100 home care workers were in Albany on Tuesday for a Supreme Court hearing on their case against the Department of Labor. The NYSDOL, despite admitting that the Chinese-American Planning Council has engaged in massive wage theft against workers, has decided to drop the case after years of investigation, citing a new rule related to arbitration. The workers are asking the Attorney General to investigate possible collusion, since the former head of the CPC recently took a high level position with Gov. Hochul. Anne Kochman of the Ain't I a Women Campaign and the NMASS (National Mobilization Against Sweatshop) talks with Mark Dunlea for Hudson Mohawk Magaine.

Killed Women is a group formed of relatives of women who were murdered in domestic abuse situations. They are campaigning to get the minimum sentence for domestic homicide raised, so it's the same as if the victim was killed on the street. Julie Devey, a member of Killed Women whose daughter Poppy was stabbed to death in bed, joins Nuala McGovern alongside Clare Ward KC, who led last year's independent review into Domestic Homicide Sentencing. When and if a woman chooses to have children is becoming one of the defining issues of our time. It's an issue of great concern to Emmanuel Macron, the President of France - where there were 1.8 births for every woman last year. He's announced plans to incentivise people to have more children including reforming parental leave and free fertility checks for everyone at the age of 25. To discuss this Nuala is joined by Stefania Marassa, Associate Professor of Economics at Cergy Paris University and Sarah Harper, Professor of Gerontology at the University of Oxford.Last week, a chain of pharmacies in Sweden banned the sale of anti-aging skincare products to customers under 15. The measures come amid a growing trend of young girls' interest in high-end skincare products, after seeing them used by influencers on YouTube and TikTok. Nuala speaks to Monika Magnusson, The CEO of Apotek Hjärtat, the company which introduced the age restriction, and Abby Robbins, a mother from the UK, who has first-hand experience of this trend. In the second part of our series Breaking The Cycle the SHiFT guide Eva has received a crisis call from one of the young people she works with. Though she's worried about him she's pleased that he reached out, it shows he is beginning to trust her. Jo Morris reports from SHiFT in Greater Manchester. It's a new approach to supporting teenagers at risk of getting into serious trouble. Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Lottie Garton

Ep. Br#002 The 2017 elections were lauded for their cognizance of the historically bleak presence of women in the political sphere of Nepal, to overcome this, the State mandated a Quota reserve of 40.4% of all nominee seats for women. The policy affirmed the presence and participation of Nepali women in politics, as approximately 14,000 women were elected into different positions in the Nepali Government. In this episode of The Brief: PEI colleague Khushi Hang sits with Sumina Rai Karki to discuss the latest paper she co-authored, “Beyond Capacity”. As the tenure of the first set of elected officials in this particular inclusion quota comes to an end, Sumina Rai Karki et al. gauge the effectiveness of the affirmative action policies for women against the backdrop of Nepali patriarchal psycho-social contexts in their paper “Beyond Capacity”. The two explore what gendered implications exist in the informal or unofficial aspects of Nepali elections that hinder women's chances at merit-based political opportunities during candidacy and their agency once they assume office. Sumina shares their findings on the challenges that limit the supply of politically ambitious women and signals the need for smarter policy interventions from the State and Development Partners that address the barriers that prevent women from fulfilling the space and responsibilities of the quota. Sumina Karki is a development professional and researcher with ten years of experience in gender equity, social inclusion, governance, and peacebuilding. Currently, she is the Assistant Director of Social Development Programs at the Asia Foundation Nepal office. She is a founding member of Chaukath, a feminist collective that organized the Vote for Women Campaign and several feminist reading sessions along with March as Women in collaboration with Martin Chautari.

Ep. 60 Robynne MurphyForty years ago, director Robynne Murphy, one of the leaders of Wollongong's 1980-1994 Jobs for Women Campaign, joined hundreds of migrant/working class women to take  on  Australia's most powerful  company BHP – and initially they seemed to have won. But when the 1983 steel slump devastated the city's economy,  the women  were forced  into the courtroom and onto the streets to face a prolonged battle for equality. Her film, Women of Steel, documents this journey....from an insiders perspective. An extraordinary tale of strength, endurance, and resilience. The case went all the way to the High Court and was the first class action this country had seen. It offers inspiration to those who seek justice and equality against seemingly impossible odds today.#Reallyinterestingwomen #RIW #robynnemurphy  #womenofsteel #steelworkers #sexualdiscrimination #filmmaker #director #BHP #socialjustice #womensmovement #womensagenda #futurewomen #profoundwomen #womenofinfluence #womenofimpact #womenintheworld #unwomen #extraordinarywomen #womensequality #generationwomen #womensleadership

In the annals of working class history in this country, the Jobs for Women campaign has, quite rightly, gone down as the stuff of legend. Beginning in 1980, and centred around the right of women to work at the Port Kembla steelworks in Wollongong, owned and operated at the time by Australian Iron & Steel, a subsidiary of BHP, the bitter struggle would carry on throughout the entire decade of the 1980's, eventually ending in a crucial, historic victory for working class women, not only in the steel industry, but throughout the country. Robynne Murphy is an activist, filmmaker, and retired steelworker. She was central to organising the Jobs for Women campaign, and is the director of Women of Steel, a documentary film chronicling this important struggle, one from which younger activists can learn a great deal.

Many young people have underlying heart conditions with no symptoms. In fact, the most common condition that can cause Sudden Cardiac Arrest is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, or HCM, and as many as 1 in 500 people have this heart condition. ECG's can detect past silent heart attacks in adults that may put them at greater risk for future severe cardiac issues. Michaela Gagne, Miss Massachusetts 2006, competed for the title of Miss America 2007 with her platform titled, Heart Health: Listen, Learn, and Live, because she was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition and had undergone surgery for an implantable cardioverter defibrillator at the age of 17.
