Feeling lonely and disconnected? Looking for practical ways to manage those feelings and foster a sense of connection and belonging? Look no further! In this episode of Health Bite, Dr. Adrienne Youdim shares valuable insights on the importance of connection and its impact on our health and wellbeing. Loneliness is not just a bad feeling, it has tangible consequences on our physical and mental health. But the good news is, we can change our perception and reframe our narrative to cultivate meaningful connections. So we can address our ‘subjective' loneliness, we shared a healthful writing practice exercise in this episode. You don;'t want to miss this out. It involves engaging in a dialogue with your loneliness. Allow yourself to explore and receive insights from this exercise. What You'll Learn From this Episode:The impact of loneliness on individual and societal healthWays to manage feelings of loneliness and foster connectionThe health consequences of social disconnection“Loneliness is a subjective feeling of perceived disconnection.” - Dr. Adrienne YoudimPrompt For the Writing Practice Mentioned in This EpisodeHere's an example of how you can engage in the writing practice:Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can sit down with a journal or a piece of paper.Set a timer for 10-15 minutes to ensure uninterrupted writing time.Start by writing "Me:" and then ask the problem or symptom that is bothering you a question. For example, "Why are you here?"Then, switch perspectives and write "Symptom:" and respond to your own question from the perspective of the problem or symptom. Don't overthink it, just let your thoughts flow onto the paper.Continue this dialogue between "Me" and "Symptom" for the duration of the writing exercise. Allow yourself to explore your thoughts and feelings without judgment.Remember to keep writing continuously, even if you feel stuck or unsure of what to say. Just let your thoughts and emotions guide your writing.Once the timer goes off, take a moment to reflect on what you have written. Notice any insights or patterns that may have emerged during the exercise. If you feel comfortable, you can choose to revisit and reflect on your writing at a later time to gain further clarity or understanding.Remember, this writing exercise is a tool for self-reflection and exploration. It can help you uncover deeper insights and gain a better understanding of the issues or concerns that may be causing you distress.Connect with Dr. Adrienne YoudimWebsite: https://dradrienneyoudim.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dradrienneyoudim/ Email: info@dradrienneyoudim.com

September means we are over 6 months into the pandemic. Although we have gained a little sense of normalcy back, there is still a lot of disruption in our daily lives. At the beginning, and throughout most of the pandemic, the news and talk was (and still is) focused on physical health - wash your hands, wear your mask, keep yourself healthy, protect those who are immunocompromised. But what about mental health? We know from past viral outbreaks that when people experience a disruption like COVID-19, mental health also suffers. Although on a personal level we all could probably talk about how COVID-19 has affected our mental health, we are now also finally seeing researched published on the impact of COVID-19 on mental health. In this episode of Psych Talk, I discuss the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, the factors that contribute to the declining mental health in our country and around the world, the limits of mental health care during this time, and how to cope and better your own mental health. I also provide links to published articles about COVID-19 and mental health, as well as resources that may be of use to you if you are struggling with your mental health at this time. In this episode we discuss SAC rate, the state of solar power in the US, and Voit – an early scuba equipment company. Your surface air consumption (SAC) rate is an important consideration in planning and executing your dives. Your SAC rate tells you how much air you consume at the surface and when you are planning a dive you can determine the amount of gas you will use during that dive. It isn't difficult to determine and with air integrated computers you can track your SAC rate real time during your dive. Solar power contributes 71.3 GW of power or 2.4% of the energy produced in the US and can power 13.5 million homes. There are 2.2 million solar energy installations across the country. California leads the way producing 26.2 MW with 1 million installations. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) had a goal of taking solar energy to 20% by the end of the decade. Let's hope we can get there. Voit is a company that started in 1922 as a tire retreading company that moved into the manufacturing of athletic equipment – specifically with a patent for an all-rubber inflatable ball. They moved into a full line of scuba equipment in the 1950's and were one of the first five manufactures in the US. Those five were – US Divers, Dacor, Healthways, Swimaster, and Voit. Voit provided all the equipment for Sea Hunt. Listen for more information on their early regulators.

