Driving talent only gets you so far in professional motorsport — if you want to make it, you'll need the full package… Plus a healthy dose of luck.In this episode, professional driver Billy Johnson gives us his thoughts on the challenges of turning driving into a job, the best way to spend 10k as a track newbie, why the Skyline GT-R is seriously overrated, the less glamorous realities of 24-hour racing, and much more.Use “BILLY50” to get $50 off HPA's Race Driving Fundamentals course: https://hpcdmy.co/racebBilly Johnson is a professional driving coach, race driver, and factory development driver who has had a long career in the game despite his young age. We start by discussing the path Billy took to be able to drive for a living full-time, despite not coming from a motorsport family. Predictably, this involves a deep dive into karts and his progression through the ranks towards working for Ford developing the GT, GT350, and GT500. Billy has also raced for Ford in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and NASCAR, as well as many other prestigious competitions all over the globe, meaning he's able to give some great insight into what it takes to drive these gruelling competitions and the extremely long stints they sometimes demand. This discussion provides a fascinating insight into the cutthroat world of motorsport at the higher levels, giving us a much better idea of what it takes to rise above all the other equally talented drivers out there gunning for the same seat. The conversation also covers the cars themselves. With Billy's experience behind the wheel of extremely rapid time-attack Honda NSXs, we have to ask him what makes this 90s icon so good, and, in his opinion, why it's so superior to another popular time attack weapon — the Skyline GT-R.With some interesting discussion around motorsport-level driving aids, simulators, and the best beginner track car for under 10 and 50k (is Miata always the answer?), this episode is packed with great info!Follow Billy here:IG: @billyjracingFB: Billy J RacingX: @billyjracingLI: Billy JohnsonWWW: billyjohnsonracing.comDon't forget, you can use “BILLY50” to get $50 off HPA's Race Driving Fundamentals course: https://hpcdmy.co/racebTimestamps:4:04 How did you develop an interest in cars?13:38 Having an understanding of engineering as a driver18:49 Why are karts a normal stepping stone into a motorsport career?20:28 What is race craft?31:18 What is it that makes time attack an interesting form of racing?39:24 Difficulties of going from one warm-up lap to a flying lap in time attack?44:21 What do I do to improve my lap times?54:28 Time Attack NSX and its handling1:07:14 Engine package in the NSX1:09:08 Oil starvation and dry sumps1:15:53 NSX aero package1:18:18 Driver aids1:32:40 24-hour endurance racing, physical and mental fitness1:37:13 Tyre management over a long stint1:44:29 Tips for novice drivers taking their car to the track1:50:41 Does sim driving improve driver skills?1:56:32 What is a good entry-level track car?2:03:29 Final three questions

If so, what is his/her name?:LilyIf you've made improvements to your classic car or restored it, what work have you done?:Before the engine blew up, only an electronic ignition but currently rebuilding the engine with a paxton supercharger and in the process of having a custom gas cap emblem. What plans do you have for improvements/restoration/modification of your classic car?:My plans for my mustang is to continue to customize it around the cobra logo Peter Brock did design and taking inspiration from the 65/66 racing Shelby GT350 but keeping in mind the 67 design. So more cobra logos, maybe a custom side fender cobra logo, to make GT350 competition seat replicas, Shelby drop, replace my tach with a vintage cobra one, custom cobra shift knob. In the future, my plan would be to improve my suspension system and get back my 3.00 rear gear ratio.Olivier IG account67.mustang.fastback.cobrahttps://www.instagram.com/67.mustang.fastback.cobra/Vanilla Sky (movie)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0259711/Instagram@mustangpodcasthttps://www.instagram.com/mustangpodcast/@fordpickuppodcast https://www.instagram.com/fordpickuppodcast/Sponsored by: National Parts Depotwww.npdlink.comWith 4 warehouses nationwide, you'll get your parts fast!Keep it safe, keep it rollin' and keep it on the road. Ford's Mustang Shelby GT350R goes back to its road-going-race-car roots. Like its base-model-variant the Shelby GT350, The GT350R is powered by the 526 hp, flat-plane-crank-equipped 5.2-liter V8. Backed exclusively by a six-speed manual transmission, the hardcore-focused pony car is a true enthusiast's machine. Taking the GT350 further with the R-model, carbon fiber wheels, more aggressive aero and a missing rear seat, the Shelby GT350R is a toy pointed directly at your local track rat. And it's right on target. On this special episode of Quick Spin, Robin Warner takes you along for the ride in a 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R Heritage Edition. Warner walks you around the GT350R to give you the details of this special Mustang before taking you along for a drive. A new copy of the Mecum Magazine is on virtual newsstands, and in this On The Move, hosts Matt Avery and John Kraman dive right into detailing what they penned in this latest November issue. In his At the Redline column, John looks through what he calls ‘rose-colored glasses’ and details his insight as an industry insider on the collector car hobby from the last couple of months and his optimism moving forward. Meanwhile, Matt, in his Free Revs column, spotlights the story of one collector’s 1966 Ford Mustang, purchased to rekindle fond memories of old including a special Chicago wedding and deployment to Germany with the Army’s 3rd Armored Division. Matt also discusses his deep-dive feature looking at the creation of one ultra-hot hauler from the 1990s: the 1991 GMC Syclone. The multipage spread covers the truck’s creation and some of the lesser-known aspects of the rig, including the batch sent to Saudi Arabia, the Indy 500 pace vehicle and the Marlboro Edition. From there, the guys go into some standouts from the upcoming Dallas Auction, taking place October 15-17. Consignments catching their eyes include the third C8 Corvette to be consigned for the event, an exotic and rare 2017 Pagani Huayra Roadster and a 1965 Shelby GT350. From that classic, the Shelby conversation is brought up to recent times with Matt sharing Ford’s news that it’ll be discontinuing the current GT350 and GT350R models. Matt and John discuss what that means for their value and some ideas about future Blue Oval performance offerings. Staying on the checkered flag theme, Matt shares the latest from Mercedes, including specs on the 2021 AMG GT Black series. The car draws heavily on the current AMG GT3 race car and features the most powerful V-8 engine built by AMG, delivering 720 HP. The impressive specs won’t come cheap with estimations putting the price in the $400,000 range. John chimes in, adding more color to the conversation by sharing that, while expensive, the Black label usually adds value to Mercedes vehicles when they cross the block. Wrapping up the segment, John shares a bit of race coverage, including the latest from NASCAR’s Talladega event and how INDY cars will be using Honda and Chevy powertrains for two more years before a potential switch to hybrid offerings. In Segment 2, Matt has a special conversation with Scott Tallon, Director of Jeep North America. The topic is focused in on the Grand Wagoneer Concept, one of the hottest new car reveals from this fall. Scott shares some of the concept’s development, technology and how memories of past Wagoneers factored into the design and inspiration. A few hints are given about what’s in store for when the model hits showrooms including what may be lurking under the hood. Rounding out the show, Mike Baker, Director of Transportation, Mecum Auto Transport, stops by the On The Move studios to talk transport. Specifically, he talks about how MAT keeps things moving, quite literally, transporting thousands of precious vehicles around the country. He shares details about the fine-tuning of logistics, answers to common questions and some best practices for getting a special ride ready for the trip on the MAT big rig.

I own a 1993 Mustang GT Convertible and a 2005 Mustang GTWhat do you do for a living and is it related to classic cars or Mustangs?
