So I think it's really important to share recipes and to document recipes so that generations can experience that same love for generations to come.” - Tommi Vincent Connect with Gabrielle McBayWebsite: https://www.gabriellemcbay.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/gabriellemcbay Twitter: https://twitter.com/gabriellemcbay Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chefgabriellemcbay Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/gabriellemcbay Check out her latest book for all things beautiful and delicious: https://www.gabriellemcbay.com/shop/you-have-food-at-home-1 Connect with Me! For a lot of Eagles fans, football means family. Watching the games together, passing your love of a team to your kids and creating your very own game day traditions. The Eagles' family is a big one - we've all heard a “GO BIRDS” if we're outside of the city proudly wearing our Eagles Green. To that end Derrick is adding an ‘f' to his list this week - it's still food, football and fun but he's coming in with family in this episode. Derrick interviews three guests who embody all of the above. Tommi Vincent is an entrepreneur, mother, and grandmother. She's a podcaster, a chef and co-founder and COO of Vincent Country, “ which pays homage to the accomplishments and the strength of the Black family unit and is considered as its own country.” Tommi is also the wife of Eagle's legend Troy Vincent. Tommi shares stories of the importance of food in her family and why sitting down for a meal all together is one of the highlights of her day. Brandon and Carlyne Graham are raising two kids with a simple food rule: “you at least have to try it.” Then and only then can you decide you don't like it. While Brandon was recovering at home he told Derrick about Carlyne's specialties, who does most of the cooking and how his newer diet changed the way the family eats. Or and Carlyne dishes on what Brandon cooked for her when they were dating, but doesn't cook anymore. Colleen Wolfe and Ross Tucker gather around the family table with only one topic to discuss - which holiday has the best food. Pedicure done? Check. A good glass of wine? Check. And now, let's discuss the deeper meaning of self-care. Because, all the external pampering is wonderful, but when it wears off, do you still feel well? What tools do you have to combat mental and emotional blocks? How are you showing up for yourself when life throws you a curveball? Dr. Cassandre Dunbar, host of the Be Well, Sis podcast stops by Stay A While in this episode to get right down to the bare bones of self-care with transparent and thoughtful insight. Turn your speakers up and listen in. Cassandre Dunbar is a woman of many hats. She's a mother of 2 young boys, medical doctor, wife, educator, Wellness blogger, and host of the Be Well, Sis Podcast. Cassandre is incredibly passionate about the wellness and self-care practices of Black millennial women. Shortly after graduating medical school, Cassandre became pregnant with her eldest and was made very aware of the things that she put both in and on her body. This became even more important after giving birth to a child with many sensitivities and allergies. In doing her own research, she learned that there was a large gap between what she had learned in medical school and what it truly means to be well. In her quest for knowledge, she quickly realized that we are often underrepresented or alienated in Wellness spaces although we often also suffer the worst medical outcomes compared to our peers. And when we use it the proper way. It really has the opportunity to transform whatever situation we're in.” - Tommi Vincent “Success is about operating on purpose, personally, and professionally.” - Teneshia Jackson Warner “I've learned in failure is surrendering in acceptance of what's for you is for you and what's not is not, and there are going to be times where things that you desire. In our mind, there are things that will show up as failure, experiences that may show up as failure. However, God will have another plan for what that failure really is. And we got to leave room for God to get in there and show you what His will is for your life.” - Teneshia Jackson “The more you hold on to something that is not for you, the more time you waste. And time, I believe personally, is the greatest commodity that we have on this earth. And you will not get it back. So when you let it go, you free up time to explore the things that are for you.” - Tommi Vincent “Always examine where fear may be asking you to play in a smaller arena that you have outgrown, where fear may be asking you to operate in a dream that has expired. There's such a thing as expired dreams, you have to renew them and listen for fresh anointings. Anywhere fear is stagnating you, that's where you probably need to lean in.” - Teneshia Jackson Connect with Teneshia Jackson Warner Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/teneshiajwarner/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/teneshiajwarner/ Book: https://www.amazon.com/Big-Stretch-Expand-Dreams-Success/dp/1260456803 Connect with Me! “Follow the path of peace when we think about unhealthy relationships, not only with others but