The conversation delves into Natalie's inspiring journey from struggling with asthma as a child to becoming a renowned fitness trainer, creator of the "Best Butt Ever" class at Equinox, and training a long list of celebrities. The trio discusses the importance of strength training for women, debunking the myth that lifting weights will make you "bulky." Natalie emphasizes the crucial role of resistance training in maintaining muscle mass, bone density, and overall health as we age. She also shares her personal experience of gaining strength in her 50's and encourages women to embrace their unique body shapes and focus on feeling strong and empowered. The conversation also touches on the pressures of the modeling industry, with Shanina sharing her experience of being told she was "too big" at a young age and the unhealthy habits she developed as a result. The women discuss the importance of self-acceptance, and the transformative power of weightlifting in sculpting and strengthening the body. Throughout the episode, Natalie shares practical tips on nutrition, such as the importance of consuming enough protein and eating a pre-workout snack to fuel strength training. The women also delve into the topic of hormones, birth control, and the impact of fasting on women's health. Natalie stresses the significance of self-care, recovery, and listening to your body to avoid overtraining and maintain optimal health. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting your journey, this episode offers valuable insights, inspiration, and a refreshing perspective on women's strength, empowerment, and the lifelong benefits of embracing an active lifestyle. Hey Girl Hey! Happy Thursday! When you are chained & programmed to food thoughts controlling your every day, you measure your success by lack. You allow yourself less, you run on less, you wish to weigh less, you thrive on consuming less. Disordered eating becomes a game & you measure success on personal satisfaction & achievement on whether you do it "right" or eat "right", always feeling as though you are never enough, never worthy enough, or never thin enough. Life really is so much more than this! In today's episode on the podcast, I share with you 11 victories that you can celebrate along the way that have nothing to do with scale accomplishment or defining your sole purpose on this planet around a metric or number. Send us a Text Message. This week's guest is Kira Onysko.  Kira and I bonded over our mutual love of Paul Rudd AND our work as trainers in the non diet space.Kira is a size inclusive personal trainer based in Ontario, Canada. After developing her own food & body image struggles due to mainstream fitness culture, she now promotes a body-neutral approach to health & fitness and helps her clients to focus on how their workouts make them feel, rather than look.  She's preaching to the choir. We explored the idea that perhaps the new drive for women to look 'strong not skinny' is diet culture in a different jacket and is still so aesthetics driven. How can we actually begin to repair our relationship with movement? How can we find balance between listening to our bodies and seeing what our bodies are capable of?  How can we begin to separate exercise and weight loss?  What's the first step?Kira talks about her first experience whilst doing a BSC in exercise science hearing about Health at Every Size and whilst initially outraged, how she had been blindsided and came to understand that maybe the fitness industry can got things very wrong. We hear how the need to look and perform a certain way infiltrated Kira's life from childhood and only recently has she been able to reclaim movement for herself and choose exactly what she WANTS to do and what truly lights her up.  And it isn't cardio.....;)You can find Kira on Instagram,  through her website or through her own podcast - The Wellness Pod.  You can work with her 1 to 1 or through her online coaching program. Are you feeling stuck in the 'earn and burn' cycle with your exercise routine, or as summer approaches, are you feeling self-conscious about wearing a swimsuit on the beach? In 2017, a scientist and her team of researchers completed a major study. They found that over the past four decades, sperm levels among men in Western countries have dropped by more than 50 percent. The result sent shockwaves around the globe—but the story didn’t end there. It turns out our sexual development is changing in broader ways, for both men and women and even other species, and that the modern world is on pace to become an infertile one. How and why could this happen? What is hijacking our fertility and our health? The scientist who led that research team, Dr. Shanna Swan, joined us with her coauthor Stacey Colino in a conversation facilitated by Town Hall Senior Correspondent Steve Scher to unpack these startling discoveries. As contained in her book Count Down: How Our Modern World Is Threatening Sperm Counts, Altering Male and Female Reproductive Development, and Imperiling the Future of the Human Race, Dr. Swan and her team examined 185 studies involving close to 45,000 healthy men. She and Colino shared what they discerned about how both lifestyle and chemical exposures are affecting our fertility, sexual development, and general health as a species. With accessible explanations of the threats and repercussions, they presents an urgent wake-up call to action in protecting our future. Shanna H. Swan, PhD, is an award-winning scientist based at Mt. Sinai and one of the leading environmental and reproductive epidemiologists in the world. Dr. Swan has published more than 200 scientific papers and has been featured in extensive media coverage around the world. Her appearances include ABC News, NBC Nightly News, 60 Minutes, CBS News, PBS, BBC, and NPR, as well as in leading magazines and newspapers, including Newsweek, The Washington Post, Time, and many more. Stacey Colino is an award-winning writer specializing in health and environmental issues and a regular contributor to US News & World Report. