In this special episode, which is brought to you in partnership with the Centre for Social Justice, we'll be shining a light on the crisis of modern slavery, and in particular the increasing prevalence of Cuckooing – a terrible new trend that you might have seen featured in the TV show Happy Valley. Cuckooing is a deeply damaging and frankly cruel practice used by criminals to take over someone's home, someone's life, as a base or as a cover for their own illegal activities.Led by the former Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith, one of my guests today, the CSJ's vision is for those living in the poorest and most disadvantaged communities across Britain to be given every opportunity to flourish and reach their full potential. The CSJ, which Iain founded 20 years ago, was one of the first to call for greater action around modern slavery and is now focussing its efforts on Cuckooing. Also joining us is Louise Gleich, a senior researcher at the CSJ whose brilliant work is centred around the Modern Slavery agenda. And finally we'll also be joined by Declan, a former police detective turned Victim Navigator for Justice and Care. Declan is operating day in, day out on the Modern Slavery frontline. This may feel like a crisis that is very unlikely to touch your life, but the reality is that it's very likely to be happening right now, in a property not that far from you.Declan works closely with Modern Slavery victims, as such we won't be revealing his surname or his full identity. How do you heal and get through a break up? Annie Lord is Vogue's dating columnist. She joins Emma Barnett to talk about her debut book, Notes on Heartbreak. A candid exploration of the best and worst of love, she talks about nursing a broken heart and her own attempts to move on in the current dating climate; from disastrous rebound sex to sending ill-advised nudes, stalking your ex's new girlfriend and the sharp indignity of being ghosted. The overturning by the US Supreme Court of the landmark Roe v Wade ruling has prompted many of you to get in touch to share your reactions and experiences. One listener, Nicola, wanted to tell us about her mum - who died after having a legal termination that should have been safe, in 1968. Closer to home there's been a high-level summit about buffer zones at abortion clinics. Emma speaks to Scotland's Green MSP, Gillian Mackay, who has drawn up a members bill which aims to introduce protest-free buffer zones around clinics. And what does the law in the UK say about a woman's right to an abortion? We hear from Professor Fiona De Londras, the Chair of Global Legal Studies at Birmingham Law School. The senior backbench Conservative MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith and some of his fellow MPs were given the opportunity this week to find out first hand exactly how uncomfortable a menopausal hot flush can be, especially when you're in the workplace. As part of an event raising awareness around the country's shortage of HRT, Sir Iain and some his colleagues from both sides of the House of Commons, tried out a so-called MenoVest, a special piece of clothing fitted with heat pads, to simulate the extreme discomfort which many menopausal women have to live with. Emma speaks to Sir Iain Duncan Smith and Lesley Salem, who had the idea to create the vest. The Fellowship is a play which looks at the children of the Windrush generation and the relationship between Marcia and Dawn, two black sisters struggling to take care of their dying mother whilst juggling their turbulent personal lives. Emma speaks to Director Paulette Randall and actor Suzette Llewellyn, who plays Marcia.

Veterans In Politics- Season 4, Episode 2 with  Sir Iain Duncan Smith MPFew politicians are known simply by their initials.  IDS is one of the few 'big beasts' of politics remaining in Parliament.  Something our host Jonny quizzes him on.  It was a huge honour sitting down with Iain, a former Leader of the Opposition and of the Conservative Party.  He's also known for his work on welfare reform, something he is clearly passionate about.  We finish up the episode on this very topic, and he explains how he has worked cross-Party to deliver the work of the Centre for Social Justice.Of course, Iain is a veteran in politics, having served as a Captain in the Scots Guards.  The military runs deep in his family, with his late father a fighter ace of World War Two, decorated on more than one occasion for bravery.  Iain generously offers insight into the conversations he had with him about bravery, conversations he had before deploying on operations himself.  It really is a privilege to be able to listen to this.About Iain:Sir Iain Duncan Smith was educated at Dunchurch College of Management, the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia and HMS Conway in Anglesey. As part of the Scots Guards, Iain saw active service in Northern Ireland and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and served in Canada and Germany. Iain later worked for GEC-Marconi, a defence company, and Bellwinch, a property company. He has also been on the board of Jane's Information Group, a publishing company. Iain married Betsy in 1982 and they have four children – Harry, Edward, Rosie and Alicia.Iain was elected Member of Parliament for Chingford in 1992, and he was re-elected in 1997 as Member of Parliament for the re-drawn constituency of Chingford and Woodford Green. Iain was promoted to William Hague's Shadow Cabinet in 1997. As Shadow Secretary of State for Social Security, Iain exposed Labour's hypocrisy and failure on welfare reform. When he was promoted to Shadow Defence Secretary, he exposed the Government's failure to give British forces sufficient funding and equipment. In 2001, Iain was elected Leader of the Conservative Party. After stepping down in 2003, he set up the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), an independent think tank committed to tackling poverty and social breakdown. Iain worked tirelessly as Chairman of the CSJ until the 2010 General Election, when he was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. He served in this position until March 2016. Iain remains the Member of Parliament for Chingford and Woodford Green and is always happy to deal with constituents and their concerns.NOTE- Please rate us on Apple Podcasts, donate or become our mate on our website HERE:  Donate - CampaignForce

