In S 4 E 9 I am delighted to introduce John McMahon Director of Client Experience and a product specialist for the Well-Being Index. John has personally worked with over one hundred organisations to launch the tool to hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals.  He has applied expertise in helping organisations practically use and apply wellbeing data and resources to guide evidence-based initiatives and implement programmes.        This episode is the first in a series of episodes resulting from the recent Organisational Response to Workforce Wellbeing summit facilitated by Beamtree and Health Round Tablein Sydney.   Fiona Fitzgerald Workforce Wellbeing Knowledge Network lead was the key driving force behind this summit and I am looking forward to sharing her insights in part 2 of this conversation.  Beamtree and Health Round Table brought Professor Tait Shanafelt, chief wellness officer at Stanford WellMD and a frequently referenced expert on this podcast, and John McMahon over from the United States for this event.       I was fortunate to have the opportunity to sit down with John the day after the summit to tap into his wealth of applied knowledge.  As you will see his breadth and depth of expertise and experience in this area is truly unique.         We discuss the role of the well-being index as one of the recognised validated tools for collection individual and organisational wellbeing data. John emphasises the important evidence for work-level interventions and how organisation can practically leverage data for evidence-based change. He provides real world examples of success and we explore the myths and challenges organisations face in appropriately using data to implement successful wellbeing programmes.      John's knowledge, perspective and applied expertise in this area seriously impressed me. California is the most populated state in the US, and as such, it has a lot to offer in the way of lavish living and fun things to do. The state provides many attractions for tourists to enjoy, including beaches, mountains, and beautiful parks for hiking and camping. All of these things are great for the soul as well as the body. The weather is also great, which is excellent for vacations or for staying home.   Of course, it is not a secret that this place had a bad run in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, economic fallout, and even a severe wildfire season.    Despite these ordeals, California remained resilient. It is still a dream destination for those who are seeking stardom or career opportunities. In fact, you may even get a job in Apple, Salesforce, or Google if you got what it takes to land on them!    But for others, California living is all about the beaches and having the best time of their lives!  Furthermore, California has a superb standard of living. This state is the tenth place in Sharecare's 2019 Well-Being Index, which indicates that most of its residents have a sense of satisfaction and purpose in their lives. Leisure and entertainment are flourishing in this area. Your life will never be dull here. In this video, I will list down all the best places to live in California. In our previous podcast, we heard from Turnaround for Children about how their Well-Being Index was designed and is meant to work. Today, we get hear the details – from the field – about how it works in action. P.S. 340 is a K-5 school in the Bronx, NY. Frankly, it's one of those incredible schools that goes well beyond reading, writing and arithmetic to help students learn and grow. P.S. 340's mission, stated clearly on its website, is to educate the whole child. To do that, the school offers an extraordinary range of programs not only to their students, but also to their families. This year, P.S. 340 is working with Turnaround for Children on a new way to learn about and help their students. They're using the Well-Being Index. This series of questions helps children describe how they are feeling. By regularly taking these measurements over months, teachers can learn not only what their students might be facing on the inside, but also what they might do to help. So how is it going? To find out, we talked with the school's principal, Alexei Nichols, and fifth grade teacher Diana DaCorta. As you'll hear, P.S. 340 is creating something that all schools – and parents – may want to learn from. For more information, go to www.turnaroundusa.org/podcast.

How do teachers know how their students are doing? Grades? Grades measure how much students have learned. Attendance? Attendance measures whether they show up. But as the Science of Learning and Development shows, how well children learn depends on how well and how safe they feel. So it's important for educators to have a true picture of the whole child. And, of course, the urgency and challenge to understanding how children are doing has only increased during the pandemic. That's why Turnaround for Children has developed its Well-Being Index. This series of questions helps children describe how they are feeling . By taking these measurements on a regular basis over a period of months, teachers can learn not only what their students might be facing on the inside, but also how to help. How does the Well-Being Index work? Dr. Christina Theokas is Turnaround for Children's Chief Applied Science Officer. She oversees the teams that translate the science of learning and development into resources and tools for educators – including the Well-Being Index and the teams that partner with educators to design schools that are organized to support whole child development and learning. Back on the podcast with me this week is sleep expert, Greg Potter, PhD. Through his articles, podcasts and live talks, Greg is helping an international audience understand the critical role sleep plays in health and wellbeing. Most recently, Greg has been studying the impact of circadian rhythm disruption, including sleep duration and meal timing, on the development of common cancers. In this interview, Greg and I discuss Alexey Guzey’s scathing critique of Matthew Walker’s book, Why We Sleep. We also talk about some of the biological processes affected by sleep restriction, including cognition, immune health, athletic performance, and appetite. Greg shares some of the ways poor sleep is associated with cancer formation, including the damaging effects of sleep restriction on DNA and metabolism. Here’s the outline of this interview with Greg Potter: [00:00:09] Greg's 4-part series of articles on sleep: 1. Having trouble sleeping? A primer on insomnia and how to sleep better; 2. How’s this for role reversal – Gen X and Baby Boomer business owners stand to learn a lot from (…wait for it) – Millennial business owners. That’s the conclusion of a survey of 600 American small businesses conducted for The Principal Financial Group, a Fortune 500 financial services company based in Des Moines. Amy Friedrich, a senior vice president at The Principal who helps oversee the Index, shares the survey results and her analysis this week with host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart. They may be younger than their Gen X and Baby Boomer peers, but Millennial-generation business owners are doing astonishingly well and also crushing it when it comes to work/life balance. When compared to earlier generations of entrepreneurs, The Principal discovered that Millennials are working fewer hours, providing extra and innovative employee benefits, and projecting a higher level of optimism. An article featuring a partial transcript of Dean's interview can be found on Martin’s Business Milestones at: http://wp.me/p770YJ-dq.   “Millennials are demonstrating they’re a new driving force as business owners,” says Friedrich. “Between working fewer hours, more growth and higher optimism, millennial business owners are a force to be reckoned with.” Photo: Amy Friedrich, The Principal Financial Group Posted: March 14, 2016 Monday Morning Run Time: 40 minutes 30 seconds Want to learn how to turbocharge your personal or business reputation?
