Energy and the Ascent of Finance in Cold War Europe, 1964–1971 (Cambridge University Press, 2023), Oscar Sanchez-Sibony reveals the origins of our current era in the dissolution of the institutions that governed the architecture of energy and finance during the Bretton Woods era. He shows how, in the second half of the 1960s, the Soviet Union sought to dismantle the compartmentalized nature of Bretton Woods in order to escape its material ostracism and pave a path to global finance and exchange that the United States had vetoed during the 1950s and 1960s. Through the construction of a set of pipelines that helped Europe's energy regime change from coal to oil and gas, the Soviet Union succeeded in developing market relations and a relationship with Western capital as durable as the pipelines themselves. He shows how a history of the development of capitalism needs to integrate the socialist world in bringing about the new form of capitalism that regiments our lives today.

Olivier Sibony est professeur de stratégie à HEC, auteur de nombreux ouvrages et dernièrement de “Noise” (sortie en français cette semaine) qu'il a co-écrit avec le prix Nobel d'économie Daniel Kahneman, psychologue et Cass Rustein, sans doute l'un des juristes les plus connus des Etats-Unis. Il fallait bien ces 3 personnes, ces 3 disciplines pour couvrir un sujet aussi complexe que celui de la prise de décisions car nous sommes toutes la journée confrontés à prendre des décisions ou à l'inverse soumis à la décision d'autrui. Nous avons tous en tête les biais cognitifs bien sur, même si nous les conscientisons pas vraiment. Mais avez vous déjà réfléchi à l'impact du bruit dans vos décisions et celles des autres? Le bruit, c'est un élément qui peut être intérieur ou extérieur mais qui est souvent accidentel et qui impacte, de manière beaucoup plus importante qu'on ne pourrait le penser, les décisions. Comme l'indique le synopsis du livre, imaginez par exemple 2 médecins dans une même ville qui donne des diagnostics différents à des patients identiques. Bien sur, des biais peuvent être en jeux mais aussi une équipe de foot qui perd, une chaleur inhabituelle, une faim qui tiraille le ventre…tous ces éléments ont des impacts importants et sont des variables dans des jugements qui devraient être similaires. Mais alors qu'elle place pour l'intuition? Est-ce vrai pour tous les types de décisions? Heureusement, il existe des manières d'éviter ces biais et ce bruit et Olivier nous raconte comment nous nous trompons mais aussi comment prendre de meilleures décisions.

Much of the appeal of McDonald's comes from the chain's consistency. A cheeseburger in the US or a McSpicy Chicken in India should taste the same every time. But what if a business had wildly different outcomes depending on which leader was making decisions? Renowned psychologist Daniel Kahneman calls this variability “noise,” and suggests controlling it is key to ensuring the best decisions get made. In this week's episode, Stephanie interviews Kahneman, a best-selling author and professor emeritus at Princeton University, and Olivier Sibony, a professor of strategy at HEC Paris, about their new book, “Noise: A Flaw in Human Judgment.” (Their co-author is US legal scholar Cass Sunstein of Harvard Law School.) Kahneman and Sibony argue businesses often wrongly assume their decisionmakers will make similar judgments given similar circumstances. Kahneman relates an experiment he conducted with an insurance firm and dozens of its underwriters. It's fair to predict underwriters would reach similar conclusions about a case's risk and put a similar dollar value on it, right? Wrong. Kahneman found judgments often varied by 50%, or five times the divergence one would reasonably expect. Silencing that noise often means adopting good decision “hygiene,” the authors said. Many job interviews start with employers having an initial impression and spending the rest of the interview justifying it. Instead, companies should use structured interviews with standard questions that might help disprove false impressions, Kahneman said. And while many firms use artificial intelligence to weed out job candidates, they're likely doing themselves a disservice, Sibony said. Too often, the algorithms themselves are faulty, he said. “My worry is that companies are using this mostly to save time and money, not to actually improve the quality of their decisions,” Sibony said. But it's actually quite easy to do a test of noise, what we call a noise audit. Which means to give the same case to a number of different judges, a number of different people, and to check how different their judgements are. Olivier Sibony est professeur de stratégie à HEC, auteur de nombreux ouvrages et dernièrement de "Noise" (sortie en français cette semaine) qu'il a co-écrit avec le prix Nobel d'économie Daniel Kahneman, psychologue et Cass Rustein, sans doute l'un des juristes les plus connus des Etats-Unis. Il fallait bien ces 3 personnes, ces 3 disciplines pour couvrir un sujet aussi complexe que celui de la prise de décisions car nous sommes toutes la journée confrontés à prendre des décisions ou à l'inverse soumis à la décision d'autrui. Nous avons tous en tête les biais cognitifs bien sur, même si nous les conscientisons pas vraiment. Mais avez vous déjà réfléchi à l'impact du bruit dans vos décisions et celles des autres? Le bruit, c'est un élément qui peut être intérieur ou extérieur mais qui est souvent accidentel et qui impacte, de manière beaucoup plus importante qu'on ne pourrait le penser, les décisions. Comme l'indique le synopsis du livre, imaginez par exemple 2 médecins dans une même ville qui donne des diagnostics différents à des patients identiques. Bien sur, des biais peuvent être en jeux mais aussi une équipe de foot qui perd, une chaleur inhabituelle, une faim qui tiraille le ventre...tous ces éléments ont des impacts importants et sont des variables dans des jugements qui devraient être similaires. Mais alors qu'elle place pour l'intuition? Est-ce vrai pour tous les types de décisions? Heureusement, il existe des manières d'éviter ces biais et ce bruit et Olivier nous raconte comment nous nous trompons mais aussi comment prendre de meilleures décisions.
