A new study carried out by Fraunhofer Austria Research GmbH and refurbed, Ireland's leading online marketplace for refurbished devices, examined the number of unused devices across European households and their potential for refurbishment. The findings revealed that in Irish households, there are 7.6 million unused devices, or 1.43 old devices per person, of which 2.5 million have the potential to be refurbished and re-enter the market. Dublin City alone holds 874,830 unused smartphones, while households across Leinster account for a total of 4,219,076 old devices. In comparison, Munster has 1,373,346 unused smartphones, and Connacht holds 870,825. The study also found 642 million devices lie idle across European households, 211 million of which are suitable for professional refurbishment. The quantity of raw materials stored in these devices would allow Europe to meet its demand for metals, rare earths and other materials for several years. Speaking on the results, Peter Windischhofer, co-founder of refurbed said, "Two years ago, we commissioned Fraunhofer Austria to calculate life cycle assessment data for selected electronics, quantifying the environmental impact of refurbished vs new devices for the first time. Last year, we built a unique model with Fraunhofer that delivers scientifically verified data for thousands of refurbished phones, laptops, and tablets. Now, with this third study, we can show how much impact we can generate if consumers bring old devices back into the circular economy. This is definitely a call to action to Irish consumers." "Refurbishing smartphones offers huge potential in the circular economy," says Paul Rudorf, project lead at Fraunhofer Austria. "Devices destined to become e-waste are reintroduced into the usage cycle, reducing e-waste, extending product life and lessening the need for critical raw materials. It also minimises the environmental damage caused by mining and production, while offering affordable alternatives to consumers. Refurbishment is essential for preserving resources and promoting sustainability in electronics." On average, European households hold around €8 in the form of unused old smartphones. While this may not sound like much on an individual level, with 642 million unused devices in total, it adds up to a material value of €1.57 billion sitting in Europeans 'junk drawers'' across the EU. On average, buyback programs offer around €100 for devices aged between 2.8 and 4 years, meaning this results in an untapped market value of approximately €6.42 billion. Aside from financial savings, refurbishing unused devices and extending their use could also save the EU about 24 million tons of CO? equivalent and reduce virtual water usage by 8.5 billion cubic meters over the next 3 years. Since 2024, refurbed has provided a trade-in service in Ireland, helping minimise e-waste levels and repurpose old tech. refurbed is playing an active role, allowing Irish consumers to recycle their old devices, give them a new purpose and recover the valuable raw materials they contain. The refurbishment process is continuously monitored and refined, setting a higher benchmark for quality in the refurbished tech industry. To date, refurbed has saved over 270,000 tonnes of CO2, 900 tonnes of e-waste, and 94 billion litres of water since its founding in 2017, and has planted over 6.6 million trees. 65 homes in Clare have been returned to their former glory under the Vacant Property Refurbishment Scheme. Since it was launched back in June of 2022, over €3.7m worth of grants have been paid out in this county. The scheme applies to properties built before 2008 that have been unoccupied for at least two years, with up to €50,000 funding available for vacant buildings and €70,000 for derelict dwellings. Deputy Mayor of Clare Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard believes the grant could be even more successful by extending the time limit for completion of works.

Clare County Council is set to write to the Housing Minister to request the build time requirements of the Croí Conaithe scheme be extended. It follows a motion raised by Ennis Councillor Mary Howard at this month's meeting of the local authority which took place this week, which called for the scheme's allotted period for works to be increased from 18 months to 24 months. 149 applications have been approved so far in this county for the scheme which which provides assistance to those turning a house or building which has been vacant for two years at the time of application into a permanent home or rental property. Fine Gael Councillor Howard says when dealing with an older building, certain jobs simply take longer to complete.
It's claimed Clare people have a much greater role to play in breathing life back into local towns and villages. At the end of last year, the local authority was in receipt of 279 applications for Croí Conaithe funding, which can provide up to €50,000 for the restoration of vacant dwellings and €70,000 for derelict buildings. Subject to approval, this could lead to a potential investment of up to €7m to refurbish homes across the county. Newmarket-On-Fergus based Fianna Fáil local election candidate David Griffin believes greater participation in the scheme is key to tackling the housing crisis.

A former Mayor of Ennis claims the county town has been embarrassed by the recent deterioration of a prominent sports and recreational facility. So far this year 82,000 people have entered Lees Road John O'Sullivan Park in Ennis, with 4,200 vehicles and 400 pedestrians arriving on a weekly basis. However recent maintenance issues at the site has seen both national and provincial athletic tournaments diverted elsewhere. Clare County Council has now applied for a €250,000 government sports capital grant to rectify the matter and Ballybeg Fianna Fáil Councillor Claire Colleran Molloy says this can't come soon enough.

