It's not an engineering formula where certain inputs result in certain outputs. There's just too much randomness. And as I said, nondeterminism is out there, and every age, era, context, startup, and individual are so radically different. So it's highly unpredictable. Yet, as I said, timeless methods. And then, as you noted—and I write in the book—timely tools. I mean, the tools, they're not just getting better every year, every month, every week, every day. Strategy in startups is all about test selection10:36: This question of test selection being strategy is the essence of what founders need to think through because, anytime you have an organization with limited bandwidth and a limited envelope of resources and capital, you need to make prioritization decisions. You need to focus, and so what I advise founders, both that I teach and also through my Flybridge investment activities, is that they should select the tests that are going to uncover the most controversial part of their business model and have the highest likelihood of leading to a valuation inflection point if the test is successful.Why judgment, strategy, and creativity are timeless values for founders51:26: The notion that founders need to leverage their strategic thinking, creativity, and human judgment—and apply that again and again to prioritize these scarce resources—even if the resources can be stretched more fully—is still a competitive market, and everybody is stretching the resources and being more productive. I still think that that judgment is going to be very valuable.AI won't replace founders—but founders who don't use AI will be replaced47:41: AI is not going to replace founders anytime soon; but founders who don't use AI are going to replace founders who don't. I also believe that joiners who use AI are going to replace joiners who don't, that our portfolio companies are looking for AI-native employees, and that we may see a world where employees and candidates come to companies instead of with a team of engineers, marketers, or salespeople, as we have seen in the past—as the HubSpot mafia travels from company to company. [48:32] So I think there's going to be just a really rich set of opportunities for native joiners, and there's going to be a high bar that will be tested by employers about whether their individuals are native and facile with the AI tools.

The man is directed to build a giant ship and bring aboard animals, who will spend an indefinite amount of time living, sleeping, and eating alongside Noah and his family. This cryptic, elliptical ancient story has inspired theological commentary, architecture, and children's toys, giving us an abundance of metaphors and narratives to understand our past, present, and future climate crises. Our continuing attempts to critically examine the ark narrative and its long afterlife in our imagination is the subject of Jeffrey J. Cohen and Julian Yates's new book Noah's Arkive, just published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2023. This episode covers a lot of ground ~ Dr. Roth answers some of the most requested questions in relation to Dr. Roth's additional training as a trauma surgeon. Dr. Roth gained much of this type of medical hands-on-experience while working in several hospitals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US (population 1.5 million). Primarily dealing with two major sets of wounds, termed as “blunt” injury, from auto accidents, and “penetrating” injury, from knife stabbings and gun shootings. Dr. Roth recalls some notable memories which are astounding to hear. Listen as Dr Roth explains how the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLAS) program originated in the United States in the 70s through the tragic experience of James Styner, an orthopedic surgeon. He was piloting a light plane and crashed it into a field in Nebraska, USA. Sadly, this air-crash instantly killed his wife, critically injured three of his four children, and James Styner sustained serious blunt trauma chest,head and eye injuries. It took fourteen hours before Doctor Styner and his children received life-saving medical help! Doctor Styner vowed to improve the response time and how trauma patients are received at local and city hospitals. Thus, the ATLAS program started its development. Now, any trauma patient who is received in a hospital by staff specifically trained for such cases have a much higher chance of survival and recovery. Every physician and hospital professional knows what they have to do and act in unison, coordinated by a team leader, and following the ATLAS (Advanced Trauma Life Support).protocol treatment procedure. Dr. Roth then answers the question about sports injuries with kids and young teenagers – what to lookout for with possible “blunt” trauma injuries. This is a fascinating new season 4 episode to start off 2023. The same rule applies for the first two days of shotgun deer season on December 4th and 5th. It also applies to deer taken with archery equipment. Check stations allow state biologists with the help of volunteers to collect samples and take data that provides insight into the overall health of Rhode Island's deer population. The check stations are located in Exeter, Richmond, Glocester, West Kingston and Tiverton. Deer taken on Patience Island, Prudence Island, and Block Island are exempt, but must still be reported using the online system. Russ was born in New London, CT and  lived in Stonington and North Stonington for most of his life. Russ attended the UCONN where he earned a bachelors degree. He then earned masters degrees from both Trinity College and Eastern Connecticut State University. Before retiring from teaching, he earned a law degree from UCONN Law School. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in India, and numerous fellowships to universities and colleges around the country. He worked as a social studies teacher for the town of Groton for some 20 years, where he is often fondly remembered for playing piano for his students. Russ also served as President of the New London Central Labor Council in 1967 while representing the Groton Teacher's Union. Russ was an avid traveler, often with various members of his family, always with his wife. He visited over 60 countries and every state in the union consistently making new friends wherever he went. While there, he would pursue other interests such as rock and mineral hounding or genealogy. Russ traced his line back to multiple Mayflower passengers and to Charlemagne. Russ played the piano and performed many weekends in local bands. At home he enjoyed listening to all kinds of music and sharing his huge musical selection with anyone wanting to listen. He was an avid fan of the UCONN huskies, particularly the women's basketball team whom he watched in person attending their home games and following them to several Final Fours. Russell Stewart was an amazing man who touched the lives of countless people. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 65 years, his sons, his daughter, his half sister, many family members, and all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hello everyone and welcome back. In this episode Patrick has Jeffrey J Higgins on the show. Jeffrey is a retired DEA Supervisory Special Agent with 25 years of law enforcement experience. Jeffrey is also an expert on narco-terrorism. During his career with the DEA, Jeffrey accomplished many things but one of the biggest was attaining the first two, precedent setting, narco-terrosim convictions at trail and assisting in the conviction of the world's most prolific heroin trafficker. Jeffrey and Patrick talk about many issues from the War ond Drugs, The many threats facing the United States and the issues facing Law Enforcement to name a few. Jeffrey was one of the first rescuers to arrive at the World Trade Center after it collapsed on 9/11 and he worked on the NYPD Joint Terrorism Task force in the Department of Homeland Security's Operation Center.  Jeffrey then went on to become the first undercover agent in Afghanistan after the soviet invasion and the first western law enforcement officer to testify in both the Kabul Public Security Court and the Afghan Central Narcotics Tribunal. Jeffrey has worked as a news reporter and editor, and deputy sheriff and was elected commissioner for the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions in Washington, DC. Jeffrey holds a Masters of Sciene in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelors of Science in journalism from Boston University. Jeffrey is currently working on his first book, and he is a contributer to the Law Enforcement Round Table Podcast. A great interview with a great member of law enforcement and a great American.
