Dr. Joseph Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience at the University of Florida. Joe studies DNA from squishy marine invertebrates like ctenophores (e.g. comb jellies), cnidarians (e.g. jellyfish), tunicates (e.g. sea squirts), and sea cucumbers. His goal is to understand how different types of animals are related, how animals adapt to extreme environments, and how animals have evolved the extraordinary diversity we see today. When he's not at work, Joe loves spending time with his family. He and his two kids enjoy dancing to “Tiny Bubbles” by Don Ho and songs by the band The Clash. Joe is also a fan of singer-songwriter Slim Whitman, and he plays guitar, drums, and keyboard. Joe received his PhD in bioinformatics from Boston University. Afterwards, he was awarded a research fellowship at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral scholar at Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology in Bergern, Norway. In our interview Joe shares more about his life and science.
The rundown includes stories on MPD deescalating things downtown, one singer commits the ultimate 'sin' and we lose two big stars of the small and big screen. Jake Coleman from the Americans For Prosperity joins with his take on last night and much more.
When I first heard about hydrosomes, I honestly thought, “That can't be real.” Hydrosomes are microscopic bubbles that stay in water without coalescing and rising to the surface. Then I met Nick Jackowetz, the Senior VP and Principal Scientist and the team from Hydrosome Labs at BIO 2024 in San Diego. They answered my questions and I invited Nick to be a guest on the podcast to share the story with you. Hydrosomes are also known as ultrafine bubbles, and they have incredible potential for many applications. If you've ever wondered how something as seemingly simple as a bubble could revolutionize fields like agriculture, cosmetics, and even fermentation, then this episode is definitely one to tune into.Nick started by breaking down the basics of what makes these ultrafine bubbles so unique. We're talking about bubbles so small that they're measured in nanometers—around the size of a virus particle. To put that into perspective, imagine a champagne bubble, which is already tiny to the naked eye. Now, pack a trillion of these ultrafine bubbles into that single champagne bubble, and you start to grasp just how small we're talking about. It's mind-boggling, right? These bubbles don't even float like the ones we're used to; they stay suspended in solution because they're not governed by the same buoyancy rules. This leads to some pretty wild implications for how they can be used.Even the physics of these bubbles changes at such a small scale. For instance, the pressure inside these bubbles can reach up to 30 atmospheres, which is 30 times the pressure we experience in our everyday environment. This intense pressure doesn't make them pop as you might expect; instead, it opens up new possibilities for gas delivery in various applications. Imagine being able to deliver oxygen directly to cells in a way that's more efficient and targeted than ever before. Because the bubbles have an enormous collective surface area, believed to be charged, the team is looking at how they attract and move nutrients around. While the concept has been around since the 1980s, the science has only really taken off in the last decade. The early research mainly came out of Japan, where these bubbles were first studied in applications like agriculture and aquaculture. It turns out that these tiny bubbles can help grow plants more effectively by delivering nutrients and gases directly to the roots. Are you subscribed yet? If not, let's fix that.I was curious to learn about potential applications. One area that's particularly exciting is their potential in consumer packaged goods, especially in cosmetics. Imagine being able to deliver active ingredients like vitamin C or retinol more effectively into the skin without the need for added chemicals. That's exactly what these ultrafine bubbles can do. By improving how these ingredients penetrate the skin, we could see a new wave of cosmetic products that are not only more effective but also safer for consumers. We didn't stop there. The potential for these bubbles in the beverage industry is another game-changer. Picture your favorite sparkling water, but instead of regular carbonation, the drink is infused with ultrafine bubbles. These tiny bubbles could enhance flavor profiles, reduce the need for added sugars, and even change the overall sensory experience of the drink. Nick mentioned ongoing research into how different gases inside these bubbles—like nitrogen or nitrous oxide—could create new taste sensations and improve the mouthfeel of beverages. The idea that you could enjoy a sweeter taste with less sugar is not just intriguing; it could have significant implications for the health-conscious consumer market. For life sciences, the interesting application is in fermentation processes. These bubbles could play a crucial role in making fermentation more efficient, which is especially important as industries increasingly rely on fermentation not just for food and beverages but also for producing pharmaceuticals, enzymes, and other valuable compounds. The idea that you could boost the growth and productivity of cells in a fermentation tank just by adding these bubbles is something that could have wide-reaching benefits, particularly for biotech companies looking to optimize their production processes without the need for expensive new infrastructure. To be clear, it's not just putting bubbles in the media. The effect, in addition to transporting oxygen, is enhanced by how the hydrosomes attract and transport nutrients. One of the most exciting projects Nick mentioned is a preclinical