The six warring parties met at Armistice-the site of the comet's impact-and made a truce. Why was Eretz Yisrael initially given to the Seven Nations? May our Torah provide an Iluy to the Neshamot of those murdered in Eretz Yisrael, merit that those taken captive be safely and quickly returned, merit that those injured be given a speedy Refuah Shleima, merit that the Chayalei Tzahal be safe and successful, and merit that we reach a swift and peaceful end to this war.
Discussions at the recent Group of Seven Nations meeting point to the continued development of a multipolar world, as supply chains become less global and more local. Investors should watch for opportunities in this disruption.----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Michael Zezas, Global Head of Fixed Income Research for Morgan Stanley. Along with my colleagues bringing you a variety of perspectives, I'll be talking about the recent G7 meetings and its implications for markets. It's Wednesday, May 24th at 9 a.m. in New York. Over the weekend, President Biden traveled to Japan for a meeting of the Group of Seven Nations, or G7. G7 meetings typically involve countries discussing and seeking consensus on a wide range of economic and geopolitical issues. And the consensus they achieved on several principles underscores one of our big three secular investment themes for 2023, the transition to a multipolar world. Consider some of the following language from the G7 communique. First, there's discussion of efforts to make our supply chains more resilient, sustainable and reliable. Second, they discuss, quote, "Preventing the cutting edge technologies we develop from being used to further military capabilities that threaten international peace and security." Finally, there's also discussion of the, quote, "importance of cooperation on export controls, on critical and emerging technologies to address the misuse of such technologies by malicious actors and inappropriate transfers of such technologies."So that all may sound like the U.S. is drawing up hard barriers to commerce, particularly with places like China. But importantly, the communique also states an important nuance that's been core to our multipolar world thesis. They say, quote, "We are not decoupling or turning inwards. At the same time, we recognize that economic resilience requires de-risking and diversifying.". So to understand the practical implications of that nuance, we've been conducting a ton of research across different industries. My colleagues Ben Uglow and Shawn Kim have highlighted that the global manufacturing and tech sectors are very exposed to disruption from this theme. But their work also shows that capital equipment and automation companies will benefit from the global spend to set up more robust supply chains. So bottom line, the multipolar world theme continues to progress, but the disruption it creates should also create opportunities. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the show, please share Thoughts on the Market with a friend or colleague, or leave us a review on Apple Podcasts. It helps more people find the show.
The land the Israelities were about to take as their own had seven nations already residing in the land. Who were these people? Where did they come from? Why was God giving their land to the Israelites? We answer these questions on our devotion. This week on Musical Chairs, the guys take a more personal approach to their choices as they both select bands that resonate with them on a significantly deeper level. Dave takes a close look at Alter Bridge. Perhaps best known for Edge's theme song, there is much more to this band than just that. Dave & Patrick dispel the notion that Alter Bridge was nothing more than a Creed rip off here this week. Then Patrick introduces many of us (including Dave) to Seven Nations. This band, with its heavy Celtic influence and distinctive sound, never signed to a major label but has been putting out great music since the early 90's. We scratch the surface of a different kind of Seven Nations army right here on this week's installment of Musical Chairs! The Torah commands in Parashat Mishpatim (Shemot 23:32), in reference to the seven nations which inhabited the Land of Israel (Canaan) at that time, “Lo Tichrot Lahem Ve'l'Elohehem Berit” – that it is forbidden to make a treaty with these peoples. The Sefer Ha'hinuch explains that these nations – who are knowns as the seven nations of Canaan – were the “Ikar Aboda Zara Ve'yesod Ha'rishon” – the primary “foundation” of idol-worship in the ancient world. As G-d wants us to eliminate idolatrous beliefs and practices, so that all of humanity recognizes Hashem as the single, true G-d, we are commanded not to make peace with the Canaanite peoples, and to instead eliminate them. The Sefer Ha'hinuch adds that this command also forbids making a treaty with any idolatrous people, though a distinction exists in this regard between the seven Canaanite nations and other pagans. When it comes to the seven Canaanite nations, we are forbidden from making a treaty with them even if they do not seek to wage war against us. Since they are, as mentioned, the primary idolaters, we are not to deal peacefully them even if they are not interested in conflict. When it comes to other nations, however, we are permitted to enter into peace treaties with them as long as they do not seek to engage in conflict. Proof to this position may be drawn from the story told in the Book of Yehoshua of the Gibonim, a tribe that belonged to the seven nations and which approached Beneh Yisrael disguised as a foreign nation. Knowing that Beneh Yisrael set out to eliminate the seven