Bees are dying out and that's a big problem for us human beings. If bees and other pollinators disappeared altogether, we would lose a third of our food supply. Half of all the fruit and vegetables on our supermarket shelves would vanish. And the impact on our planet's biodiversity would be catastrophic. So what's our Plan Bee? How do we save the world's pollinators? In this episode, we dive into an example from the Nordic countries where work is under way to save the local brown bee from extinction. And we look at what is being done around the world to protect bees and the global food supply. This episode comes from an online Nordic Talks event organized by the National Nordic Museum in Seattle.

PODCAST EPISODE 60: Liz Frost, Technical Specialist of Bees and co-manager of Plan B, Hunter region, New South Wales, Australia There are a lot of people in the bee world who do amazing work, but every now and then you come across someone who truly blows you away. Liz Frost is undoubtedly one of those humans and I am thrilled to introduce her to the BEES WITH BEN beekeeping podcast for episode 60. Hailing from California, now residing in the Hunter region of NSW, Liz has worked in the United States and Australia in honeybee breeding and insemination and has a special ability to reflect on her experiences in the field. In a poem written for the publication 2 Million Blossoms, she aptly described the devastation of the bushfires that had been ravaging the area where she lived for some six months in 2019–2020; highlighting the resilience of the apiarists who “press on in secret… Tracking any budding trees left alive.” In this poem and its accompanying essay, she perfectly conjures the connection between beekeepers and the land, not to mention the vital role bees play is rejuvenating the environment after disasters such as this one. Liz Frost's CV is a brilliant manifesto of love for bees and the environment. She has had innumerable roles in the field both locally and overseas and is now working for the New South Wales Department or Primary Industries as a Technical Specialist of bees. In parallel and as part of her role, she is the co-manager of Plan Bee—the National Honey Bee Genetic Improvement Program run in collaboration with USYD, UNE and AGBU—Better Bees WA and the Wheen Bee Foundation—funded by DAWE Rural R&D for Profit Program. Her job involves managing research and development projects focusing on queen bee breeding and pollination, and providing technical advice to the beekeeping industry, government, researchers, media and the public. Her current project Plan Bee: Australia's National Honey Bee Genetic Improvement Program is a program that Liz co-manages with University of Sydney professor Dr. Nadine Chapman, whose research interest includes establishing “an economically sustainable national genetic improvement program using innovative breeding technologies to transform the performance of honey bees in Australia.” And that is what Liz and Nadine are doing with Plan B, as they evaluate and implement tools, technologies and systems to better honeybee breeding programs in Australia—amazing and inspiring work! AND excitingly, the Plan B Info Workshop for queen breeders is happening in just a few days on 2 July 2021. For further information on the event, make sure you check out the AgriFutures Australia website http://www.agrifutures.com.au/partnerships/rural-rd-for-profit-program/plan-bee/ Tune in to hear the inspiring Liz Frost and I chat about how she is helping to improve breeding programs for bees in Australia.

Matty and Noah are reunited to talk broken bones, Charleston, and a topic of surprising depth: beer names. With an ever-growing number of conceptualized or finished beers requiring monikers, the need come up with a fitting name for a given beer - and the process of getting there - is starting to weigh heavy on the guys' minds. As some thinly-veiled therapy, they let their polar perspectives clash by listing and explaining their respective five "favorite" beer names out there, in hopes of finding some semblance of direction as to what the hell to christen those beers piling up in Milo.

Honeybees' role in pollination enables the production of at least 90 commercially grown crops, including apples, blueberries, melons and broccoli, but recently a dwindling bee population has led to concerns for the stability of this eco system. Industrial design major Anna Haldewang wanted more people to understand the significance of bees to human life -- so she created what's essentially a "bee drone" to be a functional teaching tool that couples technology and design. Plan Bee is a personal robotic bee (controlled by a smart device) designed to mimic how bees pollinate flowers and crops. Similar to how bees transfer pollen from one flower to another, the drone sucks in pollen from a plant and expels it onto other flowers to enable cross-pollination. Anthony and Jeff discuss robot bees and whether this might be the solution the planet is hoping for. GET BONUS EPISODES, VIDEO HANGOUTS AND MORE. Season 3, Episode 19 – This week we’re drinking some brews form New York and New Jersey and a new Grapefruit IPA from our friends at Refuge Brewery in Temecula, California. Natalie DeNicholas and John Ryti are also back with us. Four Brewers has the best listeners. It’s true. Just putting that out there. I say that because four of the five beers we’re drinking on the show this week were graciously provided by Four Brewers listener Robert Perry. Getting east coast beers is tough for us, but fans like Robert have been stepping up lately and sending us some killer stuff.  Carton, Newburgh, and Plan Bee Beers The first two beers are from New Jersey’s Carton Brewing Company. Unbeknown to us, Carton is actually a great get for us here on the west coast, and the two IPAs we got from Robery were fresh AF. That’s how you do it folks: ship ’em fast and fresh! Plan Bee and Newburgh Wax-Stamped Bottle Caps Next up are two beers, both from two breweries that we had no idea even existed, Plan Bee Farm Brewery and Newburgh Brewing Co. The two beers are what they call a “100% NY Sour Ale” and are made with locally sourced ingredients from around the state of New York. Both beers are the exact same recipe, but each was fermented with two different yeast strains–one from Plan Bee and one from Newburgh. These beers were really great. Folks in NY/NJ are lucky to be able to get this magical juice… Refuge Brewery – Grapefruit IPA We wrap up the show with a new beer from a local favorite of ours, Refuge Brewery out of Temecula, CA. Temecula’s beer scene has really been blowing up lately, and Refuge was there at the beginning of the boom. Their Blood Orange Wit is well known in these parts, and since they nailed the fruited witbier category, they decided to try their hand at an IPA with grapefruit. Much thanks again to Robert Perry for the beers…Hail Satan.
