In this episode, Adam Biles is joined by writer Dan Richards to talk about his new book Overnight, a deep dive into the world of the night and the people who live and work while the rest of us sleep. From ferry captains and bakers to ICU nurses, researchers, and racing drivers, Richards explores the unseen rhythms and quiet heroism of nocturnal life. The conversation touches on the origins of the book—an unexpected night stranded on a mountain with his father—and how a life-threatening experience during the pandemic reshaped his understanding of vulnerability, care, and community. With warmth, wit, and poetic insight, Richards discusses circadian myths, the industrialisation of sleep, bats, and the benevolence of those who keep the world turning in the dark. Overnight is a tribute to those who inhabit the night, and this conversation shines a light on their often-unseen contributions.Buy Overnight: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/overnight*Dan Richards is the co-author of Holloway (with Robert Macfarlane and Stanley Donwood), and the author of The Beechwood Airship Interviews, Climbing Days, Outpost and Overnight. We also discuss at length Jarak Qaribak, Jonny Greenwood's fantastic collab with Dudu Tassa. As always the newspile is ever-growing as we cover the Smile's impending NA tour, when the next album might drop, Stanley Donwood's silly fake band names, Creep being used (yet again) in different media, and Kristina's sleuthing around an unreleased the Smile song that curiously resembles a song from the 70s. As the end of the 20th century approached, Radiohead took to the recording studio to capture the sound of a society that felt like it was fraying at the edges. Those two albums, Kid A and Amnesiac, released in 2000 and 2001, were entrancing and eerie — they documented the struggle to redefine humanity, recalibrate, and get a grip on an uncertain world. Make sure to have your rat poison and morphine ready, because we're diving into the psychedelic nightmarish wasteland that is 2003's Deloused in the Comatorium by progressive-rock band The Mars Volta - AKA the rise and fall of Cerpin Taxt. While Alex has been somewhat of a fan of them for over a decade, this is Austin's first foray into the bands music. We talk about the bands prior history as At the Drive-In, the songwriting duo of Cedric Zavala-Bixler and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the revolving door of musicians (including RHCP's Flea and John Frusciante), the incredible drumming by Jon Theodore, Rick Rubin and the importance of a good producer (where Alex accidentally credits Stanley Donwood instead of Nigel Godrich for Radiohead), and the albums unique mix of prog-rock, post-hardcore, psychedelic, and droning ambience. Outside of the topical discussion, we get into how busy Austin's life is getting with an upcoming wedding, house-hunting, and infatuation with emulating old SNES and gameboy games, plus the overall nothing-happening going ons of Alex's life at the moment (RIP). Yes, this is how kick off a new season of the Radio Juxtapoz podcast, and boy, do we have a banger. When you think of Radiohead, you automatically think of the story of one of the most critically acclaimed and popular bands in the world reimagining themselves at the turn of the century and becoming... well, bigger and more popular and more critically acclaimed. These weren't easy years for the band, and shedding their sound to become the rich, textured and nuanced electronics meets traditional instruments became their calling. And it started with Kid A and Amnesiac. For frontman Thom Yorke and his artistic collaborator Stanley Donwood, this was a time of experimentation as well. With a studio focus, they created a massive body of work that stretches over the course of two albums, and with the 21st anniversary reissue, the made Kid A Mnesia focus on the artwork as well. And that is where Radio Juxtapoz caught the two, talking about art school, creating in the studio, experimenting, having fun, being manic, how they decided to package the two decades old artwork, how Hockney influenced them and what painting means to them and Radiohead as a whole. This is a special one you don't want to miss. The Radio Juxtapoz podcast is hosted by FIFTH WALL TV's Doug Gillen and Juxtapoz editor, Evan Pricco. It's rare for a band's tour documentary to appeal beyond its fanbase. But with Grant Gee's documentary Meeting People is Easy, it's even more of a miracle to come near the artistic breadth of Radiohead's OK Computer, an album which has been periodically voted the greatest of all time since its release in 1997. On today's episode we talk how Gee managed to sustain the heightened style of a music video through the feature's length, using overlapping images, an emphasis on lyricism, non-sync sound, all trying to mimic not just the band's sound, but also the visual style of Thom Yorke and designer Stanley Donwood. Also: how Gee originally was called in for the original idea to make a video for each of OK Computer's songs, the thought process of putting then-unreleased songs snippets into the cut, the “amazing” unused Kid A footage he shot that was just “wrong,” writer Patricia Lockwood's thoughtful description a moment in the film, and matching the album's particular innovation of mixing digital and analogue with his own multiple visual formats like Super 8mm, 16mm Bolex, and B&W digital video.Along with Meeting People is Easy, Gee has also directed the documentary Joy Division, music videos for Radiohead, Blur, Spooky, and worked with acts ranging from Coldplay, Nick Cave, and Scott Walker. He's currently at work on the documentary The Gold Machine about Welsh writer Iain Sinclair, the third in his trilogy of feature cityscapes about writers.Meeting People is Easy is streaming for free online at Radiohead's Public Library and is also available on PAL VHS from the W.A.S.T.E.

For nearly 30 years, Radiohead's visual identity has been established from the mind and evolving style of artist, Stanley Donwood. Like a 6th member of the band, his experiments in his own creative process have gone hand-in-hand with the band's constant reimagining of their own sound. Often embedded in the studio while album's are being made, Donwood listens, expands, visualizes and tells his own creative story while one of the biggest bands in the world tells their own. The bond has made for a consistent and special conversation between artist and musicians, one that rarely gets to grow together as music packaging has become more of a luxury. On the eve of the release of his first monograph, There Will Be No Quiet, Radio Juxtapoz sat down with the British artist in Shoreditch before a few appearances he was making around London to coincide with the book. We talked about Donwood's unique partnership with Radiohead, his relationship to the early days of London street art and Lazarides Gallery and some of the newest collaborative work and public art projects that coincided with Thom Yorke's ANIMA record. Donwood's history is an incredible journey through music, literature and underground art, and in a candid interview, we get his story. Subscribe to the Radio Juxtapoz podcast HERE.
