Episode Summary: In this thought-provoking episode of "Functional Health Radio," Dr. Kristin Hieshetter tackles the significant yet troubling topic of declining reproductive health in both men and women, and its wider implications for society. With a focus on the startling trends in fertility, chronic diseases in children, and the burgeoning healthcare expenditures that fail to curb these issues, the episode serves as an urgent call to action. In the wake of growing infertility rates, chronic diseases, and early onset puberty, Dr. Hieshetter prompts an exploration into the myriad ways our modern world impacts reproductive health. Highlighting a comprehensive study by Dr. Shanna H. Swan and discussing the pervasive nature of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, the conversation is a deep dive into the unsettling transformations faced by human biology over recent decades — and the sheer scale of this global health crisis. Key Takeaways: There is a significant and continuous decline in life expectancy and sperm counts in the US, emphasizing a reproductive health crisis. External environmental factors, such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, have profound effects on human development and reproductive systems. Chronic illnesses and the onset of puberty are occurring earlier in children, pointing towards a potential connection with increased exposure to harmful chemicals. Well-regulated diet, clean water, and reduced exposure to harmful substances can mitigate health risks. The episode stresses the importance of informed choices and proactive measures for long-term health benefits. Notable Quotes: "It's no longer business as usual when it comes to reproduction." - Dr. Shanna H. Swan "All living entities on earth are being forced to contend with disruptive biological realities that just didn't exist 100 years ago." "What we really needed to acknowledge is that all living entities on earth are being forced to contend with disruptive biological realities that just didn't exist 100 years ago." "We can't afford to keep hurting each other. We can't afford to keep hurting our babies, our grandchildren." Resources: Dr. Shanna H. Swan's book, "Countdown" Research Article by Dr. Shanna H. Exercise is phenomenal but if you work too hard than your genes are getting too dirty and they can't handle it and they start calling on other genes to support it and then they also get overworked and overburdened and you start breaking down." - Dr. Ben Lynch Dangers of Undiagnosed Histamine Intolerence "Histamine testing is inherently not very useful and that is why histamine tolerance is so undiagnosed. People literally struggle for decades; on average it goes undiagnosed for a minimum of 6 years. So people are struggling with all of these histamine-associated issues like sensitivity to Wi-Fi or perfumes and excessive irritability, difficulties falling asleep, headaches, exercise-induced asthma, eczema, psoriasis, diarrhea, chronic sinus issues, bloody noses, or ringing in your ears." - Dr. Ben Lynch Having a 'Nature First' Mindset "Humans need to always remember 'Nature first.' Anytime that you get stuck somewhere in your health, you need to come right back to the basics. Take off your shoes and socks and walk in nature. Walk on a forest floor, not grass that has been sprayed with chemicals. Go out in nature on a trail or step into the ocean or a lake. Just immerse yourself in Mother Nature and breathe that air; hopefully in a clean environment because that's where we came from, that's where we're going to end up again, and that's where we should be each day." - Dr. Ben Lynch Links From Today's Show  StrateGene® - Save 10% with the code 'JOSH' Seeking Health - Get 10% off of your order with the code 'JOSH' 353 Dr. Ben Lynch CV19 Truth Series: Protecting Your Health Freedom Dirty Genes by Dr. Ben Lynch Dr. Bruce Lipton 140 Chris Kresser Dopesick Official Trailer | Hulu Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker 297 Mike Mutzel: The Truth About Fasting 380 Mike Mutzel | Syndemic vs. Pandemic: What The Health Do We Do Now? “For our children and grandchildren” was the dedication at the start of my next guests book, Countdown, by Dr Shanna Swan, and since reading the book I now understand why. Because a man today has only half the number of sperm his grandfather had. Essentially a 50% drop in sperm counts over the past four decades. But, as you will hear, this isn't just affecting male fertility.Dr Shanna H. Swan, Ph.D., is one of the world's leading environmental and reproductive epidemiologists. She is Professor of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City where is also a member of the Transdisciplinary Center on Early Environmental Exposures and the Mindich Child Health and Development Institute. After reading a controversial paper reporting the decline in sperm quality in 1992 by Carlsen and colleagues, and being part of a group tasked with ratifying the results, Dr Swan has gone on to further study this dramatic decline in sperm count around the world. And for over twenty years, Dr. Swan and her colleagues have been studying the impact of environmental chemicals and pharmaceuticals on reproductive tract development and neurodevelopment. Her July 2017 paper “Temporal Trends in Sperm Count: a systematic review and meta-regression analysis” ranked #26 among all referenced scientific papers published in 2017 worldwide and shook the world with media outlets declaring “Who is killing our sperm”.Today's podcast is controversial and unpopular, but I can't hide away from this subject matter for fear of scare-mongering because it's one that could actually affect me personally. I'm yet to have children myself and the data is frankly scary. In 2017, Shanna Swan and her team of researchers completed a major study. They found that over the past