Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! Our mission is to empower individuals to reach their athletic and full potential. Today, we'll discuss injuries— a common frustration among endurance athletes—and how to reduce your injury risk as you prepare for the upcoming season during the off-season. While this time can feel like downtime, it's actually a crucial opportunity to build resilience and prioritize health. Injury prevention is a key factor for success, as avoiding risks leads to the consistency needed for high performance. What you do in the coming weeks will lower your chances of setbacks without requiring excessive effort; approach it smartly and pragmatically. IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon outlines four simple strategies to implement. This episode features the story of Sarah Piampiano, a professional triathlete who overcame a major injury by focusing on sleep, nutrition, stress management, strength training, and tissue resilience. Dixon outlines four key areas for injury prevention: developing healthy habits like sleep and nutrition, incorporating strength training, building tissue resilience through consistent, low-intensity running, and adopting a holistic approach that combines these elements. He stresses the importance of consistency and patience in building a resilient body to prevent future injuries. We decided to rewind to episode 234 and its wealth of information about the legendary event. Whether you've qualified for this year's IRONMAN World Championship, are a male athlete preparing for the 2024 Hawaii Ironman, or have aspirations to compete in Kona in the future, the insights shared by Matt in this episode are extremely valuable. Whether you're planning to compete, supporting friends, or you're just an enthusiast, ironman master coach Matt Dixon invites you to follow along as he shares everything you need to know about how to achieve success in Kona. In this episode of the Purple Patch Podcast, Matt draws from his 15 years of experience helping athletes thrive at the Hawaii Ironman World Championships and provides a breakdown of the preparation, training, and logistical elements you need to consider before ever setting foot on the island. Purple Patch has guided more than 750 athletes to qualification at the World Championships, has coached multiple age group world champions, and has had numerous purple patch pros in the top 10 overall, including athletes such as Chris Lieto, Rachel Joyce, and Sarah Piampiano. Matt takes the lessons he has learned from coaching these athletes and shares a detailed walkthrough of what you can expect in Kona, from landing to leaving. The episode is broken into two parts: Part 1: Pre-arrival and nailing race week Part 2: Race execution - swim-bike-run, nutrition, and mindset In part one you will learn: Key strategies to adopt before you travel - How to arrive fit, fresh, and ready to handle the crazy of Kona week. (11:56) "your mission and goal is to arrive to Hawaii as systemically fresh as possible. You want to also be prepared physiologically to meet the conditions as best as you can. So you want to get there really fresh and already have some physiological adaptations in hand so that you are ready to navigate the heat. If you can achieve those two big things, then what you can do in Hawaii is start to prime for the race." A framework of how to optimize race week - Balancing training and preparation with the Kona experience. The hit list - answers to the most common questions athletes have around race week. In part two you will learn: Strategies around success in Kona - race day mindset and execution (38:10) "if you want your best race performance, the truth is that it's never going to come from you chasing splits. Having predetermined ideas of what you want to swim, what you want to bike, and what you run or run and trying to adhere a race plan to that is a fool's errand. Instead, success is going to come about through an element of control, really smart self-management, a great amount of persistence, and continued problem solving over all of the challenges that you will meet across the whole of the day." Key elements around race craft, fueling, and hydration. How to navigate recovery and reflection. So many athletes ruin their performance potential through a series of mistakes they make in their preparation or execution during race week. The goal of this episode is to provide you with details of the experience and recommendations to help you set up for your best Hawaii Ironman Race experience. Babies. They take a ton of thought and planning, right? We asked these four CLIF® athletes – who all had pandemic pregnancies – to share their experiences with us; mountain biker Catherine Pendrel, ultra-runner Stephanie Howe, triathlete Sarah Piampiano and snowboarder Kimmy Fasani. This podcast is not intended to provide medical or nutrition advice, or make health or nutrition claims about Clif Bar & Company products.
This week Alyssa and Haley are chatting with professional triathletes and Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO) board members Rachel Joyce and Sarah Piampiano. Last month the PTO announced its new parental leave policies that are attempting to address some of the potential issues, such as loss of income and decreases in overall ranking, that female pros face when they take time away from professional racing to raise their children. As the PTO Board Co-President, Rachel gives us some insight into what went into developing the policy, and how the compensation system has been set out. Sarah also fills us in on why this issue was particularly important to her as an expectant mother. The policy comes into effect on January 1st, 2021, and it will allow female professionals to receive up to 15months of paid leave during pregnancy and after giving birth. We also have a special Challenge Daytona race recap with Alissa Doehla, who placed 11th at the PTO Championships this past Sunday. She dishes on the details of what the race was like from an insider perspective, and breaks down how the day went for her. Send in your holiday related (or non-holiday related!) mailbag questions to ironwomenpodcast@gmail.com and read more about the PTO Maternity and Parental leave policy at https://protriathletes.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Maternity-Leave-FINAL.pdf

Yes, it's the week that triathletes, coaches, and spectators usually descend up Kailua-Kona for the annual IRONMAN World Championships. This week, Matt looks back on six memorable stories from his 20+ years of heading over to Kona for the big race. Some stories involve lessons pros like Chris Lieto, Rachel Joyce, and Sarah Piampiano. Other takeaways center around age-group athletes that Matt has coached at the World Championships. Each story is poignant and full of life lessons for all of us - stay calm, stick with the process, nail the basics, get your attitude right, and, most importantly: NEVER Stand Down Wind. We know you'll enjoy this look back at some of the moments that make this race so special, sufferable, unique, rewarding, and totally unforgettable. We don't even blame you if you feel a wee bit of nostalgia. We miss it too.
