Introduction This is the Northern 90 Podcast with Pat Sweet, Episode 14. Welcome to the Northern 90 Canadian Premier League Podcast, covering the beautiful game in the great white north. For more Canadian Premier League content, head over to Northern90.ca. That’s Northern Nine Zero dot ca. Welcome Hello, Canada, and welcome to the Northern 90 Canadian Premier League Podcast! I'm your host, Pat Sweet. This week, I convene the first annual Northern 90 Predictions Panel, featuring The Young Gaffers, Curtis Marshall from A.F.C. Curtis, and Ryan Brandtfrom TSN 1290 in Winnipeg and a contributor to CanPL.ca. Also very exciting is the fact that the panel discussion will be cross posted on the Young Gaffers podcast, so that's very cool. And extra thanks to all the guys who took part. News In this week's headlines: First and foremost - the league launches this weekend! Saturday at 1PM Eastern it's York 9 at Forge FC, which will be broadcast live on CBC TV and through their streaming services. On Sunday the Wanderers travel to Pacific FC for a game at 7PM Eastern On Wednesday, May 1st, Pacific FC plays a second home game again Valour FC. All games should be available for free through onesoccer.ca, though the details have not yet emerged on that. Best to sign up for their mailing list. Cavalry FC sign 17-year old Victor Loturi. He's from Calgary, and will be one of the youngest players in the leauge. Tommy Wheeldon Jr. is very high on Loturi saying "He’s doing things with a ball that I haven’t seen in a long time.” Some mascots have been introduced, including Stewie the Starfish for Pacific FC, Sparks the dragon for Forge FC, and Rover the giant duck tolling retriever here in Halifax, who my Paw Patrol-obsessed four-year old is super pumped about. I'd love to hear what you think about the mascots - write me in the show notes. CPL Predictions for 2019 For the main content today, I invited some of the best and brightest CPL content creators to join me to have a chat about the league and what we can expect for 2019 - who will win the golden boot, who will win each of the half seasons and the overall championship, and much, much more. You'll hear the voices of Adam Kostanuick and Jason Paul of the Young Gaffers podcast, Curtis Marshal from the A.F.C. Curtis YouTube channel, and Ryan Brandt who's a contributor to CanPL.ca and works for TSN 1290 in Winnipeg a well. For ease of reference (and to keep us honest), I'm posting a table to summarize everyone's predicitons to the show notes. That'll make it easy to see how we fared by the end of the season. [caption id="attachment_387" align="aligncenter" width="858"]CPL Predictions for 2019[/caption] Without further adieu, here's my discussion with the CPL Predicitons Panel. I hope you enjoyed that conversation. Be sure to let me know what you think by leaving a comment in the show notes - what did you agree with, not agree with, and what categories should we discuss for next year. Next up, the mailbag. Mailbag Some great messages and ideas this week to share with you. Those of you who hear the show last week will remember Sam from the UK who was looking to adopt a club as his own. Well Fabien reached out on Facebook to make his case for York 9. He made the point that Jimmy Brennan played in England, so there's a connection there, and that, compared to their neighbours Toronto FC, they look a lot like an underdog, which was one of the things Sam was looking for. Thank you, Fabien! Joe wrote to suggest that I start a CPL pool or fantasy league, which I am definitely working towards, so stay tuned for that. And finally, Robin Glover wrote to offer to help with sound clips and insight into L1O, which is very cool because of the matchups that will be coming for the Canadian Championship, so I'll definitely take you up on that, Robin. What do you think? If you've listened to the show, you know I love to hear from you guys I'd love to know what you think. Introduction This is the Northern 90 Podcast with Pat Sweet, Episode 10. In today’s episode, I sit with the excellent Curtis Marshall of the A.F.C. Curtis YouTubechannel to discuss the league's top "under-the-radar" signings. As is usually the case, a minority of players get the majority of airtime, so we each chose a couple players from around the league who we thought fans should get excited about. But before we get to the interview of course, we have this week's CPL headlines. News In this week's headlines: In some very sad news, Marcel de Jong, widely regarded as one of the league's top signings has sustained a season-ending injury. He suffered a ruptured achilles and underwent surgery to repair it. My thoughts go out to you, Mr. de Jong, and to Pacific FC supporters everywhere. On a more academic note, this is the kind of thing that, in a morbid kind of way, will be interesting to observe over the course of the season. Obviously, I take no joy in ever seeing a player go down to injury, but it remains a factor in all sports, and it will be interesting to see how teams cope with this kind of thing, especially when key players are sidelined. In more uplifting news, Canadian International Michael Petrasso has signed with Valour FCwho was previously