Longevity trailblazer and NYT bestselling author Dan Buettner. In The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer, Dan reveals an all new Blue Zone. And we will have exciting news that we will share later this month! Nearly 20 years ago, journalist Dan Buettner landed in the mountain villages of Sardinia, Italy, with a backpack and a National Geographic assignment to investigate hotspots around the world where people are thriving into their 100s. A wealth of dedicated research, extensive global travel, five books, and a groundbreaking national wellness project later, Buettner returned to his original five Blue Zones—Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula; and Loma Linda, California, along with Sardinia—for a follow-up visit. In The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer: Lessons from the Healthiest Places on Earth (National Geographic; August 29, 2023), Dan Buettner shares updates on the communities known for their super-agers—centenarians who maintain healthy, fulfilling lives and sharp brains until the end—as well as his Blue Zones Project across the United States. Yet, this book is much more than a recap. Within a captivating tour of the Blue Zones through beautiful photographs and engaging anecdotes, Buettner offers vital new insights and expanded practices for adding 10 or more vibrant years to life expectancy. Among timely topics and never-before-published information, Dan Buettner discusses his investigation into an all-new and exciting “Blue Zone 2.0”—the first intentionally created Blue Zone yet explored—where government policies have increased longevity, reduced healthcare costs, and strengthened a sense of family and kinship. The remarkable success of his Blue Zone Project, the largest preventative health program in America, in more than 70 cities, from Fort Worth, Texas, to Naples, Florida, as well as the entire states of Iowa and Hawaii. Stunning results include double-digit drops in obesity, smoking, and BMI; significant reductions in employee absenteeism; and millions of dollars of savings in healthcare costs. His priority on making it easier for everyone to develop and sustain habits proven to increase longevity by changing their surroundings. He can share simple tips for redesigning any home, room by room, to naturally encourage longevity-enhancing practices from plant-based eating to regular exercise to taking time to downshiftThe toll of the typical American diet and sedentary lifestyle not only across the USA—where rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and dementia continue to rise as we spend billions on vitamins, protein supplements, and prescription drugs—but also in the Blue Zones, due to the forces of globalization and technology.

In September of 2022, we had Michelle Pabis of Honor Health talking about the initiative of getting Blue Zones off the ground. In a short time of about 2 years, we've gone from initiative to kick off and I'm excited to have Executive Director of Blue Zones Scottsdale Sarah Kearney with us this week. Sarah comes to Blue ZOnes with an EXTENSIVE love of Scottsdale. She held many positions at Experience Scottsdale for over 16 years. She's held many leadership positions such as Board President for Scottsdale Leadership, Board President for Community Celebrating Diversity, Board Member for Scottsdale Sister Cities, Officer of Membership for Millennials in Travel, and the Vice President of Community Outreach at GiGi's Playhouse Phoenix/Scottsdale. Seems to only make sense that she lead the Blue Zone initiative for Scottsdale. Blue Zones Project makes healthy choices easy through permanent and semi-permanent changes to human made surroundings, policies, systems, and social networks. Instead of a focus on individual behavior change (diet and exercise), it improves the places and spaces people spend the most time so healthy choices are easier. It is community-led and focuses on improving the well-being of the entire community. The project seeks to improve the overall well-being of residents, measured by overall physical, social, and emotional health. A higher level of well-being leads to lower healthcare costs, higher productivity, increased economic vitality, and offers benefits for everybody. Calendar of Events Hope everyone had a wonderful week of Hanukkah to all who celebrate. My kids are always spoiled and thanks to our community for celebrating with us this week. Last week to get all those last minute Christmas plans from last minute gifts to activities. Gingerbread House decorating JW Marriott in Camelback is having a gingerbread making event on Dec. 21 from 3-5 in the lobby. Come and have some fun with the littles and try not to eat the decorations before decorating them! Santa @ Scottsdale Quarter Get those last minute gifts and get your picture taken with Santa as there are still slots left through the weekend. And of course you still have all the lights to go check out from Enchant, Princess and Zoo Lights. The general consensus is that red wine, in moderation, (maximum 2-3 glasses a day, depending on your age, weight, and sex) can impart cardiac benefits, and contribute to overall well-being. But it's more complicated than that. Yes, experiments with laboratory animals have shown remarkable benefits for subjects given large doses of resveratrol, the so-called "magic" ingredient in wine. But these experiments were in ideal lab conditions where every variable could be tightly controlled... which is not the case