nations, the Gibonim pretended to have originated from a distant land, and asked to make a treaty with Beneh Yisrael. Even after discovering that the Gibonim were actually from Eretz Yisrael, the leaders of Beneh Yisrael nevertheless decided to honor the treaty, and had them work as woodcutters and water-carriers. The Rabbis explained that they honored the treaty because if they had killed the Gibonim after having made a treaty with them, this would have created a Hilul Hashem (defamation of G-d). Although the treaty was made under deception, nevertheless, killing the Gibonim would have given the appearance of breaking an agreement, thus creating a Hilul Hashem. It emerges, then, that if not for the concern of a Hilul Hashem, Beneh Yisrael would have eliminated the Gibonim, even though they did not seek hostilities and were interested in peace. This proves that when it comes to the seven nations – as opposed to other pagan peoples – the prohibition against making a treaty applies even if these nations are not interested in war. Even when it comes to the seven nations, however, if they commit to abandon idolatry, then we may accept their repentance and make a treaty with them. Indeed, the Midrash (Debarim Rabba) relates that before Beneh Yisrael waged war against the seven nations, Beneh Yisrael's leader – Yehoshua – sent a message to these nations offering them peace in exchange for their rejection of idolatry. One who enters into a peace treaty with one of the seven nations, or a different pagan nation that is hostile to Beneh Yisrael, violates this prohibition. The violator does not receive Malkut, however, because this violation does not involve a concrete action. This prohibition reflects the broader notion that the Jewish People are charged with the responsibility of leading the entire world to the recognition of the one, true G-d. This mission will be fully accomplished in the times of Mashiah, when, as the famous prophecy foresees, “Ve'haya Hashem Le'melech Al Kol Ha'aretz, Be'yom Ha'hu Yiheyeh Hashem Ehad U'shmo Ehad” – “Hashem shall be the King over the entire earth; on that day, Hashem shall be one and His Name shall be one” (Zecharya 14:9).

The following is a letter from Rabbi Kivelevitz . Shalom Ubracha- It is quite unnecessary to state here how stressful the last ten months have been. As Klal Yisroel places an immeasurable value on learning and intellectual growth, many of us have weathered this storm by entrenching ourselves deeper into our rich literary heritage, discovering insight and inspiration and using the pause of hustle bustle activity to savor new texts and articulate probing questions. The tools of teleconferencing have generated the bracha of wide attendance in Shiurim and access to the world's finest Torah teachers. Energized by these positives, I am humbly offering to partner with all of you on a venture of discovery. Over twenty-five years ago, I listened with rapt attention as Professor Haym Soloveichick eulogized his father. He said the Rambam,Maimonides, was the Girsa DaYankusa of his father, which the prodigy grew up memorizing like nursery rhymes, with all of Mishna Torah etched in his memory and flowing easily from his lip. However,it was in that other Moshe, Nachmanides, that the elder Soloveichick discovered his intellectual approach and soul. It can be assumed that Rav Soloveichick's flowering as the premier Talmudist of our times was built in great part by contrasting the words of each of these Medieval teachers in areas they had both worked on, or where Ramban levels his often withering criticism of Rambam's position. There are scores of examples throughout Shas, and in particular in the work Nachmanides dedicated to staking his disagreements with his Egyptian counterpart-Hasagos to the Rambam's Sefer HaMitzvos. In his classic towering Perush on Chumash,Ramban forcefully attacks many of Rambam's explanations of mitzvos and interpretations of biblical events. In the coming weeks, we can together discover anew these diamond like gems of codification, inquiry analysis and poetic barbs that issued from these giants.....-armed with the salient texts, and buoyed by an enthusiasm to discover, I relish the prospect of learning with you. East of West comic book by Jonathan Hickman This is the world. It is not the one we wanted, but it is the one we deserved. Is a quote from the East of West comic book series. ----more---- The comic received nominations for Best Writer, Best Continuing Series, Best Artist, and Best Colorist from the Eisner Awards (unfortunately winning none of them). That’s massive amount of praise and honor surrounding this book East of West is a comic book series published by Image Comics Created by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Nick Dragotta, the book is a science fiction Western set in a dystopian version of the United States whose fate rests with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Things didn’t exactly go down in the American Civil War like expected. The war went on and on and on between the North and South; even the Native Americans got in on the fighting. Then, after years and years of fighting, a huge comet collided with the Earth and the people saw it as a sign to end. In 1908, America was divided up into the Seven Nations of America. On the same day, two figures from different walks of life, Elijah Longstreet and Red Cloud, told of something big on the horizon before they died. Several years later, another big figure dies, delivering out another message. When all three accounts were combined, they came together and created something called The Message. It is the story—or perhaps an actual account—of how the world will