with the Montreal Impact. As I had predicted in one of my earlier episodes, coach Rob Gale is doing a great job of drawing on his experience as a former Canadian Youth National Team coach. Gale knows exactly what he's getting with Petrasso, so this looks like it's going to be a good fit for the club. Finally, York9 FC announced that it will be playing its entire season out of the York Lions Stadium. Originally, the team was supposed to start games at Alumni Field and eventually move to York Lions Stadium, so this is good news in terms of continuity and the fan experience. The stadium will be one of the smaller ones in the league, but is modern, beautiful, and has a natural grass which is excellent. Members get a free weekly newsletter to help keep them up to date on all things CPL, on top of a number of other freebees. Also, it's free. Check it out at northern90.ca/join. Next up, I speak with Curtis Marshall all about the league's top under-the-radar signings to date. The League's Most Under-the-radar Signings I recently caught up with Curtis Marshall of the excellent CPL YouTube channel called A.F.C. Curtis to discuss the players in the league that no one is talking about that we think everyone should be talking about. Curtis' knowledge of the league and its players is second-to-none, and I think you'll hear that come out during our conversation. Without further adieu, here's my conversation with Curtis Marshall. What do you think? If you've listened to the show, you know I love to hear from you guys. I'd love to know what you think of this deal. You can: Leave a comment at northern90.ca/episode10 Write to me at pat at northern90.ca Fire me a note on Twitter @northernninety Next up, the mailbag. Mailbag Some great messages and ideas this week to share with you. The venerable Jason Paul who co-hosts the Young Gaffers podcast wrote to share that he liked the last episode and to hear about the history behiond the Wanderers Grounds - thank you very much Mr. Paul. There was some great feedback on the interviews with the fellas from Privateers 1882. Reddit users Ukie1978, t_bison, and feb914 all had feedback and suggestions. One common thread was to go a bit longer on the interviews, rather than the short clips, which I thought was a great idea, so thank you! And one fan wrote to say that the show makes me sound like a regular Jeff Douglas, which is the highest praise I could possibly recieve. CBC listeners will understand the gravity of that compliment, so thanks so much for that! Outroduction That's all we've got for the show today. Thanks again to Curtis for joining me for the show! Introduction This is the Northern 90 Podcast with Pat Sweet, Episode 7. And actually, before I move on, I should say hello to the rest of the world, too. In the three weeks since I launched the podcast, I've had visitors from: Canada United States United Kingdom Netherlands European Union Ireland Serbia Panama Honduras Belgium So, I should be saying "Hello, world!" and welcome to our great land. It's great to have you. In today’s episode, I'm going to do a deep dive into the recently-announced media rights partnership that was announced between Canadian Soccer Business and Mediapro - what's good, what's bad, and what questions remain unanswered. But first, let's tackle this week's CPL headlines. News In this week's headlines: Portuguese-Canadian footballer Stephen Eustaquio commits to the Canadian Men's National Team. This is huge for Canadian soccer. You look at the roster, and guys like Cyle Larin, Ballou Tabla, Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, and now Eustaquio, are all solid and have enormous upsides. By the time Canada co-hosts World Cup in 2026, the men's squad is going to be very, very good. The Young Gaffers had a great show this week, with a really cool interview with Pacific FC's Marcel de Jong. Go check that out. They made the argument that de Jong's signing could really open doors for MLS players considering joining CPL, which I think is a good call on their part. There's finally a CPL schedule! Check it out here. If you want even more CPL content, including the most important headlines delivered straight to your inbox, then sign up for the Northern 90 Supporters' group. When you join, you get a weekly newsletter with the top headlines, podcast notifications, access to private supporter's group Facebook group, and much much more. Also, it's free. Check it out at northern90.ca/join. Next up, a deep dive into the CSB's media partnership with Mediapro. Deep Dive into the CSB's Media Rights Deal with Mediapro In last week's episode, I explained that the creatively named Canadian Soccer Business had announced a deal that would see it's media rights for the next decade be sold to Mediapro for an undisclosed fee. If you didn't catch the episode, you can check it out at northern90.ca/episode6,but to recap: The Deal in a Nutshell Mediapro is a global media company based in Spain, known for the "commercialization of competitions" like La Liga and UEFA Champions League, among others. In this 10-year deal, Mediapro becomes the “Official Media Partner" to the CSB They are acquiring the global and domestic rights to: Canadian men's