study on how these bubbles might affect the gut microbiome. Early evidence suggests that drinking water infused with ultrafine bubbles could positively impact gut health, potentially altering the microbiome in ways that benefit overall health. This could lead to a whole new category of wellness products that deliver health benefits just by changing the way water is consumed.Of course, there are still challenges ahead. One of the biggest hurdles is accurately measuring these bubbles, especially as they get smaller. The equipment needed to detect and analyze these tiny bubbles is still catching up with the science, which makes it difficult to fully understand their potential. But as technology advances, we can expect to see more precise tools that will allow scientists like Nick to push the boundaries even further.Whether it's improving the efficiency of fermentation, enhancing the delivery of cosmetic ingredients, or even opening up new frontiers in drug delivery and gut health, ultrafine bubbles are something to keep an eye on. I'm excited to see where this technology goes next, and I hope to have Nick back on the podcast in the future to update us on the latest developments. I'm particularly interested in what RNA analysis might tell us about how gene expression might change in cells grown in hydrosome-infused media. Stay tuned. But for now, enjoy the episode. BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb hosts practice run for new school bus riders On Tuesday, Cobb County School District held its annual ride-along event for kindergarten and first-grade students to practice their new bus routes. Parents and children got to familiarize themselves with the school bus and Cheatham Hill Elementary School, which also hosted an open house. This event allowed families to meet teachers, drop off supplies, and explore the school. The day featured cheerleaders from Hillgrove High School and offered an additional open house later for those who missed the morning session. Overall, around 3,600 participants attended, with over 70,000 students expected to ride Cobb's 1,000 buses as school starts today. STORY 2: Owens Maintains Fundraising Lead in Cobb Sheriff's Race Incumbent Cobb Sheriff Craig Owens, a Democrat, continued his strong fundraising into the summer, collecting $57,000 between April 30 and June 30. While this was a decrease from the previous period, Owens' total still significantly outpaces Republican challenger David Cavender, who raised just over $3,600 in the same period. Owens' notable contributors included Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. and Armor Health. Owens has raised over $547,000 since his first campaign, with more than half spent on advertising and other campaign expenses. Cavender, a U.S. Army combat veteran, has raised $36,000 overall, with significant early spending on campaign costs. The next fundraising deadline is September 30. STORY 3: Marietta Square Bookstore Expands The Reading Attic, an independent bookstore in Marietta, has expanded into the downstairs area of Tiny Bubbles Tea Bar, integrating their book sales with the tea bar's gift shop. This new space features additional shelves for books, including a selection of bestsellers and children's books. The expansion aims to improve accessibility, as the bookstore's original upstairs location had limitations for those with disabilities and parents with strollers. Tiny Bubbles, which now combines seating with bookstore space, sees the partnership as mutually beneficial. The Reading Attic, celebrating its one-year anniversary, hopes the expansion will boost visibility and allow for larger events. The bookstore will now match Tiny Bubbles' hours, operating daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Cobb Idol at the Strand raises funds for theater The Strand Theatre's fourth annual Cobb Idol competition on Saturday showcased local talent with performances of classic rock hits, themed "Rock 'n Roll Royalty." Featuring live bands, backup singers, and dancers, the event drew about 300 attendees. Contestants competed for a $500 prize, with Chris Wiggins winning both the judges' and audience votes for his rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'." The event also included a V.I.P. auction and raffle, raising around $35,000 for the theater. Cobb Idol, originally founded by Wendy Bunch and the Cobb Association of Realtors, was revived by the Strand Theatre to continue celebrating local talent. STORY 5: Cobb Recovers from Thunderstorm Tuesday night, Cobb County faced widespread damage and power outages from a severe thunderstorm with 60 mph wind gusts. Pulmonary embolism is a condition where one or more blood clots travel from elsewhere in the body, commonly from deep veins in the legs (a condition known as deep vein thrombosis), and lodge in the arteries of the lungs. This blockage can critically reduce blood flow to the lung tissue, causing damage. The lack of perfusion leads to impaired gas exchange as the alveoli are not able to oxygenate the blood effectively. Additionally, the presence of a clot in the pulmonary arteries increases the resistance against which the right ventricle must pump, which can lead to strain and potentially right-sided heart failure, a condition known as acute cor pulmonale. Make sure to join us for our next episode where we will do a review of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia in the pregnant patient. Visit our Facebook link. Long before the cola wars fought for domination over the taste buds of American youth, local brands dominated the refrigerators of families in the Delaware Valley. Coke and Pepsi took a back seat to a hometown favorite. But you would only know that if you lived within a 50 mile radius of Philadelphia City Hall. Join us as we crack open a can of Frank's Soda.
