This week we are updating and adding photos to a great flashback show with Ed Light and the late Marty King. This was an excellent show on the assessment of smoke Damage which is once again a hot topic again. With all the wildfires, train wrecks and recycling fires this show from 3-23-12 is as relevant today as it was then. Let's learn from those that have been there and done that Marty King and Ed Light. Martin King was the Restoration Industries Association Technical Adviser for 30 years, where he developed a broad range of restoration procedures and published over 300 articles in trade journals. He also served as CEO of Martin Churchill Associates, Inc. Damage Investigators and Appraisers and has investigated and prepared formal reports on over 2000 property damage cases. Recently Light N King have been working together to improve the knowledge and science behind fire damage restoration and repair. Unfortunately, fire damage and restoration issues often times take a back seat to more “sexy” mold. It seems that mold gets all the attention even though fire damage is an extremely important issue. Ed Light holds degrees in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts (B.S.) and Marshall University (M.S.), is a Senior Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, has authored over 40 scientific publications on assessment and control of the indoor environment and has chaired several national scientific committees. In the 1980's, Ed established the West Virginia Department of Health IAQ Program, pioneering efforts to resolve exposure issues related to formaldehyde, asbestos, and termiticides. In the 1990's, he developed widely used protocols for addressing IEQ complaints (published by EPA, NIOSH and ISIAQ) and managing air quality in occupied buildings under construction (for SMACNA, promulgated by ANSI). As a consultant, Ed has directed more than 1000 multi-disciplinary IEQ investigations, ranging from the White House to the South Pole Station. He has been admitted as an expert witness in numerous litigations. LEARN MORE at IAQRadio+.

Back in the studio, solo dolo. In episode 31, I'm taking a deep dive into what is meant behind the phrase: The Beloved Community. The goal of Season 1 of That Social Work Lady has been to introduce myself and share with my listeners how community is built, supported, maintained, and structured. In community, we all have a role to play and something to share. No matter who you are and no matter what you believe you have to offer everyone can contribute to community. The late great Congressman John Lewis was a champion of building The Beloved Community and he often spoke on the importance of getting into 'good trouble' in the name of establishing it. Mr. Lewis learned the concept from his mentor and leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.In his own words, Dr. King once said, "Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives."As a social worker for nearly 3 decades I have made it my mission to work toward building community using the tenets mapped out by Dr. King's philosophy of nonviolence. It has not been an easy road. Especially when so much of my time has been spent advocating and arguing against policies that create more barriers for people than they alleviate. Let's talk about how we do the work of building the beloved community together.Read more about The Triple Evils as defined by Kingian Philosophy: https://thekingcenter.org/about-tkc/the-king-philosophy/To purchase "Where Do We Go From Here: From Chaos to Community" by Dr. Martin L. Tu puoi fare la differenza, sempre, in ogni ambito. James Cone: Father of Black Liberation Theology[col. writ. 4/29/18] © ’18 Mumia Abu-Jamal James Cone was a small man, as in short of stature; but he was great in mind as a theologian and scholar. And after the emergence of the Black Freedom Movement of the ‘60s, he shocked the world with his seminal work Black Theology, where he wrote; “God is Black.” Professor Cone wasn’t the first to say that, for, decades before he did so, scholar Arthur Huff Fauset wrote Black Gods of the Metropolis, published originally in 1944, detailing Black religious movements in US Northern ghettoes. Professor Cone’s work, enlightened by the Black Freedom movement, led him to write: God is black…There is no place in black theology for a colorless God in a society where human beings suffer precisely because of their color. The blackness of God means that God has made the oppressed condition God’s own condition. James Hal Cone, author: A Black Theology of Liberation, 2nd ed. (1986) Cone’s ideas came to fruition in Black Christian nationalist communities across America, who saw the Divine at work in the Black Freedom Movement. Cone’s boldness was matched by his brilliance, and his writing was both liberating and revelatory. In 1991, Cone published Malcolm and Martin in America, which examined the ideas of Martin L. King, Jr., and Malcolm X, and their impacts on America. In writing of these two spiritual leaders and their respective ways of leadership, Cone wrote: Anger and humor are like the left and right arm. They complement each other. Anger empowers the poor to declare their uncompromising opposition to oppression, and humor prevents them from being consumed by their fury. James Cone, author: Malcolm and Martin in America.James Cone, born in Fordyce, Arkansas, 1939, returns to his ancestors after a shimmering career as a Black scholar. -© ‘18maj