and women's national team home matches Voyageur's Cup CPL games League 1 Ontario games Mediapro will be in charge of the production of all matches Plans include an OTT soccer streaming channel that will be available through desktop, mobile, and smart TV platforms. Content includes unique soccer shoulder programming including magazine shows, documentaries, and other Canadian soccer programming. Quotes from Oscar Lopez, the CEO of Mediapro Canada: "For us, the match is only half the story we want to tell. The other half is the story of the players, the cities, the training and processes, everything around the match and about the teams. That’s how we built La Liga, which is on seven days per week." “We know clearly that the agencies that only deal with buying and selling rights are coming to an end. We need to add more value to these rights.” Mediapro will continue to work with CSB to contemplate all distribution opportunities, partnerships, and platforms that ensure the future success of CSB’s media assets. What I think of CSB Deal with Mediapro On the importance of cash Think of the league as a start-up. Cash is the most important thing in the world right now. This deal gives us that, and cash into the future to plan on. There have been no official reports on the cash value of the deal, but the guys over at the Young Gaffers podcast had heard it was a $20M/ year deal. If that's true, then there will a lot of people at the league's front office sleeping well for the first time in months. On the long-term deal A 10-year deal is interesting. On one hand, it represents a risk for CSB that they've left money on the table. It's possible they could have gone with a shorter deal and gone back to the market in a couple of years in the hopes of getting more money once the league has matured a bit. On the other hand, having a longer-term deal puts Mediapro in a spot where they're all in. If they hope to reap the benefits of their investment in these rights, they have to produce excellent content to sell to consumers directly, to other distribution channels, or to sell the rights to someone else. The ten-year deal means everyone's in this together - it creates a win-win situation. When the league produces great soccer, Mediapro wins. When Mediapro produces great content, the league wins. In both cases, the fans win. I suspect there's also an eye being put toward world cup in 2026 as well - there will be a natural groundswell of soccer support in this country at that time. Canadian players will be on the world stage, at home, and the CanPL will get a ton of organic marketing through that. Following the tournament, Mediapro will find that there's much more demand for their content, both direct to customers and through the major networks. On Mediapro The other encouraging thing about the deal is that that's a major vote of confidence from Mediapro - an organization with significant experience in and exposure to leagues all over the world. This deal allows the league and CSB to focus on football. They're not a media company. Mediapro is. This will lead to better overall product quality on the pitch and on your screen. Mediapro will end up hiring Canadians and staffing offices here. That's good. On the products being promised I'm excited that the content will be delivered over the top. Thrilled about the scope of what will be delivered - having national team games and Canadian Championship games included is awesome. Coverage of League 1 Ontario intrigues me. It makes me wonder what the CPL's plans are for that league. I can only imagine that there's work being done already to sort out how to integrate it formally into the larger Canadian Soccer Pyramid and with the CPL. There has been consternation online about not having the league shared directly with casual fans on major networks. I think it's important to remember we're early adopters. The league isn't looking for mass adoption right away. OTT is just fine. Even better, it'll give Mediapro better feedback through which to improve the programming quickly. Once the product is refined on and off the pitch, it can go to a wider audience. Overall score My gut reaction is that this gets an A. The long-term nature of the deal is a win. The cash is a win. The partner is a win. Not worried about the lack of big cable deal. Distribution has to satisfy the early adopters first, then move on once that market has been served, and the needs are very different. What do you think? If you've listened to the show, you know I love to hear from you guys. I'd love to know what you think of this deal. You can: Leave a comment at northern90.ca/episode7 Write to me at pat at northern90.ca Fire me a note on Twitter @northernninety Next up, the mailbag. Mailbag Some great messages and ideas this week to share with you. Barry from Scotland wrote to tell me he liked the show and to provide some good feedback, so I really appreciate that Barry. Paul wrote to ask for some clarification on the 3 U-21 players and the 1000 minutes minimum rule. Reddit user TheUrbanEast made some great suggestions about what I could do in future episodes by doing interviews and having guest hosts on the show. I love the idea, and I'm