If this story of healing inspires you, like or share this video so that others can know there is hope for healing! Known as Forest online, my guest today shares his story of healing from what was diagnosed as repetive strain injury or over-use injury. He had a full recovery as he understood the symptoms were just his brain. From there, he went on to found TMS Wiki - a website that has provides free resources for those healing from neuroplastic symptoms.https://www.tmswiki.org/forum/forums/... Here is a bit about him: After an 18-year battle with neuroplastic symptoms attributed to 'repetitive strain injuries,' Rob, known as Forest online, fully recovered by employing a mind-body approach. Inspired by his recovery, he founded TMSWiki.org, the largest peer-driven resource dedicated to educating the public about neuroplastic symptoms. Rob created the 'Thank You, Dr. Sarno' tribute book, which was featured in Dr. Sarno's New York Times obituary. He also provided technical support to Alan Gordon in developing a free 21-day recovery program, donated to the wiki during fundraising for the Boulder Back Pain Study. Rob co-founded and has served as Vice President of the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Disorders (ATNS) since its inception, reflecting his ongoing commitment to raising awareness and support for mind-body healing. Professionally, Rob runs discussion sections for adult learners pursuing their master's degrees in finance and management, with a specialization in health economics and decision-making. Ever wondered why your pain/symptom persists despite countless treatments? The missing piece might be simpler than you think. Tanner and Anne reveal how our tendency to disconnect from uncomfortable bodily sensations actually perpetuates pain and symptom cycles rather than resolving them.Through candid stories about tax scares and zip-lining disasters, they illustrate the dramatic difference between being overwhelmed by sensations versus staying present with them. This isn't just theory—brain scans actually show people with chronic pain have decreased activation in areas that sense the body, while experiencing heightened emotional responses. The result? A brain that misinterprets safe signals as dangerous ones. The hosts break down two essential principles for healing through embodiment: gradual exposure to uncomfortable sensations paired with creating safety signals that keep you connected without becoming overwhelmed. This delicate balance allows your nervous system to recalibrate and recognize when you're truly safe.Whether you've been struggling with persistent pain/symptoms for years or just beginning to notice troubling symptoms, this episode offers practical wisdom for creating a healthier relationship with your body's signals.Ready to start your embodiment journey? The hosts provide free resources to begin practicing these techniques today, guiding you toward a life where sensations no longer trigger fear but offer valuable information for your healing path. This podcast is owned by Pain Psychotherapy Canada Inc. Your nervous system might be stuck in a state of high alert, creating very real pain and symptoms even when there's no physical damage. In this second part of our exploration into neuroplastic pain, we reveal the sensitization factors that make chronic symptoms more likely to develop. We break down how chronic nervous system dysregulation—whether you're stuck in states of fight, flight, freeze, or fawn—creates the perfect conditions for neuroplastic symptoms to emerge. High-intensity living patterns like perfectionism, people-pleasing, and excessive worry aren't just personality traits but coping mechanisms that keep your system on constant alert. Conversely, low-intensity patterns of disconnection and isolation sensitize your system through understimulation.Research shows people with histories of childhood adversity or trauma are 2.7 times more likely to develop conditions like chronic widespread pain, fibromyalgia, and IBS. We emphasize it's not about the size of traumatic events but how your unique nervous system responded to them. Even highly sensitive individuals can experience profound effects from events others might consider minor. We also explore two often-overlooked trauma types: sensitization trauma (when developing symptoms becomes traumatic itself) and medical trauma (from negative healthcare experiences). Both perpetuate pain cycles by creating additional layers of nervous system dysregulation. Finally, we discuss how negative beliefs about your body being "broken" or "permanently damaged" increase pain sensitivity. Understanding these factors isn't about assigning blame but creating space for recognition and validation—a crucial first step toward healing. You don't need to match every criterion for your symptoms to be neuroplastic, and your belief that healing is possible can grow over time. By recognizing these patterns and gathering your own evidence, you're already beginning the journey of unlearning chronic pain and reclaiming your life. This podcast is owned by Pain Psychotherapy Canada Inc. How do you know when your chronic pain/symptoms are neuroplastic rather than structural? This question plagues countless people, who