Nick Dyner, CEO of Moleaer, describes their unique nanobubble technology adaptable to multiple industries and water processes. Two-thousand, five hundred times smaller than a grain of salt, nanobubbles supersaturate water with oxygen and form natural oxidants for disinfection, improved plant health and increased ability to permeate soil and rock. Moleaer's patented nanobubble technology provides the highest oxygen transfer rate in the aeration and gas infusion industry. Nick shares how this technology can help purify contaminated waste water and address the growing global demand for water. Podcast Recorded on January 19, 2023
Jean McCarthy is the host of the podcasts, The Bubble Hour and Tiny Bubbles. Jean is also the author of Take Good Care, The Ember Ever There and the Unpickled series of recovery books.Jean was terrified to walk into an AA meeting when she got sober. It was an epiphany for Jean to quit drinking when she was ahead, instead of waiting until she lost it all. She was active and visible in her community and was concerned about what people would think about her. She learned later when she finally attended 12 step meetings, that no one really cared about her terminal uniqueness.Jean decided to start a secret blog called Unpicked about recovery to keep the story together and that she would document what it was like. She also felt, maybe this can help someone else who feels like me.Jean did not go to her first meeting until she was 8 years sober because she was looking for fellowship first and was afraid she'd be kicked out. Jean met a fellowship online from all over the world, but felt disconnected and alone in her own community. She learned in AA that she could take what she liked and leave the rest.Jean shared a powerful story about her son's wedding and how, when in the grips of alcohol addiction, she could only think about booze and how if her family realized who she really was, Jean would lose their love.Jean talked about why she is ending the hugely successful Bubble Hour podcast and her reason will shock you. It's the antithesis of her terminal uniqueness in addiction and a sign of her continued health in recovery. We were so blessed to have Jean McCarthy share her story of hope and recovery and know you will be affected like we were. You can find Jean McCarthy at https://jeanmccarthy.ca/Cantina Blues - Take the Lead by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1100407Artist: http://incompetech.com/Support the showIf you love our podcast, SMASH that follow button! This week, we're on Island Time, because Justin has written six trivia questions all about Hawaii! We also talk about Oscar-winning movies, classic literature, and an absolutely, utterly insane sport.1:47: Q1 (Times & Places): What decade saw both the overthrow of Hawaii's last monarch, Queen Lili'uokalani, and the annexation of Hawaii by the United States as an organized, incorporated territory?7:22: Q2 (Music): What Hawaiian musician, whose popularity peaked in the 1960s, is best known for the song “Tiny Bubbles”?15:42: Q3 (Everything Else): Identify the volcano goddess of traditional Hawaiian religion, whose name differs by a single diacritical mark from the nickname of one of the greatest soccer players in history.23:39: Q4 (Movies & TV): What 1954 Best Picture winner, based on a novel by James Jones, tells the tragic stories of three soldiers stationed in Hawaii in the lead-up to the attack on Pearl Harbor?29:25: Q5 (Arts & Literature): What author set his short story “Koolau the Leper” in a Hawaiian leper colony, though he is probably better known for a couple of novels about dogs?35:00: Q6 (Sports & Games): What grueling long-distance race has held its “World Championship” in Hawaii since 1978, and, despite its name, has nothing to do with a popular Marvel character?Theme music: "Thinking it Over" by Lee Rosevere, licensed under CC BY 2.0E-Mail: quizandhers@gmail.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/quizandhers/Twitter: https://twitter.com/quizandhersInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/quizandhers/Bore Meets World Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bore-meets-world-a-boy-meets-world-podcast/id1357883583Trivia Rewrites Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/11p7jE73IlHf2boxqMl4RC?si=NzcthXR2QTinmxQ1WbsOMA&nd=1

Take a look at how you can join us live on an episode. Our first letter is from Andy all about the Mannequins - he goes through this photo, explaining what each piece of hardware does. This is super helpful and also neat to look back; the system also included the classic 3.5" Floppy Disk! Going back to September, Jason sent us a tweet about his trip to WDW. So many good shots of the topics we have discussed over the years. Thanks, Jason! John touched base with us about the Mardi Gras parade items and props sitting in Port Orleans: French Quarter. Brian gives us the full story on this one and the connection is amazing. We also heard from Jacques, giving even more insight into this whole thing. Mr. Mardi Gras comes up and we love this back story. Thanks, everyone! We heard from Colleen on Instagram and she shared with us a super neat cup from Pleasure Island. These aren't very common to see anymore but we absolutely loved that you shared this with us! Dane wrote us about 'The Guide to Tomorrowland' - This was from way back in Episode 26: Tiny Bubbles. We included this item in our giveaway for the year - click here to read it! We got a letter from Carla regarding the Retro Food episode we recently did. She had quite a few corrections and insight into some restaurants in