end. Flash forward to the year 2064 and that’s where the story begins. The Union: The north east region of the US The Confederacy: The southeast region of the US The Kingdom: Louisiana region of the US The Endless Nation: Central plains region of the US The Republic of Texas: Texas and Oklahoma region of the US PRA: Western region of the US, from the Rocky mountains to the pacific ocean The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Death, War, Famine, and Conquest) seek to bring about the end of the world. Their plans are interrupted when the daughter of the leader of the PRA falls in love with death. Essentially love conquers death. When I found this series it reminded me of the Stephen King Dark Tower series in some ways. Both are futuristic western post-apocalyptic worlds. The story has a lot of characters and can be difficult to follow at time. In some ways that makes it interesting too, because the reader doesn’t spend much time on one single character. Hickman has created an immense world for his characters to play in. When the series is done I hope he does a few short runs in the world he has created. The intrigue and deception the leaders of the 7 nations create is fun to follow. You never know what kind of coupe or assassination attempt they are going to try next. If you haven’t picked it up I suggest you do so. Image has put the entire series into an 8 volume set. On April of this year, Amazon Studios, Skybound Entertainment and Hickman are developing an hour-long series Binge reading comics In the age of streaming it’s no wonder my comic reading patterns have changed, have yours? It could be the fact for the most part I haven’t been into comics in almost 25 years. I bought some here and there during that time, but not like I did in the early 90’s. I might have a subconscious need to try and catch up. I think and you might have the same perspective, I like to be able to read a story from beginning to end without having to wait a month for the latest issue to come out. Just like binging a TV show on Netflix, binging on a comic book story is similar. I know many old timers like me have gone from getting the floppies as they are called to the TPB. Since it’s cheaper per issue to do it this way. If you are not a collector this is the way to go in my opinion. I am more of a lover of the story and art not the perceived value of the issue. If you like collecting for the value great, some people enjoy the hunt for certain issues. If you like that great! Either way keep reading and enjoy the format, whether it’s binging or month have fun. How have your reading habits changed over the years? Nerdy dads Recently I celebrated father’s day, and it was great. My kids know I’m nerdy and took me to a local comic book shop which also connects to a huge retro toy store with toys from the 70’s 80’s and 90’s. We spent hours looking and laughing at all sorts of things we saw. One son found some old DND players and DM guides written by Gary Gygax. Another son found one of those old mini Pac man arcade machines. At the comic shop they were selling stacks of comics for a dollar and for an old cheapskate like me that was right up my alley. Some of the comic in the stack were one I had lost because I was storing a long box in the basement and the AC condensation hose broke and was flooding the basement for days before we noticed. I know you are screaming to yourself what an idiot. In all fairness I had been storing them like this for over 26 years without an issue. But yes lesson learned. Anyway they heard me mention this and while I was looking at some other stuff they went and bought me a couple of stacks of comics. While I was there I saw a lady in the store who looking at comics and she found a TPB and commented to the store owner her dad loved the writer and was getting it for him. She also bought a few things for her husband. Her daughter who was with her also bought a few books for her dad. And paid for it herself, she was probably around 6 or 7 counting out her quarters and few dollars she had, it was heartwarming to see kids young and old and their nerdy dads interact with the things they nerd out about. Do you do nerdy things with your dad? Doesn’t have to be nerdy, but since this is a nerd podcast that’s what we focus on here. If you and your dad like to fish do it together, if you and your dad like to watch baseball do it together. Whatever it is do it together while you still can, he won’t be around forever. Take advantage of your time while you still can. In this weeks show, Meatloaf Kelly rants back at Fast Eddie with a great voicemail about penis size. The boys then discuss the ups and downs of pipe bands starting their competition seasons and go over some news stories. They finish up with a fun interview with Brad Green, piper from Seven Nations and Pipe Major of Rosie O'Grady's Highlanders Pipes and Drums. We talk about life on the road with a touring act, the differences between rock life and the pipe band life, and of course get into groupies, which is what everyone really wants to get in to anyway. I am God. Not the god of love, but God Almighty. I massacred the Amalekites and the Seven Nations of Canaan. I hacked Agag to pieces and blasted the barren fig tree, for the day of vengeance is in my heart. You lunar jackass, she betrayed you... guilty, guilty, guilty. The punishment is death. I've finally been processed. They made me adjust... to modern times. This is 1888, isn't it? I'm Jack. Cunning Jack. Quiet Jack. Jack whose sword never sleeps. Hats off, I'm Jack. Not the good shepherd. Not the prince of peace. I'm red Jack, spring-heeled Jack. Jack from hell. Trade name: Jack the Ripper.