If 2020 was a chapter in an athlete story, it would be classified as a massive challenge and a setback that includes disappointment and most certainly failure. But, the great athlete would navigate, learn, and overcome. A great athlete has the tools and wisdom to realize the path of performance is never linear. Today is Part Two on our series of performance culture and the athletic mindset. Last week, we dug into the cultural model of performance. It's the model that we utilize at Purple Patch and it is a way of doing something that unites individuals and creates a collective resilience. And at the end of the day, the individuals that thrive within that culture lean into a suite of traits and characteristics that make up what we call the athletic mindset. Now, we've learned over the last few months of turbulence, that these traits are the very traits that foster the resilience, adaptability and the growth needed, not to just navigate, but to thrive through these times. What are these characteristics and traits? Matt digs in, dissects, and tells stories about the athlete journey and, of course, the athlete mindset. You do not need to be an athlete to lean into the athletic mindset. We're discussing life here: how to thrive, how to rise up, how to grow in the challenge, how to improve your personal resilience, and how to optimize your health. So no matter what your sporting background, you're going to benefit from this episode on developing an athletic mindset. In ep. 9 of the Triathlete Hour, Sarah Piampiano opens up about the uncertainty she's facing as a "mature" athlete. This season was supposed to be her last season before she and her husband started a family. But now with all the uncertainty around racing: Does she wait? She's 40: Does she try and come back to racing after having a kid? How do you tackle these questions? Sarah also talks to us about how she almost quit the sport in 2018. But after months off to re-find her fire, she came back in 2019 and set the third fastest American women's Ironman time in history. After quitting smoking and a 100-hour/week job in finance, she dedicated herself to being the best triathlete she could be. Now what? And first, we chat about the big news: Ironman postpones Kona 2020 to Feb. 2021. What does this mean for athletes? How will next year play out?

In this episode on our continuing series of #emergingstronger, Matt outlines a playbook for a "ramp to racing." A return to racing will happen soon. We don't know exactly when, but when it happens, you want to be ready...race ready. What should that look like as you emerge from the fog? What should you seek to accomplish on your return? In setting up this episode, Matt defines and lays out: Reminders of key elements that your training should have right now Important considerations as we inch towards a racing mindset Key sessions, mindset, and setting up your "ramp to racing" Remember, you are not seeking a return to the old you. You are seeking…growth. You don’t want to return. You want to emerge. I had completely forgotten just how many stories Sarah Piampiano and I have together - from the first time we met when she rocked up at my door to stay with us, to being pulled over by the police in Austria while we were riding. Between the laughs and the memories, things got very real when the topic of starting a family, retirement and an unknown future due to recent events came up in discussion. This week, Alyssa and Haley chat with 4-time Ironman champ and 7-time 70.3 champ Sarah Piampiano-Lord about the lessons she's learned racing as a pro. Sarah tells us about her mental struggles and lack of motivation in 2018, and how she regained her love for the process after a 4-month break that resulted in a kick-ass 2019 season. Sarah talks about her decision to run the Houston marathon in the hopes of qualifying for the Olympic trials, hitting her first "wall", and chasing that sub 2:45 at the Boston Marathon. Plus, hear Sarah's insights on the PTO and what this season has in store for her. Alyssa and Haley talk about their snack-game and get ready for the LIVE IronWomen podcast in Atlanta on Feb 26.