in the reality of day to day human life. So we look to the centenarians around the world, like in The Blue Zones Project. Lo and behold, almost all of them drink a couple glasses of red wine per day. However, beyond their modest consumption of red wine, they also have other lifestyle factors that would seem beneficial to wellness. Therefore, perhaps the wine is just one ingredient in a larger recipe that includes clean air, close friendships, organic food, and lots of walking and other natural movements. In other words, it's an overall lifestyle rather than one magic ingredient. The lesson here is avoid reductionist thinking. Resist clinging to any one ingredient, or even any one molecule, whether it's to be embraced (ex. resveratrol) or shunned (ex. gluten). Instead, simply adopt an overall healthy lifestyle, but try not to obsess over it. In any case, sooner or later, more research will become available and science will (rightly) change its mind. TO GET THE BUNDLE FROM JULIA: https://transactions.sendowl.com/stores/15779/226910 Bio for Chef Julia Dunaway: I'm a plant-based chef who does both on-line and live programs. I have a YouTube channel with over I served for 30 years in the uniformed service (air force and United States Public Health Service) as a clinical social worker and social work administrator. I retired in 2015 at the rank of 0-6, Captain. I hold a master's degree in social work from the University of Utah. While on active duty I attended culinary school at night and on the weekends, graduating in 2009. I wanted to have some type of culinary business when I retired and really enjoyed cooking. I conducted some part-time events for a few years, focused on dinner parties and cooking classes. Fast forward to 2017 when I started conducting demonstrations for the city of Fort Worth, Blue Zones Project. I became more interested in following a plant-based diet due to increasing cholesterol levels and high blood pressure and knew I had to make a change. Starting in 2018 I made all my cooking classes plant-based. It wasn't until May 2020 when I really got serious about the whole food plant-based no oil way of eating. Even though I was following the whole food plant-based no oil diet I was still overweight, had a total cholesterol of 211 and my blood pressure was often 140/80. I decided to challenge myself to 21 days of eating only the foods listed in Dr. Michael Greger's “daily dozen” and eliminate the vegan processed food I occasionally ate, the extra servings of sweets (all compliant plant-based but just too much), and restaurant meals. I also started exercising 90 minutes every day. Within three weeks my cholesterol dropped from 211 to 170 and I lost a couple pounds. I decided to keep doing the 21-day challenges and share what I was doing with my Facebook support group, Chef Julia Support Group. Since May 2020, my support group has grown to over 6,200 members and we start a new 21 day challenge every 3 weeks. I post photos of what I eat every day and encourage others. Anyone can join at no cost. By the end of 2020 I had lost all the weight I needed to lose, from 163-140 pounds and I've kept the weight off by continuing to follow the daily dozen, walk 5 miles a day most days, and lift weights two times a week. My cholesterol level and blood pressure have improved to the point that my doctor told me that people like me will put him out of business. I currently teach Zoom classes and my schedule is posted on chef-julia.com. There are 50 past classes available on my website as well. I also conduct in-person retreats on a regular basis. These 8-hour retreats focus on food preparation and cooking as well as preparing your home to be successful in this lifestyle. I have written several ebooks, a cookbook called Plant-Based Breakfast Favorites, have a YouTube channel, close to 15,000 followers on my Chef Julia Facebook business page, TikTok account, Instagram and the support group previously mentioned. One World in a New World with Victor Acquista, MD - Author, Speaker, Creator, Host This multidiscipline and multidimensional conversation explores science and spirituality in ways you may never have experienced prior, yet will sense the resonance of its sound wisdom shared. Victor begins by relating to a conversation he had with his mother in junior high. He mentions reading Krishnamurti and Kahlil Gibran and even Ouspensky and those perhaps being familiar to our audience. He had questions about time and free will as a result. Victor reflects on the Buddhist notion of finding your song and singing it. What is your song and are you singing it? Do you have 'training bias' in your profession? His breadth of scope in the allopathic and alternative healing modalities is obvious as he shares his journey to understanding the larger scope of health and well-being. It is well worth your attention and exploration as well. He offers many references to materials you can research as well. Do we really need validation from others to do what we can do if it works? Victor's walks us through his own process of how he became more self-aware and his reflection on how the process unfolded and wisdom garnered is well expressed with empathic resonance for many. He shares a declaration of world citizenship you'll find refreshing and transformative, noting the humility from which it came. He offers greater understanding for others in exploring the Blue Zones Project for community building. Noting his time at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Victor