Hello and welcome, to season 3 episode 82 of the Berean Manifesto faith hope and love for the modern Christian I'm Pastor Newms. If you notice, I am not joined by Pastor Bill. He is currently on sabbatical taking a break. That is much needed because he has been doing this straight through for a long time now so I sadly for the next couple of few weeks you have to put up with me, haha, anyway so getting right into it it's gonna be a little different than normal mainly because well there's not two voices and as well as, there is since there's not two voices it might be a little shorter also the normal so we'll see how that goes. And we will go from there so, normally we start off talking about my week are weeks my week was pretty good nothing eventful really my girls and, my wife, Zadiee are all out of town visiting my mother in law in Phoenix which is their grandparents and so they're out there having fun. Very funny Phoenix said it's she's leaving since it's just me but then she said she was just kidding so that's okay so sadly in the house currently, oddly not sadly oddly it is just me and Phoenix,  she's upstairs I'm downstairs and it is eerily quiet in this house with no children or Zadiee there's usually background noise from TVs or music, from Zaidee's you know kitchen area you know bedroom kitchen living room when she's doing stuff the girls are always making noise because you know children. And none of that is going on so this house is just, quiet and the animals don't like it that the girls aren't home, and so Kaiju are lovely 50 something pound puppy, not a puppy anymore but still. Is barking at a lot of things that she normally wouldn't because there's usually noise and she doesn't necessarily always hear everything else but in this case she is so.  There's a lot of that kind of Oddity going on right now. So yeah the week has been quite interesting. To say the least. And that's the wrong button.  And so it has been a little weird everything going on definitely but, It's been good I've been able to get, a lot of stuff done been able to catch up on some shows and such didn't do a lot of streaming. I'm we did give away last weekend was pride and we did not have a Podcast that week for that reason we were all extremely fatigued and tired after that it was a interesting day very good lots of good conversations we met a lot of people it was thoroughly enjoyable hopefully we might see some of those people start to join us on some of our events but we'll see but it was overall really good it was a lot of fun and so, during that event we had a giveaway for a monitor anyone who over the course of that weekend followed, my twitch. was putting a drawing we did that drawing yesterday and reached out to the winner and heard back from them but are waiting to get all the information we need back and forth so that way we can get that to them, but that's good and so that was you know the week the two weeks I have been very busy since our last update so it's pretty much how my weeks gone. So now comes the time of the night that I hate but I'm going to keep doing it because if I don't, I'll never do it again and so I'm going to do it anyway which is, getting to know the pastor's and we have these nice little cards that we have I'll be pulling the card this week because well.  I'll be pulling the cart this week. This question is disgusting but let's read it okay if you could stand at the Pinnacle of any natural object or man-made structure what would it be, so mmm so if I could stand anywhere. At the Pinnacle of an object safely so I have inner ear things and I don't do well with Heights I'm terrified of heights, so if I was going to stand on the Pinnacle of anything that has been built it would need to be built very small like you know an ant hill, some rocks that have a good, distance away from I like being on the top of mountains and looking out, but not down so that's really a hard question for me because I'm terrified of heights when you go to mountains I've been a couple places in Colorado. And things like that you know everyone wants to get up to the edge and hold on to the railing if there is one and look over and they're like ooh now that's not happening I don't I don't do that I don't like, the distance and the thought of because immediately my brain goes you're going to fall.  So I don't like I don't dig that I don't like it so that's my answer to that question I don't know if anyone in chat would like to jump in with their answer of what is the, thing the Pinnacle they would like to stand on and look around. But no one is saying anything so I don't think anyone wants to. Chime in normally there's more some of these questions are good and some of them are bad so that's okay, do do do give everyone a moment to Phoenix couldn't hear the question okay if you could stand on the Pinnacle of any man-made or natural. Monument thing where would it be peanut Cola pinochle. The Pinnacle of what sir you just said Pinnacle like that the point like like the very top like the top of the Eiffel Tower or the top of the Mount Everest and look out the top of the pyramid you know that the very top the Pinnacle of an object. And I know I know Biggs is like me he doesn't like heights so it's going to have to be a short like molehill. London Bridge now would you actually go to the very top of London Bridge on those little things and stand there and look out, or do you mean you would just like to be on London Bridge and look out because because I can't see you being at the very top and looking anywhere because you're afraid of heights too I know you is Big Big Bend with the doctor okay that would be say fish, not quite the question but okay and the what's his face oh that that's nice. The what's-his-face, you talk about Captain Jack are you talking about are you talking about Phoenix that you're calling what's-his-face one of the male companions. That's that's a little confusing that you just want to be on the top with what's-his-face yes I asked you several things and you answered yes I'm going to assume you mean Captain Jack which is very interesting for you to be wanting to hang out with Captain Jack because that man is a very interesting soul and doesn't really fit your aesthetic much but he's fun he's a fun guy he is funny he is very funny.  