Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch's venture capital-focused podcast, where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. For this week's deep dive, Natasha and Danny unpacked the Expensify EC-1, which includes a ton of surprises, building tips, and, as we discuss in the show, some life lessons as well. This is our largest EC-1 to date, and is the result of six months of prodigious work from the inimitable Anna Heim. Of course, we had to add our Equity spin on the feature and boiled down our favorite musings into a succinct episode. Here's what we got into:Expensify's silent period as a fun dynamic to deal with as reportersThere's always an Uber angle, and Expensify is no different when you realize its early roots are tied to entrepreneur Travis Kalanick's persuasionHow Expensify manages to stay slim, focus in a rural town in Michigan, and achieve profitabilityNatasha asked if lack of structure negatively or positive impacts minorities and underrepresented folk, while Danny explained a nifty way that the company deals with promotions and raises.Danny explained how re-writing the playbook might positively impact recruitment, and how joining Expensify doesn't come with your classic SaaS pitch. And we end with a meta conversation on how society views work, and why neither of us went to spend the next 50 years with predictability.Once you're done listening to the episode, make sure to check out Heim's EC-1 below: Part 1: Origin story “How a band of P2P hackers planted the seeds of a unique expense management giant” (2,400 words/10 minutesPart 2: Culture: “How Expensify got to $100M in revenue by hiring ‘stem cells' and not ‘cogs in a wheel'” (3,120 words/12.5 minutes)Part 3: Expansion and remote work: “How Expensify shed Silicon Valley arrogance to realize its global ambitions” (3,250 words/13 minutes)Part 4: Engineering and technology: “How Expensify hacked its way to a robust, scalable tech stack” (3,300 words/13 minutes)Part 5: Business model: “How bottom-up sales helped Expensify blaze the path for SaaS” (4,200 words/17 minutes)And that's the show! For this week’s deep dive, Alex and Danny unpacked Natasha's latest project: The Duolingo EC-1. The 12,000 word four-part series was published last week and is worth a read. But, until you get to it, enjoy our podcast that doubles-clicks into its most interesting bits.[caption id="attachment_2146587" align="aligncenter" width="482"] Duo, Duolingo's mascot, flying around. Image Credits: Duolingo [/caption]Here's how it went, after we got our morning allergy banter out of the way:What's an EC-1? A TechCrunch-style deep-dive into one of the startup world's most promising, and interesting companies. What's with the flying vermin up above? That's Duolingo's mascot. Which is a combination of hypercutness and modest menace. (You will have fun learning a language. Or the owl will visit.)Why did we write about Duolingo? No, it wasn't only because Duolingo is edtech. Natasha dug into the company's product-led growth mode, and its views on gamification, which were fascinating. What's up with today's show name? As it turns out, Duolingo has a Tinder angle. In fact, Duolingo leaned on some of the biggest companies out there when it came to design and monetization. And as with all edtech companies, we talked monetization and outcomes! The Duolingo EC-1 comprises four main articles numbering 12,200 words and a reading time of 48 minutes. Here’s what’s in store:Part 1: Origin story “How a bot-fighting test turned into edtech’s most iconic brand, Duolingo” (3,300 words/13 minutes) — looks at how Guatemalan immigrant entrepreneur Luis von Ahn pivoted from fighting bot attacks on login screens with squiggly text to building one of edtech’s great success stories.Part 2: Product-led growth strategy “The product-led growth behind edtech’s most downloaded app” (3,000 words/12 minutes) — analyzes the tactics and tradeoffs that an edtech company has to evaluate as it grows from thousands to 500 million registered learners.Part 3: Monetization “How Duolingo became fluent in monetization” (2,800 words/11 minutes) — examines how Duolingo experimented with a variety of different business models to match its unique community, and why it chose subscription in the end.Part 4: New initiatives and future outlook “Duolingo can’t teach you how to speak a language, but now it wants to try” (3,100 words/12 minutes) — explores how Duolingo is launching new business lines, their chances for success, and how the company is attempting to expand its main product from basic language fluency to mastery while adding speaking skills to the mix.And of course, use code Extra Crunch "Equity" for a sweet, and perhaps the best, discount to access this story and all of our best stuff.Until Friday!

