Territorial expansion is typically understood as a centrally driven and often strategic activity. But Nicholas D. Anderson's new book, Inadvertent Expansion (Cornell University Press, 2025), shows that nearly a quarter of great power coercive territorial acquisitions since the nineteenth century have in fact been instances of what the author calls “inadvertent expansion.” A two-step process, inadvertent expansion first involves agents on the periphery of a state or empire acquiring territory without the authorization or knowledge of higher-ups. Leaders in the capital must then decide whether to accept or reject the already-acquired territory. Through cases ranging from those of the United States in Florida and Texas to Japan in Manchuria and Germany in East Africa, Anderson shows that inadvertent expansion is rooted in a principal-agent problem. When leaders in the capital fail to exert or have limited control over their agents on the periphery, unauthorized efforts to take territory are more likely to occur. Yet it is only when the geopolitical risks associated with keeping the acquired territory are perceived to be low that leaders are more likely to accept such expansion. Accentuating the influence of small, seemingly insignificant actors over the foreign policy behavior of powerful states, Inadvertent Expansion offers new insights into how the boundaries of states and empires came to be and captures timeless dynamics between state leaders and their peripheral agents. Our guest is Nicholas D. Anderson, an Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at The George Washington University. Mensimah's Round Table: Conversations with Women of Power and Grace
The mind has a negativity bias and it naturally clings to unpleasant experiences in order to “brace” us and protect us from danger. By actively seeking out moments of joy, we encourage the brain to shift that bias. As the saying goes, "what we put our attention on grows"—if we look for pleasant experiences, we will find them. We can start our day with the intention of finding good things; be hunters on the lookout for something that brings us happiness. When we notice anything that makes us happy—whether it's making it through a green light or calling an old friend—we should fully take in the moment.Let's work to bring intentional mindfulness to the positive moments of our day. One effective way to do so, is by using affirmations. Asserting and repeating positive statements shift the mind into creating joyful moments. The key is believing what we assert. If any one affirmation does not resonate, we can create our own statements. This audio is brought to you by Wearcheck, your condition monitoring specialist. The hydrogen economy is an important new growth area for platinum group metals (PGMs) and, in turn, PGMs are pivotal for hydrogen production and application across a broad front. Accentuating this in a Zoom interview with Mining Weekly, Heraeus Precious Metals new business development executive VP Dr Philipp Walter highlighted the strong global current momentum of the hydrogen economy - "politically, socially and technologically". (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) "There'll be significant growth," Walter forecast shortly before departing for Asia to visit customers. To meet that growth, Heraeus Precious Metals has formed its new Business Line Hydrogen Systems unit to focus on hydrogen applications, in particular proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis and fuel cells, as well as the recycling of spent electrolysers and membranes. "When I started in this role five years ago, now and then there was an article about hydrogen and PEM electrolysis, but nowadays, these are skyrocketing," he noted. Amid the need to replace the anticipated potential loss of PGM demand to battery electric vehicles, hydrogen is seen as providing abundant opportunity to replace expected PGM demand loss - and then some. (Also see attached infographics.) The hydrogen-related applications in which PGMs play a key role may begin with green hydrogen using PEM electrolysis but they certainly do not end there, extending as they do to other elements in PEM electrolysers, and so much more beyond that. PGMs, for example, are again key in the transport of hydrogen through carriers such as liquid organic hydrogen carriers or LOHC, ammonia, methanol and fuel cells. The European Clean Hydrogen Alliance has just published the Learnbook on hydrogen imports into the EU market, citing LOHC technology as a viable hydrogen transport solution. LOHC can use existing non-cryogenic liquid fuel infrastructure at ports, thus transforming assets without leaving stranded investments. Green hydrogen depends on especially PEM electrolysis technology owing to this coping best with renewable energy fluctuations. In addition, platinum, iridium and now also ruthenium play electrocatalytic roles in splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, with PGMs also being used as catalysts to crack ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen and to convert carbon dioxide into methanol or other hydrogen-carrier molecules. Furthermore, PGM catalysts are essential in gas purification through palladium membranes, by either removing oxygen in a hydrogen stream or removing hydrogen in an oxygen stream. In fuel cells, platinum on carbon catalysts are used to generate energy out of hydrogen and oxygen, forming water. When hydrogen is converted into electricity by fuel cells, platinum allows the energy to be released in a controlled manner as mobile and stationary power, which is so useful in areas not served by national electricity grids. The essential need to have enough Iridium available to accommodate and accompany PEM electrolysis growth is already being met by highly successful thrifting achievements as well as through the addition of ruthenium. This not only reduces reliance on iridium, a highly scarce and expensive PGM, but also reduces material cost. Primary production of ruthenium, also a PGM, is three-and-a-half times greater than the primary production of iridium. While some are seeking to substitute PGMs completely, being able to do so is seen as being highly unlikely. "As a chemist, I find that difficult because I believe platinum group metals and hydrogen belong together, simply because of their chemical nature," was Walter's comment to Mining Weekly on the issue of substitution. "Everybody dealing with platinum group metals also knows that thrifting is part of the DNA of platinum group metals," he added. Significant thrifting has not only been achieved with environmental catalysts, but also with autocatalyst...

