A Conversation on Bible Study, Spiritual Highs, and Faithfulness with Trillia Newbell During this episode, we are learning how to invite God to challenge our preconceived notions of who He is and what He's doing.JOSHUA 5:13-15 ESVWhen Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” 14 And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” 15 And the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.MEET TRILLIA NEWBELLTrillia Newbell is the author of several books including, A Great Cloud of Witnesses, Sacred Endurance, If God Is For Us, Fear and Faith, and the children's books, Creative God, Colorful Us and God's Very Good Idea. Christian Pluralism: Living Faithfully in a World of DifferenceThe term ‘pluralism' has been subject to misunderstanding – even misuse – over the past several years. Some read or hear the word and think simply of a multiplicity of opinions. Others think of a sort of moral relativism that affirms your truth and my truth, no matter how contradictory they may be. Others still may think of this as some sort of squishy interfaith unity that denies matters of ultimate importance. In a conversation with John Inazu, Trillia Newbell, and Michael Wear we dive into the meaning of pluralism and how it is that Christians in particular can live faithfully amidst a world of difference. These careful writers and thinkers help us begin to grasp a more robust vision for Christian pluralism:“We are all actually called to be reconcilers. Any one of us who have professed faith in Jesus Christ, we are called to a ministry of reconciliation. That means a proclamation of the gospel. So sharing the good news of Jesus Christ to the world around me, to my neighbors, to my friends...I believe that the greatest love that we can extend to others is Jesus.” - Trillia NewbellWe hope you're inspired by this conversation about hope, justice, faithfulness, and love, even in the midst of change, challenge, and conflict. This podcast is an edited version of an evening conversation recorded in 2020. Pride is a difficult battle for all of us, and today Trillia Newbell and Natalie Abbott help us learn from Scripture how we can war well against pride. Looking at John the Baptist's famous words in John 3:30, they walk us through their own struggles with pride, why John the Baptist was able to say what he did about Jesus, and the freedom awaiting us when we worship the Lord for who he is and see ourselves as he sees us: covered in Jesus's righteousness. This month's memory verse: “He must become greater; I must become less.” — John 3:30Today's Dwell guest: Trillia Newbell is the author of several books including A Great Cloud of Witnesses, Sacred Endurance, If God Is For Us, Fear and Faith, and the children's books, Creative God, Colorful Us and God's Very Good Idea. She brings to our attention the sin of partiality or favoritism and how important it is for us as parents to check our own hearts in order to model this for our children. Kids will learn that Christians and churches are called to be like Jesus, fully welcoming people so they can come to know the Good News. SCRIPTURES Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matthew 19:14 NIV My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, doesn't this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives? James 2:1-4 NLT Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law. James 2:8-9 NLT The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:7-10 NIV BOOK BY TRILLIA NEWBELL The Big Wide Welcome LINK Trillia Newbell MOMS IN PRAYER · New to Moms in Prayer? On the sixth episode of the Family Discipleship Podcast the hosts (Adam Griffin, Cassie Bryant, and Chelsea Griffin) talk with a special guest, Trillia Newbell, about talking with your family about race and diversity and what it has to do with spiritual leadership. Trillia is an author and speaker in Nashville TN. To learn more about Trillia you can follow her on instagram @trillianewbell and find out more about her ministry at http://www.trillianewbell.com/. Questions we asked Trillia in this episode:What inspired the writing of your children's books about race and diversity? Were you itching to write them or did someone else ask you to do it? In “God's Very Good Idea” you say “Everyone you see is different than you, and the same as you.” You're teaching about the image of God in diverse people. Why is this important for Christian parents to be teaching their kids? How is racial diversity a family discipleship issue? One of the questions you ask kids to consider in “Creative God Colorful Us” is “Why do you think it's important to love those who don't look or sound like you?” Can you answer that question for us? Why is that important for our kids? Can you think of examples in the Newbell home where race has been a difficult