Good Morning it's Tuesday April 13th and this is Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today - A surge in outdoor trail use in the Wenatchee Valley may mean even larger crowds at places like Saddlerock or Colchuck Lake this summer. Today's episode is brought to you by Equilus Group Incorporated. Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Equilus Group, Inc- Building Your Financial Success. Learn more at Equilusfinancial.com. Member SIPC and FINRA. Now our feature story… There's been a common theme among trails across the Wenatchee Valley since last year…. Growing popularity. According to local outdoor organizations the surge in trail use could mean there will be even larger crowds at popular spots. Wenatchee resident Stacey Hill, took her first hike of the season on Sage Hills last week. Hill was one of a few hikers out Thursday morning, soaking in the sun while catching first glimpses of wildflowers. She noted that a lot of people have been hiking in the foothills, in fact the parking lots have been full at Saddlerock. Hill says she doesn't remember them every being so full. But this isn't unique to Saddlerock. Trails across the Wenatchee foothills area started opening April 1. Since then, more people than usual have been out. Accessible and open trails include Balsamroot, Sage Hills, Saddle Rock, Castle Rock, Horse Lake Reserve and the Jacobson area. Hanne Beener, the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust trails program manager, told us that people want to get outside, somewhere close to home. That trend seems to have continued over to this year. Beener says that the increase in popularity comes from a number of reasons. For example, last summer there were a lot of new train users who discovered something they really like. But the crowds have made some things complicated from a management point of view. Beener says that more people on the trails, especially those new to hiking, often means more management issues for landowners or anyone managing recreation. New folks might be unfamiliar with recreation etiquette or stewardship. This can lead to people walking off of the main trail, potentially hurting neighboring wildlife. More popular areas like Saddle Rock are seeing extra litter and people not picking up after their dogs. Branching out of the Wenatchee foothills, trails across the Wenatchee Valley have also seen more use. Mat Lyons, the director of the Wenatchee-based TREAD Map app, is trying to solve potential overcrowding issues by helping people find out where else to go. Lyons spoke about the mission recently on the WVC Rec Center podcast. Ultimately, Lyons encourages people to check out the dozens of other great places nearby. He's also working on an in-app pop up window that will show people alternatives to the more crowded trails. The TREAD Map app was released last July and has seen 1,600 downloads since then. Most of the app's users are from North Central Washington, but he also is seeing users from the west side. The goal with TREAD — which stands for trails, recreation, education, advocacy and development — has been to teach people how to recreate responsibly while sharing a variety of local trails. The app gives users a virtual map, listing trails, photos and reports from trails. Lyons said he is hoping people will look for other places to go. He doesn't want us to love one place to death. Mountain bike traffic throughout the valley is also expected to grow as soon as more snow melts off and extra trails open. Central Washington's Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance president Tony Hickok said trails in the valley have probably never seen more use than they did last summer. Maintenance will be their main focus, right out of the gate. Hickok told us that trails are kind of like a living thing and change over time. And the more use there is to a trail, the more damage there can be. To him, the biggest thing that needs to be communicated is not to hurt trails. If a user can see their footprint or tire track, then it is too wet. A lot of harm can be done if people ride on trails that aren't ready. But Hickok also said he hopes the high level of trail use continues this summer. He hopes people will keep being active and getting out. After all, that's what makes this area so amazing. To read more on this story, find a link to the TREAD app, or stay up to date on outdoors news in North Central Washington, visit us at wenatcheeworld.com Starting on Thursday this week everyone 16 and older across the state will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccinations. You can make an appointment online at vaccinelocator.doh.wa.gov/ // A recent change in how counties are being evaluated for COVID-19 gives Chelan and Douglas counties a better shot at staying in Phase 3 of the “Healthy Washington” reopening plan. Until Friday, counties