Joining Stuart in our Salford studio are Charlie Higson. After writing several books in the bestselling 'Young Bond' series, Charlie has written his first Bond for Adults. Stand up Bilal Zafar's new show 'Imposter' is about a once harmonious house-share that goes very wrong and Pravesh Kumar has written 'Frankie Goes to Bollywood', a new musical about an everyday girl from Milton Keynes plucked from obscurity to live the life of a bollywood star.Music this week comes from English Teacher, dubbed 2024's hottest new guitar band, and tik-tok sensation, classical guitarist Alexandra Whittingham.Presenter: Stuart Maconie Producer: Jessica TreenCHARLIE HIGSON Charlie Higson is an author, actor, comedian and writer for radio and television. He is the author of five beloved Young Bond books, starting with Silverfin in 2005. He's also the author of the ‘Enemy' series of Young adult Zombie adventures and the crime thriller ‘Whatever Gets You Through The Night'. He's also one of the brains behind one of the best comedy series of the 90's, ‘The Fast Show', which recently completed a 30th anniversary tour.A New Bond for a new Monarch, Charlie Higson's first ‘Adult' Bond – On His Majesty's Secret Service was written in double quick time for the coronation and is inspired by researching his history podcast. Higson's Bond is very much a man of 2023 – he's in tune with his gut biome, but he's still got the car, the gadgets and the girl.ENGLISH TEACHER Leeds based ‘English Teacher' have been hailed as 2024's hottest new guitar band, but they've spent time honing their craft - they've been playing together since meeting at the University of Leeds at 2018. In April they released their debut album, This Could Be Texas. Fresh from from touring America, they are vocalist Lily Fontaine, guitarist Lewis Whiting, drummer Douglas Frost, and bassist Nicholas Eden.PRAVESH KUMAR Back in the year 2000 armed with a credit card, Pravesh Kumar started the Rifco theatre company with an aim to tell accessible stories about British Asian communities like the one he grew up in in slough. Rifco's shows include the musical Britain's Got Bhangra, The Deranged Marriage and the film Little English. Along the way, Pravesh was awarded an MB for his contribution to British Theatre. His latest musical is ‘Frankie Goes to Bollywood' – the story of Frankie, played by Laila Zaidi, a normal girl plucked from obscurity in Milton Keynes to be the latest Bollywood star. Frankie is taken in by the glamour, a romance with leading man Raju King and a rivalry with a fellow Bollywood actress no longer deemed young enough.ALEXANDRA WHITTINGHAM Manchester-born Guitarist Alexandra Whittingham started with humble beginnings performing covers of Avril Lavigne and auditioning for Blackpool's Got Talent. Since then she has become a viral sensation through videos of her performing breathtaking classical arrangements on her guitar.Fresh off of signing with a major music label, Decca, she's here to tell us about her journey to becoming a revered guitarist and why it's important that classical music is accessible to everyone.BILAL ZAFARSharing a house can be an unpredictable experience, we've all heard about ‘nightmare' housemates. In Bilal Zafar's new show ‘Imposter' he tells the story of his old housemate, a story of compulsive lying, escalating threats and minty hot chocolate. Bilal is a ‘wry storyteller'; his previous shows are ‘Zafarcakes', about a joke on twitter that got out of hand, and the people who couldn't take a joke and ‘Care', about looking after wealthy residents in a care home, for minimum wage. He's also active on the Twitch streaming platform where he plays a manager from the game Pro Evolution Soccer 5 to an enthusiastic audience of ‘Assistant Managers'. Bilal won the new act of the year award in 2016 and was nominated for best Newcomer at the Edinburgh comedy awards
Charlie Higson, author of Young Bond novels and last year's On His Majesty's Secret Service, provided thoughts about the longevity of the James Bond character in a weekend essay in The Guardian.