issue to navigate as you and your husband lead your home? For a lot of parents, racial tension or division in the news is a hard thing to talk about even with their peers. What wisdom could you offer our listeners on processing racism spiritually with their families? What do you say to the parent who is raising kids in a homogenous neighborhood, church, and school? How can they help their family see the beauty in diversity? Racism and prejudice are sinful, we see that in God's word. Why do you think parents have such an easier time addressing sins like selfishness, anger, impatience, and lust with our children than we do with addressing prejudice and partiality? If you could go back to when your first child was born and give yourself one piece of advice about the Newbell family's spiritual life, what would you say? I'm curious about how this conversation has changed in your house for your kids as they reach different ages. You wrote books for different levels, what have the different levels of conversations on this topic looked like in your house? Is there any scripture that you or your family can point to that has been a guide to you in how you've led your home spiritually around issues of race and diversity? Before we let you go, would you mind sharing with us, what are the prayers you have for your kids right now? If our listeners want to pray for the Newbells, what can they ask God for on your behalf? Some of our favorite quotes from Trillia Newbell in this episode:Either you're going to be teaching your children or the culture is going to be teaching your children and we have a choice. So we want to be engaged in what the bible says about people because the world has a different message. We have good, good news. It is good to know that we are all equal in the sight of God. That God has created us all to reflect him. Every person walking this earth has value and worth. It is essential that we are instilling that into our children...It's of utmost importance, because if we don't teach them that foundation, how are we going to then teach them about love? There is evidence of a transformed heart by the way we look and interact with people. It is of utmost importance that we understand that God has created us and that we are commanded to love people who don't look like us or sound like us. It's really a foundation of the faith. If you are seeing racism on the news, one thing I wish that we'd all do is learn how to weep with those weep and mourn with those who mourn...We make everything about division or politics when really as families we need to shepherd their hearts and teach them how to pray and how to mourn.I felt valuable because my parents told me I was and no one could take that away. There are so many kids who are walking wounded because of the color of their skin. You have to make the effort to be intentional to enjoy different cultures. You're not gonna address something with your kids that you haven't addressed in your own heart. It's really difficult if you haven't said, “Ok Lord, where have I failed here? I confess. I repent.”...Parents have to do the hard work of really evaluating their own hearts. We can be apathetic about this topic. If it doesn't affect me personally then it doesn't affect me at all. One of the things I realized really early on is that I cannot save my kids. That burden has been lifted. Today we have on children's minister, author, and founder of Little Shoots, Deep Roots, Christie Thomas. Christie is a woman who is passionate about equipping families to engage their hearts with the Gospel. Her children's books give amazing verbiage for how to deal with big issues in the lives of children, which is so helpful in general, but especially now living in a season that is full of such uncertainty that our children experience in their worlds too. Christie's latest book is a Mother Son Prayer Journal. As a mother of several young boys, Christie shares about the challenge of raising young men to be God chasers who practice repentance, humility, strength, respect for others, how to go to God with the good things and the bad things, and remembering God is the One who is faithful and who holds all things together. Christie's method in all she does in her ministry and her writing is to take things back to small steps that sow Truth. In a world where we as adults are often trying to find quick ways to handle more, this is such a good reminder to slow down, and focus on the small, but mighty. While we're doing that, we can more clearly see it's God that holds all things together and we can point the kids in our lives to do the same. One of my biggest takeaways from talking with Christie was just how much little habits make a huge difference in so many aspects of life, but especially in parenting and communicating about the