needed to pass two state measurements. But now, counties would have to fail both metrics in order to get sent back a phase. // After an issue arose with a refrigerator that stored vaccines at Safeway Pharmacy in Wenatchee last week, they were forced to use the doses immediately. We're excited to report that they were able to use all 60 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. // And remember, for all news related to vaccinations and covid-19 visit us at wenatcheeworld.com/news/coronavirus. - Before we continue, a special thanks to our friends and sponsors at Confluence Health. Learn more by visiting them at ConfluenceHealth.com - Next we're excited to highlight a new business in our community. The Salad Bar finally opened to the public at the end of March. It's located in the Swim and Gym building, where the Brick Deli used to be before it closed at the beginning of the pandemic. There are too many salad toppings to name but there are at least four types of dressings, five types of meat and over a dozen different types of vegetables to choose from. Owner Micaiah McCreary told us that they're so excited to finally be open and provide a healthy option for the community. They wanted to carry on what the Brick Deli had started, so they didn't stray too far from what options they had. But they did add in a few of their own personal touches and upgraded some of the products. Salads are sold by weight at $8.99 a pound. They also have sandwiches, paninis and flatbreads. You can stop by Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, if you're looking for a new job, McCreary said they're hiring! - Before we go, some local history, Wenatchee Valley History is brought to you by NABUR [this is pronounced just like neighbor] – your trusted neighborhood community. Now, some history… The 1954 film “Appleland” looks at the apple industry in the state of Washington. It discusses everything from the geology of Washington, to the irrigation of apple orchards from the Columbia and Yakima Rivers. And of course, the Apple Blossom Festival. The 28 minute color film was narrated by Patrick MacGeehan. It was presented by the Washington State Apple Commission, and created by Joseph Yolo. Thanks for listening. What's up y'all? It's Tuesday, and the Big Board is back, that's what's up. And today's show is a special one, because it's the episode you've all been waiting for: The Wide Receivers. It's a position that's plagues Baltimore going back many, many years, and with a superstar quarterback entering his prime, the fervor for Eric DeCosta to finally figure it out is reaching a fever pitch among fans. It's doubtful that the signing of Sammy Watkins will preclude him from taking a look at the position in the draft, so with plenty of awesome options to choose from, fans should be excited that he'll look to do so. With all that in mind, here's our breakdown on them. We hope you guys enjoy, and that you'll go and vote on your favorite prospects that we've broken down on the Twitter poll we'll be shooting out @PodcastBeatdown. Until Friday, Arrivederci! RadioPublic|LibSyn|YouTube|Patreon|Square Cash (Share code: Send $5, get $5!) David Waldman gives it all he’s got for today’s KITM. After that, we’re on our own. (Until Friday’s show.) Yesterday, Donald Trump announced... what he has announced since the beginning of his term, that he wasn’t interested in being president, that he was taking over. That can’t be a surprise to anyone at this point, with the exception of the New York Times, and even they read the papers sometimes. Mitch McConnell, Liz Cheney, and Mitt Romney assure us that everything’s A-OK, and as always, are not to be trusted. Lindsey Graham is fine with any decision, once he knows the fix is in. Still, the polls are as rock steady as always… and yet increasingly better. Greg Dworkin leads us through the paradox of polling undecideds — how would anyone know if they don’t? It also helps pollsters to know what to ask. Unfortunately for Trump, red states like Georgia, Iowa and Texas still have women voting. Girl Scouts found a way to lure people to the polls. On the other hand, maybe strippers could convince even more voters to get out to the poles. Trump might be just giving up in some states. Donald should give up on any memorials, of any kind — not even his face on a gift card. Eric Trump’s going to jail, but first he’s going to court. Will Qanons be just more Birchers in the Freedom caucus? The Durham report hopes to link Adrenochrome to Deepwater Horizon. Michael Bloomberg is making it tough for Florida to keep their voter suppression stories straight. Your Lana Marks handbag isn’t set to be a collector’s item anymore. Asymptomatic Covid-19 carrier/Missouri Governor Mike Parson makes his wife sick. No one wants Benjamin Netanyahu to crash at their place. He brings his laundry and the futon smells for weeks.