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post Health section and in dozens of national magazines, including Newsweek, Parade, Woman’s Day, Sports Illustrated, and Good Housekeeping. She is the coauthor with David Katz of Disease-Proof: The Remarkable Truth About What Makes Us Well; Strong is the New Skinny with Jennifer Cohen; Good Food Fast! with Jason Roberts; and Taking Back the Month with Diana Taylor. Steve Scher is a podcaster, interviewer, and teacher. He worked in Seattle public radio for almost 30 years. He has taught at the University of Washington since 2009. In late 2016, after struggling to recover from a common cold, Tracey-Lee realised that she needed to change her way of life. Her doctor informed her that if she did not lose the weight now and commit to a healthy and active lifestyle, that she would develop diabetes and other catastrophic health concerns. Tracey-Lee realised that her way of life then had led her to gain more than 50KGs in the preceding two years and, as such, she chose to make some serious changes. She embarked on a mission to prove to herself that she could achieve anything she put her mind to. In order to remain accountable, Tracey-Lee made the brave and vulnerable decision to share her honest journey on Instagram and created her account @fitnessgirl_za. Initially her intention was for the account to be her commitment device and to act as a visual diary of her own progress and achieved goals. With dedication and commitment and lots of hard work, she endlessly sought the happiness that she believed would undoubtedly be found in her “goal weight”. However, @fitnessgirl_za eventually turned into so much more; it became a testimony of realising her innate worthiness, regardless of her size or weight. The happiness, she realised, was always there irrespective of her weight. Tracey-Lee is the full package. Not only is she a fitness motivator and body positive advocate/influencer, she is also a full time family law attorney. To this day, she holds the eyes of over 22,000 women from around the world, all shapes, sizes and nationalities, who are inspired by her truth, humility and very public internal shift from goals to gratitude. In this episode we unpack how Tracey-Lee's purpose and intentions for her brand shifted from aesthetic weight conscious goals to self-love and body positive goals; all while sharing her mental health shift publicly and with vulnerability over the last 4 years. We discuss why she is a mental health warrior, her tips for how she handles her anxiety, how she juggles the balance between her legal career and her personal brand, and so much more. Most importantly, we address how “healthy” is the new skinny and worthiness is a CHOICE made within. It was a dream to speak with such an authentic, raw, and motivational person – I am truly inspired, and you will be too. Happy listening! While everyone has different bodies and unique health struggles, the tests offered through Next|Health will show which areas that you need to improve on in addition to customized plans that are made just for you. Key Takeaway: Optimizing your health is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistently exercising, tracking progress, and building little habits will make a huge difference. Highlights: There seems to be a connection between fit people and successful people, due to the discipline and goal setting that fitness teaches Jen Cohen details her impressive career as a music company executive and her transition into creating a brand out of herself and becoming an entrepreneur Basic exercise is by far the healthiest thing you can do for your body. To avoid fad diets, analyze whether a diet or exercise is sustainable for your lifestyle. Be mindful about what works best for you Tracking and journaling your progress is a necessary step to being accountable and meeting long-term goals To truly optimize your health, you need to take biomarkers into account and examine things such as hormone levels, gut health, heart health, ancestry, etc. The only way to get better is to ask questions and learn from people who know more than you do. Now her other half had the magazine in hand and was and continued through the entire orientation and class referring to this magazine as the new bible and how big/fat was the future and that working out and healthy was sorta a thing of the past. What patterns of difficulty she noticed in high achievers, executives, and celebrities like Britney Spears while helping them build healthier lifestyles. Her experience working for the music industry in marketing and how she transitioned from that into helping train the artists as a personal fitness coach. How her fitness habits evolved into new strategies once she became a mom which she shares in her latest book and program, Badass Body Goals. Her 4-3-2-1 HIIT fitness program to help people, especially busy moms, get fit and get great results. Why HIIT training is the most effective way to burn the most amount of calories in the least amount of time yet you shouldn't do it every day. The importance of constantly tweaking your workouts to stay strong, in shape, and get more results every day. Why exercise isn't enough unless you also focus on a healthier diet, mental health, hydration, stretching, mobility, and more. What drives her to keep creating content when life is challenging. The importance of always growing both emotionally and spiritually in your own unique wellness journey. How to lead by example and why that's the best motivation for anybody. The 6-morning habits that are destroying our productivity. Why hitting the snooze button is making you less productive, gives you less energy, and makes you procrastinate for the rest of the day. Why we're not getting enough human interaction and what we can do to turn things around by having a conversation within the first hours of being awake. Strategic practices she helps her executive clients work on to keep them healthy during their busy, long working hours. How you can know when it's time to let go of your personal trainer. What she does to balance her career and family life in order to help alleviate overwhelm. How she helped create a strategy to help her stay on track and avoid pitfalls in her healthy lifestyle through discipline and goals. The vital importance of relieving stress and how you can do that through balance and finding what makes you happy in multiple areas. Power Quotes From The Show "Being mentally fit makes you physically fit. Being present, conscious, having set intentions and goals is the most important part. Losing weight and staying fit is a by-product of all of that." - Jennifer Cohen "All of your focus on fitness is for naught if your diet is not there. 