Gospel. We also dive into how men and women can partner in spiritually leading and nurturing a home. Christie points out that as Christians we are called to make disciples. As followers of Christ and parents; that includes our children. We discuss what discipleship from both parents may look like in a manner that honors God, and compliments how every parent and every partnership is uniquely and wonderfully made. I hope this will be an encouraging episode for those of us out there trying to figure out how to respond to the world around us as adults, let alone how to communicate about it with littles, but ultimately I hope this helps point you to Jesus, and remind you He is trustworthy no matter where you are. You matter. Your story matters. --- Connecting with Christie: Facebook Instagram // LSDR Instagram Website Episode Sponsor: Hopefuel Use the code SIMPLY15 at check out for 15% off your purchase Store (Affiliate link) Facebook Instagram References: Little Shoots, Deep Roots Wise for Salvation Quinn's Promise Rock Quinn Says Goodbye Momma Son Prayer Journal The Bible Recap - Book and Podcast John Mark's mother's home is the house where people were gathered when people were praying for Peter, also possibly where the last supper was held Building Faith at Home The original form of Proverbs 31 is an acrostic poem Erin Moon's response to the funky woman tweet The Bible Binge How you can start little from her website “Raise A Hallelujah” - Bethel “I Thank God” Maverick City Music Trillia Newbell's childrens' books: God's Very Good Idea and Creative God, Colorful Us Dorena Williamson's books: Colorfull, Thoughtfull, Gracefull, Pre-Orders!: The Celebration Place and Crowned with Glory The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross - Carl Laferton Phil Vischer videos VeggieTales Right Now Media When a student followed a rabbi, they followed them so closely “The Chosen” Scripture: Colossians 1:17- God holds all things together Job 1:21- God gives and takes away John 11:38-44- Jesus at Lazarus' tomb Luke 18:18-30, 1 Corinthians 13:12-, Ephesians 2:6-9, 1 Timothy 6:18-19- The kingdom is only partly here Psalm 27:13-14, Job 13:15, Daniel 3:17-18, Romans 8:28 -When everything hurts God is still good Isaiah 41:10, Hebrews 13:5-6, Psalm 23-God is still near Psalm 34:10, Matthew 7:11, Luke 12:24, John 14:26, 1 Corinthians 10:13, 2 Corinthians 9:8, Philippians 4:19- God is still providing John 16:33, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Psalm 23 -God comforts us Psalm 30:1-5, Psalm 30:11-12- Joy does come in the mourning Isaiah 40:11- carries a lamb on his shoulders 1 and 2 Samuel - life of David (Bible Project's video on these books are super helpful) 1 and 2 Chronicles - life of David (Bible Project's video on these books are super helpful) The Psalms (Bible Project) 1 Samuel 17- David & Goliath Amos (Bible Project again ;)) 1 Chronicles 13- David tries to go get the ark and it doesn't go well 1 Samuel 18-30- especially 27-29- David the land pirate (bad news bears) 1 Samuel 13:14,Acts 13:22 - God calls David to be a man after His own heart Proverbs 22:6, Romans 10:14-15, Titus 2:3, I have to learn to help them recognize His voice 1 Corinthians 11:3-16, Ephesians 5:21-33- The man is head of the household Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8, 2 Timothy 2:2- We're called to make disciples 2 Timothy 1:5- Lois and Eunice and Timothy Acts 12:1-17- Peter escapes prison and comes to believers praying 1 Kings 11:1-2- Do not marry a Moabite woman. In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day yesterday we read the fabulous book God's Very Good Idea by Trillia Newbell and illustrated by Catalina Echeverri and then listened to Dr. King's powerful "I Have A Dream" speech. I talked with my kids about God and how He created us all in His image and He created us to love each other, even in ways we are different. My podcast is not political and I do not have a hidden agenda. It is simply about what my husband and I are teaching our kids about who God is, who He created us to be, and His plan for us. Grounded in the truth and hope of God’s Word, we press into hard conversations asking, listening, and learning about experiences beyond our own to gain a deeper understanding from our marginalized brothers and sisters in faith. We commit to learning individually and collectively from Scripture, each other, and other resources that speak directly to racial issues, inequalities, and injustices. We will use our voices in our circles of influence to speak the truth to policies, institutions, and individuals concerning racism. Finally, we recognize our utter dependence on God’s grace and strength for this journey in seeking to walk together more effectively, and that His Glory through His son Jesus is our greatest calling.
