Lloyd ‘Bullwackie' Barnes and his legendary Wackie's institution has been at the heart of the dub and reggae scene since the 1970s. Starting out as a tailor to reggae's brightest stars, Bullwackie quickly started working as an engineer at Treasure Isle and Studio One studios in Kingston, Jamaica. On moving to New York with his family he became immersed in the burgeoning reggae and dub scene briefly running his own soundsystem. Bullwackie opened up the first reggae studio in New York, Wackie's House of Music. Since Wackie's was founded in 1976, Bullwackie has produced and released records with the likes of Sugar Minnott, Lee Scratch Perry, The Love Joys, Horace Andy, Max Romeo, Dennis Brown, and - as Zakia discovers - even impromptu sessions with the likes of Mohammed Ali. After enjoying a resurgence of interest in more recent times, following a reissue series via Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald's Basic Channel dub techno label, Wackie's today enjoys multi-generational cult status. In this podcast Zakia and Bullwackie reflect on his life and career, and the exciting discovery of his stolen archive of unreleased Wackie's recordings that Lloyd has recently recovered, and is now in the process of mastering, in some cases nearly 50 years after they were first recorded. Check out the NTS Guide To Wackie'sPresenter - Zakia Sewell, Producer - Lizzy King, Sound Recording - Josh Farmer & Zara Wladawsky, Editing - Femi Oriogun-Williams, Mastering - Felix Stock, Composer - Jennifer Walton, Talent & Outreach - Samuel Strang. My guest today is Randy LeRoy a musician, engineer, A&R, and mastering engineer in Nashville TN and Takoma Park Maryland. A graduate of the recording program at Middle Tennessee State University (also my alma mater) he got his first gig cutting publishing demos on Nashville's “Music Row” in CBS Song's basement studio, editing radio spots on ¼” tape for a company called Starliners and hanging out in small studios around town. Eventually, he was offered a job with CBS Records as an A&R coordinator and spent time in high-end facilities like Emerald, Stargem, The Dog House, Masterfonics, Sound Shop, Treasure Isle, Studio 19, and even legendary studios like The Record Plant in LA while working for CBS. Randy worked with a variety of the label's many noteworthy artists such as Ray Benson, George Jones, Ricky Van Shelton, Tammy Wynette, Vern Gosdin, and Exile. In 1988 Glenn Meadows at Masterfonics offered him a job as his mastering assistant where Randy learned how to cut reference lacquers, assemble and quality checking masters, and help out engineers during mixing, while mastering small projects on his own. At Masterfonics he would work alongside notable country music producers like Jimmy Bowen, Tony Brown, James Stroud, Jerry Crutchfield, and Barry Beckett. And in 1991 Randy left Masterfonics to start his own mastering studio, Final Stage Mastering located in Sound Stage Studios on Music Row in Nashville where he worked on more Grammy nominated and winning projects throughout the 1990s and 2000s such as Relient K's Two Lefts Don't Make A Right… but Three Do, Allison Brown's Fair Weather, Nappy Root's Humdinger, and Jamey Johnson's That Lonesome Song, to name a few. In June of 2010, Randy left Nashville to become the Senior Mastering Engineer at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD where he has mastered some of the biggest names in country, bluegrass, folk, Americana, and gospel such as Jim Lauderdale, Bryan Sutton, Jamey Johnson, Dale Ann Bradley, Colin Hay, Kelsey Waldon, Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, Gold City, and John Cowan. including the 2020 Grammy Winning, Michael Cleveland's “Tall Fiddler” and two other Grammy nominated albums in the Best Bluegrass Album category.

Caribbean Radio Show: Rock Steady -Original Sounds of Duke Reid's Treasure Isle Arthur "Duke" Reid CD (21 July 1915 – 1 January 1975) was a Jamaican record producer, DJ, and label owner. He ran one of the most popular sound systems of the 1950s called Duke Reid's the Trojan after ... the trend towards Rastafarian influenced roots reggae noticeably reduced the number of releases from Treasure Isle. #rocksteady

In 1957 Morgan entered the Vere Johns Opportunity Hour, a talent show held at the Palace Theatre in #Kingston. He won with rousing impressions of Little Richard and, shortly after that, was recruited to perform around the island with the popular Jamaican comedy team Bim and Bam. In 1959 Morgan entered the recording studio for the first time. Duke Reid, the acclaimed sound system boss, was looking for talent to record for his Treasure Isle record label. Morgan cut two popular shuffle-boogie sides "Lover Boy", a.k.a. "S-Corner Rock", and "Oh My". Soon after, Morgan cut the bolero-tinged boogie "Fat Man", which also became a hit. He also found time to record for Coxsone Dodd. In 1960 Morgan became the only artist ever to fill the places from one to seven on the Jamaican pop chart simultaneously. Among those hits were "Don't Call Me Daddy", "In My Heart", "Be Still", and "Meekly Wait and Murmur Not". But it was the following year that Morgan released the biggest hit of his career, the Leslie Kong production of "Don't You Know", later retitled "Housewives' Choice" by a local #DJ. The song featured a bouncing #ska riddim, along with a duet by Morgan and Millicent "Patsy" Todd.

Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia? Lydia The Tattooed Lady. She has eyes that folks adore so, and a torso even more so. Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia. Oh Lydia The Queen of Tattoo. On her back is The Battle of Waterloo. Beside it, The Wreck of the Hesperus too. And proudly above waves the red, white, and blue. You can learn a lot from Lydia! La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. When her robe is unfurled she will show you the world, if you step up and tell her where. For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paree, or Washington crossing The Delaware. La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. Oh Lydia, oh Lydia, say, have you met Lydia? Lydia The Tattooed Lady. When her muscles start relaxin', up the hill comes Andrew Jackson. Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia. Oh Lydia The Queen of them all. For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz, with a view of Niagara that nobody has. And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz. You can learn a lot from Lydia! La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. Come along and see Buffalo Bill with his lasso. Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso. Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon. Here's Godiva, but with her pajamas on. La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. Here is Grover Whelan unveilin' The Trilon. Over on the west coast we have Treasure Isle-on. Here's Nijinsky a-doin' the rhumba. Here's her social security numba. La-la-la...la-la-la. La-la-la...la-la-la. Lydia, oh Lydia, that encyclo-pidia. Oh Lydia The Champ of them all. She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet. The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat. And now the old boy's in command of the fleet, for he went and married Lydia! I said Lydia... (He said Lydia...) They said Lydia... We said Lydia, la, la!

Buster quickly released "Blackhead Chiney Man", chiding Morgan with the sarcastic put-down, "I did not know your parents were from Hong Kong" – a swipe at Kong. Morgan returned with the classic "Blazing Fire", in which he warns Buster to "Live and let others live, and your days will be much longer.

But it was the following year that Morgan released the biggest hit of his career, the Leslie Kong production of "Don't You Know", later retitled "Housewives' Choice" by a local DJ. The song featured a bouncing ska riddim, along with a duet by Morgan and Millicent "Patsy" Todd. "Housewives' Choice" began the legendary rivalry between Morgan and Prince Buster, who accused Morgan of stealing his ideas.

Winston Jarrett 1940)is a Jamaican reggae singer who was part of Alton Ellis's group The Flames in the 1960s before recording with The Righteous Flames and as a solo artist. Born in 1940 in Lime Tree Gardens, Saint Ann Parish, Jarrett grew up in the Jones Town area of Kingston after moving there with his mother at the age of five. There, he was taught to play guitar by Jimmy Cliff and Alton Ellis. Jarrett's introduction to the music industry was as a member of Alton Ellis's backing band The Flames in the early 1960s, formed when Ellis's original singing partner Eddie Perkins emigrated to the US, singing on hits such as "Dancecrasher", "Cry Tough", "Rocksteady" and "Girl I've Got a Date". While with Ellis he wrote songs such as "Sunday Coming" and "True Born African". In 1967, Jarrett parted ways with the UK-bound Ellis and with fellow Flame Edgar "Egga" Gardner formed The Righteous Flames with Junior Green, and the trio recorded for Arthur "Duke" Reid's Treasure Isle label and then for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio Onelabel. In 1969 recorded for Lee "Scratch" Perry ("Zion I Love You"). In 1970s, tired of recording for others without receiving adequate payment, Jarrett self-produced much of his output, releasing it on his own Attra, Human Rights and Humble labels. Jarrett recorded as a solo artist in the late 1970s and 1980s, releasing the Wise Man album in 1979 and Rocking Vibration in 1984. He re-formed the Flames, releasing the album Jonestown in the late 1980s, and in the early 1990s recorded a tribute album to Bob Marley, also featuring Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer.

Trevor McNaughton had the idea of putting a group together and contacted the then fourteen year old Lloyd Brevett, who had already had success in local talent shows.[1] Brevett recruited his friend Brent Dowe and the group was formed, with Brevett taking on lead vocal duties.[1] Bramwell Brown and Ranford Cogle also had short stints in the group in its early days, and Cogle became one of the group's main songwriters.[1] The group recorded some material with Prince Buster before Ken Boothe introduced them to Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label where in 1966 they recorded "Lay It On" (one of the first records to reflect the shift from ska to rocksteady), "Meet Me", "I Should Have Made It Up" and "Let's Join Hands (Together)".[1] Lead vocal duties were now shared between Brevett and Dowe.[1] From 1967 to 1968 they had a number of hits on Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label, including "You Have Caught Me", "Expo 67", "I'll Get Along Without You", and "You Don't Need Me".[1] After recording "Swing and Dine" for record producer Sonia Pottinger, they had further hits with "Little Nut Tree" before recording their biggest hit, "Rivers of Babylon" for Leslie Kong.[1] This song became an anthem of the Rastafarian movement, and was featured on the soundtrack for the movie, The Harder They Come.[2] In the early 1970s Brevett also recorded as a solo artist, having his greatest success with "Don't Get Weary".[1] After Kong's death in 1971, they recorded for Lee Perry and Byron Lee's Dynamic Studios. In 1973, Brent Dowe left the group for a solo career. The group reformed briefly a few years later, and again in the early 1980s.

He entered the music industry in 1962 reggae singer Derrick Morgan, landing a job as a record plugger for Duke Reid's famed Treasure Isle label. By the mid-'60s, Lee was working with Ken Lack's Caltone imprint, producing his first record, Lloyd Jackson & the Groovers' "Listen to the Beat," in 1967. His first significant hit, Roy Shirley's "Music Field," followed later that year on WIRL, and found his own label, he reeled off a series of well-received sides including Morgan's "Hold You Jack," Slim Smith's "My Conversation," and Pat Kelly's "Little Boy Blue. more at http://www.artistdirect.com/artist/bio/bunny-lee/457546#f93D4JygXQ7DmG0k.99 LOVE TRULY brings you incredible R&B and Pop music,Love grew up in Texas, U.S.A listening to the music of Billy Ocean, Jonathan Butler, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, The Bee Gees, Christopher Cross, Steve Perry, Pattie Labelle, Hall and Oates, Air supply and many other artist who he feels "captures the true meaning of love in their music" as he has said many times on numerous interviews.Love Truly is also a man who has a genuine heart and cares about the issues of the world that stem from poverty, abuse of women and children, world hunger, childhood diseases, breast cancer and many other issues that he says he would love to bring attention to as his name and brand grows larger. www.crsradio.com call 661-467-2407 (c) all rights reserved
