Episode 105: Plant-Based Diets Are Effective Strategies for Overweight Adults

Maximum Wellness

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 30, 2021 6:37

It's no secret that being overweight or obese may predispose those individuals to associated diseases – particularly type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular disease. It's uncommon to find individuals, who follow plant-based diets in that cohort – due to the high-fiber, low-fat content of vegan-style eating strategies – in conjunction with the increased thermal effect of these diet plans, which accounts for approximately 10% of the total energy expenditure.Another feature of the vegan-type diets is its reduction of both muscle and liver fat, while increasing mitochondrial (energy burning) and postprandial (after eating) metabolisms. Just how successful have these diet strategies been for overweight adults, is food for thought for researchers. In November of 2020, JAMA Network Open reported the results of an original investigation – Effect of a Low-Fat Vegan Diet on Body Weight, Insulin Sensitivity, Postprandial Metabolism, and Intramyocellular and Hepatocellular Lipid Levels in Overweight Adults, which concluded that, “a low-fat plant-based dietary intervention reduces bodyweight by reducing energy intake and increasing postprandial metabolism. The changes are associated with reductions in hepatocellular (liver) and intramyocellular (muscle) fat and increased insulin sensitivity.”The study authors, from Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (Washington, DC), Yale School of Medicine (New Haven, Conn.), CNR Institute of Neuroscience (Padua, Italy), Institute of Endocrinology (Prague, Czech Republic), University of Utah (Salt Lake City), and George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences (Washington, DC), recruited 244 participants between January 2017 and February 2019 in Washington, DC., to participate in a 16 week- randomized clinical trial Enrollment included adults between 25 and 75 years old – with a body mass index between 28 (overweight) and 40 (obese). Those participants in the intervention group followed a vegan diet composed of approximately 75% of the energy from carbohydrates, 15% protein, and 10% fat – which took the form of vegetables, grains, legumes, and fruits. The eating plan was devoid of animal products or added fats. The control diet group was asked to make no changes to their standard diet, while both groups limited alcohol consumption to 1 drink for women and 2 for men. Both groups were asked to maintain their current exercise level and medication, unless changed by their personal physician. At baseline and at study conclusion, 3-day dietary intake assessments were analyzed, appropriate laboratory assessments were completed, after an overnight fast – along with height, weight, body composition and visceral fat determinations assessed. The researchers found, “the dietary intervention reduced body weight, apparently owing to its tendency to reduce energy intake and increase postprandial energy expenditure. The intervention also improved glycemic control and reduced insulin concentrations, owing in part to reduced lipid accumulation in liver and muscle cells and thus reduced insulin resistance in these organs.”It appears that this research also validated prior research. “The present finding that the increase in thermic effect of food was associated with decreased fat mass and increased insulin sensitivity confirm the findings of previous research,” which led the researchers to state that, “this intervention may be an effective treatment for overweight adults.”For more information, go to maxwellnutrition.com.

While the market research focuses on key variables such as population growth, job growth and other factors, the coronavirus (COVID-19) will leave an undeniable impact and alter the future of these markets. To gain a glimpse into which markets will thrive in a post-COVID-19 world, we tapped Neal Bawa, The Mad Scientist of Multifamily.    Neal is a data guru, process freak and outsourcing expert. He views his $250MM multifamily portfolio as an ongoing experiment in efficiency and optimization. Neal was a guest back on Episode 99, where he discussed the Top Multifamily Markets, so it was appropriate to tap Neal to share how the coronavirus will impact his view going forward. In this episode, we talk about the key criteria he uses to identify markets, how COVID-19 may impact top markets, which markets and submarkets he expects to thrive and tips to navigate current market dynamics.  Partner: Exclusive offer to join the Capital Impact Club for Multifamily Investors   Key Insights How the power and major tax benefits of real estate investing opened his eyes to the opportunities.  How he built a data metrics system Location Magic to find best cities and best neighborhoods based on metrics. It’s always somebody was always trying to make her seem like a bad person, so it seemed like my adoption was like this a great thing, which it was, but it’s like don’t make her look like a monster. Damon:                       00:41               Who am I? Who am I? Who am I? Who amq I? This is Who am I really a podcast about adoptees that have located and connected with their biological family members. I’m Damon Davis and on., today’s show is Tameko. She called me from Seattle, Washington in her adopted family Tameko. Parents just assumed that as an adoptee she was misbehaving. But when her older adopted brother showed up, he actually started framing her for terrible things, trying to force her out even worse. He abused her. On her search. She read a description of her birth mother that humanized her, but the first pictures Tameko saw documented the hardening of a once beautiful woman. This is Tameko journey. Tamika was in foster care until she was adopted at about three years old. Tameko:                      01:36               One day in the foster home I was in. I was like three , they were like oh, someone’s gonna come and take a look at you and I’m fine. they might want to adopt you and I was like, all right, cool, So they were like go take a nap. And I was like, wow. Now I’m excited. I went up to my room in my room and I, you know, and I’m kind of peeking around the corner and you know, finally, uh, someone knocks on the door and this, and they opened the door and this woman, this black woman, and I’m like, mom, because I’m, well, I’m black, but I’m that. I knew of at the time. So I was like, oh. And I was living in a foster home that a lot of white people, and it was Mormon. Damon:                       02:26               You said you were living in a foster home that was predominantly white and it was Mormon, is that what you said? Tameko:                      02:31               No, it was Mormon. Yes. So this was in uh a Utah Salt Lake City. I left that detail out. Gotcha. So, yeah, so me not seeing people of color day to day was kind of like, okay. And like the only person here. So when this woman comes to the door, who’s black? I’m like, “mom,” I’m thinking in my head, that’s the first thing that came to head. I had was this is my mother like, and I think that’s why it’s like embedded in my mind. I was like, oh my God, this woman, are you coming to get me? Like I’ve always, you...