WDW. Phil wrote in about a friend who does high-profile celebrity security. Apparently, Tom Cruise used the services during a visit to WDW. This trip had many great stories and experiences, which Phil shared with us. Thank you so much Phil; this was great! Giveaway We have a copy of 'Walt Disney World: The First Decade' to send to one lucky winner. Send us an email with the subject line Decade to contest@retrowdw.com - we will pick a random winner from the entries to get this hardcover book from the 80s. Good Luck! Main Topic This month, we take you back to EPCOT Center and as far back as opening day. Magic Journeys: This is one of those short-lived attractions that most have not seen, but if you did, you get it. This was extremely high tech, advanced and the effort level that went into this is absolutely insane. Todd takes the lead, giving us a bit of history and why this whole thing came about. We hear from Murray Lerner, including original audio and interviews looking back at the creation of this film. Overall though, this film was intended to see the world through the eyes of a child. Of course, we get the technical reasons as to why 3D works and what is actually happening with your eyes. The 'how' of this film is something you really won't believe. Two whole years in the making with computer graphics, 75mm film, multiple frames on top of one another - the making of this film is a treasure trove of facts and figures. We also include clips from our interview with Mark Eades. He played a major role in creating this film, helping with the setup, and also was integral in making sure it worked. We also discuss the film made with the Dreamfinder, Ron Schneider. He goes into how they had to create a preview film all about Magic Journeys, just to have something in the theater for opening day. RetroMagic Fifty We have set our date for the next big Lake Buena Vista Historical Society event: RetroMagic 50. We will all be back at Walt Disney World in 2022 for this weekend-long event which takes place April 23-24. Please click the following link to sign up for ticket sale information and notifications. We hope to see you all real soon! 2021: Year Two of The Film To make sure you are the first to know when items are released, subscribe to us on YouTube. If COVID has taught us anything, it’s given us clarity. The first thing you should question for 2021 is “What do you want?” Dentists are realizing that “I might” or “I should” needs to turn into a solid plan. Do you want to recover losses? Do you want to grow? Do you want to slow down? Sometimes the best way to implement goals is to have someone come alongside you to help you through the process. That’s where Tonya Burns comes in. Tonya is a consultant working exclusively with pediatric dental practices. Her mission is to empower dental practices to reach success—whatever that looks like for them. Listen to this episode of Talking with the Toothcop to learn more! Outline of This Episode [2:20] Tonya Burns: Pediatric Dental Consultant [3:41] Tonya is MORE than a consultant [6:33] How to implement goals in your practice [12:32] What years of consulting have taught us [29:41] Implementing automation in dentistry [37:49] Tracking metrics with clients [39:20] Systems are great—so is accountability [41:58] Learn how to embrace change [43:07] How to connect with Tonya Burns Tonya is MORE than a consultant Tonya feels the word “Consultant” often comes with bad connotations. She wants to change the stigma. She comes into dental practices to help devise plans based on that office's wants and needs. She crafts her approach to each practice and what they’re capable of. She reinvents the wheel all the time. She enjoys being involved in every part of the process, from goal formation to implementation. She’s there to hold them accountable and give them direction. Sometimes she helps them fine-tune their own systems and redesign them. Her goal is for a practice to achieve their goals without leaving any patients behind. No one should fall through the cracks. A lot of patients falling through the cracks in pediatrics. Why? Because there’s so much volume. You need to identify holes in your practice and fix them before it’s too late. That’s where a wonderful consultant like Tonya can step in and be a game-changer for your people and your business. Implement SMART goals in your practice Tonya emphasizes that right now is a great time to be in pediatric dentistry. It isn’t feeling the effects like other specialties and general dentistry has. Parents will always do for their kids what they won’t do for themselves. Dental practices are also doing a great job at making their patients feel safe. Tonya also points out that now is a great time to set SMART goals (specific, measurable, attainable, results-oriented, and timebound). Do you want to recover losses? Do you want to grow? Do you want to slow down? What do you need to do to get the practice in the right position? You should set realistic goals that you can measure and attain. Let your team set some goals as well. What would they like to see happen? Have you realized you need more education to be more efficient? Consultants CAN empower change Tonya was hired to work with a practice that had a toxic environment. The dentist said, “I just want them to be happy.” The dentist had bought out another office, merged the practices, and told them “This is how it is.” They had broken processes. No one had any respect for each other. There were power struggles. They would even cuss each other out through their headsets. They worked through the problems and at the end of the relationship, she