shares that he feels it's more important to have a direct experience rather than acquiring knowledge. Zen brings up a previous interview with Dr. Ervin Laszlo (https://youtu.be/NDYZl-fnGWI) regarding the Higher Self and the physical embodiment of the prevailing consciousness. There is a great discussion about the oneness of being going through various vibrational levels. What is your relationship with the expanding notion of love in your life? (We apologize for the sound issues. This podcast ran through some technical difficulties; however, we could not miss the opportunity to post this great convo.) Pastor Ricky recently spoke with Pastor Robert White of Freedom Church about health, ministry, faith, and Blue Zones Project. As ministers, we tend to live our lives in silos when it comes to our relationships, health, and faith. We tend to believe that when serving the Lord, we can do whatever we want with our bodies as long as it's not impacting my calling? Where are these hot spots, and who are these people who have discovered the secrets to living longer, better lives? Nick Buettner is an explorer, National Geographic Fellow, award-winning journalist and producer, and NYT bestselling author. Acupuncture Points of America Episode Summary Today Beany, Joanne and I talk about their conscious choice to plant roots in this community, where they could acquire land to specifically grow food and health. They have never stopped making that conscious choice and are enjoying the fruits of their labor now with booming business, building their new home and learning valuable lessons along the way. We get into the communities in the world known as Blue Zones and the following Blue Zones project that Joanne lead as the project coordinator. I point out that Beany and Joannne, in their various roles that emanate a frequency of love, are absolutely creating a Blue Zone of their own here in the area. We take an unexpected and heart warming turn down memory lane, we touch on Beany's role in the minds of the youth and dive a little bit into the intersection of Spirituality and Religion in all of our lives. And then we talk about food again. Because it may just be food that heals the world. I know that's where I've landed after this inspiring conversation with two beautiful lights I am honored to have as friends. IF you take anything from today, I do hope that you are inspired to support your local farms, learn about your food, go to farmers markets and begin to eat more seasonally since diversity is beneficial in every aspect of life. Hoppas ni gillar avsnittet ❤️ GILLAR DU DET VI GÖR? After graduating from Columbia College in Chicago with a double major in Marketing Communications and Public Relations, she snagged an internship with a global advertising agency (FCB) and headed to Prague, Czech Republic for the summer. There she was part of a team that successfully built an experiential campaign for a new snack pack product – which lead to her desire to continue developing the strategies behind how humans experience brands or products.Once returning to the states she jumped right into the Engagement Director position with Blue Zones Project, a National Geographic x Blue Cross Blue Shield wellness initiative centered around making healthy choices easier through the built environment. All this talk about wellness and positive environments eventually landed her in the beautiful and active Mile High City. As the rise of the cannabis industry was growing – Miranda landed a gig at Westword Newspaper, a local lifestyle publication that took pride in working with cannabis brands and dispensaries. After building many relationships and connections with local and national cannabis and cannabis adjacent brands, she decided to launch her own experiential marketing consulting agency that was more focused on helping cannabis companies to evolve through consumer experiences. MACY|MKTG quickly became a trusted consulting agency specializing in experiential marketing efforts. Soon after launching, MACY|MKTG landed a venue management contract with one of the most sought-after cannabis consumption friendly venues in the state of Colorado (Invisible City), where Miranda quickly accelerated her agency’s portfolio of cannabis consumption friendly experiences. She now works with several cannabis brands on various marketing needs and is currently working on launching a flower line in OK with a few fellow experts in the industry in 2021. CAUTION ADVISED: this podcast contains swearing.A long healthy life is no accident. It begins with good genes, but it also depends on good habits. If you adopt the right lifestyle, experts say, chances are you may live up to a decade longer. So, what’s the formula for success? National Geographic Explorer and author Dan Buettner has lead teams of researchers across the globe to uncover the secrets of Blue Zones—geographic regions where high percentages of centenarians are enjoying remarkably long, full and happy lives. In this week’s episode, I talk with Dan about his adventures in the Blue Zones and discuss what we can all learn from his findings.Dan found commonalities amongst each of these Blue Zones which led to a formula for success that includes lifestyle, community and purpose. We delve into all these areas and discuss how achieving a long, healthy and happy life is something that goes far beyond personal responsibility. People in these longevity hot spots do not pursue health and happiness. Health and happiness