It's a 'Red Letter Day' here in the Good Listening To Show 'Clearing', as I welcome a personal comedy hero to the Show! Delighted to welcome Charles Murray Higson - aka Charlie Higson - born in 1958 in Frome and billed as "That man off of The Fast Show" and credited by The Daily Mail as being both "An idiot and a disgrace!"Charlie is life-long comedy foil of the likes of Paul Whitehouse, Mark Williams, John Thompson, Arabella Wier (& the now sadly departed Caroline Aherne) who together make up the splendid ensemble and co-creators of the iconic British TV Comedy Classic, "The Fast Show". Within a week of our recording together "The Fast Show" is all set to go on a smash-hit SOLD OUT tour of the UK as a stage-show. (And listen as a little bit of wee comes out (!) as Charlie offers me a ticket on the Guest list, when The Fast Show comes to Bristol! He'll definitely be getting an email!)Charlie Higson is a an extremely talented polymath. He is a prolific Author, including 5 of the "Young Bond" series, having been commissioned by the Fleming Foundation to take up the mantle) He is also an Actor, Comedian & Podcaster. His Podcast "Willy Willy Harry Stee" is Charlie's History of the English Monarchy, inspired by the mnemonic verse which he rote learned and remembers from school. It's quite a "Fast Show" (see what I'm doing there?!) as there's quite a lot to talk about! This is what AI thinks we talked about!Have you ever wondered what stirs in the mind of a comedy genius? Picture this: Charlie Higson, a man of many creative masks, sits down with us and, with a wit as sharp as a scalpel, slices open the belly of the creative beast. He regales us with tales from the upcoming "Fast Show" tour, sharing how "Painting with Johnny" and other beloved characters are shortly to be resurrected night-after-night to the joy of sold-out crowds.Charlie doesn't just tickle our funny bones; he delves into his diverse trajectory - from punk rocker to actor to the man who breathes new life into the world of James Bond, both young and old. It's not all fun and games, though. Well, maybe it is – but with a hefty dash of nostalgia and reverence. Charlie pays homage to the comedic titans who paved his path, the likes of Monty Python, and admits that their imprint on his humor is as indelible as ink. He recounts the serendipity of meeting Paul Whitehouse, a kindred spirit in jest, at university and how it shaped their dynamic comedy duo. Even the bittersweet distraction of social media gets a nod, as Charlie admits to its allure, while also recognizing its role in today's narrative tapestry. You can also Watch/Listen to Charlie's wonderful episode here:https://vimeo.com/chrisgrimes/charliehigsonTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Born in the midst of the Cold War, James Bond was often considered the consummate Cold Warrior. But within the 14 original novels, 9 short stories, 40 continuation novels, 10 Young Bond novels and 25 movies to date, the fictional reflection of the struggles between the West and the Soviet Union was far more complex than reality. Martin Brown and Ron Granieri are guests in the studio to discuss their new book, The Bondian Cold War: The Transnational Legacy of a Cultural Icon. Martin and Ron, along with their fellow editor, Muriel Blaive, who wasn't able to attend this gathering, have written and gathered a volume of essays that examine the Bondiverse. They join host Gen Lester to discuss the impact 007 has had on the entertainment world, the culture war, and the very real worlds of espionage and diplomacy.

Charlie Higson, who has written "Young Bond" Novels and the On His Majesty's Secret Service novella, commented about the character of James Bond on social media.
Willy Willy Harry Stee is Charlie Higson's guide to the monarchy, all based on a rhyme he learned at school which, helpfully, gave an easy way to remember the names of every King & Queen of England. Unhelpfully it didn't teach you anything else about them, something this weekly podcast will help rectify. In this first episode, Charlie, who you may know as creator of and actor in The Fast Show and Down The Line, author of the Young Bond and Enemy series and recently the brand new James Bond novel 'On His Majesty's Secret Service' brings us part one of the backstory to the very first monarch, William The 1st or William The Conqueror as he's better known. To help make sense of this Charlie invited his friend Tom Holland who you may know from the top rated podcast The Rest Is History. So, settle down and enjoy 4000 years of history in one convenient podcast! Brilliant! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Delighted to welcome prolific Children's Author & Editor Steve Cole to The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing' for his story of Distinction & Genius. With over 150 titles and book series to his name including the hugely successful UK Children's Books Top 10 list "Astrosaurs" and also "Young Bond", as the natural successor to Charlie Higson as invited by the Ian Fleming Foundation to continue the series: "The name's Cole - Steve Cole" (see what I'm doing there?!) With lovely Oliver Postgate (Narrator of "Bagpuss" & "The Clangers") vocal tones to match. Despite having 150 titles to his name, hear how "prevarication is still his super power!" in hitting the housework hard as deadline's approach "like Doodlebugs humming overhead!" A very enjoyable conversation indeed!More about Steve Cole:Steve Cole is a fascinating, multifaceted, deadline-driven character: a slow worker but a fast talker! The author of literally dozens of