already working on that. I've got some irons in the fire that include other soccer content creators, analysts and league office folks, so stay tuned for that. As I've mentioned before, I love getting your mail. Keep it coming! The best thing about doing this podcast is meeting other fans and talking about the game, so thank you for that. Outroduction That's all we've got for the show today. Wherein Our Heroes heap sweet praise on the Canadian Premier League's recently-unveiled logo and manifesto. Toronto FC come within centimetres of winning the CONCACAF Champions League, but now will have to grip their toques tightly to secure an MLS playoff spot. The recent Al Classico first leg in Edmonton proves that the Battle of Alberta is alive and healthy and bodes well for future derby matches. We (again) lament VAR use in MLS and (once more) make it known. Also, the wildest soccer fan in Brazil gets the craziest soccer tattoo imaginable – no more "shirts versus skins” for this guy! Olympiakos players receive fines and a “holiday” for the rest of the season for their poor performances. The latest attempt at a Ronaldo bust swings the pendulum too far to the Adonis side of things. The provincial government in British Columbia declares it will not open the purse strings for the World Cup 2026 bid, pulling the plug on Vancouver as a potential host city. The CONCACAF Champions League grows evermore intriguing as MLS clubs evolve to compete with their Liga MX counterparts. Also, Montréal's tactics allow them to see off Toronto in the 401 Derby. Wherein Our Heroes channel their deepest foresight to deliver their picks for the MLS Eastern and Western Conference champions. Toronto and Vancouver appear to be on the right track, with Montreal lacking depth after having been bitten hard by pre-season injuries. Atlanta and the Cascadia clubs look to impress once again. The Bachelor finale proves to actually be the most dramatic ever. Also, is Canadian soccer fandom too insular a community? Should fans of the sport get all evangelical up in here? Also, Héctor Bellerín calls out ArsenalFanTV and its creators for not being true “fans”. Tune in to see whether or not we are having it! Wigan monumentally slay the giant that is Manchester City in fifth round FA Cup play and one costly mistake robs Chelsea of victory against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League. Wherein Our Heroes are joined by guests Joe and Greg to wax philosophical on the Premier League season to be. Together, we engage in the most profound punditry in the Northern Hemisphere, including but not limited to, our top 7/8 picks in the table, Pep Guardiola's first season in England, where Leicester might finish, whether or not Paul Pogba is worth his transfer fee, and Big Sam's propensity for steering England to glory. The Young Gaffers | An irreverent look at The Beautiful Game
Wherein Our Heroes and Brendan once again convene to complete their Euro 2016 preview for all of Gafferdom. Groups D and E are rife with intrigue while Group F seems to be the dud of the bunch. Will Spain sizzle like chorizo in a hot pan or will their form cool like a fresh gazpacho? We waffle on whether Belgium can secure top spot in Group E, or if the Italians can defy their role as non-favourites. Will Iceland live up to expectations as the darlings of the tournament? Also, Marouane Fellaini adopts a Valderrama look, and we dig. Wherein Our Heroes are joined by Brendan, Wielder of The Whistle of Never-Ending Substitutions, to discuss prognostications and predictions for Groups A, B, and C. We think France could be magnifique in front of their home supporters, wonder if Wayne Rooney will spell doom for England's attacking three, and feel Thomas Müller is a candidate for das Golden Boot. The new tournament format is titillating, Wales may surprise, and the Swiss likely won't miss. Also, Mario Gómez and his slick locks may just prove decisive for Germany. The Young Gaffers | An irreverent look at The Beautiful Game
Wherein Our Heroes roll up their sleeves, pull on their raw Japanese selvedge denim, straighten their bow ties, and debate the efficacy of the Trequartista. Zlatan drops knowledge bombs, Adidas gets all snarky about Manchester United's style, and we name the definitive “Hipster Starting XI”. Also, Benitez gets sacked, Vardy puts his name in lights, and poor Seamus drinks his own urine – we hear it tastes just like PBR. Oh, and we review some organic, fair-trade, artisanal matches. The Young Gaffers | An irreverent look at The Beautiful Game
The clock hath struck midnight on the MLS regular season and only 12 clubs have survived the bloodbath. Our Heroes provide their ghoulish predictions on who will come out alive and who will be dragged to the fiery depths of hell. Will Sporting Kansas City transform when the moon is full? Will Mauro Biello's unnatural creation come to life at Saputo? Will Carl Robinson's children of the night feast on the souls of the living? The Young Gaffers answer all of these questions and more on this most devilish 13th episode. Also, we answer fan mail from Amy. Music by Iron Maiden, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Bobby “Boris” Pickett