A Dog's Life with Anna Webb

This week Anna is joined by Beverley Cuddy who amongst other dog-centric roles, is one of the Patrons of SAMPA - the Stolen and Missing Pets Alliance. They chat about the great news that government are introducing new legislation - the Pet Abduction Law to make penalties for dog theft in line with the crime. With specific legislation that recognises that dogs are clearly not ‘property' or chattel with consequences of up to seven years in prison for ‘abducting' a dog. The hope is that dog theft will decrease. A long time coming, this law has been campaigned for years, not least by Debbie Matthews, and Vets get Scanning. For years criminals have optimised a loophole in the Theft Act 1968 where dogs have been previously classified along with laptops and lawnmowers! The surge in dog theft through the pandemic when the demand for dogs outstripped their supply, made national headlines and brought the attention to the pain and suffering and complete devastation that stealing someone's dog has on families. Government's change to classify dogs separately and not as part of the Theft Act 1968, which clearly has left families vulnerable to nasty criminals, has been spear-headed by Sir Iain Duncan-Smith. Having championed #PetTheftReform, he has helped bring massive change  in only a few months. And a major move under their new Animal Action Plan which aims to make Britain a leader in animal welfare globally. The term ‘abduction' implies another aspect of their ‘plan' to classify animals as sentient beings, which is significant and in line with modern socio-economic trends where dogs are now firmly considered as family members and not as property under the Theft Act 1968. We are living with dogs in such different ways now, and dog ownership has soared compared to back in the day as we seek dogs constant companionship, their skills as de-stressors, and their gateway to the outdoors.Discussing the positive changes Government have initiated, we also discuss why the legislation around Breed Specific Legislation isn't as positive, where sadly only two MP's attended a debate in parliament on its possible change  much to the disappointment  of the dog community. In Beverley's long standing position as Editor of Dogs Today Magazine and founder of Tailwise we also talk about why Beverley has launched a new Awards called the Bark Marks. Recognising successes  in the dog world from best TV Vet to best Politician,  how chuffed were we to get the scoop  that A DOG'S LIFE has been nominated for ‘Best Dog Podcast', which made our day! Chatting  about the recent amazing success of Operation Ark to evacuate NOWZAD's animals and team, headed Pen Farthing, out of Afghanistan. On today's episode we look at the global campaign to strip Beijing of the Winter Olympics asking: Should a country have the privilege to host the Olympic Games if the government of that country is doing something harmful to its citizens?   Hosting the Olympics is a privilege and often a very positive PR moment for the host nation, however a group of human rights activists have delivered a joint letter to the International Olympic Committee calling for Beijing to be stripped of the Games over its crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong and the detention of Uighurs, a Muslim minority. Should China be stripped of the games? Or is it too late given they were awarded back in 2015?   To answer this question we're joined by Sir Iain Duncan Smith (former leader of the British Conservative Party and founder of the The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance On China), Craig Foster (former Socceroos coach turned human rights activist), Dr Steve Georgakis (Senior Lecturer of pedagogy and sports studies, University of Sydney) and Federal MP Dave Sharma.   In today's news headlines: Victorian Premier to front hotel quarantine inquiry WA's notorious Claremont serial killer found guilty New plan to slash home loan approval times   Follow The Briefing Instagram: @thebriefingpodcast  Facebook: TheBriefingNewsAU Twitter: @TheBriefingAU  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