80% of your results come from what you eat and the other 20% is tweaking and toning your workouts. You can't do one without the other."  - Jennifer Cohen "As we get older and have more stressors in life, it's important that we do a lot for our wellness and mind through a holistic approach that's not just nutrition and exercise. What are you doing for your wellbeing? What are you doing for your reflection? Are you drinking enough water? What are you doing for your mobility; are you stretching? There are a lot of different things in the wellness umbrella that are important."  - Jennifer Cohen "Having a goal of getting stronger versus getting skinnier is a more positive message than just losing weight and it's a healthier place to be mentally. Exercise helps to build confidence and mental strength. The stronger you get physically, the more confidence you will have and the stronger you will feel mentally."  - Jennifer Cohen "Motivation comes and goes. You can go to a Tony Robbins seminar and be super motivated and then within the next day, that feeling starts to wane. Same with willpower; it ebbs and flows. You shouldn't be relying on motivation and willpower; you have to build healthy habits and routines to keep you on a path for long-term success. Once you're on autopilot with that healthy behavior and you don't even have to think about exercise or nutrition,  you can use your brain for other things that need your attention." - Jennifer Cohen Links From Today's Show   Jennifer Cohen Facebook Twitter Instagram Badass Body Goals Strong Is The New Skinny No Gym Required Habits & Hustle Podcast 6 Morning Habits That Are Destroying Your Productivity No-Gym Workout With Jennifer Cohen Surrounding Yourself With The Right People Changes Everything Four Ways Your Inner Circle Is Crucial To Your Success 10 Things Healthy People Have in Common How to Set Fitness Goals You'll Actually Achieve This No-Gym, HIIT Workout Gets the Job Done in 10 Minutes A Winter Workout to Improve Your Focus About Jennifer Cohen Jennifer Cohen is a leading fitness and wellness authority, best-selling author, entrepreneur and frequent guest on national media.  She was recently named in “ Greatist” 100 most influential people in Health and Fitness and #16 Most Impactful Fitness Entrepreneurs on Web MD. Jordan is known for coaching Gary Vaynerchuk and setting a world record for deadlifting 4 times his bodyweight however he is probably most well known for putting out consistently helpful content and specialising in strength and fat loss. We chat about having “bright lines” when it comes to nutrition to keep you on track, the truth about just “loving yourself” and maintaining weight loss. We also cover how phrases like “strong is the new skinny' can do more harm than good. I ask about his choices to now compete in boxing and he discloses his most embarrassing gym moment to date. Jodi Baretz had me having serious a-ha moments. Her description of why we should be aware of mindfulness, and the benefits it has for us, tugged hard at my heartstrings. Welcome to Her Rules Radio - where we shake off the old rules and do what works for us! So, I turned 42 this week! To celebrate, we played hooky and kept my son out of school and went and had brunch and went to the planetarium, and just spent the entire day together! We had the best time together and it really made me realize the importance of play in our lives. We need more fun and play in our lives.   Listen as Alex shares a story about her client Erin, and how they had to work on play. Because of a rough upbringing, she found that she lived a virtually joyless life. Alex shares the advice she gave Erin to help her incorporate play and fun into her life!  Without enough play, everything “health wise” in our lives is out of whack. We need to have fun. The amount that you allow yourself to play will return huge dividends to your health and well-being.   In this episode, Alex explains what play really is and all of the health benefits that we can enjoy. You have to take action to change habits and play helps you take action. You can incorporate play into your personal life! Alex keeps a hula hoop, a mini-trampoline, and pink roller skates around her house so she can easily grab them for a play session. It’s healthy to be playful and it’s the key to health and happiness. Play can help you actually like your body. When you like yourself, you actually treat yourself better! Keep some toys around and use the often. Playful people can transform any environment to make it more enjoyable. We all want to be around playful people, and then we are inspired to be playful too!   The last Saturday of April, we are hosting Her Playdate (www.herplaydate.com) and it’s a global movement to encourage women to get out and have a play date with all your best friends.   Katie Willcox is the founder and CEO of Natural Model Management and Healthy is the New Skinny. In the April issue an article about Building a Better Body Image caught my attention. Skinny ain’t what it use to be.. SEXY IS THE NEW SKINNY I would like to usher in a new paradigm of what it means to be skinny. I am redefining skinny. Women have come into their power since the sixties and it’s time for a New Skinny to immerge. So that you can understand why I have a strong personal stake in redefining skinny, I go into it in the next paragraph. I do not want one person on this planet to suffer the way I did trying to get skinny when it is not even the popular body type any longer. Hallelujah!! -Dying To Be Skinny When I was suffering with anorexia as teenager, all I could think about was getting skinny enough to look good in my cheer and dance costumes and not be afraid of my top slipping up when I did a round off or a split leap. Little did I know that I was suffering for no reason, I was blindly following the starvation trend at the time not understanding what I was doing to my body and my psyche.
