Will screenlife movies become the found footage of the next generation? Though there have been some noticeable outliers, the genre has not really taken off with audiences. But what if you do one that is also a creature feature plus has family drama. We also review an uncomfortable psychological thriller starring Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow. This year Blake watched the Oscars while Nathaniel could care less about them. We talk about Demi Moore not winning for The Substance, Quentin Tarantino's amazing casting track record, and record long speeches. The Ready or Not sequel has added a notable name to its cast. Are we ready for it?There is something about screenlife movies that just does not work for us. Host was great and Dashcam was fun, but they usually end up being more frustrating than anything else. Bloat was no different as the filmmaking took us out of it on a number of levels. We could not even imagine why it was done in this style to being with.If the movie were shot in a more traditional style it probably would have been better, but that does not mean it would have been good. The writing is awful presenting the audience with characters that are shallow at best. There is no payoff for the monster and the ending is downright confusing. Maybe we should stick to found footage. The Rule of Jenny Pen was discomforting for different reasons. When you have Rush and Lithgow leading the way, you now acting is not going to be a problem. The atmosphere is a bleak one that only gets darker as the plot progresses. Before long, things have escalated to levels that are almost impossible to watch. But you do not want to look away. That is what makes it such a great film. It is touch to watch and filled with a sense of sadness and hopelessness. It also has two compelling leads and a riveting story. The Rule of Jenny Pen will is an unforgettable watch - for better and for worse. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. On this episode of Sitting in the Dark, host Tommy Metz III is joined by Pete Wright and Andy Nelson for an exploration of found footage and epistolary films. As Tommy explains, the goal is to examine how certain horror movies have upheld the literary epistolary tradition on screen through the use of found footage techniques. The episode provides an analysis of found footage pioneer The Blair Witch Project, examining how its use of multiple cameras and time jumps strips away the usual cinematic artifice to create heightened suspense. They then delve into Unfriended, dissecting how its adherence to the rules of screenlife cinema immerses the viewer in the fear of a socialscape driven by technology. Host builds tension in a similar way despite its lower energy, with the horror manifesting in the characters' homes as captured by their webcams during a séance.Oh how there be questions here: how the epistolary tradition translates effectively to film, the unreliability of each limited viewpoint, and how modern interfaces and tech glitches can maximize unease. They discuss the restrictions naturally imposed by found footage that heighten the suspense and the use of familiar technologies we constantly engage with that breaks down the separation between fiction and reality. For an incisive look at how modern horror films immerse audiences by cleverly adhering to the epistolary style, this episode of Sitting in the Dark is essential listening. Tommy and crew pare an expansive topic down to its essence, analyzing pioneering films that maximize unease through their ingenious use of limited camera angles and familiar technologies. This is a conversation on how modern greats manipulate horror to blur the line between reality and nightmare. (00:00) - Welcome to Sitting in the Dark (04:35) - What is The Epistilary Tradition? Brennan, Jess & Nicole return to the Screenlife genre for the sequel to Searching, it's Missing
“The Collingswood Story” is the movie that tons of filmmakers should thank for being made. In the late 90's/early 00's, due to the massive success of “The Blair Witch Project”, there was a scramble to make found footage horror. With laptops and webcams and a world wide reach, Mike Costanza saw a movie to be made that no one else saw: Screen Life Horror. The film would marry home webcams with horror elements to create a wonderful and scary film like the world had never seen. Mike and I chat about movies, his early days of editing and his awesome attention to detail that made this movie what it was.Check the movie out at www.cauldron-films.com for a jam-paked blu-ray, or streaming on Shudder.