Listen NowCMS has been experimenting with Medicare bundled payment arrangements, where the provider is reimbursed a total fee (either prospectively or reconciled retrospectively), for three decades. Under ACA authority CMS' Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) has launched several five-year bundled payment demonstrations, most notably BPCI that began in 2013. The BPCI demo allows providers to voluntary accept a bundled payment for any one of 48 Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs), for example a heart attack, under three care models. Model Two is the most popular. It begins with an anchor acute hospital stay followed by 30 to 90 days of post acute care. The most common Model Two bundle is for hip or knee replacement surgery. Recently, the Lewin Group completed its third evaluation of the BPCI. Regardless of the demonstration's performance to date, has it moreover reduced spending and/or improved care quality and outcomes, it is anticipated CMS will renew the BPCI demo in the very near future since the current demo times out this September. During this 25-minute discussion Mr. Clay Richards discusses naviHealth's BPCI's efforts, the company's BPCI financial and quality results to date, Lewin Group's most recent BPCI evaluation and how the demonstration can be improved under a reauthorized BPCI demonstration. Mr. Clay Richards is CEO of naviHealth, a post-actue care transition company and one of the nation's largest BPCI convenors. The company, founded in 2012, partners with approximately 50 hospitals in 25 states, collectively they account for over 40,000 BPCI care episodes annually. Prior to joining naviHealth, Mr. Richards served as Senior Vice President of Healthways, Inc. Mr. Richards' community service includes serving on the Martha O'Bryan Center Board, the Oak Hill School Board and on the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management Board of Visitors. Mr. Richards was graduated from Washington and Lee University and from the University of Mississippi School of Law.Information on naviHealth is at: https://www.navihealth.com/.Information on the BPCI demo and the Lewin Group's evaluation can be found at: https://innovation.cms.gov/initiatives/bundled-payments/. What if you could simultaneously reduce health care costs by 40 percent and increase a population’s life expectancy? You’d say you’d found the Fountain of Youth! Dan Buettner, author of the New York Times bestseller Blue Zones, did it. No, he didn’t actually find the Fountain of Youth, he says he reduced health care costs by 40 percent and extended the life expectancy of the people living in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Partnering with AARP in 2009, he implemented the lifestyle lessons he’d learned from hundreds of centenarians around the world who were discovered living in “Blue Zones,” communities with unusually high numbers of people over 100. Buettner explains the multifaceted approach to extending life, noting, “There’s no silver bullet to keep death and the diseases of old age at bay but instead it’s silver buckshot.” “The world’s longest-lived people don’t pump iron or run marathons. Instead, their environments nudge them into moving without thinking about it,” he adds. After the success of that pilot program, Buettner partnered with Healthways and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield to expand the Blue Zones Project to 17 cities in California and Iowa, reaching hundreds of thousands of people. Next stop: millions.

Health claims are still scrutinized during risk stratification, but today's analysts examine these data points through a slightly different lens, explains John Harris, chief wellness officer and senior vice president for Healthways. Harris explains why the focus has shifted from ICD-9 coding patterns to the financial trends evident in the claims, and what accelerating or decelerating costs reveal about an individual's health status. Harris, along with Dr. William Vennart, vice president of medical management and national medical director with CareAdvantage Inc., described how their organizations have approached health risk stratification, from how individuals are identified for stratification purposes to the effectiveness of risk stratification programs during the webinar, Reducing Acute and Chronic Care Costs Through an Effective Health Risk Stratification Model.
Predictive modeling and health risk stratification can help providers identify members for case management and disease management interventions, says Dr. William Vennart, vice president of medical management and national medical director with CareAdvantage Inc. These methods ensure that patients receive treatment for their chronic conditions early on and, in turn, reduce unnecessary utilization and lower acute and chronic care costs. As part of Wachovia's Healthy Connections program, employees with PCs receive a 55-second dose of health and wellness-related information each week that is delivered with the company's daily desktop video news program. The desktop videos launch automatically when users turn on their computers, and are replayed in the company's break rooms, common areas and financial centers throughout the day. These offerings are a core part of Wachovia's wellness culture, says Donna Shenoha, the company's vice president and senior consultant of health and welfare. She adds that the company's new Intranet platform offers social networking options as well as the option to "push out" messaging by targeted areas --- either geographically or by employee "affinity groups." Shenoha, along with Heath Shackleford, senior director of marketing and communications at Healthways provided the inside details on the innovative strategies that their organizations use to promote their wellness programs that engage and motivate participants during a May 21, 2008 webinar, Creating a Multi-Channel, Multi-Media Wellness Communication Strategy That Motivates and Engages Employees and Health Plan Members.
When Nashville healthcare firm Healthways decided to offer internally all the health and wellness programs it develops for customers, it provided an opportunity to improve the user experience externally, explains Heath Shackleford, senior director of marketing and communications. In communicating the wellness programs to its own employees, Healthways amplified the message around privacy, underscoring that the company held employees' privacy in the highest regard. In tandem with its internal communications team, Healthways tied its wellness message to the corporate mission: "Creating a healthier world, one person at a time." And Healthways senior leadership went to marathon lengths to support the effort. Both science and human nature played a part in the success of Healthways' telephonic care support for diabetes patients, explains John Harris, senior vice president of the Health Support Division of Healthways. Even though the program is from Healthways' care management side, he believes that the same results would apply to a coaching effort, since any time a human intervenes with another human, the chances of success go up considerably. According to John, an individual's learning style and risk levels are also factors in determining whether a Web-based or telephonic coaching system would be most effective. John also explains how advances in predictive modeling allow healthcare organizations to find candidates earlier and provide more compelling evidence of the need for a coaching intervention. Harris and Sean Slovenski, president and CEO, Hummingbird Coaching Services, described how to effectively capture and integrate multiple data sources to identify potential clients for health coaching and how to effectively use that information to achieve health coaching success during a June 13, 2007 audio conference, Building a Health Management IT Platform for Health Coaching.
