the race, as well as some of the controversial stewarding towards the end with the #8 Toyota spun out of contention by the other factory Ferrari. There's also a full breakdown of all the other major Hypercar factories, such as both Alpine's failing to finish after simultaneous engine failures, how Porsche slipped out of contention due to their misjudgement of the conditions, where Cadillac lost time compared to their rivals, and the rough showing for BMW. Phil's birthday weekend wasn't ruined by the results of either the Rolex 24 or the NFL Conference Championships...even if San Francisco had Phil on the ropes and physically ill. Phil and Josh discuss both the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs returning to the Super Bowl for a rematch. Both games are covered and the guys review the key plays and players before an early preview of the Super Bowl itself. At the Rolex 24, the Penske Porsche's stood above the rest to take their first Rolex win in 58 years. The Whelen Engineering Cadillac team was the key foil for what became a Porsche benefit in the GTP category. Phil and Josh look at the overall battle along with the winners in LMP2, GTD Pro and GTD plus other storylines that came from the great race. Tonight, on Trackside with Kevin Lee and Curt Cavin, there's more racing on the oval! The annual IndyCar rookie test is this weekend and Curt and Kevin preview some of the drivers who will make turn some laps. They also talk about Kyle Larson turning his first laps in an IndyCar at the test. The two looks at the weather conditions for the day and what to expect from the hybrid motor in testing. They delve into legal matters involving Romain Grosjean. Following that, they talk about where Grosjean may end up for next year. Later in the first hour of the show, Kevin and Curt discuss Robert Wickens' performance in the Michelin Pilot Challenge. Kevin gives an update on how the sports car race at IMS went over the weekend and how his son Jackson performed. Curt previews a new event coming to IMS that will really shine, and how the event will benefit the track. The two also answer some fan questions. In the final segment of the hour, the two talk about the announcement of a new NASCAR game coming out created by the iRacing crew. In the second hour of the show, Kevin and Curt talk to Indy NXT driver Christian Rasmussen. Rasmussen gives us some insight on what it's like to compete in the Indy NXT series, financial struggles, and his goals in motorsports. Rasmussen also talks about how he will compete in LMP2 at Petit Le Mans. In the final half hour of the program, Kevin and Curt talk to Brian Barnhart about the upcoming rookie orientation at IMS this weekend.