Jim Davis and Justin Holcomb welcome Trillia Newbell to talk about some of the unique relational dynamics facing black women. Newbell covers being racially profiled as well as many false stereotypes and the exhaustion that black women face as they navigate others’ expectations and perceptions. Newbell shares that the painful or awkward moments in the world also exist in the church, yet there is hope that springs out of lament, having faith in a good God. The three discuss:An introduction to Trillia Newbell (1:02)Coming to faith in a “holiday Christian” home (2:18)Common challenges Black women face in our culture (6:45)Picking her battles (9:53)Facing down unfair assumptions (13:19)False stereotypes of Black women (17:51)Stereotypes mirrored in the church (23:58)A Christian response to stereotypes (28:42)Parenting through racial stereotypes (33:15)Creative God, Colorful Us (36:35)Explore more from TGC on the topic of race.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:Have you ever caught yourself thinking of any of the stereotypes of black women in your mind? What kind of emotions come to mind if other people judged a whole group of people by your individual speech, personality, or actions? Were you surprised that all of the same awkward or painful moments experienced outside the church were also experienced inside the church? Why or why not?Can you imagine the cumulative weight of the expectations, stereotypes, perceptions, and awkward or painful interactions over time? This was our first Pop Up Podcast that we recorded back in March, but due to some logistical issues, we are only getting to produce and share it now! We are so excited to invite you to listen in as we chat with our guest, Mosel Royer and discuss issues of the heart around racism and how to respond in relationship to the realities of racial dynamics making headlines in America. Mosel and her family have been part of the the DOVE International family of churches, serving and leading in various capacities for over 20 years. She is an amazing friend, and talks with us today from her experiences as a black American woman. Our heart was to talk together about how to find unity in the body of Christ and love one another well.Special thanks to Merle Shenk for coming out to set up our Pop Up Podcast, and to Jordan Sitler and Ron Myer.Links mentioned in today's Podcast.Children's Book Resources for your Family:God Made Me and You: Celebrating God's Design for Ethnic Diversity by Shai Linnehttps://www.christianbook.com/made-celebrating-gods-design-ethnic-diversity/shai-linne/9781948130134/pd/8130134God's Very Good Idea by Trillia Newbellhttps://www.christianbook.com/gods-very-good-idea/trillia-newbell/9781784982218/pd/982218YouTube link to a discussion about Race & the Church by Transform Church. How can parents best engage conversations about race with their kids? As the author of the children’s book God’s Very Good Idea, Trillia Newbell helps children and families learn to celebrate diversity, see how people from all ethnic and social backgrounds are valuable to God and understand how Jesus came to rescue all kinds of people. In this episode, Trillia points us toward theologically faithful, culturally smart and practical ways for us to teach our kids these important truths.
There is a lot of pain and turmoil throughout our nation for our black and brown brothers and sisters. I've been wrestling with it, trying to be still and listen as I continue to learn. I've been having conversations with friends who are gracious to share their experiences with me. As a white adoptive mom of brown and black kids, I know that I have an added responsibility to prepare my kids for what culture may say to them. I realize that I can't speak to them from my personal experience on this specific issue, which is difficult for me. I already hurt for them with the pain and loss they experience surrounding their adoptions, and knowing that they may also be affected by racism hurts. I'm thankful for tools like Trillia Newbell's children's book, God's Very Good Idea, that help me frame our conversations around God's truth. In our conversation together, and in her book, Trillia centers her thoughts about race and diversity around God, his good designs for people, where it all went wrong, and why there is still hope.
