About the Guest(s): Dr. Kristin Hieshetter is a celebrated expert in functional health, dedicated to helping individuals achieve optimal well-being through targeted, practical advice. Dr. Hieshetter has extensively studied the impacts of environmental toxins on human health and is renowned for her insightful podcasts aimed at equipping listeners with actionable steps to improve their lives. She focuses particularly on the intersection of environmental toxicity and chronic diseases, bringing a wealth of knowledge and passion to her audience. Episode Summary: In this gripping episode of "Functional Health Radio," Dr. Kristin Hieshetter delves into the alarming decline in life expectancy in the United States and the rising incidence of chronic diseases among children. She emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing the role of environmental toxins, particularly PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which have infiltrated our everyday lives through water supplies, food packaging, and household items. As Dr. Hieshetter reveals, these toxins pose severe threats to various bodily systems, including the liver, thyroid, and nervous system, and are linked to conditions like autism and thyroid dysfunction. Dr. Hieshetter masterfully explains the numerous pathways through which PFAS can wreak havoc on the human body, such as disrupting lipid metabolism and causing epigenetic changes. Through her detailed analysis, she underscores the importance of water filtration, avoidance of fast food, and the need for proper supplementation. Moreover, she highlights the critical role of thyroid health in overall well-being, exemplified by cases of misdiagnosed dementia being successfully treated with thyroid hormone regulation. This episode serves as a foundational guide for anyone looking to detoxify their environment and enhance their health by making informed choices. Key Takeaways: The Decline in Life Expectancy: The U.S. is experiencing a significant drop in life expectancy rates for both men and women, a distressing trend exacerbated by rising chronic diseases in children. The Dangers of PFAS: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are linked to various health issues, including thyroid dysfunction and autism, due to their interference with amino acid metabolism, lipid metabolism, and epigenetic changes. Environmental Action Steps: Implementing measures such as using activated carbon filters for water purification and avoiding fast food are crucial for reducing PFAS exposure. Thyroid and Brain Health: Proper thyroid function is essential for brain development and overall health, and dysfunctions here can mimic other serious conditions like dementia. Supplementation and Detoxification: Effective detox methods including specific supplements and dietary changes are necessary to counteract the impacts of PFAS and support overall health. Notable Quotes: "According to the World Economic Forum, the US spends $12,530 per person per year on healthcare. What's wrong? How do we fix it?" - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter "We have a huge passion for what's called a neuro excitotoxin and environmental chemical overload." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter "This is your homework, everybody. I want you to go to the Environmental Working Group website, and I want you to type in water safety reports." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter "PFAS screws up amino acid metabolism and the metabolic pathways." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter "Thyroid hormones are essential for brain development, and thyroid influences brain function throughout life." - Dr. Kristin Hieshetter Resources: Environmental Working Group (EWG) Website Research Articles: "Prenatal Exposure to Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, Maternal Thyroid Dysfunction and Autism Spectrum Disorder" from the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, December 2022. Episode Summary: In this thought-provoking episode of "Functional Health Radio," Dr. Kristin Hieshetter tackles the significant yet troubling topic of declining reproductive health in both men and women, and its wider implications for society. With a focus on the startling trends in fertility, chronic diseases in children, and the burgeoning healthcare expenditures that fail to curb these issues, the episode serves as an urgent call to action. In the wake of growing infertility rates, chronic diseases, and early onset puberty, Dr. Hieshetter prompts an exploration into the myriad ways our modern world impacts reproductive health. Highlighting a comprehensive study by Dr. Shanna H. Swan and discussing the pervasive nature of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, the conversation is a deep dive into the unsettling transformations faced by human biology over recent decades — and the sheer scale of this global health crisis. Key Takeaways: There is a significant and continuous decline in life expectancy and sperm counts in the US, emphasizing a reproductive health crisis. External environmental factors, such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, have profound effects on human development and reproductive systems. Chronic illnesses and the onset of puberty are occurring earlier in children, pointing towards a potential connection with increased exposure to harmful chemicals. Well-regulated diet, clean water, and reduced exposure to harmful substances