ensues from the environment which they are in. Dan explains what you can do to design your surroundings to stack the deck in favour of health, longevity and happiness. We also discuss Dan’s Blue Zones Project - a health and longevity initiative that models the principles of communities around the world that have the longest living people and applies those principles to other cities and communities. The results have been staggering. Finally, Dan explains how he has changed his own lifestyle following his research and he shares his top tips for living a longer and more fulfilling life. This is a fascinating conversation – I hope you enjoy it!Show notes available at drchatterjee.com/bluezonesFollow me on instagram.com/drchatterjee/Follow me on facebook.com/DrChatterjee/Follow me on twitter.com/drchatterjeeukDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. The program is based on the assumption that we spend 90% of our lives in a 20-mile “Life Radius”. Rather than relying on individual behavior change, the program focuses on making the healthy choice the easy choice. Instead of nagging people to exercise, we make walking easier and more desirable than driving. By making wholesome foods more accessible and less expensive than junk foods, people begin to eat healthier naturally. The approach is based on the cornerstone of sustainability. Unlike other health or wellness initiatives Blue Zones Projects address the environment not just the individual, resulting in long-term impact that stands the test of time. TAKEAWAY QUOTES“Blue zones, if you can just imagine picking up a blue magic marker, are those places in the world where people live longer, happier, better lives…and the only reason they’re called ‘blue

“The calculus of aging offers us two options: We can live a shorter life with more years of disability, or we can live the longest possible life with the fewest bad years. As my centenarian friends showed me, the choice is largely up to us.”Dan BuettnerSomewhere along the way, you've likely heard of something called the Blue Zones — a term coined in reference to five hidden slivers of the world that boast the highest per capita populations of centenarians – people who thrive to 100 and beyond. Unlikely locales were people not only live inordinately long, but also seem resoundingly happier than their fellow western world equals.Places where people forgot to die. This is the work of my friend Dan Buettner.A renaissance man in the truest sense, Dan transcends categorization. Global adventurer. Three-time Guinness Book world record holding endurance cyclist. National Geographic Fellow. Multiple New York Times bestselling author. A wellness and longevity superhero, Dan has keynoted speeches for Bill Clinton’s Health Matters Initiative, Google Zeitgeist, and TEDMED. He's appeared on Oprah twice and his TED Talk “How to live to be 100+” has been viewed over 2 million times.Without mincing words, Dan is my hero. A man who exudes life. A man with huge vision. And a man whose life work has positively, permanently and quite unequivocally improved the well being of millions. You might have caught Dan on The TODAY Show (which is featuring segments on Dan and his work throughout the week), read about him in last Sunday's PARADE magazine, seen him on NBC News or caught him on CNN's The Wonder List a few weeks ago. The common theme of these stories? Grappling with the lifestyle tenets that govern Blue Zone cultures as a means to help the rest of us live longer and better.According to Dan, Blue Zone cultures extending wellness into Ponce De Leon territory all live in accordance with 9 identifiable, convergent lifestyle principles (listed in the show notes below). Principles that are replicable on both the individual and civic level, as demonstrated by Dan's Blue Zones Project– a community well-being improvement initiative that has wholly transformed 20 cities and municipalities to date by implementing permanent changes to environment, policy, and social networks that make healthy choices easier. The Blue Zones Solution*, Dan's new book out this week, is a highly detailed primer that extrapolates from these principles powerful eating and lifestyle tools to transform your health. What if you could simultaneously reduce health care costs by 40 percent and increase a population’s life expectancy? You’d say you’d found the Fountain of Youth! Dan Buettner, author of the New York Times bestseller Blue Zones, did it. No, he didn’t actually find the Fountain of Youth, he says he reduced health care costs by 40 percent and extended the life expectancy of the people living in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Partnering with AARP in 2009, he implemented the lifestyle lessons he’d learned from hundreds of centenarians around the world who were discovered living in “Blue Zones,” communities with unusually high numbers of people over 100. Buettner explains the multifaceted approach to extending life, noting, “There’s no silver bullet to keep death and the diseases of old age at bay but instead it’s silver buckshot.” “The world’s longest-lived people don’t pump iron or run marathons. Instead, their environments nudge them into moving without thinking about it,” he adds. After the success of that pilot program, Buettner partnered with Healthways and Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield to expand the Blue Zones Project to 17 cities in California and Iowa, reaching hundreds of thousands of people. Next stop: millions.