HOW CAN CHRISTIANS TODAY INTERACT with others in a way that shows respect to those whose beliefs are radically different, both inside and outside of the church? Head of School Christan Perona moderates a discussion between John Inazu, co-editor of Uncommon Ground and Trillia Newbell, contributing writer and Acquisitions Editor at Moody Publishers, to answer this very question.Together, John and Trillia:-- Help us think about how to engage others despite differences-- Lay a practical framework for healthy engagement as we consider the 2020 Presidential election-- Move us towards healthy conversation regarding other issues; COVID-19, racial tension, and current conflicts-- Challenge us toward mature discipleship that's manifested through humility, patience, and tolerance-- Empower us to lead others outside of our school in our various spheres of influence (work, church, communities, extended families) (Recorded in Zoom, the video version of this conversation can be seen on our YouTube channel.) #election #2020election #trillianewbell #johninazu RESOURCES:Uncommon Ground, co-edited by John Inazu and Tim KellerConfident Pluralism by John InazuGod's Very Good Idea by Trillia NewbellOther books by Trillia Newbell
In this episode, I chatted with Trillia Newbell about how we can respond biblically to hurtful comments in the wake of loss (both inwardly and outwardly). We talked about why well intended comments are often so painful, and talked about responses like assuming the best, walking away, and even offering a strong rebuke to uphold God’s truth and protect the next woman. Trillia shared two personal examples of hurtful comments she received and how she responded and we even walked through how to handle to a few specific common responses to miscarriage. I pray that you would walk away from listening to this episode feeling seen by God and more equipped for your next awkward or painful encounter. About Trillia Newbell: Trillia Newbell is the author of several books including A Great Cloud of Witnesses, Sacred Endurance, If God Is For Us, Fear and Faith, and the children’s book, God’s Very Good Idea. When she isn’t writing, she’s encouraging and supporting other writers as an Acquisitions Editor at Moody Publishers. Trillia is married to her best friend, Thern, they reside with their two children near Nashville, TN. You can find her at trillianewbell.com and follow her on twitter at @trillianewbell. Questions in this Episode: Would you start off by just telling us a bit about your own experience with miscarriage? I’m curious to know, why do you think so many of the responses people offer to women walking through the pain of pregnancy loss land in such a raw place? Why are so many of these attempts to be helpful actually so unhelpful? How does the truth of the gospel and God’s word bring comfort when we are met with a lack of sensitivity or understanding from others? How should the truth of the gospel and God’s word inform the way we respond to hurtful or unhelpful responses from others? How can we practically prepare for these comments/ interactions in a way that both guards our hearts and helps us not to sin against our neighbors in our anger and pain? Let’s walk through some common comments and maybe you can help us think through how we might respond. “I don’t understand why you’re making such a big deal out of this.” “At least you weren’t very far along.” “At least you know you can get pregnant.” “Better it didn’t survive. This is just your body’s way of getting rid of a defective baby.” Questions for every guest: What’s one way God has used your experience of miscarriage to work in your heart and life? If you could encourage a woman to meditate on or memorize any verse or short set of verses in this season, what would it be and why? Growth and change doesn't happen with information alone, but when information is reflected on a put into practice. Often there's a gap between what we hear on Sunday mornings and how we live the rest of the week. We believe the missing link is an opportunity to reflect.Parents are buys. Sometimes, even with the best intentions, they are only able to hear bits and pieces from the sermon. And even when they are able to listen, after the service all they hear is "I'm hungry!" and "What's for lunch?" so their minds quickly switch to lunch. That's where this podcast comes in! We sit around a table and reflect on the past Sunday's sermon, seeing where we can apply God's Word into our lives and into our homes as we seek to raise up Christ-followers in our families and in our communities. This week we talk about how each and every person is created in God's image. Sometimes we need to be reminded that the stranger is created in God's image. Sometimes we need to be reminded that those closest to us are created in God's image. And sometimes we need to be reminded that we are created in God's image. The book that Stacy and I mentioned is "God's Very Good Idea" by Trillia Newbell: https://amzn.to/31aIWOWAnd if you'd like to share a prayer request or connect with us, you can email: trinityfremontpodcast@gmail.com