All right so I'm going to say we're warmed up. But we're not talking about Captain Jack we're talking about an object that we're standing on I don't disagree that hanging out with Captain Jack would be cool welcome groggy, but yes that's not quite what the question is that's you know. But that's okay, that's perfectly fine all right I don't even know if you were here for the question groggy or if you were just lurking over there but that's cool, and I just noticed so this is this is funny I'm a little dyslexic and Biggs is as well and I just noticed he did not type London Bridge he typed lunged London Bride. Which I read London Bridge and set it to all of you but I just realized Biggs wants to stand on top of the London bride which I'm not sure where that is but that would be cool. Phoenix's somewhere she can see monkeys and I would agree Phoenix likes monkeys so do I she built me this with Lego which is she gave me a monkey and she was like here's a monkey and I was like he needs a throne and so she, built me a throne for the monkey and I do like it it sits on my desk sits on my work desk which is of course right. Next to my personal desk anyway all right so we are warmed up nicely so the topic for tonight what I titled it was “What about a fish?” and the reason I titled it what about a fish is because we're going to be talking a lot, about Jonah and the thing about Jonah is the thing we all you always here touched on is Jonah got swallowed by a fish because he didn't believe he didn't obey and because he got swallowed and then he got spit out, you know we always hear about that little fish part most times we don't hear about the Deep why didn't he follow what was it about it, and how did it end after, fish because you know and then he obeyed is what we're always kind of taught his children and taught as in a lot of sermons and that's that kind of stuff and so kind of what I wanted to talk about was you no Second Chances what we have what we get and you know dive into Jonah some because Jonah such an interesting figure and in the story has actually very little to do with the fish. But, that's what we focus on a lot is Jonah and the big fish as opposed to just Jonah so we're going to start with I know this is going to be shocking, we're going to start with Jonah 1 1 through 4 I know starting at the beginning of a story is crazy but that's what we're going to do the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of. A middle get up go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it because they're evil has come up before me, Jonah got up and fled to. Tarshish from the Lord's presence so he just he just took off running the opposite not necessarily opposite but another Direction he went down to Joppa found a ship. Pay the fare and went into it to go with them to tarshish from the Lord's presence but the Lord through a great wind onto the sea a great storm arose and the Sea and the ship threatened to break apart, so this part we know you know Jonah. God tells you to do something Jonah's like piece and takes off running gets on a boat then gets caught. We're going to skip down to.   You know I'm going to summarize the rest of this chapter basically the men are like, okay Joan has a man of God let's ask him to pray to God to figure out what who's causing this Jonah's like and no because he was asleep they cast lots figured out it was Jonah, then they picked him up and threw him into the ocean. And because they were then scared they then offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows the Lord then, I grabbed the grab Jonah, grab the fish fish ate Jonah which probably wasn't a whale you know you always get those it's a whale whales are mammals not fish as well as the way the mouth structure is it had to be some kind of fish probably but that's beside the point It was a big fish like creature. Interestingly. Fish in this Hebrew word really means something that is squirming that is moved by Valve it. Ray Tori action of the tail so anything that is moving forward because of a, tail so it could have been you know they just classified fish kept it simple and he stayed there for three days three nights so. You know this is the part of the story most people know pretty out right you know we have Jonah gets swallowed. Any stuck there so then we go to Jonah 2 1 through 9 Jonah prayed to the, Lord his God from the belly of the fish I called to the Lord in my distress and he answered me I cried out for help from inside she'll you heard my voice you threw me into the depths Into the Heart of the Seas and the current overcame me, all of your Breakers and your Billows swept over me but I said I have been banished from your sight yet I will look once more toward your Holy Temple the water engulfed me up to the neck the depth overcame me the seaweed was wrapped around my head. I think to the foundations of the mountains and the Earth's Gates shut behind me then you raised my life from the pit Lord my God, as my life was fading away I remembered the Lord my prayer came to you to your Holy Temple those who cherish the worthless idols and abandoned their faithful love. But as for me I will sacrifice to you with a voice of Thanksgiving I will fulfill what I have vowed salvation Belongs to the Lord and then verse 10 the Lord commanded the fish and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. So you know. He gets stuck he stuck inside this fish and he starts being very repentant you