can mitigate health risks. The episode stresses the importance of informed choices and proactive measures for long-term health benefits. Notable Quotes: "It's no longer business as usual when it comes to reproduction." - Dr. Shanna H. Swan "All living entities on earth are being forced to contend with disruptive biological realities that just didn't exist 100 years ago." "What we really needed to acknowledge is that all living entities on earth are being forced to contend with disruptive biological realities that just didn't exist 100 years ago." "We can't afford to keep hurting each other. We can't afford to keep hurting our babies, our grandchildren." Resources: Dr. Shanna H. Swan's book, "Countdown" Research Article by Dr. Shanna H. Join us in part 2 of our Sexy Summer Series where we talk about how our oh, so sexy hormones get dysregulated. We talk about things like toxicity, external as well as internal factors, and what having dysregulated hormones really means. “There is an estimated 2000 additional new chemicals that are developed and put into commercial use every year. The TSCA, who's responsible for testing chemicals in United States, only tests about 20 chemicals at a time. And that testing takes a few years. So even if they find a problem, the companies using those chemicals get a five-year window to phase out the usage of that chemical.”The three things we focus on in this episode are:Transitions in your homeTransitions in your dietTransitions in  your supplemental healthcareThis episode goes really deep into all things toxic, what alternatives we can make, and how to make those transitions, including detoxification. But the goal is the more you know, the more informed you are, the more you make change, the more you improve, the more you gain vibrancy and wellness. We need to make sure that we are doing our job to take out the things that are easy, low hanging fruit to start with. See if we see some changes. And if you don't see changes, keep digging deeper. And that's really the theme of peeling back the onion. It's sort of like, take that first layer off and see how you feel. Take off that next layer and see how you feel. Take off the next layer, and the next layer, and the next layer. Keep going until you feel balanced. Links:Environmental Working Group https://www.ewg.org/Lara Adler - Environmental Toxin Nerd https://www.laraadler.com/Not So Pretty on HBO Maxhttps://www.hbomax.com/series/urn:hbo:series:GYjJrvg7QksLDwgEAAAAGThink Dirty apphttps://thinkdirtyapp.com/Make sure to follow us on Instagram. On this episode, Greg is joined by Dr. Melissa Strong, founder and lead data scientist for IndiOmics. Her background is in molecular biology and epigenetics—or how our environment can affect our gene expression. The idea behind IndiOmics started when Dr. Strong was pregnant with her son and interested in better understanding chemical exposure in utero. The organization's mission is to educate the public about common chemicals that have the ability to affect us on a cellular level and what we can do to avoid or prevent exposure. Much of its work focuses on endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Participants receive a kit, provide a sample from home and ship the kit to the IndiOmics laboratory. When the results are ready, they can login for a personalized look at what they've been exposed to, how it's affecting them on a molecular level and steps they can take to avoid or prevent additional exposure. For example, they may be able to cut down on EDC exposure by not heating or microwaving plastics. Dr. Strong explains that our gene expression is not set in stone, and our environment and behaviors play a significant role in determining our health. Particularly with EDCs, science has demonstrated the toxicity of even very low levels of chemical exposure. To learn more about what you can do to reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals, even if you don't know your levels, Dr. Strong recommends visiting the Environmental Working Group's website, www.ewg.org, and referencing the IndiOmics Healthy Living Pocket Guide at www.indiomics.org/pocket-guide. Looking to the future, Dr. Strong is encouraged by younger generations' awareness around this issue and believes that consumer demand will drive action on the part of manufacturers and regulators alike to further reduce the use of harmful chemicals in consumer products. She also believes that blood tests on endocrine exposures will eventually become a part of routine medical care, empowering more people to understand their exposure levels and take steps to improve their health.

There's been a lot of attention paid to poor living conditions in privatized military housing over the last several years. But as the Pentagon's inspector general documented in a sweeping report last year, the Defense Department's own housing facilities have problems too. A team of 14 auditors, engineers and program analysts found systemic management weaknesses that exposed service members to lead, radon and other hazards in government-owned housing. For their work, the DoD IG team was just recognized with the annual Glenn/Roth Award for Exemplary Service by the Council of Inspectors General for Integrity and Efficiency. To talk more about the work that went into that specific project – and the OIG's other ongoing work on military housing issues – the Federal Drive with Tom Temin spoke to Jamessia Blunt, a program manager in the OIG's infrastructure branch.