James Rigg is CEO of Trojan Electronics in Wales, and has a wealth of expertise in value-adding circular solutions for electrical and electronics manufacturers and retailers. James has built on his experience across retail and more recently, leading growth across the Buy It Direct Group, and is now focussed on expanding Trojan Electronics Circular Solutions to help retailers and manufacturers recover value and at the same time, reduce e-waste. Trojan provides services to high-profile brands, and we'll hear about some examples. E-waste – the waste from end-of-life or unwanted electricals and electronics – is the world's fastest growing waste stream, and is forecast to grow by 30% over this decade. The Trojan Electronics team provides electrical repair, refurb and resell services in several ways – through their client's own marketplace stores, through direct integration into the clients' ecommerce stores, and through Amazon, eBay, Tik Tok, Wowcher and others. Trojan is a £20M turnover business based in Swansea, south Wales, employing 150 staff in a purpose-built warehouse housing repairs and all its other services, and refurbishing over half a million items each year. Ahead of our conversation, James sent me some customer research, digging into people's attitudes to refurbished products, with some very encouraging findings, and we'll hear more about that in the conversation. I can share a few of the standout figures now: over a third of the respondents had bought a refurbished or repaired electrical item in the previous 12 months, including smartphones, laptops or tablets, and household appliances. Only 1% of those people had a bad experience with that purchase, and almost 80% said they'd buy refurbished in the future. And even though people knew they'd bought a refurbished item, 24% of customers couldn't tell the difference from the equivalent new product. The survey includes some market research, highlighting predictions for the growth of refurbished electronics – the market was valued at around $85bn in 2021 and is forecast to grow at 12% each year over the next decade. James is happy to share the research, and I've included a link to the research paper in the shownotes. James also shared information from Trojan's clients who are offering refurbished products alongside new versions, and the results are very exciting. However, at some clients, attitudes are slow to change, with people reluctant to make the transition to selling refurbished products as well as new versions, and James explains some of the reasons behind this.

Refurbs, whether they're for profit or for your home, are difficult, stressful, and tiring. If you're refurbishing a property for profit, you may have to secure financing, work with investors, and pay them back on strict deadlines. On the other hand, when you're refurbishing your own home, you're dealing with a unique set of issues that can get overwhelming very quickly.I recently completed ‘'Project Home'' - my very own home refurb - so I'll be sharing all the issues that sprung up and the lessons I've learned.Whether you're a seasoned professional or a first-time DIY-er, I'll be providing you with valuable insights and tips to help you succeed in your own home refurbishment.---About your host, Tej:Tej graduated from King's' College London with a BSc Biochemistry in 2014, he then pursued a career in Medical Education and Marketing. Soon after his second job… he was fired! A moment of relief and freedom was what he felt, not sure what his mother felt when he told her he was jobless at 23…He then went in search of a more ethical path, a business he could set up where the reward was equal to the work put in. “If they are making pounds, why am I making pennies?” - was his thought process, not happy with slow progression and bureaucracy (& having to wear smart shoes everyday). This lead him to opening a Recruitment business (not sure where the ethics went) which doubled in profit every year, for 4 years. He hated it. Golden handcuffs they call it.Fortunately, he used the cash he'd built up from that business, to educate himself in Property Investing. Soon, he'd stopped the business and transitioned into Property Investment full time. He then had a slow start -Purchasing 15 properties in his first 9 months, using over £650,000 of Investor Finance, he built a £1,200,000 property portfolio and created £30,000 of profit from flips. This gave him ‘financial freedom', but it was the most stressful period of his life. Growing quickly is very painful. He recently made £95,000 from two flips.Let's not forget that his Podcast grew to be the most-reviewed UK Property Podcast, peaking at 4,000 unique downloads per episode. His Podcast (Tej Talks) now sits at 800,000 downloads in over 120 countries and has 500 reviews, rated 5/5.Tej InvestsTej TalkseLearning Hosted on Acast. To listen to the story of the renovation project of the Hotel ***** Les Roches Blanches in Cassis by Monika Kappel, read by Esther for Charlotte Depondt. Built in 1887 on the sea front, this former mansion takes its name from the limestone rocks that line the coastline from Cassis to Marseille. Walt Disney World has a serious problem in Star Wars Galaxy's Edge and there's no easy solution. Our take on this, plus the Garden Rocks concert line-up, a lengthy Disney pool closure and top picks for Valentine's goodies at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.Do Disney Parks Have a Star Wars Problem? There's trouble brewing in Galaxy's Edge and it's not coming from the Dark Side. After months of persistent rumors and speculation about the value and experience of Disney's Galactic Starcruiser, Disney has announced that it was forced to cancel several Galactic Starcruiser dates in the summer and fall months due to low occupancy, which could be a troubling sign for the hotel's future. People who had booked were offered half-off to book again on a future date. Speculation has been everything from the cost, to the characters involved to the repeatability of the experience. For me, it's also an issue of the guest experience, or rather the pricey and intended immersive experience being ruined by obnoxious and other annoying guests who typically ruin things for others on virtually any Disney attraction. This type of behavior has gotten worse since Covid as the entitled few have been frequently ruining it for all--so much so that Disney has changed its acceptable guest behavior policies and publicized the fact. No matter what the reason, is there any way to fix the problem? For us, it's not the price alone: it's the experience. If you're paying that kind of money for an immersive experience, the risk of having it jeopardized by someone filming all the time and not taking part, is a no-go. In my opinion, Disney should ban all guests from bringing phones or any kind of devices, except in your room. Anyone acting out of accepted standards should be jettisoned through the airlock. Make this clear up front. --Garden Rocks Concert Lineup for the 2023 EPCOT International Flower & Garden FestivalThe Garden Rocks Concert Series Line-up is coming into view for the upcoming EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival in March.
