This episode is the first of a series on the history of the Cinque Ports in which we bring you a mixture of fascinating history alongside a glimpse into contemporary life in these vibrant and ancient maritime towns. In the eleventh century during the reign of Edward the Confessor, five ports in the south-east of England joined together into a confederation for mutual protection and trade privileges. Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover, and Sandwich were the original five ports; they were subsequently joined by Lydd, Faversham, Folkestone, Deal, Tenterden, Margate and Ramsgate which became known as ‘Limbs' of the Cinque Ports; and then Rye and Winchelsea, designated as ‘Ancient Towns'. Not only did they help each other but they also helped the Crown: in return for providing men for the King's ships they received significant municipal benefits. The nominal head of the Cinque Ports was given the title of ‘Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports' and became one of the most influential people in the Kingdom. Over time the position has retained is significance and honour and has often been held by members of the Royal Family and Prime Ministers. To find out more Dr Sam Willis explores the deep history of the Cinque Ports with archaeologist and historian Dr Andrew Richardson and also speaks with Sue Jones, former Mayor of Dover and twice Speaker of the Cinque Ports. We also bring you along for a very special day at the Royal Military School in Dover to witness the installation of the new Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral Sir George Zambellas. In subsequent episodes we will explore some of the individual towns to get a sense of their intriguing past and dynamic present. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Youtube Version https://youtu.be/HHiTcNmnfic https://transformyou.co.nz "RTT Therapy is the only therapy that changes your neural pathways and brings about lasting change, and that therapy is hypnotherapy. It goes deep and changes your neural circuits in the way other therapy does not and cannot. Something magical, but also scientific, happens in hypnosis and that is the mind sends different messages to the body telling it what to do, and interrupts the signals coming back, so for instance, we can lessen pain and stop anxiety. Only in hypnosis can the critical factor shut down so that the mind will accept ideas that it may reject in a conscious state. So you can see RTT hypnotherapy rapidly does five things that other therapy cannot do and cannot do in that time frame. RTT sends out different messages from the mind to the body. ie bringing about deep lasting sleep RTT interrupts the signals /messages coming from the body to the mind. ie changing fear to excitement RTT shuts down the critical factor so new ideas and behaviours are more easily and rapidly accepted and implemented. ie radiating confidence and high self esteem. RTT takes you into the network of intelligence where the mind influences the body and allows you to influence it in a more positive way. ie ending addictions and limiting beliefs RTT changes out neural circuits/pathways so that our clients enjoy lasting change."

In today's episode, BAST founder Line Hilton returns to discuss the best vocal exercises for sick voices. Listen in to discover the differences between a sick voice and a well one. Line also explores the challenges of working with a student who is feeling below par, or post-operative. KEY TAKEAWAYS Often we don't hear or notice things in our own voices, so having a singing teacher who can point out issues such as breathiness and tension can be very useful. Vocal injuries can be very obvious, or quite subtle and more noticeable to the singer than to the external listener. This is why it's important to have good communication with your students to find out exactly what they're feeling. Line also discusses topics such as diet and hydration with students. It's important to make sure that, where possible, the singer is as healthy and fit as possible and that issues such as reflux and allergies are addressed. When working with someone who's post-op, the first thing Line will do is check that they have been cleared to return to singing. She will then ask them about the rehabilitation work they've been doing, for example, if they've been working with a vocal rehab coach or an SLT. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's always good to have a second pair of ears as well' ‘Extrinsic muscles are quite deep, and so you don't necessarily realise one of those deeper muscles is being hyper contracted and overworking' ‘I'll just gradually start to increase the range and get more challenging' ‘I'm always just checking in and changing one thing' EPISODE RESOURCES BAST Training Guest Website: basttraining.com Social Media: @basttraining Relevant Links & Mentions: Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 62 How to Choose the Best Vocal Exercises with Line Hilton: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4dWJ0kU0g65yJIpgVVWP6I?si=5c4983e81ec84c57 Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 73 The Best Vocal Exercises for Laryngeal Stability with Line Hilton: https://open.spotify.com/episode/434D7YZ7hWphm1ebzDi9ku?si=fc488543ded04559 Dr Jenevora Williams: https://jenevorawilliams.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 75 Vocal Rehabilitation for Singers with Dr Jenevora Williams: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4MMPy91Bhy0u58P01PUXo9?si=b67efa92d1a84498 British Association of Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM): https://www.bapam.org.uk/ Voice Care Centre: https://voicecarecentre.co.uk/ Vibrant Voice: https://www.vibrantvoicetechnique.