Calling all fellow bookworms, library nerds, and general lovers of literature — it’s time for another book club episode of the podcast! Whenever there are five Fridays in a month, we devote the extra Friday to a book that we can’t get enough of. In this episode, we’re diving into the mega #1 New York Times bestseller Untamed by Glennon Doyle. Glennon’s books are the opposite of your average self-help book written by a perky middle-aged woman with plenty of platitudes and not a lot of depth. Her work is deep and moving and it’ll light a fire under your butt. It’s required reading for all humans, if you ask us (but especially highly sensitives, people-pleasers, women, and anyone who wants to live their life without guilt or constriction). We talked about… Glennon working up the courage to leave her husband, break up her family, and rebuild a new family with Abby Wambach (the Olympic soccer player, who she’d only met in person once). How we’re encouraged and rewarded, from a very young age, to ignore our own inner wisdom. Why highly sensitives aren’t “broken.” How to walk away from people and things that aren’t right for you, even when you’re scared and burdened by guilt and uncertainty. What it really means to be a person who’s whole and fulfilled. After you’ve listened, leave us a comment to let us know which truthbombs from this book resonated with you most! CLARITY IN A TIME OF PANDEMIC: ENDS JUNE 5! If we can help you find some relief, clarity, and direction right now, then that will feel like a win! It’s time for another “Magic 8-Ball” episode! AKA, where we shake up the nearly 200 episodes we’ve released in the past two years, and the one that rises to the surface has a message that you needed to hear today. Have you ever heard something that felt so true that it resonated in your very bones? Even if you couldn’t explain why you knew it was true? You just knew. That’s how I felt when I read this passage from the end of Elizabeth Gilbert’s mega-bestselling book Eat, Pray, Love: “The Zen Buddhists say that an oak tree is brought into creation by two forces at the same time. Obviously, there is the acorn from which it all begins, the seed which holds all the promise and potential, which grows into the tree. Everybody can see that. But only a few can recognize that there is another force operating here as well—the future tree itself, which wants so badly to exist that it pulls the acorn into being, drawing the seedling forth with longing out of the void, guiding the evolution from nothingness to maturity. In this respect, say the Zens, it is the oak tree that creates the very acorn from which it was born.” I mean, damn, right? In this clarity-on-fire-side-chat (…get it?) from October 2018, Kristen and I put on our philosopher’s hats (debatable whether we ever took them off in the first place) and dove into this whole acorn/oak tree thing. We talked about: What is the point of desire? Why do we crave certain things, and not others? And what does it mean for you to want something? Why we believe desire isn’t random (and why wanting something might just be proof that you’re eventually going to get it—yes, you read that right). The relativity of time, and why the veil between the present, past, and future might be thinner than any of us realize (no big deal). Some mind-blowing facts about the Universe that put our itsy-bitsy problems into perspective. A fun exercise to help you communicate with your past and future selves (sounds creepy, but isn’t). If you like deep conversations, there’s nothing better than this one! Enjoy, and come leave a comment after you’ve listened to share your own deep thoughts. We all know how good it feels to get rid of actual stuff—clothes that are out of style, clutter that’s taking up space in your closet, décor that belongs in another decade. We’d argue it feels just as good, if not better, to get rid of your metaphorical crap—the beliefs that weigh you down, the assumptions that you inherited from someone else, and the fears that are no longer relevant to the times we’re living in now. So, in that spirit, we’re back with another special episode of Burn This. Every once in a while, we’re going to go through some of our collective intangible garbage and give you, and all of us, permission to throw it in the burn pile! Today we’re burning the idea that you should sacrifice your health for a job. We got into… How alarmingly normal it is for people we coach to say things like, “I’ve daydreamed about getting into a mini car crash so I don’t have to go to work,” or, “I’ve thought about how I could take leave for a while if I fell and broke my leg