Do you know someone who's struggling with depression, social anxiety or feelings of hopelessness? Sadly, it's a growing problem for many people; especially teens. It doesn't have to be that way! There is an answer! You are not alone. With God's help, I've faced some of these same issues and overcame them. Depression and anxiety do not have to ruin your life or the lives of those you care for! Yes, I'm back to doing audio podcasts. This is to let you know that you're listening to a recent video podcast that I just posted to YouTube. I did my best to keep it non-visual. Since it is mentioned in the original video, here's the link to one of the articles that I referenced. https://www.mdpi.com/2227-9709/10/2/39#:~:text=A%202017%20study%20of%20social,14%E2%80%9324%20%5B22%5D If you would like some detailed info on depression, then you can go to this one. Drawing on Rabbi Kivelevitz's extensive pastoral mentoring experience and Prof. Juni's clinical and research findings, the discussants annotate how electronic media has insidiously been chipping away at the foundations of healthy interpersonal relationships and adaptive self-representations. These have especially as these have stymied healthy psychological development of adolescents. Initially, the telephone – and then radio entertainment and television -- fostered increased passivity. Then, as we went from email to instant messaging, the notions of downtime, leisurely conversations, curling up with a book, living-in-the-world, and even taking time to ponder were steadily banished to the realm of the boring. These have been replaced by ever-metastasizing short-term bucket-lists powered by FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) fueled by fictitious friendships and goals. Unrealistic ideals and norms aggressively usurped all aspects of personal values and social life. Presently, virtual reality is deteriorating the foundations of mental health -- especially among adolescents -- as relentless online schedules foster additive patterns, fatigue-based depression, and emotional exhaustion. Prof. Juni couches this tsunami in terms of Object Relations Theory which posits that meaningful interpersonal relationships entail a basic human need. The patterns described above have thus been tearing at the very essence of the human experience, and their psychiatric repercussions are of no surprise to Mental Health professionals. Kivelevitz extends the analysis to the specific acculturation of the Haredi world to this new reality, outlining the substantial changes manifest among both the leadership and the lay community. As for stemming the tide in general, and specific family reparative strategies, Dr. Juni insists that the horse has left the barn and envisions no reasonable corrective strategies. The discussants do, however, explore some options which may blunt its repercussions in terms of self-concept and family relationships. Prof. Juni is one of the foremost research psychologists in the world today. He has published ground-breaking original research in seventy different peer reviewed journals and is cited continuously with respect by colleagues and experts in the field who have built on his theories and observations. He studied in Yeshivas Chaim Berlin under Rav Yitzchack Hutner, and in Yeshiva University as a Talmid of Rav Joseph Dov Soloveitchick. Dr. Juni is a board member of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists and has regularly presented addresses to captivated audiences. Associated with NYU since 1979, Juni has served as Director of MA and PhD programs, all the while heading teams engaged in cutting-edge research. Professor Juni's scholarship on aberrant behavior across the cultural, ethnic, and religious spectrum is founded on psychometric methodology and based on a psychodynamic psychopathology perspective. He is arguably the preeminent expert in Differential Diagnostics, with each of his myriad studies entailing parallel efforts in theory construction and empirical data collection from normative and clinical populations. Professor Juni created and directed the NYU Graduate Program in Tel Aviv titled Cross-Cultural Group Dynamics in Stressful Environments. Based in Yerushalayim, he collaborates with Israeli academic and mental health specialists in the study of dissonant factors and tensions in the Arab-Israeli conflict and those within the Orthodox Jewish community, while exploring personality challenges of second-generation Holocaust survivors. Below is a partial list of the journals to which Professor Juni has contributed over 120 article (many are available online): Journal of Forensic Psychology; Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment, and Trauma; International Review of Victimology; The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease; International Forum of Psychoanalysis; Journal of Personality Assessment; Journal of Abnormal Psychology; Journal of Psychoanalytic Anthropology; Psychophysiology; Psychology and Human Development; Journal of Sex Research; Journal of Psychology and Judaism; Contemporary Family Therapy; American Journal on Addictions; Journal of Criminal Psychology; Mental Health, Religion, and Culture. As Rosh Beis Medrash, Rabbi Avraham Kivelevitz serves as Rav and Posek for the morning minyan at IDT. Hundreds of listeners around the globe look forward to his weekly Shiur in Tshuvos and Poskim. Rav Kivelevitz is a Maggid Shiur for Dirshu International in Talmud and Halacha as well as a Dayan with the Beth Din of America. Please leave us a review or email us at ravkiv@gmail.com

