Let's face it. Artificial intelligence is everywhere around us—on our phones, in our homes, in our cars and in our schools. But that doesn't mean that we all have equal access to the best and most helpful learning technologies. As AI continues to develop and get smarter, how can we ensure universal access to these educational technologies so that all students can benefit? Nadeem Nathoo, co-founder of The Knowledge Society, argues that the private sector would be the most effective at getting cutting-edge AI technologies into the hands of students, saying that a direct-to-user approach is the most realistic and reliable. Isabelle Hau, executive director of the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, says it's imperative for educators to be involved in the development and dissemination of artificial intelligence in schools. She argues that while AI in classrooms can be a great equalizer, without proper oversight, there's a risk that AI could deepen inequalities between students. Louka Parry, CEO and founder of The Learning Future, says we must look at education and learning more holistically. While he agrees that AI presents a lot of opportunity for learners across the world, he reminds us that an important part of learning is cultivating curiosity in a social setting and that AI tools could potentially isolate students and deepen intellectual divides. Listen to the Doha Debates Podcast as these three education experts debate the best ways to incorporate and leverage AI in the classroom. Doha Debates Podcast is a production of Doha Debates. This episode is hosted by Rawaa Augé and was filmed live at the WISE Summit in Doha, Qatar, in November 2023. Thoughts on this conversation? Let us know! How can we know so much and yet continue to live so dangerously?Gregg Henriques has been working on this problem for over 20 years. He believes the problem lies with our knowledge systems, which arise from the Enlightenment but fail to make sense of the fundamental system through which we understand the world—ourselves, our own psychology. He says we need a second enlightenment, enlightenment in order to repair our relationship with ourselves, the world, one another, and with knowledge so we can respond to the climate crisis and build a better world for all.“Science afforded us a partial understanding of the world which emerged in the enlightenment. What I'm saying is they gave us physics and chemistry and biology pretty nicely. But it broke at the level of psychology, the social sciences and, in particular, how to connect sciences to the humanities.“As a function of that breakdown we built this entire institutional structure—but we don't have the wisdom to coordinate ourselves. We're flying blind with an enormous amount of power, but not wisdom. Part of the reason we don't have wisdom is because our knowledge systems are inadequate and broken.”Gregg Henriques is a a Full Professor and a core faculty member in James Madison University's Combined-Integrated Clinical and School Psychology Doctoral Program. He's the author of A New Unified Theory of Psychology, and writes the Theory of Knowledge blog on Psychology Today. He's a leader in the Unified Psychotherapy Movement, which attempts to use meta-theory to achieve an effective integrative scheme for the various psychotherapy paradigms. He's also interested in synthetic approaches to philosophy, and leads a group called the Theory of Knowledge Society, which hosted its first conference in April (2018), titled: Toward a Big Theory of Knowledge. He is currently developing a systematic evaluation of character functioning and well-being (called the Well-being Checkup), examining an approach to psychological mindfulness called "CALM MO" (which stands for developing a Curious, Accepting, Loving-compassionate, and Motivated toward valued states of being Metacognitive-Observer) and researching the college student mental health crisis and what might be done about it. In this episode, Tommy talks with Navid Nathoo, founder of The Knowledge Society, a global human accelerator helping young, ambitious people make impactful changes. In 2016, while trying to figure out his next career move, Navid and his brother Nadeem asked themselves a simple question: what would they do if they had 10 billion dollars? They quickly realized it wasn't what they'd do, but what problems they'd solve. They were astounded at how many of the world's major problems filled one sheet of paper. Navid and Nadeem discovered the root cause of the root cause: a broken education system. While the world around us expands exponentially, our educational institutions remain stagnant, filtering out students rather than preparing them for the world ahead. This is what their project is aiming to change in a meaningful way. Tommy and Navid talk about the similarities between The Knowledge Society and startup accelerators, the secret sauce for entrepreneurial success, and why failure is a requirement for any meaningful result. “Build a skill on how to figure things out. I think that is the most important and transferable skill to have as an entrepreneur, as a venture capitalist, as literally anybody. Learn how to figure things out.” ~ Navid Nathoo Main takeaways [05:54] The world is evolving exponentially and our systems for developing people aren't built to keep up with such fast-moving innovation. Adaptive education prepares people to thrive, not just today, but years into the future. [10:14] Startup accelerators are the closest thing we have to adaptive systems because they produce exponential growth and help companies thrive in the long term. [11:33] Your environment is integral to your success. Find mentors and hire smart people. [19:27] Reverse your aversion to failure. You'll never achieve anything substantial without failing along the way. Put yourself in an environment where you have a higher probability of success. Gregg Henriques returns to discuss the enlightenment gap, the unified theory of knowledge, and how the field of psychology has altered human thinking.