four decades, sperm levels among men in Western countries have dropped by more than 50 percent. They came to this conclusion after examining 185 studies involving close to 45,000 healthy men. The result sent shockwaves around the globe—but the story didn’t end there. It turns out our sexual development is changing in broader ways, for both men and women and even other species, and that the modern world is on pace to become an infertile one. How and why could this happen? What is hijacking our fertility and our health? Count Down unpacks these questions, revealing what Swan and other researchers have learned about how both lifestyle and chemical exposures are affecting our fertility, sexual development—potentially including the increase in gender fluidity—and general health as a species. Engagingly explaining the science and repercussions of these worldwide threats and providing simple and practical guidelines for effectively avoiding chemical goods both as individuals and societies, Swan is a wake-up call. [Intro: 9:08] World-renowned environmental and reproductive epidemiologist Dr. Shanna Swan joins me to discuss her groundbreaking research identifying the causes and rate of rapid decline of fertility in the Western world, documented in her new book ‘Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race.’ Humanity is in peril. Along with the ecological devastation expanding industrialization has wrought on the global environment, another looming catastrophe has emerged in the past century that threatens the human species: rapid decline in fertility. The reproductive systems of females and males in industrialized, particularly Western, nations have seen a precipitous drop in the ability to conceive and bear children. From falling sperm counts and testosterone levels in males, and early menopause and cysts in the ovaries of females, the reproductive systems in human beings have dramatically changed for the worse over the past several decades. Dr. Swan has identified several of the main culprits in this ongoing trend, namely the absorption and ingestion of various endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in countless materials we interact with daily: phthalates from plastics and numerous hygiene products; Bisphenol A found in hard plastics and electronics; flame retardants in furniture; and pesticides in foods — just to name a few. Dr. Swan describes how these array of hormone disrupting chemicals impact the development of the reproductive system during crucial periods in human biological growth, of particular concern, in the gestation period. The potential outcome of all this is dire and stark. As highlighted in her book, and cited in the New York Times article ‘The Everyday Chemicals That Might Be Leading Us to Our Extinction’: "From 1973 to 2011, the total sperm count of men in Western countries dropped by 59 percent." (https://nyti.ms/3dDYTDk) Based on the findings of her research, she stated in a recent interview with The Guardian: "If you follow the curve from the 2017 sperm-decline meta-analysis, it predicts that by 2045 we will have a median sperm count of zero. It is speculative to extrapolate, but there is also no evidence that it is tapering off. This means that most couples may have to use assisted reproduction." (https://bit.ly/3arMGQ7) Of course, there are several important things that can be done to reverse this trend, which she outlines in this interview. Shanna H. Swan, Ph.D., is one of the world’s leading environmental and reproductive epidemiologists and a professor of environmental medicine and public health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. An award-winning scientist, her work examines the impact of environmental exposures, including chemicals such as phthalates and Bisphenol A, on men’s and women’s reproductive health and the neurodevelopment of children. In this latest issue of my weekly podcast, we discuss Biden's and the Democrats' agenda. The Senate has passed the massive $1.9B stimulus package. The bill is also set to pass the House this week. This was a major win for the Democrats. Not only is the package popular among the general public, but it has considerable support among Republican voters. Biden has now turned his efforts towards HR.1, a voting reform package. This bill has almost no chance of passing the Senate, and it takes away from Biden's focus. He would do much better by passing popular and widely understood economic measures. Myanmar protesters have a new target. As demonstrations against the recent military coup continue, protesters have turned towards the China embassy. While some are asking for China’s help, others blame the country for allowing the coup to happen in the first place. “Quad” summit planned for next week. Biden has organized a meeting between the US, India, Australia, and Japan. The purpose of the conference is to discuss strategies to counter China’s influence in the Pacific. According to inside sources, vaccine diplomacy is high on the agenda.Italy blocks vaccine exports. Prime Minister Mario Draghi used a new EU mechanism to block AstraZeneca vaccine exports to Australia. He earned huge support among Italy's populists (even Salvini is applauding) by arguing that since the company is behind in their EU contracts, they must first fulfill those agreements. Is there a new biological threat to fertility? In her new book Count Down, epidemiologist Shanna H. Swan warns of a coming crisis in reproductive health. The book argues that endocrine-disrupting chemicals in our environment are wreaking havoc on sperm counts and egg quality and weaken humankind's ability to reproduce.**********The content featured here is a small part of Hedgeye’s Demography Unplugged, a game-changing market intelligence product brought to you by historian, demographer and best-selling author Neil Howe.