I'm excited to have Lara Adler as my guest for today's show! Lara is an Environmental Toxins Expert and Educator. She is a Certified Holistic Health Coach, who teaches health coaches, nutritionists, and other holistic health practitioners how to eliminate the number one thing holding their clients back from the results they are seeking- the unaddressed link between chemicals and chronic health problems. Lara trains practitioners to become experts in everyday toxic exposures so they can improve client outcomes without spending hundreds of hours researching on their own. The information about environmental toxins that Lara will be sharing today is vital for you, the listeners, on many different levels. People are often surprised to learn that there is not much protection in the US, even though we have federal agencies designed to protect consumers. Even from my perspective, as a savvy, allopathic, western medicine, functionally-trained nurse practitioner, I learned a lot from Lara that I did not know before, so stay tuned today to hear about the nasty truth behind environmental toxins. This episode is important, so be sure to listen to it several times, take actionable steps, and share it with your loved ones!  IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN Lara discusses the scope of the issue of environmental toxins. Why the products in the marketplace are not guaranteed to be safe. Our skin is our largest organ, yet most people don't even think of skin as an organ. We absorb many of the chemicals and compounds that we put on our skin. How the levels of chemicals, and the associations between chemical exposures and certain illnesses or outcomes, are determined. Lara talks about what sparked her interest in the area of environmental toxins. Lara talks about endocrine-disrupting chemicals. She explains what they are and why we need to be concerned about them. Lara talks about phthalates and some of the other more common obesogens. We need to be a voice for others and protect those who have no access to workable solutions or organic food. How to make meaningful changes, starting with things that are free and easy. The problem with non-stick cookware. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. Lara shares some healthy resources. Disinfectant compounds are touted as virus killing but what else can they do to our health? Are disinfectants and COVID-19 both cause for concern? An exposure scientist helps listeners untangle some of these issues. Listen and learn What are disinfectants and how they work, How studies indicate possible long-term development and reproductive effects from disinfectant exposures, and What safer alternatives to disinfectants exist including soap and water and masks.  A Chemical Exposure scientist discusses EPA's List N, which is a list of over 400 compounds that meet the EPA's criteria for use to kill SARS-CoV-2 particles. Two hundred of those listed are actually harmful "quats," or quaternary ammonium compounds. She helps listeners understand what this means and brings her big-picture thinking to our current reactive climate of applying disinfectants uniformly. Her work includes researching chemicals in consumer products we come in contact with in our daily lives, including personal care products, disinfectants, and pesticides. She tells listeners that the disinfectants that are being used for COVID are actually considered pesticides, which is a cause for concern for our environment and health. She says the only requirement for a compound to be on List N is the ability to kill the virus. There are no considerations for the safety of repeated use of such disinfectants. She is especially concerned that such products are being applied to school settings when there are safer alternatives like using soap and water on hands and wearing masks. She adds that modes of exposure can be from non dietary ingestion like hand-to-mouth, but the main route of exposure is airborne, from fogging or spraying. Good ventilation can be key, but schools are often older buildings with bad ventilation systems.  Listen in for what to consider in how we keep our communities safe, both short and long-term. Across the United States, thousands of people, most of them in low-income or minority communities, live next to heavily polluting industrial sites. In Sacrifice Zones: The Front Lines of Toxic Chemical Exposure in the United States, Steve Lerner tells the stories of twelve communities, from Brooklyn to Pensacola, that rose up to fight the industries and military bases causing disproportionately high levels of chemical pollution. He calls these low-income neighborhoods “sacrifice zones”—repurposing a Cold War term coined by U.S. government officials to designate areas contaminated with radioactive pollutants during the manufacture of nuclear weapons. Join Michael Lerner in a conversation with Steve about the residents of a new generation of “sacrifice zones,” tainted with chemical pollutants, who need additional regulatory protections.

A study conducted in Hawaii revealed that exposure to high levels of occupational pesticides can increase the risk of having heart diseases. People may be exposed to occupational pesticides when their work requires the preparation and application of such chemicals or when they have to enter a place where pesticides are applied. Agricultural, factory, and industrial workers are usually the ones exposed to these harmful chemicals. Researchers from the University of Hawaii found that these workers had about a 45% higher chance of developing heart diseases or stroke. According to the lead researcher, pesticides usually remain in the body for several years because they have a long half-life. Thus, the negative effects of pesticide exposure may still appear even after 10 to 20 years. In fact, the researchers found that the greatest effects manifested within 10 years of being exposed to the chemicals. To come up with their findings, the researchers analyzed data gathered from 7,557 Japanese-American men born between 1900 and 1919 and lived in Oahu [oh-AH-hoo], Hawaii. The Occupational Safety Health Administration exposure scale was used to measure the amount of pesticide these workers encountered during work hours. The researchers also took into account the workers' occupation, age, and years of work experience. They were able to monitor and collect the subjects' medical and employment records for up to 34 years. In line with these findings, the lead researcher said that workers should prioritize their safety by always wearing appropriate gear and clothing. It is also crucial for workers to keep medical records of any possible pesticide exposures they may have encountered at work.

New research shows a relationship between phthalates and deficits in cognitive function in rats. This podcast explores what the findings could mean to humans and society as a whole. Investigators call it a "cautionary study" that shows exposure to phthalates at critical stages in human development could lower the baseline of how smart humans are as a society and while it may be difficult to prove over time, "enough evidence in animals of various sorts, should make us worried." The research team successfully mimicked the average phthalates exposure in humans with subjects and found the subjects exposed responded slower to task changes, behaved differently than those not exposed, and showed physical changes to the front part of their brain.