Quote referenced at the end of the show: "Slay that dragon once, and he will never have power over you again. Yeah, he’ll still be there. Yeah, you’ll still have to duel him every morning. And yeah, he’ll still fight just as hard and use just as many nasty tricks as he ever did. In Episode 81, Dr. Dan and Dr. Huber tackle a tough and essential teen parenting topic: the link between social media and depression. Dr. John Huber is the Chairman for Mainstream Mental Health, a non-profit organization that brings lasting and positive change to the lives of individuals that suffer from mental health issues. Dr. Huber has been a mental health professional for over twenty years (including working as a school psychologist) and has worked with children, families, teens, adults, and veterans. He is a Clinical Forensic Psychologist, and a practitioner with privileges at two long term acute care hospitals. Dr. Huber has appeared on over three hundred top tier radio shows (NBC Radio, CBS, Fox News Radio) and thirty national television programs (ABC, NBC, Spectrum News). In addition Dr. Huber is the host of “Mainstream Mental Health Radio” which is heard nationwide and features interviews with today’s top mental health professionals. Today’s episode is inspired by a recent study stating that "Social Media Use [is] Linked To Depression Among Teens" and that social media use plus screen time can lead to an increase in depression and anxiety among teens and adolescents. In the study, researchers measured how much time students spent in front of social media, television and computers. The data revealed the more time kids spent engrossed in digital screens, their symptoms of anxiety and depression became more severe. Dr. Dan talks to Dr. Huber about the study, depression among teens, teen behaviors, and how social media affects their mental health. They focus on questions and topics including: What are some things parents can look out for if they think their child is depressed? What anxiety looks like vs. depression in teens that are struggling? How are they related? How do you think that social media has changed the way people interact with each other and develop relationships with each other? Common red flags in teen behavior such as: isolation, decrease in eye contact, irritability, and more. How do you think the way that information flows in social media deviates from the way it did in previous traditional societies? And related: should you monitor your teen’s digital world? Should you limit a teen’s screen time? How can you let your teen self-regulate but also be involved? Many people are taught to be wary of mental health labels. Dr. Huber works to reduce the stigma of “mental health” treatment. His goal is to empower the young person to make positive changes in his/her life before a crisis evolves. In particular his work changes lives and helps our children break the stigma (and even shame) of mental health and seek treatment proving that we can all embrace each other and our differences as part of the human condition. The show ends with Dr. Huber’s great Parent Footprint moment about his own childhood. Watch this free video to learn more about Dr. Dan and Parent Footprint Awareness Training®.

I had the pleasure of meeting Aaron and Mel whilst in Toronto on my cross-Canada backpacking trip. Fast forward to 2018 and the pair of them are on tour to the East Coast from big ol Trawna. We set up this podcast over the past few months and conversation didn’t disappoint. We talked at length about their background as people and musicians. The ins and outs of the music industry. How social media plays into the business and the burdensome reality of modern day artists wearing all the hats so to speak. From Writing and honing your skill, to recording, producing, promotion, booking agent, PR, management, tour managing, performing, marketing, The modern artist does it all and funds it all. No easy task. The later half of the podcast dipped into broader and deeper subjects like how social media affects the kids of today, addiction counselling, depression and suicide, and pursuing ones dreams. It was really easy to talk to these two and I hope it is just as easy to listen. Don’t miss their Halifax Debut TONIGHT! @ Menz & Mollyz for some sick pop and hip hop from TO.