242: Dressing With Confidence in Your Business Joining me on the podcast today is Angela Foster. She is a style coach who is going to help us focus on how to be confident in what we're wearing no matter where we're going, and no matter what our sizes. We can all dress to accentuate our best features. Listen in and learn how. Topics Mentioned: Confidence in dressing for any occasion Tools to shop with confidence Accentuating and minimizing with confidence Key Thoughts: We're starting our day with our own internal mind chatter that is not setting us up for confidence and success and joy and all those things that we need to be who we need to be in our day-to-day job.” Michele 8:58 There are also the colors that look best on your skin tone, so we nail those down. This may not be the sexiest part of it, but the thing that makes it so powerful is that when 80% of your closet is in a certain color palette, it makes mixing and matching so much easier. Angela 14:37 Think about it this way, as designers, we would never go in and start specking furniture for a room that we didn't know the sizes of, we would never do that. We would go in, we would know the sizes of the walls, we would know where the doors are, we would know what we wanted to accentuate and what we wanted to minimize, and we would know where we wanted the focal point of that room to be. We would take those measurements, we would create a floor plan, and then start buying furniture pieces of the size and proportion that fit into that plan. That's how we do it. Why do we not do that in our own clothing, I don't even know my current sizes. Michele 40:14 Make a list. Be specific. Know your numbers, know how the brand fits you and I can help with that. Have a list and stick to your list. On the heels of Tinder Swindler, it's a commonly-known fact that the dating space is saturated with the likes of fakes, scammers, catfish, and criminals. Fox & Muse, a new dating website founded in the startup mecca of Silicon Hills, is poised to change the dating game altogether by not only addressing common security concerns in the modern digital world, but also integrating a phenomenal luxury loyalty program. Singles on the site earn points from their subscriptions and boosts, which can then be used towards free luxury lingerie. Men even have the ability to gift their earned points to women on the site. THE Leadership Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
I have talked before about the loneliness of the leader. This is often felt most strongly when facing difficulties. The entrepreneur, in particular, owns the company, has all of the responsibility on their shoulders and feels the weight of that burden. I am reminded of the ship's captains in the age of sail. They bore the responsibility for the safe delivery of the cargo and passengers to the destination, dealing with bad weather and even worse pirates. The modern firm captain has the responsibility for the livelihoods of their staff and families. If we get it wrong we can bankrupt the company or see us taken over by an entity who fires everyone and strips the firm of the goodies. We face many tribulations of late, especially a global pandemic, the scale of which we haven't seen since the Spanish Flu in 1918. I certainly wasn't around then, so have zero experience or insight into how to deal with the disruptions. In other words, no smart answers for the challenges being thrown at us. The years of Covid have seen long established companies close in certain industries, especially those most effected by the ramifications of lockdowns, Government restrictions on trading, severe drop offs in client purchases and supply chain issues. This has thrown up some M&A activity where the strong devour the weak. You may be a survivor, but now you are faced with well funded, powerful competitors. We can see this as a threat and can start losing sleep over erosion of our client base or market share. We can also see it as a rallying cry to the troops to repel all boarders. Often in big companies, the enemy is that Division over there, rather than an outside competitor. I have experienced this myself. Ambitious people eye your patch and decide they should be running it instead of you. Before you know it they start getting their elbows out trying to sweep the main deck like a pirate takeover. This is highly destructive behaviour and in well run companies is squashed early, before any momentum is generated. In smaller companies, the team can become gripped with fear about their futures, as a powerful rival starts to try and eat everyone's lunch. As the leader, there isn't that much you can do about rival's advertising blitzes or attempts at price destruction. We usually will have limited financial reserves to go head to head with a rival who is flooding the market with advertising. We don't want to get into a price war either, as that is a race to the bottom and it seems they can always outlast us, when it comes to absorbing the pain. We need to accentuate the value offering to differentiate what we are doing from the others. This usually means a change in the product