had all the “mean girls” texting her and thanking her. They didn’t realize how bad they were. The practice turned around and did well. People want to trust who they’re working with. It’s all about finding a connection and making sure you’re a good match. But you also have to walk away from people if you know you can’t help them. Implementing automation in dentistry Tonya is now helping implement automation in dental offices as part of her consultation service. They take repeatable processes, put a bot into use, and then teach the team how to use it properly. This is a way to work leaner and help your overhead. Robots can do insurance verification, track claims, do payroll, and even send claims and statements. They’ve now taught the robots to read EOBs and they should be able to post payments soon. You can program the bot to do anything that you want. But they still need a human running them. Implementing automation removes human error with small things and removes things that offices hate doing. It can clean up the process and streamline it. It all happened because Tonya met a pediatric dentist whose husband owned an automation business. She started helping to program them to work with a team in an office. Now they’re going live with clients. How long does it take to implement? If you want the robots customized to your practice—which is what Tonya advises—then the process takes about two weeks from testing and implementing to using. Wonderful things are coming for the pediatric community. Listen to the whole episode for the full conversation about pediatric consulting, implementing new technology, and the future of dentistry. On the first episode of the revamped Brewbound Podcast, a panel of guests discuss recent beer industry news stories, including the joint venture between Molson Coors and Yuengling, the DOJ’s approval of the merger between Anheuser-Busch InBev and Craft Brew Alliance, a study that found the beer industry could shed 651,000 jobs by the end of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the staying power of e-commerce sales. Guests include Tomme Arthur, San Diego-based founder of the Lost Abbey, Port Brewing, the Hop Concept and Tiny Bubbles; Caitlin Braam, Seattle-based co-founder of Yonder Cider and the Source Cider; and Bourcard Nesin, New York-based beverage analyst at Rabobank.
Tomme Arthur talks state of the industry, beer trends, dextrose farmers The Lost Abbey and Port Brewing are well known to most craft beer fans. Many of their beers make "White Whale" lists and see fans clamoring for short pours at bottle shares or searching trade forms to land their catch. Founder and Chief Operating Owner Tomme Arthur discovered craft beer while pursuing an English degree. By the time he he graduating his mind was set on a career in brewing. Prior to starting The Lost Abbey he earned several accolades at other breweries including Small Brewpub and Small Brewery of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival along with Small Brewpub and Small Brewery Brewer of the Year. Arthur talks with us about brewing in those early days and the styles that were popular, comparing beer to music and where we are as an industry. We discuss the role and importance of terroir in brewing, and how each beer tells a story. If you take a walk through fields this time of year, you can't help but notice what looks like gobs of frothy white spit on the stems of grasses and weeds. If you brush away the spit, you'll find a bright green froghopper or spit bug with shiny black eyes.

Dr. Joseph Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience at the University of Florida. In the lab, Joe studies DNA from squishy marine invertebrates like ctenophores (e.g. comb jellies), cnidarians (e.g. jellyfish), tunicates (e.g. sea squirts), and sea cucumbers. His goal is to understand how different types of animals are related, how animals adapt to extreme environments, and how animals have evolved the extraordinary diversity we see today. When he’s not at work, Joe loves spending time with his family. He and his two kids (one and three years old) enjoy dancing to “Tiny Bubbles” by Don Ho and songs by the band The Clash. In our interview Joseph shares more about his life and science.

Marietta Stories | Crazy cool stories from the community builders of Marietta, Georgia
Felecia Prezzano and her daughter Brielle Gaines continue to build their tea empire. Today, they opened their second store in downtown Woodstock building on what they learned from their Marietta Square location. By the time I arrived, they had served over 250 orders and were very busy. But they both had time to reflect on their journeys. We discuss their Instagram worthy restaurant design and the circle (bubble) motif designed by Cassandra Buckalew, the same Cassandra Buckalew from Season 1 of Marietta Stories Podcast. I also met a couple, Greg and Rose that drove up from Cleveland (Georgia) just to get some of that delicious Tiny Bubbles Tea! http://www.tinybubblesteabar.com http://www.cassandrabuckalew.com

This week, we're discussing an effect called cavitation: low pressure causes bubbles of vapour to form in a liquid, which can cause a lot of damage when those bubbles collapse. First up is Paul Brandner, Associate Professor and Research Leader of the Cavitation Research Laboratory at the Australian Maritime College, to discuss how these bubbles form and why they can be so destructive. And we talk with Suzanne Cox, artist, scientist, and engineer, to discuss her work with crustaceans who have evolved ways of controlling the effect when they strike snail shells.
