How the collision of the USS Fitzgerald gives insight on the last days.
Former Navy officer, Thibaut Delloue, has seen firsthand the problems that have plagued the US surface Navy for years. His book, The Wardroom, begins as a memoir. However, it turns into a straightforward assessment of issues that have led to several high-profile accidents, which included the collisions of the USS John S. McCain and USS Fitzgerald. Both warships crashed in 2017 and resulted in the deaths of 17 sailors. We discuss Thibaut's experience as a surface warfare officer (SWO) to include his training and lack thereof. Thibaut served on the destroyer USS Carney. His experience included tracking Russian submarines and battling ISIS in Libya. Topics of discussion also include: An overview of the surface Navy and the areas of operations known as “fleets” How a Navy officer becomes a SWO Why the current training and readiness pipeline is insufficient The inability of the surface Navy to be ready for future wars unless changes are made The leadership and command climate within the surface Navy that prioritizes bureaucracy over real leadership The recent spate of high-profile accidents and the many causes that led to them The difference between the US surface Navy and other Navies including the Chinese Navy Thibaut has written about the military for publications like Task & Purpose, the US Naval Institute, War on the Rocks, and The War Horse. He now works in education in Nashville, Tennessee. Check out his website to see more of his writings and background: https://thibautdelloue.com/ His book can be found on Amazon. HELP SPREAD THE WORD! In recent years, the Navy struggled with a handful of accidents that led to the death of sailors and damage to expensive warships. The collision between the USS Fitzgerald and a commercial ship in 2017, which killed 17, was an alarm bell for the Navy. Since then, after multiple reviews and Congressional investigations, the Navy is changing its approach to safety and in March elevated its Navy Safety Center to the 2-star-led Navy Safety Command.
Could these 2 accidents and one unprepared squadron be prevented? What are the learnings that come out of the accident reports? Retire Command Bob Acker and Gary Casimir discuss the reasons that these accidents happened from their view. Was it money? Was that the reason? Is the Navy relying on too much technology to substitute for "real life" experience? Are "What If" scenarios plugged into the simulators? Not enough time for training due to uptempo operations? Is the right punishment being meted out?
Listen up platoon: This is our Best of 2019. The Top 10 segments from the past year. In no particular order except for which they appear in the pod:1) The squad went to Fort Bragg and some Commanding General tried to fuck all our shit up. Then we talked about the time a Cpl emailed the Commandant for funsies. 2) Astronaut Scott Kelly agreed to do an interview so he could surprise us by reading an old Barstool blog about how hot his wife is compared to how ugly he is. Our pal Feitelberg comes on afterwards to explain himself. 3) RIP Doris. 4) A probe into 2017 USS Fitzgerald collision reveals harsh conditions of the ship. That shit was gross. 5) Cancel The Code 6) Remember the time one LCpl tried to take out the entire cartel by himself?. Us too, and this is the first time the 'LCpl voice' is used on show 7) A Milfur went viral for participating an award ceremony dressed in their furry outfit. Kate fell down a furry rabbithole and hasn't been the same since. 8) Five veterans were among group of 8 arrested in Haiti, and they couldn't lie their way out of trouble. Also don't mess with the Serbians 9) Wearing pajamas to chow hall while the Commandant is on base was one of the best stories of the year. Our LCpl underground tells us what really happened at Camp Lejeune 10) Chaps basically becomes Varys from Game of Thrones. His little birds sing him a song from the Air Force's 735th Squadron at Hickam AFB. We've got one motivator who sick of everyone's shit so he takes an ALL CAPS dump on the entire unit's chest. Thanks for a great 2019 and happy holidays from the entire squad. Make sure to tell your friends about us so you have more people to share the laughs with in 2020.

