Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageJeff Annison and Paul Scanlan, Emmy-winning co-founders of the world's first fan-owned entertainment company, Legion M, join host Kevin Goetz for a conversation about disrupting industries, building communities, and betting on the audience. Annison and Scanlan pioneered mobile television at MobiTV and launched the very first equity crowdfunding campaign in U.S. history. The duo have spent two decades proving that the audience is the most powerful force in entertainment.Chicago, Boston, and a Love of Film (01:48): Paul Scanlan traces his passion for filmmaking to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and to a family trip to Cape Cod where seeing Jaws at age five both terrified and captivated him. Jeff Annison arrived at storytelling through an unlikely path: a mechanical engineering degree at UCLA and a series of screenwriting classes taken on a lark.MobiTV: Putting Television on a Flip Phone (07:18): The two founders recount how a mutual friend with a micro-display technology brought them together in 1999 to build what would become MobiTV, the first company to stream live television to mobile phones.Colossal (25:49): Legion M's first major move was a small P&A investment alongside the distributor Neon on the Anne Hathaway film Colossal. With just 3,500 investors and a million dollars, they organized screenings and community meetups.Community as Marketing Engine (29:54): Annison and Scanlan explain how Legion M's 60,000-plus investors are an organic grassroots marketing force. As Scanlan puts it, communicating with their community costs nothing but can drive millions in box office.Saving Coyote vs. Acme (35:25): One of the most discussed projects in recent Hollywood history found new life through Catchup Entertainment. Legion M is partnering on its release, and the trailer has already surpassed 50 million views.Advice for the New Filmmaker (43:22): Annison urges emerging creators to start with the end in mind, thinking not just about the key scene but about how to communicate a story in a brief window of attention. Scanlan adds a hard truth: the industry is more entrepreneurial than most people expect, and selling to a major studio is rarely the path.On Being on the Side of the Audience (56:44): Annison reflects on what keeps him grounded amid industry uncertainty and the rise of AI: the belief that no matter what technology produces, only human beings pay to watch movies. Building a company on the side of the audience, he argues, is the most defensible position in entertainment.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Jeff Annison and Paul ScanlanProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Legion M:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_MWebsite: https://legionm.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/legionmofficial/For more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com
396 Mortal Kombat 2 Invincible Finale Boys Backlash Flight of the ConchordsDoom Scrolling IntroSteph kicks things off with a Tip Top canned cocktail (Jungle Bird) while the Foos recap a packed weekend: Joe's work family-day picnic vibes, notes for next year (more trucks, coffee cart dreams, boba cart fantasies), and a throwback hang with old band friends at Richie's birthday — the same house where they used to throw teenage ragers. Joe lands a darkly perfect joke: the only time people call you “young” at 40 is at your funeral. Then Florida delivers, as always: a homeless man allegedly catches a felony after throwing an open ketchup packet at a Good Samaritan who checked on him — with the real story being the drugs they reportedly found afterward. Florida stays undefeated.Geeking Out is stacked: the Foos review Mortal Kombat 2 (May 8) and declare it's basically a full-on Johnny Cage movie — bigger scale, more classic characters, more fan service, and fight scenes that feel like the game's arenas brought to life. They roast a friend for making it halfway through the movie before realizing he thought he was watching Street Fighter. They also hit the Invincible season 4 finale fallout: Mark's trauma, Thragg stepping up as the looming big threat, Viltrumite chaos, and the internet's meme machine going into overdrive (mustaches included). Then it's The Boys discourse: the newest episode getting the lowest rating of the series, pacing complaints, and the show flirting with burnout — plus the wild release idea of the series finale in 4DX one day early… and the local showings basically selling out instantly. From there it's rapid-fire: Green Day's upcoming comedy movie Nimrods (Legion M involvement), the Swatch x Audemars Piguet “Royal Pop” collab causing real-world chaos (lines, cops, pepper spray) over a watch you can't even buy online, and a Mortal Kombat trivia quiz where Steph nearly goes perfect… until the razor-hat question exposes the Kung Lao/Liu Kang mix-up.Here's What I Would Do wraps with two dilemmas:Tori (Burbank) thinks a married coworker is crossing the line with “work spouse” energy and wants to shut it down without workplace fallout.Alyssa (Costa Mesa) agreed to location sharing with her boyfriend and now feels watched — and the Foos call it what it is: modern convenience turning into surveillance real fast. Before the outro, they shout out the Flight of the Conchords show at the Greek (their first time in years), with surprise moments and guests — and plenty of “Netflix is a joke” energy.ChaptersDoom Scrolling IntroIntroTip Top Jungle Bird canned cocktail + weekend recapWork family day picnic notes coffee cart boba cart talkOld band friends Richie birthday throwback rager houseFlorida man felony over ketchup packet + drugs foundGeeking Out Mortal Kombat 2 review Johnny Cage movieFriend thought it was Street Fighter until halfway throughInvincible season 4 finale trauma Thragg Viltrumites memesThe Boys lowest rated episode discourse pacing burnoutThe Boys finale in 4DX one day early sold out scrambleGreen Day movie Nimrods Legion M summer releaseSwatch Audemars Piguet Royal Pop collab chaos lines copsMortal Kombat trivia quiz Steph almost perfectHere's What I Would Do Married coworker flirting Tori BurbankHere's What I Would Do Location sharing feels like surveillance Alyssa Costa MesaFlight of the Conchords at the Greek recapOutro + Doom Scrolling OutroMortal Kombat 2, Johnny Cage, Invincible season 4 finale, Thragg, Viltrumites, The Boys backlash, 4DX finale, Green Day Nimrods, Legion M, Swatch Audemars Piguet Royal Pop, Florida ketchup felony, Flight of the Conchords Greek Theatre, work spouse, location sharing
Occasionally, someone will ask me if I think they should invest in a movie. My answer is, invariably, the same: you should only invest in movies you really believe in; you should understand that even if you invest, the movie will likely never get made because most movies never do; and you should only invest if you're willing to lose everything you put in, because even those movies that do get made tend to show a loss.I lead with this because today I'm talking to Jeff Annison of Legion M, a production and distribution company built on the idea that fan investments are a great way to both develop seed capital and drive enthusiasm at theaters. Legion M is not a fly-by-night company and has a number of productions under its belt, including My Dead Friend Zoe and The Man in the White Van. Jeff will be the first to tell you that investing is risky and should only be done if you're comfortable with losing it all, though he obviously has staked his claim with Legion M and put no small amount of his own capital at risk. And they've certainly seen some successes with films like the Nic Cage-starring Mandy (one of my favorites of the 2010s).We discussed how changes to investment laws in 2016 helped spur a shift in indie fundraising from crowdfunding models to models that allow individuals to earn equity in the movies they contribute to the production of. We also discussed the Legion M Film Fund, their distribution-minded arm that provides last-in, first-out money for films seeking a domestic release. And we chatted about the effort to build a consistent fan base via the cultivation of retail investors.

Jeff, along with co-founder Paul Scanlan, established Legion M to partner with prominent Hollywood creators, ranging from independent filmmakers to major studios. Their aim is to produce an array of captivating movies, TV shows, and digital content. What sets Legion M apart is its groundbreaking approach to ownership - it is the first-ever media company designed to be owned by fans. Leveraging innovative equity crowdfunding laws, anyone can now invest as little as $100 to own a stake in the company. In this episode, we had the pleasure of interviewing the extraordinary comic writer and editor, Chris Robinson, who has an impressive background at Marvel Comics and has also worked on several of his own projects. We delved into his newest and highly anticipated project, "Werewolf Frankenstein," set to launch on Kickstarter very soon. Trust us, this is a project you won't want to miss – the concept and artwork are simply mind-blowing, and Chris graciously shared some captivating images with us. Moreover, Chris is also the editor for another remarkable venture, brought to life by the fan-owned company, Legion-M. This project is based on the incredible life of Robert Smalls, a true bad-ass who was once a slave, bought his own freedom, daringly commandeered a riverboat, and liberating even more slaves. His audacious acts didn't stop there as he later entered the world of politics. I think it's safe to say this is one of the darkest times in Wow's history. Between gameplay a lot of people are unhappy with and all the actiblizz sexual harrassment problems coming out, wow isn't as popular as it once was. I just want to say thank you to everybody who is here with us, listening to the show. I know there's at