In this podcast, author and organizer Devin Walker shows the similarities between Prophet Jeremiah in the Bible, the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., Paul Robeson and W.E.B. Dubois, and how each of them sacrificed and suffered politically or socially for speaking out against the church and the state. Reading from the conclusion of his 2002 book entitled, “An Appeal to the African Church in America: Beware of False Profit$,” Devin appeals to the African church and all oppressed people to not be afraid to speak truth to power and to stand up against the status quo, no matter the consequences. To here all episodes of this podcast, click Here!
This is the first episode of Devin Walker's Podcast entitled, "Evolved Beyond Christianity." In this Podcast, Devin explains its purpose and describes his own evolution from Christianity back to Pan-Africanism. He discusses the history and origin of Easter and Christmas as examples, and quotes a divinity school paper written by the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., entitled, "The Impact of the Mystery Systems on Christianity," as an example of how and why Christianity is not an end, but a means to an end that is not necessary for everyone. This Podcast is for the many people who have beliefs that are vastly different from the church or religious institution they currently or formerly attended, but are afraid to speak out for fear of isolation from their Church, family or friends. This discussion will provide you with historical information about the origins of religion that will help you understand that there are many paths to truth and enlightenment beyond religion and that it is perfectly fine to choose your own path toward this quest. www.devinlwalkerbooks.com
This week on IAQradio we welcome an All Star cast for a frank discussion on the future of the restoration industry. Our guests were all speakers at last week's 71st International Restoration Convention and Industry Expo in Palm Springs, CA. They all gave important presentations or Keynotes at the Restoration Industry Association's (RIA) annual event. The Town Hall theme for this year's event was "The Future of the Water Damage Restoration Industry" and was facilitated by none other than IAQradio's Restoration Global Watchdog Pete Consigli! The Town Hall was the culmination of one of RIA's convention story line's that included a breakout session moderated by Ken Larsen on the Do's and Don'ts of Rebates, Referral Fees, Comps and Gratuities with Peter Crosa and well known IAQ attorney Michael Bowdoin. Ed Cross was the convention's Day 2 keynote speaker and addressed the RIA members on "The 6 New Legal Points Restorers must Understand to Survive in 2017". Crosa who is the sitting President for the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjusters (NAIIA) presented the Independent Adjusters viewpoint on the Town Hall Panel. Well known industry advocate Ed Cross aka "The Restoration Lawyer" made his case for industry unification through one voice and closed out his Town Hall panel presentation with a message to band together, "Band or Burn" was the reoccurring message! The RTPE program (Registered Third Party Evaluator) recently explained to RIA members at their annual convention in Palm Springs during their Town Hall meeting by Ken Larsen, CR, WLS, CMP may be a solution for contractors who are constantly challenged by TPA's on their scope of work and invoices. Longtime industry activist and RIA supporter Ken Larsen presented his vision for the RTPE program on the RIA Town Hall panel along with Peter Crosa, AIC, RPA and Ed Cross, Esq. Larsen has a 5 part series on the TPE concept that was previewed in the 2017 February issue of Cleaning and Restoration (C&R) magazine. A high point of the RIA annual banquet and awards ceremony was the presentation of C&R's Golden Quill award won this year by IAQradio's own, Cliff "The Z-man" Zlotnik for his article on "Concerns over the Water Restoration Industry". The 32nd annual recipient of the Marty King award was Ken Larsen for his years of service and activism to RIA and the industry! Way to go Ken!!
The culmination of the ceremony was the awarding of the association's most prestigious honor, the presentation of the Martin L. King award. The 32nd annual recipient of the Marty King award was Ken Larsen for his years of service and activism to RIA and the industry! Way to go Ken!!

This week Pete Consigli was in Pittsburgh and sat down with the Z-man and Radio Joe in Studio C for a retrospective conversation about the almost 4 decade relationship between these two restoration industry icons. This show could be characterized as ¢??Restoration Confidential¢??, it was personal, insightful, controversial at times but most of all came from the heart with a spirit of setting the record straight on many of the industry¢??s misnomers and folklore! Listen in as two of the industry¢??s most well known and colorful personalities sit down to reflect on their professional life together as they come to the realization that in their twilight years there is still much to be done and their ¢??work¢?? is still in progress! This was a tremendous show that gave us a peak into Consigli and Zlotnik¢??s Restoration Journey with a destination yet to be realized. We will finish the story with another special show following Summer Camp on August 7th at noon eastern. IAQ Radio listeners know Pete as a friend of the show and the Global Watchdog who helps recruit guests and support their interviews that address issues facing the restoration industry. The recent passing of industry icon Marty King who founded the original restoration industry trade group in 1971 leaves Pete and Cliff as the only remaining honorary members of RIA. Next year Pete and Cliff will celebrate 2 milestones with RIA¢??s 70th Anniversary Convention in March and the 20th anniversary of Summer Camp in August. As IAQ Radio listeners may know, this past March in Dallas IAQA inducted Pete into its Hall of Fame for his work with Joe Lsiburek¢??s legendary Building Science Symposium known as Summer Camp. What most listeners don¢??t know is that Cliff was there with Pete for the first Summer Camp in 1996 as the 2 invited representatives from the restoration industry! Pete and Cliff talk about the milestone events that helped shape the industry that you know today and give IAQ Radio listeners an insiders view on how, why and when things happened! During Parts 1 & 2 Pete, Cliff and Radio Joe sat down at the ¢??kitchen table¢?? and had a retrospective conversation providing the background on the most pressing issues the industry faces today. During Part 3 August 7th Radio Joe will press Pete and Cliff to finish the story and share their vision for the future of the industry with IAQ Radio listeners. LEARN MORE and listen to this show then join us live August 7th when we finish the most unique IAQ Radio interview ever! The first was to Marty King, CR, ASA, a member of the industry¢??s founding generation and longtime mentor to Pete.