Screenlife has been solidified as a bonafide film style thanks in large part to its pioneers and its knack for turning small budgets into large box office profits. Screenlife films present stories through the screens of our familiar digital devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones giving the audience a familiar point of view as we spend countless hours of our lives on these devices.2018s Searching, starring John Cho, was a massive box office success earning $75 million dollars against an $800,000 budget. So naturally, the film was ripe for sequel, and in 2023, the film Missing starring 19 year old Storm Reid was released in the theaters earning praise by critics and audience alike.Hangout with us, as we discuss and review 2023s MISSING on the Brothers in Armchairs Podcast. I have been a fan of today's guest since I first saw his mind-blowing film, Night Watch years ago. Timur Bekmambetov is an established director, producer, and writer who has built a name for himself both in his home country, Russia, and here in the U.S., making films, music videos, and commercials. At first glance at his film, I became obsessed with Timur's work and his filmmaking style. He is the producer and director of Day Watch (2006), Wanted (2008), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012), Profile ( 2021), and many many more.Timur is a jack of all trades. His journey in the industry started with theater production design and soon he got the directing bug. While honing his directing skills, he took up producing which then led to movie production. One of my favorite of his films is the genre-bending Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, James McCovey, and Morgan Freeman.Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an office worker whose life is going nowhere. After his estranged father is murdered, he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins that takes its orders from Fate itself. Fox and Sloan (Morgan Freeman), the Fraternity's leader, teach Wesley to tap into dormant powers. Though he enjoys his newfound abilities, he begins to suspect that there is more to the Fraternity than meets the eye.Abraham Lincoln is reinvented as a vampire-killing president in this Timur Bekmambetov-directed action picture starring Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, and Dominic Cooper. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith adapts his own book for 20th Century Fox. Tim Burton produces alongside Bekmambetov and Jim Lemley.Timur's latest project is Profile. The film was initially released in Russia in 2018 and is set to be released in the US on May 14, 2021.Based on Anna Erelle's non-fiction book, In The Skin of a Jihadist, the film contextualizes our digital life and fears. It explores the role of digital spaces in the recruitment of young European Women by ISIS. British journalist, Amy Whittaker sets on this investigation by creating a Facebook profile under the alias of Melody Nelson along with a persona online of a woman who has recently converted to Islam. The results are thrilling and eye-opening.Profile was shot in a new film language called Screenlife. What is Screenlife?Screenlife is a new format of visual content that has grown from independent projects to full-length, world-renowned films, documentaries, and TV shows. Howdy boys and girls, welcome back to another Horror Pod Class! Today we are all going to learn about the "Screenlife" movie making technique, why it works or doesn't, and what it could mean to the future of movie making. What is "Screenlife?" Screenlife is an innovative digital language that tells a whole narrative within the frames of a screen. The method was created by Timur Bekmambetov, whose name Tyler doesn't even try to pronounce correctly. Before we get there, Tyler and Mike talk about what they are reading and watching and Mike tells us a ghost story! A true life ghost story! Maybe. It's another jam-packed and eclectic episode of BEHIND THE LENS as we go dark with UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB, do a summer sizzle with the cast of HOT SUMMER NIGHTS, and revisit LITTLE PINK HOUSE with our special guest, COLIN CUNNINGHAM. First up we hear from the cast of HOT SUMMER NIGHTS. A real summer sizzler from writer/director Elijah Bynum, HOT SUMMER NIGHTS is a coming-of-age tale set against an East Coast beach community and an impending hurricane. (And I don't know which is more volatile – teenaged hormones or a hurricane.) HOT SUMMER NIGHTS is an explosion of beauteous stylized visual (and gorgeous color composition) married to a period-perfect 90's musical montage, serving as the framework for strong performances from Timothee Chalamet, Alex Roe ("The Fith Wave", "Forever My Girl"), Maika Monroe ("Independence Day: Resurgence", "The 5th Wave") and Maia Mitchell ("The Fosters"). Take a listen to excerpts of our exclusive interviews with ALEX ROE, MAIKA MONROE, and MAIA MITCHELL as they talk about their respective attractions to the story and getting into some very different character skins. Then we welcome veteran actor COLIN CUNNINGHAM, one of the stars of LITTLE PINK HOUSE, now available on DVD/On Demand. Listen as Colin talks about the importance of a film like LITTLE PINK HOUSE, a true story that focuses on the issue of eminent domain in the United States, and then balances that with his experiences on a series like "Falling Skies" or "Preacher" or a fun-filled tv-movie like "Mr. St. Nick". Calling in live from the set of his new film, "Bashira", a Japanese horror film, Colin's enthusiasm and excitement for his craft are palpable as he talks about performance and his approach to the industry plus, his overall body of work. We wrap up the show with an excerpt from our exclusive interview with writer/director STEPHEN SUSCO who talks about his new film UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB. Thanks to Timur Bekmambetov, we were introduced to the new film language of "ScreenLife" or "Screen Reality" with "Unfriended." Stephen now continues to explore ScreenLife with UNFRIENDED: DARK WEB. Take a listen as he talks about not only his approach in taking ScreenLife to the next level, but in developing a story rooted within the very fears of so many, the Dark Web. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Special guest and film producer Adam Sidman visits with Terence and Ian at his hotel room in Marina Del Rey. Adam used to work with the guys in TV and has now switched over to film.