What does it mean to talk to our kids about race? What does it mean to engage in conversations of justice, race and privilege, in the context of diversity? How do we approach these conversations with our kids even when it's hard? What if we don't know what to say? On Episode 105, we interview Cara Meredith about talking to your kids about racism and racial justice. In This Episode, You Will Hear About: How to talk about racism with your children and teens, even if you don't know what to say The importance of diverse children's literature in your home Resources to help you and your children continue to learn and talk about racism Resources Mentioned During the Episode: Some of Cara Meredith's recommendations for diverse children's literature (including books for tweens and younger teens): God's Dream by Desmond Tutu God's Very Good Idea by Trillia Newbell The World Is Awake by Linsey Davis Listening With My Heart by Gabi Garcia A full list of Cara's recommended diverse children's literature A full list of Cara's diverse children's literature Recommended Reading List Pick up a copy of Cara Meredith's book, The Color of Life: A Journey Toward Love and Racial Justice Resources to learn more about racism (for older teens and adults) Be The Bridge: Pursuing God's Heart for Racial Reconciliation by Latasha Morrison The Color of Compromise by Jemar Tisby I'm Still Here by Austin Channing Brown Just Mercy by Byan Stevenson The study that Cara mentions about how children as young as 6 months old can distinguish someone of a different race Prophetic Lament: A Call For Justice In Troubled Times by Soong Chen-Ra Quotes and Tweets: Children are not colorblind. @caramac54 When talking to your kids about racism, start where you are at. If something is on the news, talk about it. @caramac54 I fight for racial justice because systemic racism toward back and brown lives still exists. But my marching is for a justice and a wholeness and peace that are also mine. When I allow redemption to take hold of me, I can't help but want this redemption for everyone. @caramac54 We had to learn how to hold the oppressor and honor the oppressed, for love can redeem everything, including both the oppressor and the oppressed. We had to enter the fullness of lament. @caramac54 It's a matter of mothers and fathers everywhere, of flesh and blood, of adoption and circumstance, embracing each and every one of our children. @caramac54 No longer do we ignore the suffering and pain and death of others, but with compassion as our only sword, we listen and we enter in to heartache. @caramac54 Fighting for justice isn't something we do for others, but it' something we do for ourselves. @caramac54 Subscribe and Connect With Us: Apple Podcasts Spotify Stitcher Google Podcasts Google Play Instagram - @imbetweenshow Twitter - @imbetweenshow Facebook - @imbetweenshow Pinterest - @imbetweenshow YouTube - @imbetweenpodcast And don't forget to subscribe to our podcast, so that you will never miss an episode! _________________________________________________________________ Meet Cara Meredith: Cara Meredith is a writer and speaker whose work has appeared in numerous publications, including Christianity Today, iBelieve, and For Every Mom. All people, including the color of their skin, are made in the image of God. Though sin marred God’s original design, it did not change the fact that mankind still bears God’s image. Sin does not change the God-given value equally given to all of His image bearers. However, sin does cause this God-given value to be unequally acknowledged and experienced. There are image bearers that are devalued, abused, and murdered because of the color of their skin. This grieves the heart of God, and it ought to grieve the heart of His people when any of His image bearers are not treated with dignity and love. Today, we approach this topic of racial injustice from a position of humility, not authority. We are not experts. We are not black; we don’t know what it is like to be black in America. Our understanding of the social injustice experienced by black image bearers is limited. However, these are not reasons to be silent. The gospel compels us to speak up against racism and social injustice. The gospel compels us to act toward anti-racism and racial reconciliation. We believe God hates sin, and racism is sin. As people reconciled to God through Christ, we have been entrusted the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18). While we lament the brokenness of this world, we commit to listening, learning, and loving. This week on the Adorned Podcast we begin our study of The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ longest recorded sermon. In His teaching, Jesus answers the question “what is a good life or what is human flourishing?” On episode 75 we cover the first part of chapter 5, which is known as the “beatitudes.” The beatitudes are not a band, as Erin once believed, but they are short