"'Too Bad, So Sad, Maybe Next Birth' was a phrase my parents would say whenever something was out of my control and didn't go exactly according to plan," Shyama Golden wrote on the subject of her new solo show of the same name for PM/AM in London. "It feels to me like a short phrase that embodies the entire human struggle, like Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill." The Los Angeles-based painter has created a universe where reincarnation, generational trauma and suffering (and a sense of humor to cope with it), Sri Lankan folktales and a personal journey through time and the soul's journey through eras. Golden told me she wanted to create a works that spoke of "past lives because this framework challenges the idea of an essential self, a fixed history, and linear progress." And so she is creating her own story, not the next birth, but this birth. In this conversation from The Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast, I spoke with Shyama in LA just before her trip to London, just after her husband, Paul Trillo, showed me an incredible AI-generated film he created with her that will premiere in short form at the PM/AM show but will continue to be worked as a longer work in the future. The show is like a journey through our collective creative output: traditional painting, wood masks co-created with craftsmen in Sri Lanka that harken to centuries past as well as a short film utilizing AI. It's work for the ages, literally. The Unibrow's Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. Episode 164 was recorded in Los Angeles on May 2, 2025. Music by Aesop Rock for The Unibrow.
It was a rough week around here, and not just for the teens in Attack of the Eye Creatures.Host segments: Why do you need to stop on your way to eloping?; we keep disinformationing ourselves; putting smoochers to work again; Shyama-lazy; I was east bound and downed; bless the Chets; superior Saucer Men; we spend an inordinate amount of time reminding MiMi who Rip Taylor is; Joe is an Eddie Murphy film curator; what if everyone is a sex pest?; the Joe Don Continuum.

Marni welcomes Shyama Mathews to The Life Check Yourself where the duo discusses what it means to go through menopause and how to handle the changes your body is experiencing. Shyama is a gynecologist who is trained in minimal invasive gynecology surgery as well as a certified menopause specialist. She has helped women navigate their families and careers while enhancing their quality of life. In tackling the topic of menopause, Marni and Shyama agree that it isn't something that is discussed enough, and it's important to bear in mind that different women experience it differently. The transition, which has both mental and physical symptoms, is a subject that needs to gain more traction as it affects all women at some point. Menopause isn't the big bad wolf Not everyone experiences it in the same way How to seek the right information on menopause Does Our Fear Stem From Misinformation [09:36] Menopause isn't a topic typically discussed in the media. The information surrounding menopause and what women should expect isn't as readily available as other topics. While there are a number of resources, you need to actively search for them as they won't necessarily how up on your feed. While the average age for menopause is around 50. However, the symptoms for menopause can start manifesting themselves 5 to 7 years before that. It isn't actually an irrelevant topic for young women because I do think everyone should sort of know what's coming down the road. Don't DIY it [13:00] It's important to find the proper channels and experts to guide you through it when you start experiencing symptoms that you're not familiar with. When you're in an age bracket where it is likely to be menopause, do your research and find an expert to help you navigate it and dissect whether the symptoms are a byproduct of menopause or something else. Go for a consultation just like you would treat any other illness or problem. Go to a specialist for a special problem. Know Your Options [22:28] Educating yourself on your body is important, especially as a woman. It could save you a lot of otherwise unnecessary trouble. As women, we need to be aware of our options and that comes through education. We have old information. We're doing a huge disservice. WE DID IT!!! We made a short...er episode. Don't even remember what it was about, we were too overjoyed at how.. not long it was. Guessing from that title, something about yet another terrible M. We're in a new era of Shyama-lama-rama where we're surveying nearly the entirety of the director's catalog, including revisiting some films we've previously discussed. This week, we not only wrap up our journey through SERVANT Season 1 (including a patron segment focusing on the last four episodes specifically), but we also take another look at THE VILLAGE, this time accompanied by our Horror Enneagrammarian, Asia Swartzentruber. We drill down on differing interpretations of the theme of the film, including why it remains one of Shyamalan's most compelling (if divisive) entries. We hope you enjoy this new "Redux" discussion of