often find themselves caught between conflicting medical opinions, inconclusive test results, and treatments that provide only temporary relief. In this enlightening first installment of a two-part series, Tanner Murtaugh and Anne Hampson break down the concrete criteria that help identify neuroplastic pain and symptoms. They share that neuroplastic pain/symptoms occur when your brain and nervous system remain stuck in a state of danger despite no structural damage in your body - and importantly, you don't need to meet all criteria to benefit from a neuroplastic approach. The hosts walk through the first category of evidence: when pain doesn't make physical sense. From symptoms that originate during stressful times to pain that worsens with difficult emotions, from inconsistent symptom patterns to pain that spreads and migrates through the body - these are all powerful clues pointing toward neuroplastic mechanisms. They explain why triggers disconnected from the body (like weather or certain environments), delayed onset pain, and symptoms without injury are particularly telling.Tanner and Anne weave personal experiences throughout, sharing how Tanner's own pain coincided with major life transitions, and how they've observed these patterns across hundreds of clients. They offer reassurance that while identifying neuroplastic components can feel overwhelming, approaching the assessment with curiosity rather than fear is key. This episode provides invaluable guidance if you've tried numerous treatments without lasting improvement or received diagnoses that don't fully explain your symptoms. Listen now to gain clarity and hope as you begin unraveling whether your persistent pain/symptoms might be treatable through neuroplastic approaches.Ready to explore how your brain might be generating your symptoms? Tune in next week when they tackle the second category: sensitization factors that make your nervous system more susceptible to neuroplastic pain. This podcast is owned by Pain Psychotherapy Canada Inc. The powerful connection between OCD patterns and chronic pain might be the missing puzzle piece in your healing journey. Tanner and Anne dive deep into how obsessive thinking and compulsive behaviors fuel neuroplastic symptoms, creating a cycle that keeps pain and symptoms alive. You'll discover why that constant symptom checking, endless research, and anxious monitoring actually reinforce your brain's pain circuits rather than solving the problem. With vulnerability and humor, the hosts share their own experiences with OCD tendencies—from Tanner's shoulder-testing ritual to Anne's encounters with health anxiety—and how these patterns operated both before and during their pain experiences. The solution? Cultivating indifference. But don't roll your eyes just yet! This counterintuitive approach isn't about ignoring your pain or pretending it doesn't exist. Instead, it's about starving pain of the attention that keeps it thriving. The hosts offer practical, actionable strategies for breaking free from obsessive patterns: naming your symptoms with silly names, recognizing when your brain is trying to help (but making things worse), and—perhaps most importantly—giving your brain something valuable to focus on besides your symptoms.Whether you've been diagnosed with OCD or simply recognize some of these patterns in your relationship with chronic pain, this episode provides a compassionate roadmap for change. Progress isn't linear, and even small shifts toward indifference represent significant healing. Ready to loosen pain's grip on your attention and reclaim your life? This chapter delves into the darkest period of her life, unveiling the profound struggles that ultimately paved the way for her transformation.Dr. Hensley opens the episode by sharing the fallout of her first marriage, marked by her ex-husband's battle with addiction and abusive behavior. Their relationship ended in a bitter custody battle, during which Dr. Hensley did everything in her power to help him rebuild his life for the sake of their children. However, his sudden marriage to another woman and his decision to redirect his life insurance policies to her left Sarah financially and emotionally shattered, raising their children on her own.The spiral deepened with the tragic news of her ex-husband's death—a revelation she learned only after others, including her dismissive-avoidant ex-boyfriend, who broke the news to her best friend Raina before Sarah even knew. Adding to her grief, her mother was battling pancreatic cancer, and Sarah was reeling from a breakup with the same boyfriend who continued to breadcrumb her during her most vulnerable moments. At her lowest point, Dr. Hensley's physical health began to deteriorate rapidly. She woke up one day with debilitating symptoms—her world a blur, everything spinning, and a sensation of walking on a trampoline. She was left wondering why no one was connecting her physical condition to the immense emotional trauma she had endured. It wasn't until she discovered Alan Gordon's podcast Tell Me About Your Pain that she began to understand the link between emotional trauma and physical ailments. This discovery set her on a path of healing through faith, science, and