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 32 The Bio-Psycho-Social Model with Stephen King: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4R13bvilWjwQnd9WOfTiVc?si=12271e4e200446b7 The Voice Clinic Handbook by Tom Harris & David Howard Clinical Voice Disorders by Arnold Elvin Aronson Anatomy of Voice by Blandine Calais-Germain & Francois Germain Laryngeal Endoscopy and Voice Therapy by Sue Jones & Carrie Garrett Principle of Voice Production by Ingo Titze Vocology by Ingo Titze and Kathrine Verdolini-Abbott The Voice Book by Kate DeVore and Star Cookman The Performer's Voice by Meredith Dame-Bunch Vocal Health and Pedagogy (Volumes 1 & 2) by Robert T. Americans have had a long love affair with British style, but the relaxed, layered, and richly detailed rooms the British seem to create so effortlessly often don't jibe with the hectic American lifestyle—or the pared-down architecture of so many American houses and apartments. It isn't easy to live the Downton Abbey life on this side of the Atlantic. Yet a new generation of young US designers and clients are increasingly attracted to the comfort and worn elegance of English rooms. Two exemplars of classic British style, designer Penny Morrison and Sue Jones, a founder of OKA, tell how the British look is evolving, why comfort and confidence remain all-important, how American energy can reinvigorate tradition, and why dogs are so crucial to the look. My guest this week is Clinical Voice Disorder Expert, Speech and Language Therapist Sue Jones, who I am thrilled to connect with at a pivotal moment in her life as only last month, after enjoying a very fulfilling career, she has now fully retired after a whopping 38 years service at Wythenshawe Hospital. Throughout her career, Sue has been instrumental in developing voice clinic services, as well as developing standards of competency at all professional levels - from student to expert practitioner. She is used to leading teams of voice specialists who perform, interpret and teach laryngeal endoscopy - otherwise known as taking a good look inside people's throats with specialist cameras and equipment, to assist with understanding and diagnosing a whole variety of speech, voice and swallowing disorders. Sue has lectured nationally and internationally and has been an integral cog in bridging the divide between the ENT, the SLT, the voice teacher and patient which has led to the gradual development of more multi-disciplinary voice clinics, suitable for voice professionals as well as others. Audiobooks (Part 1) with Caroline Lennon, Patrick Moy & Natalie Chisholm: Caroline (who played Siobhan Hathaway in The Archers on BBC Radio 4), Patrick and Natalie, all audiobook narrators and actors (and in Natalie's case a producer too), reveal to We’d Like A Word presenters Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan the secrets of audiobook narration and how they make your writing sound good. Part 1 is all Natalie. Natalie Chisholm, aka Redhead Voiceover, narrates classic short stories by Elizabeth Gaskell, Clara Venn and Oscar Wilde for B7 Media. She also has her own home studio for proper "punch and roll" recording - helped by her BBC presenting and producing background. In the other episodes we hear from Caroline Lennon - she's famous for playing the scarlet-haired temptress Siobhan Hathaway who has an affair with Brian Aldridge in The Archers on BBC Radio 4, so she takes questions from our audience on what happened on set and why she left. She also talks about the 350+ unabridged audiobooks she has narrated. 350! They include books by Brian McGilloway, Hannah Kent, Jane Casey, Maeve Binchy, Anne Enright, Peter Tremayne, Graham Masterton, Hannah Hauxwell and many many more. Caroline tells us about the only author who should be allowed to narrate their own books (only one), how she does it herself, discusses political extremes and representation. We also hear from Patrick Moy (aka Patrick Doddy) who has narrated about 50 unabridged audiobooks, including Blackwatertown by Paul Waters (hurrah!), and books by Hilary Mantel, Catherine Doyle, Fintan O'Toole, Paul Murray, JP Donleavy, Helen Cullen, Eoin Colfer, Ian Cobain, Edward Rutherfurd, John Chambers, Jim Hutton and Tim Wapshott. Plus stories of Freddie Mercury backstage and theatrical disasters. We also bring in authors Barbara Copperthwaite, Sue Jones, Joanne Frost Johnson, Monica Ali, Hallie Rubenhold and actors David Tennant, Rula Lenska and Andrew Scott. We'd Like A Word is a podcast and radio show from authors Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan. We talk with writers, readers, editors, agents, celebrities, talkers, poets, publishers, booksellers, audiobook creators about books - fiction and non-fiction. We go out on various radio and podcast platforms. Our website is www.wedlikeaword.com - which is where you'll find information about Paul and Steve and our guests. We're also on Twitter @wedlikeaword and Facebook @wedlikeaword and our email is wedlikeaword@gmail.com - and yes, we are slightly embarrassed by the missing apostrophes. We like to hear from you - your questions, thoughts, ideas, guest or book suggestions. Perhaps you'd like to come on We'd Like A Word in person, to chat, review, meet writers or read out passages from books. . .

He also raises stories of Freddie Mercury backstage and theatrical disasters. (Yes, it's the one about when Freddie Mercury tried Stevyn Colgan's helmet on for size and Patrick Moy crash landed into the scenery.) With excerpts of Patrick reading from Blackwatertown (by Paul Waters) and Rula Lenska reading from A Murder To Die For (by Stevyn Colgan - includes teeth being sunk into a scotum). Audiobooks (Part 3) with Caroline Lennon, Patrick Moy & Natalie Chisholm: Caroline (who played Siobhan Hathaway in The Archers on BBC Radio 4), Patrick and Natalie, all audiobook narrators and actors (and in Natalie's case a producer too), reveal to We’d Like A Word presenters Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan the secrets of audiobook narration and how they make your writing sound good. Part 3 is all Caroline. She is famous for playing the scarlet-haired temptress Siobhan Hathaway who has an affair with Brian Aldridge in The Archers on BBC Radio 4, so she takes questions from our audience on what happened on set and why she left. In the other episodes we hear from Patrick Moy (aka Patrick Doddy) who has narrated about 50 unabridged audiobooks, including Blackwatertown by Paul Waters (hurrah!), and books by Hilary Mantel, Catherine Doyle, Fintan O'Toole, Paul Murray, JP Donleavy, Helen Cullen, Eoin Colfer, Ian Cobain, Edward Rutherfurd, John Chambers, Jim Hutton and Tim Wapshott. Plus stories of Freddie Mercury backstage and theatrical disasters. We also bring in authors Barbara Copperthwaite, Sue Jones, Joanne Frost Johnson, Monica Ali, Hallie Rubenhold and actors David Tennant, Rula Lenska and Andrew Scott.