one of our favorite M. Their mission is to end fear and stigma and allow others to find their optimal level of sexual wellness. Host, Mariah, wants to save others from being 'salty' about their lack of sex education. ABOUT THE TEAM: Mariah (she/her) grew up in a strict religious home and the sex education she got was abstinence-only sex education in school. She was raised Mormon, where sex is not openly talked about and heavily shrouded in shame and feelings of “unworthiness”. Mariah is a Certified Health Education Specialist and a Nationally Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach with a graduate degree in Health Education. She is taking her educational background and personal experience to share positive, empowering, and entertaining messages around sex, sexuality, relationships, and all things sex-related. Her mission is to minimize the fear and stigma around those things and create more awareness and understanding for others to reach their optimal sexual wellness. Mariah is bisexual and has been happily married to her husband for 12 years. The two of them are raising 3 wonderful kids with their sweet dog, Daisy. Mariah currently works full-time as an educator for an online university, adjuncts for another local university, and runs her coaching business, Balance Your Wellness. Brady (he/ him) was born and raised in Utah and with the combination of a nurse for a mom and the prevalence of love lines on late-night radio, he realized early on that the sex education he was getting didn't tell the whole story. With a brief background in radio and a passion for projects, he joined Salty Sex Cast shortly after it started, which bloomed into the creation of Murdershack Studios (murdershackstudios@gmail.com) while Brady loves to joke he is really passionate about learning more and more and growing his understanding toward his fellow human beings. Today I have on a very special guest today, Dr. Mathews! Dr. Mathews is a board certified OBGYN, minimally invasive gynecology surgeon, and NAMS certified menopause specialist. As a mother and a wife herself, her goal is to help women of all ages to maintain their own quality of life while keeping up with the day to day needs of their families and careers. Her practice emphasizes the importance of patient education and empowerment to make the best possible decisions for themselves and their bodies. It's about creating a relationship where women feel open to talk about it without being judged about it. There's just an idea that that's just what happens when you get older and there's nothing we can do about it. But there's a lot we can do about it, menopause doesn't have to be a death sentence, we can still have a very robust life in all different ways, in health, sexual health and everything.Would she say that libido is more of a physical or mental problem typically for women? It's everything. It's way more complicated than people realize. Especially for women the amount of things that need to come together to even get to the point of arousal, there are just so many aspects at play. What are changes that women might see before menopause?Menopause by definition is one whole year of not having a period during a natural unhindered cycle.Perimenopause is the time leading up to it and that can start 5-7 years before actual menopause. Those years that can be filled with the symptoms that are typically known as menopausal symptoms without much or any disruption to your cycle. Some of those symptoms are night sweats, hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, mood swings, irritability, depression and anxiety, weight gain. You might also experience vaginal dryness, less elasticity, more frequent vaginal infections or UTIs. What would she recommend for someone who is experiencing dryness? You want a good quality lubricant. The considerations you'd take for something you're going to put on your face, you need to do the same for your vagina. You want something that isn't going to disrupt the microbiome's natural balance of things. What tips would she give for someone looking to maintain a healthy sex life? Sometimes it's a hormonal change and she starts local vaginal estrogen therapy. That's one of the more common issues and you can correct that on a very basic level. Self exploration! No one knows your body better than yourself. If anyone is going to figure out what's going to help you get aroused or stimulate your anatomy, what you need to have on your mind, or what you need to watch, hear, or read to inspire those thoughts, that's you! You can't expect a partner to read your mind to that level. In celebration of the release of "Old," the boys go deep, deep into the M. Night Shyamalan archives for a conversation (re: argument) about the director's best movies, what makes him so enigmatic, what makes him so bewildering and just what the hell was wrong with that beach! Plus, a discussion about whether Mark Wahlberg is the best actor of all-time, why Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for "The Sixth Sense" (sorry, Angie!) and who should join the Shyamalan universe next. Buckle up...it's a twisty ride!
Stay tuned for weekly classes!