in the shower!” Why there’s NOTHING wrong with you if you’ve had thoughts like this, but why your focus is definitely in the wrong place. Fears about being peer pressured to go back to work during the pandemic, and how to handle that. Signs that your body is trying to tell you something about your job, and how to listen. After you’ve listened, come leave a comment to share if you’ve found yourself sacrificing your health for your job, and what happened! Introvert vs. extrovert. Type A vs. type B. Hard skills vs. soft skills. Labels can be helpful shortcuts for understanding ourselves better and giving other people a quick snapshot of how we operate. But more often than not, the debate around “are you this type of person or THAT type of person?” is wayyy too limiting. No one is 100% introverted (even Rachel, one of the most introvertiest introverts can only boast 80% on the spectrum). No one is JUST “type A” (whatever that means). And no one has ONLY soft skills. But we think of ourselves like that, don’t we? We assume because we’re a “soft skills person” that what we have is less valuable, and that people will treat us, hire us, and pay us accordingly. There is a WHOLE lot wrong with the “hard skills vs. soft skills” debate, and in this month’s brand-new side chat we’re setting the record straight. We got into: The traditional definition of hard and soft skills (and why we don’t fully agree!) Why people tend to pay more attention to hard skills and (seemingly) value them more How to identify soft skills you didn’t realize you had If you’re having a difficult time at work, why your ratio of hard/soft skills may be the culprit How to impress someone with your soft skills (and make them want to hire you) After you’ve listened come leave a comment to share what some of your hard/soft skills are, and your take on this debate! What a week it was! While crude oil prices dragged the Indian stock markets lower, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s boosters sent markets soaring and how! Tuesday was a much worse day for stock market investors in India. The Sensex shed 642 points. Until Friday, the focus of the week was crude oil. Owing to the Saudi Arabia’s drone attacks, the soaring oil prices rattled the already weakening Indian economy. The fears of further slowdown were widespread. Then came the blockbuster Friday! Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s booster package on corporate tax, surcharge and buybacks turned the whole stock market story around. Markets cheered and rallied. In this episode we talk about what drove Sensex from 640 points down to 2,000 points up! Tune in...

This is the first podcast in our American Patriot Series, and today we sit down with Joshua Caleb Green. Caleb discusses being raised in a difficult background and how he overcame obstacles in his early life that led him to where he is today. Caleb served in the USMC and completed a combat tour in Afganistan. Following his tour in the Marines, he took advantage of the GI bill and attended the University of South Carolina, graduating in May of 2018. Caleb provides us an interesting look into the life of an American Patriot and offers us some great advice on diet, exercise, and attitude. You will definitely want the kids to listen to this one! Please encourage your friends and family to listen to Caleb's inspiring message. I want to thank Caleb for participating in the interview. We will have more interviews with American patriots in future podcasts so be sure to tune in each week. Until Friday... *There's a little sound distortion on the front end but it evens out quickly.

WRSP Radio presents the 14th episode of the second year of Weekend Sports Huddle with co-hosts Tom Pollin, Hunter Hodies and producer Dave Holcomb. Until Friday night, the Cleveland Indians just kept on winning, reeling off 22 straight victories, including a ninth-inning comeback Thursday. The Indians have written their names into the record books, but does this Cleveland team own the all-time winning streak record? Our hosts will debate at the top of the show. Then, our three hosts will dive completely into the start of the NFL season. While one rookie back had an impressive debut for the Chicago Bears, All-Pro Le'Veon Bell had a slow start out of the gate for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Can his poor Week 1 be attributed to missing training camp? This episode will also two special NFL segments - our traditional Nostrathoms Predicts and a new segment called "Big Deal or Overreaction" We want to hear your opinions! call into the show at 516-387-1417 or tweet @wkdsportshuddle.