least a couple of you who don't play anymore but still listen, and I want to say thank you. I have hope that one day wow will be back on a stronger leg and our community can grow healthier. Thank you for being here. Okay now back to the toilet humor. It's LGBTQ+ Pride Month and Reverend Sumner welcomes one of his closest friends, Legion M's Mandy Bardisbanian to Hard Agree. Mandy B is a tireless, take-no-prisoners, stamp-the-accelerator-to-one-hundred creativity machine. Born & raised in two of the USA's most socially & politically conservative states, Oklahoma & Texas, Mandy B parachuted into Hollywood ten years ago without friends, a job or a place to live. Within days, she'd talked her way into a receptionist job at Hot Topic's head office and, a decade later, she's the VP of Licensing & Merchandise at Legion M, married to an equally-talented wife. She's a property developer, the manager of @queerboiband, the dedicated foster parent to a growing army of abandoned dogs and the 4' 9” standard-bearer for relentless hard work and empathic self-belief. Her inspiring tale is not for the faint of heart but it IS the best example Sumner knows of 21st century never-surrender self-actualization. And there's no better person to tell that story than two-fisted Mandy B herself… Follow Mandy B on Social Media: https://www.instagram.com/mandybardisbanian https://twitter.com/mbardisbanian Check out Legion M: https://legionm.com/ Follow Boi Band on Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/queerboiband/ https://www.instagram.com/queerboiband/ https://www.queerboiband.com/ Follow Sumner on Social Media: http://twitter.com/sumnarr “Golden – The Hard Agree Theme” written and recorded for the podcast by DENIO Follow DENIO on Social Media: http://facebook.com/denioband/ http://soundcloud.com/denioband/ http://twitter.com/denioband/ http://instagram.com/denioband/ Follow the Spoilerverse on Social Media: http://facebook.com/spoilercountry/ http://twitter.com/spoiler_country http://instagram.com/spoilercountry/ Kenric Regan: http://twitter.com/XKenricX John Horsley: http://twitter.com/y2cl http://instagram.com/y2cl/ http://y2cl.net http://eynesanthology.com Did you know the Spoilerverse has a YouTube channel? https://youtube.com/channel/UCstl1UHQVUC85DrCagF-wuQ Support the Spoilerverse on Patreon: http://patreon.com/spoilercountry

In Episode 12 on The Millionaire Student Show, Sashin Govender dissects the Pain (Past), Price (Journey) and Prize (Result) of Jeff Annison and Paul Scanlan. Forbes included them in a "Names You Need to Know" list in 2011, largely for creating the mobile video space with MobiTV and launching the first mobile television network with Sprint in 2003. ABOUT PAUL ANNISON AND PAUL SCANLAN : Jeff Annison is an American businessperson who was a cofounder and CEO of Underground Labs, a product development studio that built mobile apps, websites, and enterprise products for clients including AT&T, Sprint, NFL, SEC, ACC, Universal Music, Warner Music, Sony Music, Diet Coke, Paramount Pictures, and more. Underground Labs also created the New York Rock Exchange, a first-of-its-kind marketplace that allowed fans to own a piece of a song. On the other hand Jeff's business partner, Paul Scanlan began his career in sales at telecommunications firm and later co-founded a boutique ad agency. He plays an active board role in a select group of innovative tech and media companies. He was also a founding board member of New York Rock Exchange, global board member for Haufe, and as a founding board member for GetClose. Paul's entrepreneurial vision is balanced with an effective make-it-happen approach. In 1999 both Jeff and Paul formulated MobiTV. Six years after that their team were awarded an Engineering Emmy for bringing live broadcasts to cellphones. They also helped raise more than $100 million in investment for the company. In 2016 they both then went on to formulate Legion M, which purported to be the industry's first fan-owned media company. In which they let fans invest in and be part of the creation of the company's media content. It drives revenue through partnerships with creators, independent filmmakers, and established Hollywood studios. In 2018 the company had raised $3 million in funding from more than 7,000 fan owners. After(barely) surviving the 12-hour drive from Los Angeles to Park City, Utah, Film Threat has finally returned to the Sundance Film Festival! Chris Gore regales Sundance Virgins Anthony Ray Bench, Documentary filmmaker Tom Bennett, and Film Threat writer/critic Matt Passantino about his first time in Park City covering the festival. What would happen to Hollywood if you gave the keys to the kingdom to the film fans themselves? That's the intriguing premise behind Legion M, the first fan-funded studio.
This week is a little something different, as Scott sits down with guest Paul Scanlan from "Legion M" to talk about the amazing strides being made in the entertainment industry.