self-compassion.Dr. Hensley recounts how a close friend introduced her to Be In Health Ministries, where she began to experience profound spiritual healing, regaining 80% of her health. The remaining 20% came through her study of neuroplasticity and its relationship to pain, empowering her to rewrite her body's story of trauma and reclaim her life.In the final moments of the episode, Dr. Hensley shares the tools and practices that transformed her life and now form the cornerstone of her coaching and teachings. With a thriving business, a loving marriage, and a peaceful heart, Dr. Hensley's journey is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. This is our 33rd episode, the fourteenth of our second season, and joining us to tell us his story is our first guest from Asia, English teacher Alan Gordon, who attended Carmel College from 1974 to ‘81. Alan grew up in North West London, where his family had moved from Edinburgh. After Carmel, he studied History and Politics at Queen Mary, and subsequently worked in finance. Twenty-five years ago, he moved to Osaka, where he teaches intensive pre-departure English to Japanese executives. He and his Balinese Hindu wife Ari have had two children. Hear Alan talk about his father's work with Sean Connery; asking during his interview where in the school the playground was; why he felt sorry for the boy whose parents drove a Jaguar; The Inbetweeners' Carmel connection; Vera Rosen's Florence Nightingale moment; tackling Rabbi Rosen's Volvo (in his driveway) and his ankle (on the football pitch); benching in the style of Elvis; and his proudest Carmel moment, at Arsenal. Thank you, Alan Gordon, for turning us again to Carmel days! Dedication: at Alan's request, this episode is dedicated to the memory of the late Sonia Sabel, a former French teacher and Girls' Housemistress at Carmel, who - in Alan's words - nourished him “with the milk of human kindness” and gave him and many others “a home from home”. For being there for him time and time again, and teaching him how to love life's smallest blessings, she resides deep in his heart forever. Mrs. Sabel was born as Sonia Shine around 1926 and (predeceased by her husband and eldest son, Jimmy), passed away in the 1990s. Welcome back, dear listener. In today's episode, I got to chat with someone I've admired from afar for a long time, Whitney Rydman. I first came across Whitney some years ago, when I was early in my recovery from migraine and I was binging Nicole Sachs's podcast, which is called The Cure for Chronic Pain. Whitney was a guest who came on the podcast to talk about her own personal recovery from pelvic pain. She had such an engaging and inspiring voice that I wanted to know more, so I followed her on Instagram, as one does. And I eventually learned that Whitney is not only an incredible person who talks about her own healing in a relatable and uplifting way, she's also the amazing graphic designer behind the websites and social media branding of many well-known names in the chronic pain recovery world, including Nicole Sachs, Alan Gordon, the Curable app and more. But she didn't start out in the mind-body world. Whitney studied graphic design at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and shortly after college, she was recruited as the lead designer for Jamba Juice, applying her hand-lettering and illustration skills as part of her design work for all their in-store collateral. Other brands she's worked on include Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Williamns-Sonoma. But after working as a corporate designer in the retail space for over 15 years, she reached a point of burnout and her body let her know. She discovered what she was experiencing was TMS — or mind-body chronic symptoms — and she was amazed at the results of using neuroplasticity in her recovery. Since then, she became passionate about using her design experience to service experts in the mind body space. Whitney also winds up coaching her design clients on what has become my favorite topic lately: How the entrepreneurship journey totally mirrors the mind-body healing journey, with all of its ups and downs, leaps forward and setbacks, and I can't wait to share with you our conversation about it! What happens when an injury becomes chronic and the way out is not what you envisioned? This is not just an episode about recovering from an injury (or in Amy's case, perhaps two injuries). It's about the journey into Amy's chronic injury, how it progressed and became constant, and the frustrating mental toll over 18 months that included multiple doctors, treatments, false starts, fear, doubt, and finally hope and a change in perspective. The first half of this podcast focuses on the physical- the progression of low back and hip labrum pain- symptoms, treatments, and more. And the second half delves into what happened when Amy basically hit rock bottom and spiraled into a place she needed help getting out of. The way out was found not only externally (with PT and strength and progression), but also was found within, by taking a deep dive into her brain and the subject of neuroplastic pain in order to get out of chronic pain and also find a new path forward, mentally and physically. Have a listen!