different books, who claims that “procrastination is part of the process.”He is someone who turns to Salsa to unlock his Writer's Block and plays in a 30 years' old band called ‘Faces Fall' to express another aspect of his bubbling creativity. A self-confessed pedant who has been ‘riddled with hernias' most of his life and the occasional attack of repetitive strain injury. (Is there any psychosomatic connection there one has to wonder?)Steve Cole is someone with a lively mind and a truly encyclopaedic knowledge of Dr Who, who attributes his story-telling success to his English teacher, Mr Hall and a lot of his professional success to the Dr Who legend, Terence Dicks - who honoured him with a dedication! Also in Steve's inspirational trio is Charles M. Schultz, creator of one of the world's most popular and longest running cartoon strips - Peanuts. (Good grief, what a talent!) Marvel comics and the Incredible Hulk also come in for honourable mentions.“We are all stories in the end. Make it a good one” - these are Steve's choice of words to live by. Now he tells good stories for the Ian Fleming Foundation and entertains children in schools in interactive communication sessions. The Young Bond is now created by an old pro - if that doesn't sound too Ageist? One, two, three, one, two - over to you, maestro!Reg Starkey Editor, UK Health Triangle MagazineTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Charlie Higson is one of those annoying people who are good at everything. Not content with being an actor and comedian and formerly a singer, he is, of course, also an acclaimed author with a hugely impressive body of work. A star of The Fast Show, Broadchurch and Grantchester, his writing career is at least equally striking. The five novels in his Young Bond series and the seven in The Enemy series have thrilled and enchanted readers of all ages . His latest novel, Whatever Gets You Through the Night, is an out and out crime thriller, a gripping and brilliant page turner with a dark heart. Charlie Higson is interviewed by Steph McGovern.
Uncle Jesse stars opposite KISS rocker Gene F'kin Simmons in this “Young Bond” riff from 1986. Simmons chews (licks?) up every scene with his massive tongue turning what would be maybe a pretty okay enough teen action 80s piece of trash into something magical…excluding the weird intersexphobia. 4.3125/5 BAGS OF TRASH WATCH THE FILM: https://therokuchannel.roku.com/details/903c38d594ab5ec794cd92f0a07d9906/never-too-young-to-die #TRASHMOVIE TWITTER: https://twitter.com/trashmoviekings INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/trashmoviekings/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/groups/trashmoviekings https://www.trashmoviekings.com

WHATEVER GETS YOU THROUGH THE NIGHT: Most people travel to Corfu to escape the real world for a couple of weeks and embrace the fantasy of olive trees, sandy beaches, and little fishing boats bobbing on sparkling blue water under a warm sun.But not McIntyre. McIntyre's a fixer, specialising in getting people out of places they don't want to be with the minimum of fuss, publicity and violence. The job in Corfu should be easy - spring, Lauren, a 15-year-old schoolgirl, from the luxury compound of the tech billionaire, Julian Hepworth. First, Lauren's father turns up, threatening to give the game away, and soon, McIntyre's having to contend with Albanian gangsters, Greek drug dealers, psychotic bodyguards, flat earthers and spoilt, wealthy teenagers looking for dangerous kicks. To further complicate things, Lauren's planning her own 'jailbreak'. It looks like things are going to be a lot harder than McIntyre's used to. Luckily, he has his team around him, a motley and colourful bunch, each with their own speciality. The intertwined stories come together as the various characters all converge on a glamorous summer party at Hepworth's spectacular villa. Can McIntyre play the different factions off against each other and get Lauren to safety without things going horribly wrong?Whatever Gets You Through The Night is a crime novel with a thrillingly dark heart about the truths that lurk beneath the picture post card surface of a sunny Mediterranean idyll.CHARLIE HIGSON started writing when he was ten years old. How will the music choices – and late changes – affect No Time To Die? This week we recap all of the music news hurriedly released after the press got wind of both composer Hans Zimmer and title-song artist Billie Eilish at work on No Time To Die. We talk about the integration of the title song with the score, plus the lacklustre attempts to do so on SPECTRE and Skyfall; the young age of Shirley Bassey, Sam Smith, Adele, Sheena Easton, and Nancy Sinatra at the time of their Bond themes; the perspective a young title-artist will bring to the Bond sound; directors’ choices of composer and artistic impact of key personnel; why Dan Romer was dropped; who proposed a Young Bond prequel television series and why it got nixed; and the possible three-hour running time. Along the way we stumble on listening to Wings without earmuffs, when good artists experiment and fail, flogging DB5 replicas to keep Aston Martin afloat, the missing melodies, Michael Wilson's naps, cross-dressing Felix, recycled scripts and set-pieces, foreign tax breaks, and why David would never buy the 4-door Aston. The recording took place on January 17th in the USA and Spain. Charlie Higson, author of the best-selling Young Bond books, discusses the genesis of 007 – James Bond, Ian Fleming’s life in the secret service, and how the Bond books and films relate to real world events.
