JD Doyle historian/author -- Legacy Community Health's Mint Julep -- Normal Anomaly We speak with Houston activist/historian and now author of the book, "1981: My Gay American Road Trip, A Slice of Our Pre-AIDS Culture". 1981. Rich with promise and possibility, the post-Stonewall era saw queer Americans standing up for themselves and each other like never before. With the rise of gay newspapers, bars, clubs, and businesses in cities all over the US, it was a time of hedonism, activism, pride, and community. A scene ripe for exploration and documentation, and journalist JD Doyle hit the road to do just that, traveling through 27 states to create a playful, intimate, profusely illustrated, one-of-a-kind record of gay life, love, lust, and liberation in the heady days before the devastating crisis that would change everything.Guest: JD Doylehttps://www.amazon.com/1981-My-Gay-American-Road-Trip/dp/1943444412/ref=sr_1_1?crid=37O5EHNZ3JFI9&keywords=jd+doyle+1981&qid=1689977274&sprefix=jd+doyle%2Caps%2C111&sr=8-1Then, we speak with Bella Villarreal, Development Manager, about Legacy Community Health's Mint Julep, a fundraiser for Legacy's HIV/AIDS programs in its 21st year. The Normal Anomaly Initiative began in 2016 in Houston as a blog to tell the stories of people at the margins. Throughout the span of 3 years, the Founder, Ian L. Haddock, had the organization working with Huffington Post, Unites States Conference on HIV/ AIDS (USCHA) and Prime Video. The Funky Train from Athens to Ibiza Title is a referenced to the Mikis Theodorakis track (No.6), which I was very happy to drop considering the set was put together at the Nysia Hotel pool (Spetses Island, Greece). A word on the Nissia hotel (http://www.nissia.gr/en). Great place, very good rate for their villas where you can comfortably sleep 6 to 8 people for under 300 EUR B/F included... Why would onenot want to come to Greece? Sun-drenched poolside tunes with some cherry picked re-rub of old tunes and then the start of all the current beach and soulful tunes I have accumulated in the last 4 months. I was listening for the nth times to old offensive covers of old tunes at a sunset bar called Cielo. I begged them to stream The Funky Blackman (Campo Allegre) latest podcast (http://funkyblackman.podomatic.com/entry/2015-07-03T21_29_57-07_00). They finally obliged and the place started grooving… With all the free streaming music around, why on earth would anyone have to endure the same 3 year old crap music on repeat…? Beats me.. At least make an effort and find good remixes of old tunes… Playlist: 2014 Walking On The Moon (J-Art & Madan Remix) [Millesim]. The Police 2013 Josephine (Chris Coco Edit). Disco For The People 2011 We R 1 (U&J's Morning After Mix). U-Ness, JedSet 2009 Find the Way (Jask's Reprise). Ethan White, Lisa Shaw, Jask 2015 Dance (Louie Vega Funk House Dub). 3 Winans Brothers, The Clark Sisters, Louie Vega 2015 The Funky Train Leaves at Eight (From Athens to Ibiza). Mikis Theodorakis, Francesco Diaz 2015 Wide Open (Reel People Vocal Mix). Choklate 2014 Love Is On Its Way (Shane D Remix). Lewis Ferrier, Mavis Acquah 2015 Love Is War (GMGN & Dusty Digital Remix). Vanessa Daou, GMGN And Dusty Digital 2015 Move Me vs My Forbidden Lover (Bootleg SoundCloud Remix). The Checkup & Chic 2013 Do You Feel (Club Edit). Clemens Rumpf, Tony Bravo, Gary Adams, Willy Washington 2014 Free (Lovebirds Beautiful Rework). Lovebirds 2015 Do What You Feel (JN Revival Mix). Joey Negro Highlights: Do not expect underground house music but easy listening orginal poolside tunes. Do not miss the “The Funky Train Leaves at Eight” and actually go on line and by the album.. It is very, very clever. “Wide Open” from Chocklate and the Checkup booty “Move Me vs My Forbidden Lover” are true little gems. The Lovebirds remix of “Free” is not too bad either with a nice cocktail in hand.. Enjoy your poolside mix and I will be back soon, still mixing from beautiful Greece.. where the beach, the sea, the food and the people are still magic! A bientôt Xtian