line-up or the way we package that line-up. As with most things in Japan, adjusting to change of any sort, isn't a strong suite of Japanese teams. In order to marshal support for the changes, we need to employ the rival to help us. There is a balance between making the most of the threat, without pushing people into a panic and we have to tread that line very scrupulously. Tough times demands tough changes and we need to convince the team that the changes are needed and this is the way to defeat the rival. The prospect of the competitor beating us in the market is against the grain for everyone in the team and we need to accentuate the pride they feel in what they are doing and in how they take care of the clients. We always refer back to the WHY of what we are doing. This is an incredibly important component of the culture build in the team and in tough times, we have to make this WHY our North Star to guide us forward. If we believe our WHY is stronger than the rival, we will take confidence in what we are doing and that confidence will be felt by the clients. Fearful salespeople, in particular, can be smelt by the buyers as they sense the desperation and then they start to doubt the stability of your company. As the leader, despite all of the pressure we feel and no matter how bad things look, we have to seize every tool available to us. Accentuating the WHY within the team and setting up the rival to be defeated are both important means of getting support from the troops. Spreading the concerns the leaders feels across the team is a tricky calculation. Too much gloom and people give up, too little and there will not be enough sense of urgency and camaraderie. Increasing the intensity gradually, rather than a Big Bang approach, would be a better idea. If the leader goes too hard, too fast, then that can be destabilising, whereas a gradual ramping up of the concern factor is more easily digested by everyone, as they gird their loins for the fight. The key thing is to see the rival as an aid to greater teamwork and commitment rather than a destructive force sweeping all before it. Sometimes, we can feel overwhelmed by all of the personal doubts and fears we have and which we keep to ourselves. In this sense, we can forget we have team members who are there to support and to fight shoulder to shoulder with us. We don't have to do it all by ourselves, but we must lead with the strong conviction of success. Our very essence, our ki, has to be communicating that positivity to everyone.

In the 40+ years I've been investing, I've made a few inspired moves and lots and lots of dumb ones. Accentuating the positive and eliminating the negative is the key to success in investing, as well as most worthwhile endeavors in life. The question: How do we go about it? The path most of us choose is the least efficient: stumbling around, making mistakes and gradually learning the habits and processes that most often result in success. A better method? Learning from other peoples' mistakes rather than your own, and adopting habits that have been proven successful by those who came before you. That's what this week's "Money!" podcast is about. We're going to discuss the 15 (at least) habits of highly successful investors. Want more information? This message was preached at New Testament Christian Fellowship on January 17, 2021. It is the last of a 7-part miniseries delivered during the Advent Season to serve as a fitting introduction to the glorious portrait portrayed in Revelation 21. Accentuating principles from Proverbs 11 , this series highlights unsung heroes and details from the birth narrative of Jesus Christ while also detailing aspects of the believer’s future expectation and hope that ultimately culminates in a new heaven and a new earth. Part 7 concludes deliberation of the “blessing of the upright” described in Proverbs 11:11, a blessing that makes a city to rejoice. Here, Mr. Boyd wraps up his examination of the Pre-Tribulational Rapture of the Church as seeded in the Old Testament (see Parts 5-6 of this long introduction to Revelation 21) by focusing upon Isaiah 18—the great present brought unto the LORD out “of a people scattered and peeled, and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto.” America, a very influential Gentile nation in world history and key with regard to Israel in these latter days, is referenced in the Holy Scriptures. And, like all Gentile world powers, she will suddenly fall. But, take heart American Christian. Your country won’t fall without an ultimate harvest of American saints presented to the LORD at the Rapture of His Church. Still today, as has been the case for many years, the largest concentration of the Remnant Body of Jesus Christ resides in the United States. When God does act to destroy this wicked nation, it won’t be without a giant gift brought to Mount Zion of her people. Therefore, we can live free and please the Lord regardless of what the demonic rabble in Washington DC says or does. For “we, according to his promise, look for newheavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (II Peter 3:13).
