Katie Sullivan has type 1 diabetes and uses an insulin pump. She is also a health care professional. During the last daylight saving time, or DST, change, she accidentally shifted the settings on her pump from a.m. to p.m. and received an incorrect dose of insulin, which caused an unexpected increase in her blood glucose level. Sullivan developed hyperglycemia because she was not getting enough insulin during the day. Fortunately, she caught the error before going to bed, when the altered insulin dose could have had damaging effects. Sullivan, a nurse practitioner at the Michigan State University Health Care Endocrinology Clinic, shared her experience with colleagues Saleh Aldasouqi, professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the MSU College of Human Medicine who also practices at MSU Health Care, and Howard Teitelbaum, professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. Together, they authored an article on the difficulties of DST, which was published in Clinical Diabetes, a journal of the American Diabetes Association. Conversation Highlights: (0:54) – Katie introduces herself. (1:24) – Saleh introduces himself. (2:20) – What's potentially dangerous about daylight saving time and insulin pumps? (4:54) – Katie, talk about how you discovered this issue. (6:37) – What can happen to a diabetic who doesn't have the correct time set on their pump? (9:30) – What should people who use insulin pumps be careful of? (11:59) – How many people in the country use insulin pumps? Listen to “MSU Today with Russ White” on the radio and through Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your shows.

Enabling addiction with free crack pipes and warm washcloths, and ignoring community (and free) solutions like Alcoholics Anonymous. In 2020, 10,000 AA participants studied were found it to be the most effective treatment. But not something the government controls. Common sense from an uncommon voice of reason and experience, this is not to be missed.

The Vermont Conversation with David Goodman

One year ago this month, when the pandemic arrived in Vermont, Gov. Scott ordered schools to end in-person instruction. Thus began the odyssey of the Class of Covid-19. In the Harwood Union Unified School District (HUUSD), which covers Waterbury, Duxbury, Moretown, Warren, Waitsfield and Fayston, its five elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school emptied out and all instruction moved online. The classrooms remained empty through August. Graduation at Harwood Union High School (HUHS) was a drive-through affair. Last fall, HUUSD students returned to their schools to begin a year of hybrid learning, with younger students spending up to four days in the classroom, and high school students attending two days in person, and three days online. I know these schools well: I have two children who are graduates of the Harwood schools, and I served on the school board of Harwood Union High School. These are schools that I'm used to seeing teeming with children. The sight of them empty last spring, as if suspended in an endless summer, was strange and unsettling. Wednesday marks a milestone: The teachers of HUUSD are getting vaccinated at a clinic set up at the Crossett Brook Middle School, part of a new statewide effort to vaccinate educators. By this fall, the hope is that students will return full-time to the classrooms of the Harwood district. I invited several members of the Harwood community to reflect on this pandemic school year. Jonah Ibson is an English teacher at HUHS, and Katie Sullivan is a fourth grade teacher at Warren Elementary School. Gavin Thomsen is a senior at HUHS.

It happens to many of us. We enroll in our dream university. We select our major with the fullest, purest intent of obtaining a career in our studied discipline upon graduation. Our parents are proud, as are our friends. But, when the moment finally comes to execute on this plan and enter the workforce, something's not right. We feel pulled in another direction. For Katie Sullivan, the plan was engineering, but the pull was to teaching. Bravely, Katie didn't resist like many of us would and do. Rather, she answered and followed her calling. After graduating from college, Katie entered the Teach For America program, which led her to Milwaukee and catapulted her into a 6th grade classroom. The journey hasn't always been easy—overcoming doubt, confronting a confused support system, moving across the country, and more—but, as she thinks back on her decision, it came down to one simple truth: in life, we regret the things we didn't do more than the things we did. She had to pursue this. She had to make her own way. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/journeymenpdcst/support

I was introduced to her by Sasha Korobov from Episode 273 - who I’ve kept in touch with and I really should record every convo I have with her and share it with you guys because she’s amazing - but Sasha introduced me to Katie and basically said, “You two need to meet and be on each other’s podcasts” and just made that happen. I had the pleasure of being on Katie’s show, Rise Through Strife, to talk about the inseparable nature of personal and business growth, and now she’s on Pep Talks today to share how she completely pivoted from professional opera singer to online business coach and all the lessons learned along the way. Katie and I talk about: Her journey to burnout and the complete 180 she and her husband made to get where they are today. The path to creating a successful creative business. How to get other people to value your work. How to figure out what your audience needs from you. How to make passive income. Advice for someone who is struggling to get traction in their side hustle. The belief Katie had to change about herself to get where she is today. My favorite quotes from Katie: “Our lives were built around our careers and it wasn't working.” “You have got to get clear on what you want for your life.” “What it is that you have to offer is truly valuable?" “It doesn't have to be saving somebody's life to make the impact that you want. Your little tiny piece of to add to the puzzle is enough.” “If you can put out the roadmap for them, without them having to go on a scavenger hunt for all the pieces and put it together themselves, that’s what changes people's lives.” “Social media is not the solution. Social media is the tool. The Couragemakers Podcast | Encouragement, Inspiration & Rebel Rousing for Mission Driven Doers, Makers & Shakers |

Hello Couragemakers! Today I'm chatting with Katie Sullivan, and I have to say, if you've ever felt like you could only have one path in life, this episode is for you. Katie is an opera singer turned entrepreneur who helps other creatives make a living online doing what they love.  After burning out pursuing a career in music, Katie teaches creatives how they can use their magic to make a living, so they can live connected, happy, and free. In today's episode we're really diving into Katie's journey, from having a musical background and pursuing music as a career to burnout and starting on her entrepreneurial journey. We cover SO much ground during our conversation, from living a life that looks good on the outside but feels shitty on the inside to debunking the myth that you have to choose one path and stay the course. There is so much good stuff in this episode - if you've ever felt like a rebellious overachiever, if you wonder whether you're on the right path, or if you wonder if there even is such a thing as the right path, this episode is for you! Enjoy the show! CAUTION: An absolutely rip-roarin’ good time is headed your way.My guest today, Katie Sullivan, helps creatives find their passion and purpose through online business. On top of her work helping her gorgeous clients, Katie is also an opera singer – yeah… a literal opera singer – and frankly one of the coolest people I’ve ever spoken with. For better or worse, there were times when I thought I was at a wine bar with a girlfriend instead of recording the show. That’s just the energy Katie brought out in me, and I dare you to resist that energy, too. On the show, Katie and I don’t hold back at all and talk about:Why you can’t market your way out of an unclear business ideaHow Katie’s background as a musician set her up perfectly for entrepreneurshipWhy Katie walked away from a doctorate to chase her real passionHow her business evolved into where it is now What propelled her into focusing on personal development for entrepreneursWhy your magic is needed in the worldI talk about some of the totally bogus sense of shame I felt by not being “far along enough” in my business journeyWhy you don’t need to carry that shame – and why the comparison trap is often the culpritThe rage-inducing truth about how we fall into the comparison trap, and why you shouldn’t trust all of what you see people advertisingWhy now is actually a great time to start a businessOnce you listen to this awesome episode, you're definitely going to want to learn more about Katie.