Matt explores the question, 'What Happened?' at this year's IRONMAN World Championships. Performance predictability and all other signs pointed to a magical day on the Big Island for Sarah Piampiano, a fierce competitor who is coming off her best year of almost a decade in professional racing. Unfortunately, the day was far from magical. What lessons did coach and athlete draw from the day, and what lessons can you take from this high-profile example? There are no guarantees in sport, which is what makes it so beautiful and painful at the same time. Copyright 2019 All Rights Reserved
The theme of this episode is empowerment and the power of lifting each other up in support. The journey to elite success can be lonely and competitive, and there's a long-standing stereotype that elite female athletes can't work well together in this pursuit of excellence. Chelsea Sodaro and Sarah Piampiano are here to dispel those myths. In fact, this Purple Patch duo insist that working together day after day is a driving factor in their individual success. The collective wins and the proof is not only in the fantastic race outcomes they've had this year, but also in their overall attitude and outlook on the sport. On today's podcast, we answer one of the most-asked questions: what does a professional triathlete eat in a day? We get that answer from pro Sarah Piampiano, who has been tearing up the field in 2018 and 2019, and her certified nutritionist (who also works as the Performance Sports Nutritionist for the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs) Scott Tindal. High fat? Low fat? Protein? Carbs? We get deep into the details on the show.
Sarah Piampiano just finished 2nd at Ironman Hamburg with another amazing run - a 2.56 on a really hot day, which was only a couple of minutes down on the fastest male run times. We got this interview in the can just before the race. She set Ironman Brazil on fire with her win in 2019, when she delivered a 4.43 bike backed by a 2.53 marathon. To put this in context, her marathon was faster than the men's winner, and only 2 male pro's ran faster! We hear all about her background - from an overworked banker putting in 100 hour weeks, sleeping under her desk and smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day who entered her first triathlon as a bet! She talks honestly about the changes she's made over the last year to regain her love of the sport after feeling really burned out - we get some great insight into the nutritional changes she's made to stop 'restricting calories' and to start 'maximising nutritional value' from her food.As she says at the end of the interview - 'We only live once.' :)Show Sponsors:http://team.oxygenaddict.com - You can download a free copy of the Team Oxygenaddict Race Review Document here: http://bit.ly/racereviewdocument If you feel you’ve not had the race you deserved or expected this weekend- Coach Rob has a couple of free skype consultation slots available this week, where you can talk through your results with him. After college she went to Wall Street, where she worked long hours in investment banking, before discovering triathlon in 2009 on a bet. Almost overnight, went from smoking 2 packs of cigarettes per day to jumping head first into the triathlon world, and at the end of 2011 she left her job in finance and began training and racing full time as a professional long-course triathlete. This week, we are offering you a special edition of two episodes in which Purple Patch pros join Matt for roundtable discussions with professional Ironman triathletes like you've never heard before! In Part 1, Coach Matt moderates this honest discussion with three of his elite pros, Kevin Collington, Laura Siddall, and Sarah Piampiano, about goal-setting, managing fears, training management, race day mindset, definitions of success, and so much more. All three are IRONMAN champions and, yet, they still freely admit that there's so much more to learn. If you think the life of a professional triathlete is easy or enviable, think again. They work hard - NONSTOP. When the physical training stops, the mental training begins. Even Matt learned a thing or two about his athletes during this deep dive that touched on several topics: What did their path to world-class performance look like? What components do they possess that have shaped their success? What is their definition of success? Do professional athletes still get pre-race anxiety? If so, how do they calm the nerves? What do they think about during the race? How do they approach pain and suffering? How do they prepare for a long week of training? What is their proudest moment so far and what obstacles have they had to overcome to stand on top of the Ironman podium? Enjoy this epic episode with Ironman Champions and Purple Patch Professionals! :00-:20 Recorded Intro :20-2:30 Matt's Welcome and February 8th Webinar Invitation (Join Us: https://purplepatchfitness.com/blog/webinar-train-your-next-race-purple-patch) 2:30-5:45 Word of the Week: Basics 5:45 - 1:01 Matt's Roundtable with Sarah Piampiano, Kevin Collington, and Laura Siddall To Register for our February 8th Webinar on Purple Patch Custom Programming, Click HERE Follow us and learn more about our Coaching Services, Training Camps and Matt's Latest Book, Fast Track Triathlete: Purple Patch Fitness Website Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Instagram Thanks for taking a listen and, if you like what you hear, please subscribe, share, rate and review. ONE STEP AHEAD: Listener question around race nutrition plus Mikki talks to us about the top most addictive foods. WORKOUT OF THE WEEK: Self-esteem. HOT PROPERTY INTERVIEW - SARAH PIAMPIANO: This year Sarah pulled out an amazing 7th place at Kona. Amazing because Sarah only got into triathlon in 2009 over a bet with a friend. She barely knew what a triathlon entailed. Sarah was born in Maine in the US and was on skis at age 2. She went to a ski academy in Vermont and for three years raced around the globe against the World's best skiers. She also loved cross-country running but gave it up to concentrate on her skiing. Not only did Sarah win her bet but she loved the triathlon experience so much that she walked away with a fire in her belly and thought – 'I love this. I can be GOOD….or maybe even great'. GEEK OUT: Logging your miles in nature does wonders for your mental health. 5 MINUTE FOCUS: Bike insurance.