This message was preached at New Testament Christian Fellowship on December 27, 2020. It is the fifth of a 7-part miniseries delivered during the Advent Season to serve as a fitting introduction to the glorious portrait portrayed in Revelation 21. Accentuating principles from Proverbs 11 , this series highlights unsung heroes and details from the birth narrative of Jesus Christ while also detailing aspects of the believer’s future expectation and hope that ultimately culminates in a new heaven and a new earth. Part 5 focuses upon the “blessing of the upright” described in Proverbs 11:11, a blessing that makes a city to rejoice. This was demonstrated by the shepherds who lived as if they believed what had been told to them about the Messiah by the angels and what had already been written down in the Old Testament. They “made known abroad” to others; and they went on publicly glorifying and praising God in the midst of political troublesome days. In the same way, we who claim to believe what God has told us in the Scriptures concerning Messiah’s imminent coming for His Church should live in days of tyranny as if we most certainly do believe these promises. For the promise of Christ’s imminent return for His Church before the pouring out of God’s wrath in the Tribulation is not just New Testament doctrine. All prophetic doctrine or New Testament mysteries concerning Jesus Christ have their seed in the Old Testament. What is unfolded in the New is always enfolded in the Old. We should therefore expect this concerning the Pre-tribulational Rapture. This particular messages examines TYPES of the pre-Trib Rapture found in the Old Testament: in the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms.
This message was preached at New Testament Christian Fellowship on January 3, 2021. It is the sixth of a 7-part miniseries delivered during the Advent Season to serve as a fitting introduction to the glorious portrait portrayed in Revelation 21. Accentuating principles from Proverbs 11 , this series highlights unsung heroes and details from the birth narrative of Jesus Christ while also detailing aspects of the believer’s future expectation and hope that ultimately culminates in a new heaven and a new earth. Part 6 continues with focus upon the “blessing of the upright” described in Proverbs 11:11, a blessing that makes a city to rejoice. This was demonstrated by the shepherds who lived as if they believed what had been told to them about the Messiah by the angels and what had already been written down in the Old Testament. They “made known abroad” to others; and they went on publicly glorifying and praising God in the midst of political troublesome days. All prophetic doctrine or New Testament mysteries concerning Jesus Christ have their seed in the Old Testament. What is unfolded in the New is always enfolded in the Old. We should therefore expect this concerning the Pre-tribulational Rapture. This particular messages examines DIRECT PROPHECY of the pre-Trib Rapture, the fetching of Christ’s Bride, as found in the Old Testament: in the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms.
This message was preached at New Testament Christian Fellowship on December 20, 2020. It is the fourth of a 7-part miniseries delivered during the Advent Season to serve as a fitting introduction to the glorious portrait portrayed in Revelation 21. Accentuating principles from Proverbs 11 , this series highlights unsung heroes and details from the birth narrative of Jesus Christ while also detailing aspects of the believer’s future expectation and hope that ultimately culminates in a new heaven and a new earth. Part 4 focuses upon the knowledge, as described in Proverbs 11:9, that delivers the righteous in days of trouble. Such knowledge emboldened Mary to accompany her husband to Bethlehem, even though she was “great with child” and Jesus’ birth was imminent (Luke 2:5). Mary believed God and therefore she didn’t put “health and safety” first. Similarly, the knowledge of Christ’s IMMINENT return for His Church should embolden us to put aside “health and safety first” and be obedient when the whole world and a big part of the American Church is cowering in fear. The Scriptures clearly teach that the return of Jesus Christ for His Bride is IMMINENT. If something is imminent, other things MAY take place first but nothing MUST take place. It is therefore both certain and uncertain and demands an attitude of expectancy. And such expectancy is indeed knowledge that delivers the just in these dark days of American tyranny.