Josh Pather was born in South Africa and came to the United States in 2001 with two suitcases of possessions and a strong will to succeed. He had a strong business and entrepreneurial sense at a young age: mowing lawns in middle school, then selling outsourced shoes from China in high school. After an unfortunate end to that venture, Pather decided to get a more traditional job working at a bank. Still feeling that entrepreneurial itch, Pather and his friend from the bank started a DJ business. Looking to elevate their DJ business, the two partners incorporated a photo booth into their events. After Pather and his business partner split, Pather continued to excel in his DJ and photo booth business. Becoming an expert in SEO, Pather decided to name his new business Photo Booth Dallas, which was servicing over 800 events a year by 2014. In 2015, Pather saw a growing demand for people looking to purchase a photo booth. Subsequently, he created Photo Booth International (PBI), which aimed to not just sell people photo booths, but to sell opportunities to new entrepreneurs to create their own photo booth businesses from scratch. Pather began offering training and support to these entrepreneurs, empowering them to make a great living in the photo booth business. After inspiring over 600 entrepreneurs in two years, Pather caught the attention of internet marketing master Tai Lopez and joined Tai's Knowledge Society. In 2019, Pather and Photo Booth International were featured in a Click Funnels documentary and received recognition from Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary. As of 2020, Pather has empowered over 3,000 entrepreneurs, continues to mentor people and businesses through his Inner Circle Mentorship program and YouTube channel. Pather is a two-time two Comma Award winner through Click Funnels, the CEO of Photo Booth International, and has achieved recognition from INC 5000 Texas and INC 5000 America. www.photoboothint.com

Solutions to global issues like climate change and energy transition, and the advancement of emerging fields like quantum computing and ethical application of AI are being revolutionized as we speak...by the very young. This episode features Nadeem Nathoo, co-founder of Canada's TKS, or The Knowledge Society, a 10-month accelerator program for students around the world aged 11-17 who want to pursue disruptive innovation and exponential technologies. Beyond just radical homeschooling, TKS is like bypassing school entirely and going straight to a seed-stage startup. Participants have built radio telescopes and 3D printed rockets, developed microbe technologies and AI applications to diagnose depression and build prosthetic limbs, and developed biofuels using CRISPR. TKS has been hailed as a “School of the Future” by the World Economic Forum. We discussed the program, the challenges of post-covid education, and how young people at TKS are tackling fields like energy technology.

This week is the first installment of The Ones Who Succeed NEXT GEN, a mini-series featuring one-off conversations I have with up and coming entrepreneurs, leaders, builders and innovators, someone who is just at the beginning of their career, who I believe will go on to influence and shape our next generation. On today's episode, I am joined by 17-year-old Brain-Computer Interface Dev, among many other things, Luke Piette. Luke is a graduate of The Knowledge Society, a 10-month human accelerator program for curious and ambitious teens. His website LukePiette.com is full of previous projects he's worked on, including many applications and brain-computer interface projects, my personal favourite being a brain-controlled drone he built this summer. Luke, originally from Toronto, is currently based in San Francisco, attending Minerva University. I sat down with Luke to discuss his origin story, his perspective on technology and innovation and, of course, his professional ambitions for the years to come. This conversation was recorded on September 1, 2020, thanks for listening!