know. You know I was about to die I was at the gates of sheol I'm sorry. You know I was watching seaweed you know all the things and thanking God for not letting him die in that situation and then you know. I'll do whatever you say I'll listen to your Commandments I'll do what I swear and then gets spit up on to the dry land. So and the other funny thing yeah I know the watching seaweed you know the seaweed was wrapping around my head I'm like. That's that's intense like that's some that's some that's some deepness right there I agree Phoenix and so. Then we're going to move on to Jonah 3 1 through 4 specifically but then we're going to touch a little more. The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time get up go to the city of Nineveh and preach the message that I tell you so Jonah got up went to Nineveh according to the Lord's commandment Nineveh was an extremely Great City a three-day walk this is another thing that I love is that. Count it and just spit him up like super close either it was like you still got to walk aways because you didn't walk away as the first time. So then Jonah set out on the first day of his walk and proclaimed in 40 days Nineveh will be demolished and then we're going to continue on I'm going to summarize past this point, so when he gets to Nineveh. The people in the never became repentant tore their clothes sack sack cloth Don sack cloth through a great feast and then I mean declared a fast not through a feast opposite of what I said. When the word reached the king he did the same thing everyone animals and people were covered with sackcloth and they all called out and he commanded they turn away.Which then God saw their actions that they had turned from their evil ways and he relented from the disaster that he had threatened him with and he did not do it so, he saves him now this is the part of the story again we all pretty much know you know. God gave Jonah a really good second chance and Jonah took it. Now part of Jonah's story though that gets left out a lot is what happens in Jonah for. Now. And Jonah for we start to find out some more of the details so if we look. For one Jonah was greatly displeased and became Furious and you're like wait. They repented and became good people like why would he be furious and then in verse 2 he says he prayed to the Lord please Lord, isn't this what I thought while I was still in my own country that's why I Fred fled toward Tarsus in the first place I knew you were gracious and compassionate slow to anger abounding in love one who relents from sending disaster and now Lord take my life for it is better for me to die than to live. And the Lord's asks is it right for you to be angry so, here's where we find out truly what was going on with Jonah and what his motivation was so it's not that Jonah just didn't want to do what the Lord said, mow I got the Lord came down it was like Jonah go do this and he's like I don't feel like it I'd rather go eat some pizza rolls. I just had pizza rolls for dinner by the way so you know shout out to pizza rolls. But that's not the reason the reason why Jonah was so, didn't want to go if he didn't like the people of Nineveh because the people of Nineveh were not good people they sacrificed to Idols they worshipped a fish God which is really funny that they worshipped a fish God and he got swallowed by a fish but you know the aspect of Jonah getting sorry derailed trapped with pizza rolls but they are amazing, the people of Nineveh were just bad they killed other people they like it big said they were going to war constantly you know they didn't, they weren't happy with the Jewish people so. The whole reason Jonah didn't want to go was not because he just didn't want to do what God asked it was the exact opposite he knew in doing what God asks they would repent and if they repented. They would be saved and he wanted them to be dead so you know it's this whole thing of, it's a step farther than just I don't feel like it he wanted them to die he didn't like them and so going there he knew, would bring about. And so that's the whole reason why and then. Jonah become suicidal he's like just kill me I'm done this is exactly why I didn't want this I knew this is what would happen and now you've done what I knew you would do, and you're not going to kill them all even though you said you were going to because you're good God I love how he throws that in there like you're a good God here's all the reasons why you're a good God you're compassionate slow to anger abounding in love one who relents from sending disaster, but I'm upset about it and sometimes I definitely feel Jonah in that it's like. I don't want this person to succeed because they're mean and they're nasty in there whatever and it's like then they succeed in your like T I know I didn't want this yeah but. We have to do, what our roles are Jonah's role was to be a preacher to be someone who would spread the gospel and do such things so even though we don't want to we have to do what God's called us to do which, is ironic me saying this because I have over the years fought very hard against, the Lord to do certain things in life because I didn't want to take things on. And so him giving me you know it's like about Jonah tonight is very humorous as the first night that I'm leading the brand Manifesto that I know of I think I might have done it once because of technical issues and once because Bill was sick but this is truly like you know. And so I find it humorous that this is what God tells me to talk about I just now fully realize the humor of that but that's beside the point the the aspect of going over it though and seeing Jonas, Jonah gets upset when God does what Jonah knew God was going to do to the point then that he goes to another city sits down and is like okay I'm here to die God sends a plant Grows over him and he's like okay cool then God kills the plant using a worm the next day. And Jonah gets even matter like okay it's just time to die I'm angry enough to die and. One of the things the Lord says then, in verse 11 is sorry starting in verse 10 so the Lord said you cared about a plant which you did not labor over and did not grow it appeared in a night and perished in a night, but may I not care about the great city of Nineveh which has more than 120,000 people who cannot distinguish between their right and their left as well as many animals. So you know God basically looks at Jonah and his like okay you got mad about a plant you got mad about your feelings am I not supposed to care about these people and. You know so.  