This message was preached at New Testament Christian Fellowship on December 13, 2020. It is the third of a 7-part miniseries delivered during the Advent Season to serve as a fitting introduction to the glorious portrait portrayed in Revelation 21. Accentuating principles from Proverbs 11 , this series highlights unsung heroes and details from the birth narrative of Jesus Christ while also detailing aspects of the believer’s future expectation and hope that ultimately culminates in a new heaven and a new earth. Part 3 focuses upon the eternal truth of Proverbs 11:8 as demonstrated in the part played by Joseph in the birth narrative of the Lord Jesus Christ. What Joseph was used to do for Mary and the baby Jesus is a perfect picture of what our Lord is going to do for us, His Church. Special attention is given to the Greek verb paralambano and how this sheds light on the biblical doctrine of the pre-tribulational Rapture of the Church. The ultimate deliverance of the righteous out of trouble, of course, is in the new heaven and the new earth, what is revealed in Revelation 21.
This message was preached at New Testament Christian Fellowship on December 6, 2020. It is the second of a 7-part miniseries delivered during the Advent Season to serve as a fitting introduction to the glorious portrait portrayed in Revelation 21. Accentuating principles from Proverbs 11 , this series highlights unsung heroes and details from the birth narrative of Jesus Christ while also detailing aspects of the believer’s future expectation and hope that ultimately culminates in a new heaven and a new earth. Part 2 focuses is about what must happen for Proverbs 11:10 to become a reality: The righteous must interpose as did the wise men between the tyrant King Herod and his intended victims, the baby Jesus and his earthly parents. The biblical doctrine of the lesser magistrate is introduced, and examples of important biblical and historical interposers are surveyed. Moreover, attention is drawn to the uniqueness of the American governmental system in which the people themselves are invested with the authority of lesser magistrates. Therefore, American believers duty-bound before God to interpose as did the wise men between tyranny and those suffering under it. The reality and promise of the new heaven and the new earth ought to motivate believers to engage in a ministry of interposing and remonstrating.
Dr. Rick Hanson, the esteemed psychologist and mindfulness teacher, points out that the brain has a negativity bias. The mind naturally clings to unpleasant experiences in order to “brace” you and protect you from danger. By actively seeking out moments of joy, you encourage the brain to shift that bias. In this exercise, you will work to bring intentional mindfulness to the positive moments of your day. This message was preached at New Testament Christian Fellowship on November 29, 2020. It is the first of a 7-part miniseries delivered during the Advent Season to serve as a fitting introduction to the glorious portrait portrayed in Revelation 21. Accentuating principles from Proverbs 11 , this series highlights unsung heroes and details from the birth narrative of Jesus Christ while also detailing aspects of the believer’s future expectation and hope that ultimately culminates in a new heaven and a new earth. Part 1 is about the believer's expectation and hope that does not and cannot die with him, quite unlike the end of the expectation and hope of the wicked (Proverbs 11:6). As Simeon’s expectation in Luke 2 didn’t die with him, neither does the blessed hope of any believer. A shining example of this in recent history is the testimony of the Cambodian Church as it faced the imminent arrival and terror of the Khmer Rouge in 1975.

Topic Discussed : Growth Opportunities in the Global Radiology-as-a-Service Market, Forecast to 2023Speaker: Suresh KuppuswamyKey takeaways:Long-term partnerships can provide new avenues for growth for imaging vendors. The proposition to customers should focus on workflow efficiency, higher utilization, cost optimization, and patient and staff satisfaction. Innovative asset-light models are an excellent proposition for cash-strapped hospitals, whose balance sheets are already stretched, and may no longer be able to generate funds for an outright purchase of equipment. Shared-risk Agreements (SRAs) can be used to persuade reluctant hospitals to enter into long-term partnerships. This provides confidence to customers on the performance and outcome claims of vendors. Leveraging modern technology such as data analytics to generate actionable insights for consumption by the C-suite in hospitals can empower them to plan and assess performance against their respective goalsFor further insights, please join us for future podcasts and become a member of Frost & Sullivan’s Leadership Council by emailing us at: digital@frost.com or click here to Contact Us.Related Keywords: Frost & Sullivan, Healthcare, Imaging, Teleradiology, Managed Equipment Services, Equipment Maintenance Services, Outsourced Services, Consulting Services, Imaging IT as a service, cloud services, long-term partnership, strategic partnerships, enterprise services, value partnerships, enterprise partnerships, strategic healthcare solutions, Public private partnerships, turnkey solutions, radiology-as-as-service, shared-risk agreements, performance agreements, risk-sharing agreements, outsourced radiology, outsourced imaging, outsourced equipment maintenance, multi-vendor services, managed services, “as-a-service”Website: www.frost.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