In today's Federal Newscast, it appears the Navy will be dropping all charges against leadership involved in the USS Fitzgerald's fatal collision with a merchant ship.
It's a hell of a way to run a government on Waypoints this week. Join Rob, Patrick, and Natalie as they discuss a number of eye-opening investigative reports that have left them stunned lately. First, Patrick has been mesmerized by the saga of how local and state government in Wisconsin gave electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn one of the most lopsided deals in US history. It's a story told at the highest level by an article in Bloomberg Businessweek and at the ground level by a dramatic episode of Reply All that shows how a community tore itself apart for the distant promise of a factory. Next, Rob and Natalie have been reading ProPublica's haunting report on the USS Fitzgerald collision. How does one of the most advanced ships, with the best equipment, in one of the most prestigious fleets in the US Navy, end up falling victim to such a routine and preventable accident? There's no one clear answer, but a lot of contributing factors that add up to a portrait of a navy rotting away from the inside.Discussed: Inside Wisconsin’s Disastrous $4.5 Billion Deal With Foxconn, The Inside Story of an American Warship Doomed by Its Own Navy See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The 2017 collision between the destroyer USS Fitzgerald and a commercial container ship near the coast of Japan continues to bedevil the Navy. The Navy's public but abbreviated summary of its investigation left many questions unanswered. Now, using the classified version of events obtained by Navy Times, ProPublica recently published a comprehensive account of the event, which killed seven sailors. It's an interactive article detailing the scene, and for the highlights, Federal News Network's Eric White spoke with senior reporter T. Christian Miller on Federal Drive with Tom Temin.
Over 18-months after the deadly collision of the USS FITZGERALD with the Philippine-flagged merchant ship ACX Crystal off the Sea of Japan, from the courtroom to the fleet, we still have not come to terms with latent causes, accountability, or even a full understanding about what happened from a human and machine perspective. Earlier this year, journalist Geoff Ziezulewicz received a copy of the Fort Report made shortly after the collision by Rear Admiral Brian P. Fort, USN.Geoff will be our guest for the full hour to review the findings, the reactions to it, and further developments.Geoff is a senior staff reporter for Military Times, focusing on the Navy. He covered Iraq and Afghanistan extensively and was most recently a reporter at the Chicago Tribune. He welcomes any and all kinds of tips at geoffz@militarytimes.com.

The first Baltimore 9/11 Heroes Run takes place Sunday, Oct. 1, at the Inner Harbor — dedicated to Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Xavier Martin, the young sailor from Halethorpe whose promising career was cut short in June when the USS Fitzgerald collided with a container ship off Japan. Today on the show: Race director Pat Cappelaere and his wife, Doreen, talk about the race and their daughter — Navy pilot Lt. Valerie Cappelaere Delaney, a Howard County native and Naval Academy graduate who died during a training mission outside Spokane, Washington in 2013. The race is sponsored by the Travis Manion Foundation, named for a Marine and Annapolis graduate who was killed by sniper fire in Iraq in 2007. In an era of the 24-hr news cycle but in a subject area where accuracy and subject-knowledge is required - how does the navy-focused media report on the fast changing environment? For the professional journalist, the last few months have shown that even peacetime naval operations can create stories as professionally demanding as reporting on wartime developments. The stories coming from the deaths of 17 Sailors from the USS FITZGERALD and USS JOHN S. MCCAIN and the reaction from the SECNAV on down are just the latest example. Our guest for the full hour to discuss the interplay between media, political concerns, industry pressure, and personal agendas in reporting on our Navy will be David Larter, Naval Warfare Reporter for Defense News. He's a graduate of the University of Richmond and a former Operations Specialist Second Class, still DNQ in his ESWS qual.

What are veterans doing on the cutting edge of technology and entrepreneurship? Brian Jaffe graduated from Princeton University in 2006, majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. In the fall of that year, he commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy and over the next five years, he served on the USS Fitzgerald, completed Naval Nuclear Power training, and operated nuclear power plants onboard the USS Dwight D Eisenhower. Brian left the Navy in 2011, taking some time off to travel and shifting his focus to entrepreneurship. In 2012 he began an MBA program at the MIT Sloan School of Management but decided to leave after completing one year to work full time at his startup. Today, Brian is the co-founder and CEO of Mission St. Manufacturing, a 3D printing startup located in Santa Barbara, CA. The company is launching it's newest product, called Printeer in mid-2014, which will be a low-cost, easy to use 3D printer for kids, families, and K-12 education.