within ourselves. Some of us have toxic beliefs about ourselves, limiting thoughts, and self-sabotaging behaviors... Allowing yourself to really believe that you deserve the peace and kind of giving yourself permission to have a life that's full of it.” - Davia Roberts Welcome to Stay a While with Tommi Vincent! Ice Cube once said, “Check yourself before you wreck yourself” and while the song was a bop in the 90s, it still begs the question, “How often do we actually check ourselves?” Do we have the tools we need to recognize when we're being less than loving? When we're being petty? Do we know how to course-correct? And then, what about our boundaries? If others don't know how to check themselves, how do we set proper boundaries to maintain our peace of mind and forward movement? Well, of course, we're not just posing questions. We have Davia Roberts, a licensed professional therapist at the table and we're serving up some real talk on recognizing and navigating toxic behavior because nobody likes a Petty Betty. In 2020, the weight of our personal lives seeped into our careers more than ever. Some companies took note and made a commitment to integrating mental health and wellness into the company culture. I've had the pleasure to partner with companies like ServiceNow, Fidelity Investments, and Lululemon to develop therapeutic programming to support the mental health and wellbeing of their staff members. As a mental health consultant, I cultivate space for professionals to process their feelings and develop new tools for coping. Employees often share how they feel valued when leadership is willing to invest in their wellbeing. Plus, leadership notes the boost in morale. In 2021, I hope more companies become wellness-minded and I'd love to help more companies make the transition. - Davia Roberts In this episode we cover [00:01 - 04:16] Take a Seat at the Stay A While Table [04:17 - 10:52] Food Is Love, Therapeutic, and Nourishing [10:53 - 23:21] Identifying the What and the Who: Behavior, Abuse, and Relationships [23:22 - 36:55] The Intentional Call to Action - Paving the Path to Maturity [36:56 - 48:34] Becoming the Most Important Person in Your Life [48:35 - 52:56] Closing Segment Key Quotes “If we don't communicate what those things [boundaries] are, we're going to continue to be in a toxic relationship, because we're both contributing to this pattern of frustration, not having healthy boundaries or healthy communication... It's important to figure out or just start with the question, one, ‘What's really bothering me in this situation?', ‘What do I need to communicate as far as my hurt?', and ‘What do I need to communicate for my boundary or my need moving forward so we can have a healthy relationship?' And lastly, if that doesn't change, what am I willing to do about it?” - Davia Roberts “When you don't recognize that the environment that nurtured you, and, you know, formed you into the adult that you are, if you're not able to see the dynamics of that, the behavior you're learning is just going to carry over into your adult life, and into your relationships. And until you're able to see that for yourself, then you're not going to make the changes necessary to become an adult, and to be mature. ” - Davia Roberts “Yes, it is easier said than done. But I'm like, if you want something to be different, imagine or just revisit the discomfort you had when people use those same techniques on you when someone you cared about didn't speak to you for weeks when you didn't know what you did wrong, but you could feel the discontent and the strain in the relationship, even though you wanted to fix it.” - Davia Roberts See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“One of the things just for me personally: The ability to maintain my joy is recognizing that everything is not a crisis.” - Tommi Vincent Welcome to Stay a While with Tommi Vincent! You're perfectly fine. We are sitting here altogether, all alive, all eating. We're good.” - Diahann Billings-Burford “The most important part of this Christian walk is choice.” - Diahann Billings-Burford “Someone else can't make the choice for you. “If you know that you're not a person who's easily irritated, and you find yourself becoming easily irritated, that might be a definite sign that you are out of mental alignment. If the things that normally bring you joy, you're no longer interested in, you might be out of mental alignment. If you feel it in your body, then you might be out of mental alignment.” - Dr. Dominique Broussard Welcome to Stay a While with Tommi Vincent! If you're tired of feeling worn out, stressed, and like you're stuck in the same sick mental and emotional rut, this episode is for you! Licensed psychologist Dr. Dominique Broussard aka “Dr. Dom” has some immediately actionable tools to help all of us speak up and out for our mental and emotional health. Whether you're 25 or 75, right now is always the best time to learn how to give yourself what you need. For some of us it might be taking inventory of how much sleep we're getting (or not). For others it may be checking in on our spiritual practice. Dr. Dom breaks down her top three strategies for ensuring alignment and exactly what we