We often hear the saying, "You are a product of your environment," and indeed, there is undeniable truth to this. Our upbringing, the values instilled in us by our families, and the communities we grow up in shape who we are and who we become. For many of us, we are born into families with long-standing traditions, passed down from generation to generation. These traditions can be cultural, religious, or even professional. They serve as a foundation, a guiding light that provides us with a sense of identity and belonging. While these traditions provide us with a solid foundation, they should not be a limitation. Each one of us possesses the freedom and the responsibility to carve our own path, to explore new possibilities, and to chase our dreams. It's essential to honor and respect our family traditions, but it's equally crucial to find our own voice and to follow our passions. Carving your own path doesn't mean forgetting where you come from. On the contrary, it means carrying forward the lessons, the values, and the wisdom of those who came before us. It means building upon their legacy, adding our own unique experiences and perspectives to create something new and meaningful. In this journey of self-discovery and personal growth, we must never forget those who have passed before us. They are the architects of our heritage, the keepers of our stories, and the guardians of our values. Their wisdom, sacrifices, and love continue to guide us, even in their absence. So, as we navigate the complexities of life, let us cherish the traditions that have shaped us, but let us also have the courage to explore uncharted territories. Let us honor the memory of those who have passed by living our lives with purpose, integrity, and compassion. In memory of Micheal Patrick Gordon ~ End of Watch August 8, 2004

Episode 54 Dallas Police Gordon Fulton #10785 “Walking on a razors edge “ Today's story is a unique journey of heartbreak, darkness, accountability and redemption as this guest truly battled that demon in a bottle. The Dallas Police recently created a policy to assist officers that are struggling with alcoholism to come forward and seek help and have full support from the Dept. More importantly, it was created to establish a culture to have a conversation, the brutally tough ones, to shine a light on the first responder worlds dark secret…..alcohol issues. The first responder community has a long culture of drinking to cope with the cumulative ptsd that occurs daily and throughout a long career. The Assist the Officer Foundation is proud to sit down with one of these success stories and hear a courageous tale of divine intervention and a lot of dominos that fell perfectly into place to help this young man have a new lease on life in both mind and body. This story is raw, candid and a peek inside the life of someone who is struggling in the shadows to cope with the rigors of this profession. Gordon said if his story can help one other officer come forward and get help then sharing his story is worth it. To the many other agencies across the country: Its not a matter of IF you have employees who are struggling…..THEY ARE. Build it….. They Will Come. It Could Save a Life and Career. "Your reputation isn't what you think of yourself, it's what others think of you." At the request of many people, the guest microphone is turned around on the founder of the "Bridging the Divide" podcast: Joe King. The 2010 Patrol Officer of the Year and the 2017 Police Officer of the Year for the Dallas Police Department, Joe King is asked to share details of his life and career starting from early childhood and traveling through points of his 19-year stint at the Southeast Division "chasing dope," his transition to South Central, and the poignant moment that had him eventually retiring his door-kicking patrol boots for office-shuffling cowboy boots. Joe is considered one of the most prominent officers on the Dallas Police Department for this era, with a long history of working the streets in patrol divisions, being shrewd in case-law study, an innovative project creator, and a mentor to many throughout his time on the department. He currently serves in the Legal Unit but in addition to his regular work duties chairs as the Dickey's Foundation board member, serves as an advisor for the Assist the Officer Foundation, underwrites and packages grants for the department, networks with community leaders, and tackles any projects brought to him by the command staff. All this is done with the same professionalism and method of approach that Joe used in his previous 20+ years in patrol, and all-the-while still remaining at the Police Officer rank. This episode is not a memoir of war stories, but rather a genuine response from the heart on questions asked about his approach to policing, his philosophies on professionalism, work ethic, relationships, perspective of the job, and what makes him Joe King. The last 20 years on the Dallas Police Department have been full of change and evolution in policing with the times, and it is undoubted that Joe has not only actively served the department in this age of policing but has also been a key figure in being at the epicenter of evolution, expansion, and progression on the department. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode of this incredible police officer, dope-chaser, advocate, volunteer, father, and great human being. His reputation proceeds him through the door. This episode hosted by: SWAT Officer Danny Canete, FBI Task Force Officer Misty VanCuren, and Narcotics Detective Mark Bacon.

A Dallas Police Officer shoots and kills an intruder in her apartment after returning home from a 14-hour shift. In the moments immediately following the interaction - the officer realizes she made a terrible mistake. She accidentally entered the home of a 29-year old Accountant on the floor directly above her apartment, and killed him in cold blood. But things are not quite what they seem, and it appears there may be a deeper vein of prejudice running through the Dallas Police Department than anyone was previously aware.