We headed to Charlotte this weekend for Prism Supply and Dice Magazines Congregation Show. Man what weekend. This past few weeks have been brutal trying to get everything together for the show. The bags, My shovel, the van, and trying to coordinate t-shirts orders and shipments. You guys keep me moving for sure! So we left with every intention of the Bago making it, it did not, so we diverted, and loaded up the vans. I rode my shovel while Scott and the Mad dog drove both vans with their bikes and all the gear loaded up. It was a beautiful weekend, weather was great, a little hot, but no rain! So we hauled ass back to town and recorded a show. Some big changes are coming to the show, with me taking time off from work to do this, and us trying to have families, I'm working to make this show better, and deliver to you guys what you deserve. Thank you so much for hanging with us, we really can't express how much it means to us. Until Friday fuckers!

If you are a new listener to this award-winning podcast, welcome! With over 40 years of teaching between us, Reza and Craig will help you improve your English and take it to the next level. In this episode: Your questions answered: How to start and finish emails, the English ‘subjuntivo’, the difference between ‘avoid’ and ‘prevent’ and more of your questions and comments. Más podcasts para mejorar tu ingles en: http://www.inglespodcast.com/ More podcasts to improve your English at: http://www.inglespodcast.com/ Thanks to our good friend Javier for the olive oil. How to start and finish emails Reza responds to emails using a similar level of formality (or informality) as the person who sends the email. FORMAL Beginning a formal email: Dear John, Mr. Smith (Mrs/Miss/Ms) - Yours Sincerely, miss - singlemrs.- marriedms - single or married Dear Sir/Madam - Yours Faithfully, Hi, Good morning/afternoon/evening (Reza would not choose these greetings for formal emails unless the other person used them first) Reza is a bit of a stickler (stickler - rigorista, insistente) Ending a formal email: Best wishes, All the best, Warm regards, Best regards, Kind regards, I look forward to/I'm looking forward to + (verb) + ing (Reza would choose not to use contractions, like "I'm", in a formal email). Reza and Craig both agree that it's better to be more formal in exam emails and letters. It's always better to be more formal than to risk offending someone by being too informal. INFORMAL Beginning an informal email: Hi, Hello, How's it going? What's up? Hey there! G'day (Australian greeting) Ending an informal email: Love, Lots of love, hugs, Cheers! kisses, see you soon! Thanks,See you Tuesday,Until Friday, Feedback: Javier from Burgos Javier found us around episode 44 and went back to Nº1. Now he needs more than one episode per week because he's listened to all of them!I'm used to listening to a daily podcast of you (must be true, he said "listening TO"!), If I were the President of the Government I would declare your podcasts "of national interest" and I would enact a law forcing you to release a podcast every day. Poor Craig and Reza! A doubt I sometimes have is trouble translating our Spanish "subjuntivo" into English. Certain expressions are clear to me, such as the typical "verb + pronoun + to inf" (I told you to come earlier), and some others such as using certain verbs with the bare infinitive (recommend, suggest): I recommend that you study more /It is recommended that you study more. My doubt is with other examples apart from the aforementioned, such as: "No creo que vaya a la fiesta" = I don't think I go / will go to the party. Which one is correct? Both? Besides, concerning the examples with the bare infinitive, I think that with some verbs there is only that possibility, I mean: "I recommend that you go the party" is OK but you can't say "I recommend you to go to the party". But with other verbs, are both possibilities allowed?. For instance: "I asked that Mark submit his assignment" MAYBE YOU ASKED MARK’S TUTOR TO ASK MARK TO SUBMIT IT and "I asked Mark to submit his assignment". YOU ASKED MARK DIRECTLY So, my enquiry is: which verbs are only used with the bare infinitive and which verbs can be used with both structures?. Best regards from Burgos,Javier Nobody really agrees what the subjunctive is and when it should be used. Many grammar books and English teachers disagree. The past subjunctive is the same as the past indicative. The exception is the verb TO BE: I were, you were, he/sh/it were (for example, as used in the second conditional "If I WERE you, I would.....") The present subjunctive is the same as the past subjunctive, except for the 3rd person 's' which is sometimes (but not always) removed: "I recommend he TRAVEL without any luggage." The present subjunctive is more common in American English than British English. The present subjunctive of the verb TO BE is 'BE' for all forms of the verb (I BE, you BE, he/she/it BE etc). Example, "If there be any reason why this man and woman should not be married....." Some verbs which can take the subjunctive include: advise - "Passengers are advised that the 5:15 train to Swindon has been cancelled." / "I advise that he NOT go there." (negative subjunctive) ask - "I ask that he accompany us." / I ask that you put the gun down on the floor, sir." demand - "I demand that you give back the money." insist - "We insist that all passengers check in before 6pm." propose - "I propose we meet after dinner for a cocktail." recommend - "I recommend that students not write on their question paper." request - "We request that all guests remove their muddy boots before entering the lobby." suggest - "I suggest that we have a break for coffee after this podcast." Some expressions sometimes go with, or use, the subjunctive: It's a good idea....... - "It's a good idea that she stay (subjunctive) / stays (indictative) behind." "God save the Queen." / "Long live the Queen." Audio feedback: Antonio Prieto from Cadiz (thank you for your podcast) - XI've been hearing youX - listening to you. Here's some audio feedback from Antonio Prieto. Another question we have been asked, and I'm sorry, I can't remember who asked us this, but it's about the two verbs 'avoid' and 'prevent'. What’s the difference between to avoid (evitar, esquivar) and to prevent (prevenir, evitar)? To prevent is to take action to stop something before it starts. To avoid is to just stay away from something. (more active / engagement/deployment to stop something happening???) "My dad prevented me from going to the rave." (prevent someone FROM doing something)Example: Getting the flu shot would be prevention, hiding in your home and not having contact with anyone until the end of flu season would be avoidance. "I avoided speaking to John" - (avoid + gerund) Listener Feedback: Javier G from the Basque country - audio feedback - not because he says how much he likes the podcast, but because he is practising his English.(listen TO you, Good use of present perfect 'I've downloaded all your podcasts', 'I've learned a lot of English with you.' and 'do sport' (not Xpractise sportX) Italki ad read: Feedback from Mamen from our sponsor italkiConvenient (learning at home, technology)Affordable (cut out the middlemen, great pricing)Personal, Customized (personalized learning) Human Connection (not apps / software) ITALKI READ Paloma from SegoviaGood morning Craig and Reza,My name is Paloma and I live in Segovia.I listened to your podcast just a month ago when I luckily came across them looking for some listenings and I must say you two are doing a wonderful work (a wonderful job) which I am very grateful for. Now, making profit of your kindness (taking advantage of), I wonder if you could clarify this sentence: "I hope you don't mind my asking", which I believe is correct, instead of "I hope you don't mind me asking" or "I hope you don't mind if I ask", ....I am not sure which one is best, I always use the first one though, and when and how to use it.Thank you in advance.P.S. If (OR- NOT BOTH-) whenever you happen to come to Segovia, please let me know. I will be delighted to show you my little but beautiful town.Kisses. Paloma Audio Feedback Maria Jose - Past Perfuct Continuous - episode 91 with Mike: ( http://www.inglespodcast.com/2016/02/22/past-perfect-simple-and-continuous-with-mike-hardinge-airc91/ ) Emilia - EmailMe podrian aclarar unas dudas por favor?Cómo es correcto decir: 1."I turn 16 this Sunday." or "I am turning 16 this Sunday." (Present simple is better - (used here for timetabled events and schedules in the future. Another example; "The train leaves at 6pm" - fixed future time). (“I will turn…” is also possible. Future simple for a future fact) 2."The festival starts in the evening." (Present simple - fixed future time) or "The festival is starting in the evening." (Present continuous - Future plan/arrangement) Both are correct. Also, “The festival is going to start…” (to be going to+INFIN. - Future intention is also possible) For our 100th episode please send us your 'wins'. How has English helped you.