Hello dear listeners! Many 00 aficionados consider Ian Fleming's Casino Royale to be the holy grail of all things 007. It's the first ever published of the source material that has since branched off into so many different formats in which regale ourselves in Bond goodiness. But who was James Bond before Casino Royale? Ah, THAT is the question on…probably very few peoples' lips when it was announced Anthony Horowitz was returning to the world of Fleming for a prequel book. After all, more than one novel has tackled James' younger days in the aptly titled Young Bond series of books. Then came Dynamite Entertainment's James Bond Origin series, which recently completed its run. And speaking of holy grail's, let's not forget James Bond Jr! This week Mathieu and Edgar dive into the deep end for a conversation about Forever and a Day, the Casino Royale prequel that, while lauded by some, has been on surprisingly few lips since its release in 2018. Any opportunity to discuss literary Bond is a joyous occasion, a platform ripe for a multitude of sharp, astute commentary the boys are known for, such as: What makes a good Casino Royale prequel and a good 007 novel? Are they even necessarily the same? More classic ways of discerning if someone has homosexual tendencies, such as if they don't speak English and are monstrously obese. Why aren't there more nude chicks on the covers of Bond novels these days? Mocking someone for having a brain tumour and making it sound funny. Mocking someone for being fat and making it sound funny. The logistics of producing industrial quantities of heroine without anybody knowing about it. And so many more riveting topics! Sit back and join us in the south of France for a relaxing, invigorating, heroine filled episode.
‘What's your name, boy?' ‘Bond, James Bond.' ‘James Bond - sir.' ‘Yes. Sorry, sir.' In July 2018 Don had a chat with Charlie Higson, author of the first five Young Bond books. Their interview was originally conducted for the podcast of James Bond Netherlands, but is now shamelessly re-published for the 00 Files. Charlie's first Young Bond adventure is SilverFin, published in 2005. The story is set in 1933 and we meet thirteen-year-old James Bond, who is sent to Eton. James gets involved with a diabolical plot, in which a larger-than-life villain threatens to change the nature of modern warfare... In 2014 Steve Cole published his first Young Bond book titled Shoot To Kill. Following in the footsteps of both Ian Fleming and Charlie Higson is no easy task, but Steve managed to stay true to the world created by his predecessors and make it his own. I (Don) was lucky enough to interview Steve on his tenure and was surprised by his openness. We obviously discuss the books in general, keeping the conversation as spoiler-free as possible, but I also got to ask some questions that were personally nagging me. For instance: why doesn't Bond understand any Spanish? And why wouldn't his aunt Charmian believe his story? Steve, luckily, was very patient with me and took all my Dutch bluntness in his stride. At the end of the interview there's an exclusive new Bond song! The full credits/roles are as follows: 'Shoot to Kill' – Steve Cole and Jason Loborik feat Karen Casey Music written by Jason Loborik/Steve Cole Piano: Jason Loborik Main vocal: Karen Casey Lyrics, backing vocals, bass guitar, additional synths: Steve Cole Additional backing vocals: Laura Taylor Strings: Joni Fuller Electric guitar: Paul Grice Produced and engineered by Steve Cole If you enjoy our podcast, please share it with your family and friends.