statements that start with “blessed” and they summarize the essence of The Sermon on the Mount. Join us as we continue to see Jesus paint this picture of what it looks like to live as a follower of Him. Quotes: “True human flourishing is only available through communion with the Father God through his revealed Son, Jesus, as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit. This flourishing is only experienced through faithful, heart-deep, whole-person discipleship, following Jesus’ teachings and life, which situate the disciple into God’s community or kingdom. This flourishing will only be experienced fully in the eschaton, when God finally establishes his reign upon the earth. As followers of Jesus journey through their lives, they will experience suffering in this world, which in God’s providence is in fact a means to true flourishing even now” -Jonathan T. Pennington “The first 4 beatitudes are where our faith takes root and the last 4 are how it bears fruit” -Jen Wilkin In reference to being poor in spirit - “ It is the conscious acknowledgement of unworth before God, the deepest form of repentance.” -D.A. On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, I chatted with Trillia Newbell about celebrating diversity! Trillia and I talked about everything from how we can practically celebrate people of all backgrounds, to how Jesus himself loved people who were different than him. She said, “When I think of Jesus I think of a man who died for sinners, who died for those who could never repay him, and who related to those who others would shun. His example is ours. It’s what we should aim to live like and live for.” Trillia encourages us to simply love our neighbors and to seek to know them through something as simple as inviting them to share a meal around our tables. Ultimately, we discussed God’s plan to glorify himself by rescuing a people from every tribe, tongue, and nation. I know you’ll have so many takeaways from this conversation. So you’ll know her a little better, Trillia Newbell is the author of the kids’ book God’s Very Good Idea, as well as Enjoy: Finding the Freedom to Delight Daily in God’s Good Gifts (2016), Fear and Faith: Finding the Peace Your Heart Craves (2015) and United: Captured by God’s Vision for Diversity (2014). Today, she joins us to talk about what kids can do when they are sad. There are so many great passages in Scripture that we can run to when we feel sad - and it should be a great encouragement that even Jesus felt sad! Jesus is God, who came as a baby and grew and experienced life just as we do. He was sad, hungry, tempted, happy, and tired. He understands, and today He sits at the right hand of the Father interceding for us before God. Listen in to hear more.

Trillia talks about a time that her son asked her to draw Kung Fu Panda, reminds us to celebrate God's goodness to us and also to be generous with what we do have, and to be in God's Word daily because it is truly the bread of life. She talks about her struggle with fear, specifically fear of man, and ways she's tackled that in her life. And she shares her passion for us all to know and see the Imago Dei (the image of God) in every person and the children's book she's written to help us do a better job of that for ourselves and our kids. Do you ever get overwhelmed with how to talk to your young kids about hard topics? I have been there. And sometimes, I actually disengage or ignore important topics because it feels too hard. I don't want to say the wrong thing at the wrong time.Diversity is one of those topics that matters. It matters to God and it matters to me. Trillia Newbell is the perfect guest for this conversation. She was looking for a resource to guide her discussions with our own kids and couldn't find it. So, she wrote “God's Very Good Idea” to center the discussion of diversity around the gospel. In this chat, we also discuss another hard topic with our kids - bullying and loneliness. We talk about the importance of friendship for our kids and how we can turn our kids to Jesus in these moments. My favorite part is when Trillia reminds us that the teaching is coming. Either culture is going to teach our kids or we need to get ahead of that messaging. It's so very important that we frame tough topics with a biblical point of view and Trilia helps us do that so well.In this episode, we discuss:How to teach our kids about diversity from a biblical perspective How to discern between bullying and unkindness How to invite God into your loneliness Connect with Pardon The Mess:Christian ParentingPardon The Mess Courtney DeFeoResources from today's show:Jesus and the Gift of Friendship - Trillia's new bookGod's Very Good Idea (and other books) by TrilliaConnect with Trillia NewbellOur Sponsors:* Check out Armoire and use my code MESS for a great deal: http://www.armoire.style* Check out Puro Air : https://getpuroair.com/* Visit HomeThreads.com/MESS today and get a 15% off code for your first order!Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
