What's better NMN or NR at raising cellular NAD levels? Which fruits and vegetables are located with pesticides? What's one thing about rapid weight loss that nobody talks about? These are my takes on several health articles that crossed my computer screen recently. This episode will go longer because I also, at the end, added the audio files to several YouTube videos too. According to a recent article by Christina Frangou in the Guardian, "doctors are dying by suicide at higher rates than the general population. Somewhere between 300 to 400 physicians a year in the US take their own lives, the equivalent of one medical school graduating class annually." This sobering statistic from the eye-opening Guardian article (aptly titled "US surgeons are killing themselves at an alarming rate. One decided to speak out") resonated with Your Doctor Friends, and we are fortunate enough to have the inspiration of that article, Dr. Carrie Cunningham HERE WITH US! Dr. Cunningham is an endocrine surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital and holds a professorship at Harvard. She was recently elected President of the Association of Academic Surgery. Her Presidential Address at the AAS 2023 National Meeting, titled “Removing the Mask” created quite a stir, as she shared her personal struggles with depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, and her connection to a friend and colleague (Dr. Christina "Tina" Barkley) who died by suicide. Imagine getting up in front of thousands of your colleagues and baring the most vulnerable parts of yourself. It took tons of courage, and the YouTube video of her address went viral. This week we try a bit of a “hybrid” format for Health Headlines. We just had to capitalize on this fantastic opportunity to speak directly with the subject of the article, and get her take straight from the source! Thanks for listening to this one, friends, it means a lot :) Resources from the episode include: The Guardian article, "US surgeons are killing themselves at an alarming rate. One decided to speak out." YouTube link to Dr. Carrie Cunningham's Presidential Address at the 2023 Academic Surgical Congress, titled "Removing the Mask." The 1973 JAMA article, "The Sick Physician. Today we've got the health hazards that are not making enough headlines and what you need to know to keep yourself healthy after a disaster. Then I'm talking about the future of plant-based protein with Jonathan Golan and how his company Brevel is making microalgae for the masses. How to Detox After Toxic Chemical Exposure: It's been 13 days since a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in East Palestine. Fires broke out and residents evacuated. Officials had to burn off a dangerous chemical called vinyl chloride before it could explode, causing a toxic pillar of smoke to tower over the town for days. Unfortunately, the aftermath of the accident is still being felt, with dead fish appearing in the creeks, and local residents reporting sudden deaths of chickens and illnesses in their pets. If you have been affected by this disaster, it is imperative that you take your health back into your own hands and assist your body in the detox process. Make sure to drink filtered water, which can remove some of the contaminants. Using an air purifier in your home, preferably with an UltraHEPA filter, can also help reduce exposure to the dangerous chemicals in the air. Taking supplements like nascent iodine, superfoods, and probiotics can assist your body in the detox process. It's also crucial to support drainage in the body, whether that means having daily bowel movements or sweating through exercise or saunas. Ultimately, it's important to focus on what we can control in situations like this. We may not be able to control the disaster itself, but we can control our own health and safety by taking steps to limit our exposure to dangerous chemicals. The Future of Protein is Microalgae: Yonatan Golan is passionate about making the world a better place through sustainable nutrition, social change and cutting edge science. He transitioned to a vegan diet in 2012 and believes in a bright future on this planet. With his brothers he founded the company Brevel. Brevel makes microalgae alternative protein which is affordable, flavor and color neutral, highly functional, sustainable and scalable. Brevel is providing microalgae based alternative protein which is affordable, flavor and color neutral, highly functional, sustainable and at consistent and scalable production. Thanks to Brevel's unique proprietary technology breakthrough the future of nutrition will be sustainable at global scales. Today we discuss why the future of protein is microalgae, colonizing Mars, and the truth about The Martian film with Matt Damon. Thank You to Our Sponsors! Ray's Healthy Tidbit About Health Headlines That Can Be Scary Episode 056 by Ray Solano
Featuring Dr. John HuberStress Mess: 3 In 5 Millennials Say Life More Stressful Now Than Ever BeforeSmartphones and digital technology are supposed to make our lives easier, but for young adults, it seems that things may only be getting tougher — and for a slew of reasons. According to one recent survey, about 3 out of 5 millennials (58%) feel life is more stressful right now than ever before. In fact, the survey of 2,000 American millennials, commissioned by CBD oil company Endoca, reveals that one-third of millennials believe their lives are more stressful than the average person’s life. The survey also pointed to numerous causes of the frustration for this young segment. Many feel their overall stress level is caused by the accumulation of daily micro-stressors — seemingly trivial experiences — such as being stuck in traffic, waiting for appointments, or various smartphone issues. For example, although losing one’s wallet or credit card ranked as the top source of stress for respondents, 1 in 5 say they’d be even more apoplectic if their smartphone screen broke. For more than 2 in 5 millennials (41%), a damaged phone screen is worse than seeing their “check engine” light flash on in the car.=====Slay The Smartphones: ‘Technoference’ Is Making Our Lives More Sluggish, Study FindsSmartphones are draining the number of hours we sleep, making us less productive, and could even be making some people feel physically worse in general, according to the results of new Australian survey.Mobile phone use has evolved into a major disruption to the daily lives of millions, if not billions, of adults worldwide.New research shows 1 in 5 women lose sleep because of the time they spend on their smartphones, versus 1 in 8 men.Technoference affects more than just our mental state. Respondents were even feeling more aches and pains that they believe are a result of smartphone use. That was the case, at least, for 8.4 percent of women (up from 3 percent) and 7.9 percent of men (up from 1.6 percent).

Every day we are bombarded with health news in our social media feeds: from studies touting the benefits—or harms—of a particular food to research on a new treatment for a disease. But how accurate are those headlines? That's the question a multidisciplinary research team led by Noah Haber, ScD '19, tried to answer. And their findings showed that health news shared in social media is likely to be overstated and/or inaccurate. In this week’s episode, we speak with Haber about how that happens—and what can be done to improve health reporting.

The Supreme count has ruled that 27 letters written by Prince Charles to Ministers, the so-called 'spider letters', should be made public. It follows a ten year campaign by the Guardian newspaper and reporter Rob Evans, who first submitted a Freedom of Information request to see the letters back in 2005. Steve Hewlett talks to Rob about the ruling, what it means for press freedom, and what he has learnt about the content of the memos. Talk of the Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz being "depressed" appeared on Friday's front pages. Mental health campaigners came out against the coverage, including Alastair Campbell, former spin doctor, and now ambassador for Time For Change. Steve speaks to him about his call to sack news editors who had published 'hideous' front pages, the role of the press in combating stigma, and why he thinks there's a danger in making a correlation between depression and violence.Dermot O'Leary will no longer present the X Factor after 8 years on the show. An X Factor spokesperson has said 'no decisions have been taken' on who will replace him, but the Sun revealed in a scoop on Saturday that Olly Murs and Caroline Flack are being lined up as his replacement. Steve speaks to the Mirror's TV critic Kevin O'Sullivan about what the story exposed about showbit and former BBC controller of commissioning entertainment, Jane Lush about the crucial role of the presenter in ensuring a programme's success. And in the third of seven interviews with political parties in the run up to the general election, we hear from Plaid Cymru about their media policy. Producer: Katy Takatsuki.
