I have always considered myself to be culturally curious. Since I was younger there was always a draw to lean in and learn others stories. Identifying different traditions in the lives of those around me always struck me as an invitation to a whole new world, and deeper connection.  As we dive more into parenthood, I have been thinking a lot recently about how I can raise Wesley to be just as curious, and intentional with getting to know the stories of those at our table. A few years ago I heard Trillia Newbell speak at a Thinq Media Conference that we were attending, and I remember that she communicated with authority, invitation to action and that her words, though powerful, landed softly. When I was given the opportunity to host a conversation with her surrounding her new book, Celebrating Around The Table, the answer was an easy yes. Through this book and conversation Trillia will lead us through topics like: How to raise culturally curious kids What intentional living means as a family Resources on reflecting on black history month for all ages Recipes that celebrate her rich cultural background and how they are used to enhance her families cultural celebration Trillia and I laughed and reflected throughout this whole conversation, and we invite you to join us wherever you listen to podcasts. Buy your own copy of Trillia's book hereFollow Trillia @trillianewbell Purchase a copy of the book that Trillia references in the episode: The art of self forgetfulnessThis Episode is Sponsored By: Feast & Fettle get $25 off your first week of hand crafted, flavor packed meals delivered straight to your door so you can soak up the season with code GATHER25 at checkout Watch our Youtube episodes here!

The food and traditions our families have are so important. Jesus told stories and disciples around the table with his followers. You may noticed there are so many themed cookbooks that are out there to inspire and disciple us into things like "The World of Hogwarts" or "Gillmore Girls." Trillia has done something really neat. She's taken the stories of Black heroes of faith and combined it with discipleship and mouth-watering recipes! To make learning history a joy!  How have stories of your family and how food has played a role in that?  I come from a different culture. You've said, "Knowledge doesn't equal understanding." But how does taking time to dive into things that bring joy give better understanding? It's wild so many kids hate history. How have you used food to change that for your family?  Do you have some favorite heroes of faith? How have they impacted you? How have you found food drawing people in, especially your kids? How do we use that for discipleship?  I've linked Trillia's book "Celebrate Around the Table" and you can find her HERE on Instagram. Do you catch yourself being more prideful than you'd like to admit? Pride is a difficult battle for all of us, and today Trillia Newbell and Natalie Abbott help us learn from Scripture how we can war well against pride. Looking at John the Baptist's famous words in John 3:30, they walk us through their own struggles with pride, why John the Baptist was able to say what he did about Jesus, and the freedom awaiting us when we worship the Lord for who he is and see ourselves as he sees us: covered in Jesus's righteousness. This month's memory verse: “He must become greater; I must become less.” — John 3:30Today's Dwell guest:  Trillia Newbell is the author of several books including A Great Cloud of Witnesses, Sacred Endurance, If God Is For Us, Fear and Faith, and the children's books, Creative God, Colorful Us and  God's Very Good Idea. “I want to help parents engage further with their children about what it means to welcome and love the way Jesus does.” Today we hear from Trillia Newbell about her children's book, The Big Wide Welcome. She brings to our attention the sin of partiality or favoritism and how important it is for us as parents to check our own hearts in order to model this for our children. Kids will learn that Christians and churches are called to be like Jesus, fully welcoming people so they can come to know the Good News.   ABOUT OUR GUEST Trillia Newbell is the author of several books including 52 Weeks in the Word, A Great Cloud of Witnesses, Sacred Endurance, If God Is For Us, and the children's books, The Big Wide Welcome, Creative God, Colorful Us and God's Very Good Idea. You can find her at trillianewbell.com and follow her on Instagram at @trillianewbell.    SCRIPTURES Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14 NIV My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, doesn't this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives? James 2:1-4 NLT Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law. James 2:8-9 NLT The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:7-10 NIV   BOOK BY TRILLIA NEWBELL The Big Wide Welcome LINK Trillia Newbell   MOMS IN PRAYER ·       New to Moms in Prayer? Let's have some “real talk” and think about our faith in action when it comes to our neighbors, even when they are different. This conversation will help you think about being more open and welcoming and train your children to do the same. Our guest this week, author Trillia Newbell, encourages us in the message of James chapter two - love for others that doesn't show favoritism to those who look or think or act like us. Her book, The Big Wide Welcome, illustrates how the love of Christ sees and welcomes others for who they are and how we should do the same. Trillia is a wife, mom, author, and speaker whose writings address and encourage our faith, our families, and the culture around us  Connect with Trillia Newbell:  Website:  https://trillianewbell.com  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TrilliaNewbell  Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/trillianewbell/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/trillianewbell  Links Mentioned:   The Big Wide Welcome by Trillia J.
