Welcome to Building Brand You™, the podcast that helps you accelerate your success by unlocking your greatest asset – you.   KEY TAKEAWAYS: Science is everywhere. There is nothing around you that is not science. Making science more inclusive and relevant helps people feel that it is part of their world, rather than something only for the intelligent or elite. "Doing things that feel very difficult has created in me a whole new sense of resilience, self-acceptance, and the belief that I can accomplish challenging tasks. It doesn't matter whether I'm good at them or not; the fact that I can do them has been truly life-changing" - Jen Martin Jen's three life=changing reads: Atomic Habits by James Clear The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus   RESOURCES MENTIONED: Why Am I Like This by Jen Martin Amazon UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-Am-Like-This-Weirdest/dp/1761450425   Let's Talk Scicomm Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/lets-talk-scicomm/id1590937440   TEDTalk: Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator by Tim Urban https://youtu.be/arj7oStGLkU?si=l4n2sQtd_ocL6KFH      ABOUT OUR GUEST: Dr Jen Martin founded and leads the University of Melbourne's acclaimed Science Communication Teaching Program. She spent many years working as a field ecologist, until she decided the most useful thing she could contribute as a scientist was to teach other scientists how to be effective and engaging communicators. Jen also practises what she preaches: she's been talking about science weekly on radio for nearly 20 years, hosts podcasts (including @letstalkscicomm), MCs events, writes for a variety of publications and was named the 2019 Hero of Australian Science Communication. Richie Buzzkill is the producer behind the Full Metal RPG Podcast, which has been around for several years and touched almost every topic about TTRPG you could imagine and a little more. He is also, as he said himself, a Master Procrastinator, and someone who wanted to be an artist but was born with the soul of an engineer. We have been following each other's work for a long while as we almost begin this journey in the Indie RPG space simultaneously. I met Richie through a mutual friend (Brandon, former host of the FMRPG podcast) and we quickly become friends as well. They had me over their show a few times, and through their work I learned a lot. In this chat we had the chance to sit down, talk weird, get deep and figure some stuff out! We talked about him having hobby ADHD, about how he dabbles with many art outlets, how he found himself on audio engineering (which does sound like a perfect intersection of his interests), about his explorations with photography, and a lot more. This led us to talk about photography in RPGs, weirdest games we played, we even have weird game ideas while discussing the strange shows we have been watching. We had a great chat, and I am always delighted into having a glimpse behind people's work and philosophy. I hope you enjoy it too. So listen up, and let's get weird with Richie Buzzkill! Check out Tim's book, What's Our Problem: https://www.amazon.com/Whats-Our-Problem-Self-Help-Societies-ebook/dp/B0BTJCTR58   QUOTES: “The dictator and their little consortium have the power to do what they want, so they do and other people don't so they can't.” “It's a very disempowering thing to teach kids that this country, because there is inequality, is inherently oppressive and I think it is just demotivating.” “What concerns me about our current political environment is that we have so many hard problems ahead, big discussions we have to have as a species, and our society has to be able to have its wits about us. We have to have our wits about us going into this future where we're getting more godlike power and be wise about it because the stakes are going up.” Follow Tim Urban: Website: https://waitbutwhy.com/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/waitbutwhy  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/waitbutwhy/  Get ready to unlock your true potential and enjoy an unparalleled listening experience with our Impact Theory subscription service at https://impacttheorynetwork.supercast.com/ Sponsors: Get 20% OFF with our code IMPACT at calderalab.com/IMPACT. It is unbelievably challenging to parent a master procrastinator. Your days are filled with worry, and an ever-growing pit in your stomach as you watch them play video games, or sit on their phone amidst looming homework due dates and projects that haven't even been started yet. Often leading you to parent from a place of fear, where nagging, begging, pleading, threatening and the removal of their things is the only option you know to take. This isn't how you envisioned life when it came to raising your kids but you are at a loss for how to motivate them without such a harsh approach. If you're the parent of a teen or young adult who procrastinates, you know how heartbreaking [and let's be honest at times – frustrating] it can be to see your child struggling to meet their potential. You may feel like you've tried everything to help them, but nothing seems to make a difference or inspire them to move forward. In today's episode Jennifer discusses what works and what doesn't with a chronic procrastinator often seen in older teens and young adults but parents of younger kids should listen in as well to avoid future pitfalls. If this is a familiar scene currently in your home there is hope. We have a new course option for you – “From No to Go” ….a course specifically designed to help your teen or young adult find their motivation. Preparation is key and being flexible about the outcome is essential in negotiations. Always be willing to explore other options. Don't be emotionally attached to an outcome. Whether your perspective is from a more logical side or emotional side, it's important for you to be able to see things from the other side and consider it's validity even if it doesn't make sense at the moment. Be an expert in your field, you have to understand what you're doing. The follow-up is beyond critical, when you say you'll do something, do it.  “If you know where you wanna get to, and it's been working, continue to negotiate that way… the person who wins a negotiation is the person that's always willing to walk away.” - Steve Richman Tim Urban: Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator:https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_urban_inside_the_mind_of_a_master_procrastinator?language=en Connect with Steve Richman:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MortgageMischiefWithSteve/Website: www.vandykmortgage.com  Email: steverichman@vandykmortgage.com Connect with Steve and Jason:LinkedIn: Jason or SteveWebsite: Rewire, Inc.: Transformed Thinking Email: grow@rewireinc.com  Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine TallaAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. We're not sure there's ever been more pressure on our teens to figure out their own schedules and manage their time wisely than right now. Whatever your daughter is doing for school during a pandemic, chances are she needs to be on her A-game with her school work. Our teens balance school, work, music lessons, friends, family responsibilities, school responsibilities, sports teams, and who knows what else. It's tough! We've been doing a lot of research into simple ways to teach teens how to manage their time (hopefully without making them defensive). Listen in today to see what we've come up with.   Benefits of good time management Reduced anxiety Increased responsibility Better decision-making skills More time for family and friends Better performance at work and school More time to relax  Important Life Skills to promote good time management Work smarter not harder Take care of yourself to have adequate energy Take brief but regular breaksRecognize the emotions you're feeling and how what impact it has on your efficiency Challenge the stories you tell ourself about events Don't multitask “Multitasking is a myth” Clarify your priorities Steps parents can take to teach good time management Be a good example Give them good tools Encourage them to write down their schedule Help them prioritize Help them figure out what is most important to them based on values and commitments Help them develop routines Avoid nagging  Set limits on electronics (In a perfect world, they'd do this themselves.) 3 Books is a completely insane and totally epic 15-year-long quest to uncover the 1000 most formative books in the world. Each chapter is hosted live and in-person at the guest's preferred location by Neil Pasricha, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Awesome and The Happiness Equation. Each chapter of 3 Books uncovers and discusses the three most formative books from one of the world's most inspiring people. Sample guests include: Judy Blume, David Sedaris, Chris Anderson of TED, and the world's greatest Uber driver. Each of the 333 chapters is dropped on the exact minute of every new moon and full moon until September 1, 2031. 3 Books is an Apple "Best Of" award-winning show as well as the world's only podcast by and for book lovers, writers, makers, sellers... and librarians. For more info check out: www.3books.co Tim Urban (@waitbutwhy) is the author of the blog Wait But Why and has become one of the Internet’s most popular writers with over 1.5 million readers per month. According to Fast Company, Tim has “captured a level of reader engagement that even the new-media giants would be envious of.” Tim’s series of posts after interviewing Elon Musk has been called by Vox “the meatiest, most fascinating, most satisfying posts I’ve read in ages.” Tim’s TED Talk, Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator, has received more than 30 million views. Chapter Description: Pop quiz! Who’s the first person who comes to mind when you think of the word philosopher? Aristotle, Plato, Socrates … Karl Marx? If you asked me today, the first person that comes to my mind is Tim Urban. Because a philosopher is someone engaged with the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. Wrestling with the big questions! And sure, lots of folks are doing that. But I can’t think of anyone doing it better right now than Tim Urban. Tim Urban is co-founder and writer of the popular blog Wait Buy Why, which has over 1.5 million readers per month and scores of big-name fans including Elon Musk. Why? Because Tim has a beautifully simplistic way of distilling big, complex topics like artificial intelligence, picking a life partner, and, say, The Fermi Paradox, into simple language. He’s an incredible teacher, an incredible philosopher. His TED Talk on procrastination is a great example of this, which has over 30 million views. Tim’s intellectual curiosity is huge. Despite being a Harvard grad, Tim’s going against the grain of typical Harvard grads and spending his days writing long blog posts using simple words to explain big things. And we’re lucky enough to get a glimpse into how Tim’s brain works in Chapter 22. We discuss breaking convention, retaining curiosity, Stitches vs Band-aids, why you should let your children wear shorts in the winter, the difference between cooks and chefs, and much, much more.... Join us over avocado toast in the corner of Ludlow Coffee Supply in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Why should you let your kids wear shorts in the winter? Why is it important to separate art from the artist? How can conservatism and progressivism work together? How can we learn to break free from normalcy and follow our own paths? How can we tell if old wisdom is still useful or if it no longer applies? What’s the difference between reasoning with first principle versus reasoning by analogy? How can we learn to appreciate children’s curiosity and tendency to ask ‘why’? If someone is remorseful of something, does that mean they deserve forgiveness? How can we make things people love, instead of things people already have? Leave us a voicemail! Your message may be included in a future episode: 1-833-READ-A-LOT. Tim Urban knows that procrastination doesn't make sense, but he's never been able to shake his habit of waiting until the last minute to get things done. In this hilarious and insightful talk, Urban takes us on a journey through YouTube binges, Wikipedia rabbit holes and bouts of staring out the window -- and encourages us to think harder about what we're really procrastinating on, before we run out of time.