We're as God gave Jonah that second chance Jonah then backed off from it even and you know that's where the story ends for Jonah. As far as the book you know his story ends with God basically being like are you kidding me dude you need to you need to check yourself you've got a serious attitude problem. And and that's something that I definitely. I think that we all need to think about is you know God gives Second Chances God does forgive God does but there are consequences, for our actions there are things that happen because of decisions we've made and just because we do the right thing if we have a bad attitude about it, God still is gonna check you for it like why are you. You know why are you having a bad attitude doing the thing I asked you to do you know so often we're like fine I'll do it. How are fine I'll talk to that person or fine I'll I'll give the money you've told me to give you know etc etc etc when we're not doing it for the right reason. And the Lord knows that and that's where the conviction comes from a lot of times is. Our attitudes as well once we do obey is you know what is our attitude are we truly doing it for the right reason or are we doing it because we're supposed to. And so that's kind of what I kind of wanted to touch on and then I wanted to touch on. 1st John 2:1. My little children I'm writing you these things that you may not sin but if anyone does sin we have an advocate with the father. Jesus Christ the righteous one he himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins and not only for ourselves but for of for those of the whole world this is how we know that we know him. If we keep his Commandments. This is that whole aspect of you know just because we are. In Christ and doing the right things doesn't necessarily mean, we're doing it for the right reasons all the time we should be the fruit of our spirit is how people should know you know keeping the commands as important as it says here. But it's it's important why and how we do it. and then I wanted to look at Romans 6 1 and 2 because often you hear people talk about Grace, so often we hear Grace Grace Grace Grace and Grace is extremely important without Grace none of us. Should continue existing and we're going to backup actually 25. And you know I'm going to kind of summarize this is. Sorry this is Paul talking to the Romans it's going through. That the law came according to multiply the trespasses but when Sining applied Grace multiplied even more so just as Sin reigned in death so also Grace will reign through righteousness resulting in eternal life,  so then we look at six and it says what should we then what should we say then, we continue in sin so that Grace May multiply absolutely not how can we who died to sin still live in it are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death therefore we were buried by with him by baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the father so we too may walk in newness of life, and what's important there is the sacrifice you know. When we go on then to verse 6 for we know our old self was crucified with him so our body ruled by sand might not render powerless so we are May no longer be enslaved since a person who has died is freed from sin so we have this whole aspect of sin in this part of the story. Where you know Jonah does what he does gets upset. Continues to be upset afterwards God knows his heart knows why he's truly upset even before Jonah tells him. And in that we know then in the New Testament when we start looking at. Grace and second chances in such in the New Testament part of that aspect is that newness that we've been born into. You know when. Jesus died he died to cover all sin not just the sin before him not just a specific person the sin for the whole world he died for all of it and so when we. Are raised with him that allows us to be freed from sin you know some so often we look it's in so many cultures look at sin as you know this set of rules that, if you break any of them you're going straight to hell and.  God gave Second Chances in the Old Testament and he continues to give Grace in the new, of Jesus sacrifice in the old it was because Jesus sacrifice was coming and so we had the type, the the foreshadowing through the killing of the sheep and the Lambs and you know excetera Etc doves depending on everything. And now we have just grace through belief through you know all of that aspect but we are. Those who are died are freed from sin because sin was a bondage put on us it was something that's that's in us it's something that, continues to haunt all of us and so we have to remember that we've died to sin and we live in Christ so we continue to try to be more christ-like in following the ways of Christ not just following, the set of rules that we have that we've been freed from in giving been giving that second chance.   So that's really all I had for tonight. If anyone has any questions or anyone has any statements since I'm the only Voice tonight, I would love to hear from people and then be able to speak to it but if not I'll give everyone a few minutes. To tell if someone out there is typing in Internet land while I get a drink yes.