need to find our voice and speak up for our mental health. More affectionately known as, Dr. Dom, I was born and raised in New Orleans. I received a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and a Master's degree in Community Counseling from The University of Georgia. My Bachelor's degree is in Psychology from Loyola University New Orleans. My career has focused on providing therapy and teaching at college campuses in Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, and California. While I am unapologetically here to provide care for Black people, I use a culturally responsive approach to make clients from any background feel welcome. When I am not seeing clients through my private practice, you may find me working with college students at the University of San Francisco or creating space for Black women through my co-hosted podcast, Cultivating H.E.R. Space. My loves (in no particular order): reading good books, my family, friends, podcasting, traveling, Peloton workouts, and wine. In this episode we cover [00:01 - 02:41] The Key Ingredients to Embracing your True, Authentic Self [02:42 - 17:27] Introducing Dr. Dominique Broussard [17:28 - 38:35] Getting Into Mental Alignment to Be at Our 100% [38:36 - 54:12] Being in Tune With Yourself to Recognize the Signs [54:13 - 56:25] Closing Segment Key Quotes “When we sleep, when we rest, that's our brain, our mind's opportunity to reset and restore.” - Dr. Dominique Broussard “More importantly, when you get enough sleep, when you have enough rest, you're able to show up in all of the spaces that need you with a clear mind.” - Dr. Dominique Broussard “Having that moment to be still really allows yourself that time to process all the thoughts that you might be having. It allows you to clear some of those thoughts. It allows you to get in tune with what you really need in those moments of quiet in those moments of stillness. ” - Dr. Dominique Broussard “If you're not truly in tune with yourself, and you're in that focus of being on the grind, then you might not notice it.” - Dr. Dominique Broussard “When you learn to say no to other people, it also, on the flip side, teaches you to seek consent from other people...so that you can honor other people's boundaries as well.” - Dr. Dominique Broussard Connect with Dr. Dominique Broussard Podcast: Cultivating H.E.R. “I'm sure we're going to have more challenges in life. That's just life. That's how you build your muscle. That's how you graduate and matriculate through this thing called life. Because life is one big lesson until we leave this place, and I will forever be a learner of life. And it's never too late to transform your life.” - Tommi Vincent Welcome to Stay a While with Tommi Vincent! Today I speak with some who will forever have a seat at my table, my husband, Troy Vincent. If life is a test, then the year 2020 is the pop quiz we didn't study for. Through the trials and the wins, one thing that remains steady is our faith. The question is, can you “walk it like you talk it”? When you're being tested, faith plus action are necessary to achieve results. Sometimes you need to hear from someone who has been through the fire and has the medals to prove it. Troy Vincent is the Executive Vice President of Football Operations at the National Football League, beginning his football career as the 7th overall pick in the first round for the Miami Dolphins in the 1992 NFL Draft. After 15 seasons of playing in the league, Troy continues to be nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and has been inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Philadelphia Eagles, the State of Pennsylvania, the University of Wisconsin, and Pennsbury High School. In this episode we cover [01:00 - 04:43] Now That You're at the Table, We're Family [04:44 - 11:01] Getting to Know Troy and Tommi [11:02 - 22:01] Letting Fire Strengthen Your Faith [22:02 - 32:28] Advice For When You're Going Through the Fire [32:29 - 43:10] The Impact That Support Can Have on Our Lives [43:11 - 50:07] Knowing When It's Time To Let Go and Move Forward [50:08 - 53:37] It Is Never Too Late to Transform Your Life [53:58 - 56:12] Closing Segment Key Quotes “This podcast was created to shine a light and be a mirror. My hope is that the seeds and nuggets from my guests will leave a lasting deposit that will manifest a harvest in your life.” - Tommi Vincent “And I think this goes back to the foundation of our relationship. Christ being the center of our relationship so that when we disagree, who we have to answer to is Christ.” - Troy Vincent “I wanted to make sure that the listeners would have an opportunity to walk away from this relationship understanding that the activation of faith is paramount to being able to move through circumstances and situations. We've been through the fire, and we came out without a stench of smoke.” - Tommi Vincent “Just imagine where we would be if we took hold of [faith], and we captured those things, and had full control over it. And we weren't worried about the challenges and the things that haunted us.” - Troy Vincent Connect with Troy Vincent Instagram: @troyvincentsr Facebook: Troy Vincent, Sr Website: https://troyvincent.com Connect with Me!
