We covered the big commercial hit album "Brothers In Arms" back in episode 154, but many afficianados of Dire Straits consider their finest work to be the album that preceeded this one. Love Over Gold is their fourth studio album, released in late September 1982 and on the charts in June 1983. For this album, prime mover and lead vocalist Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, and percussionist Pick Withers are joined by new members Hal Lindes on guitars and Alan Clark on keyboards. The songs on this album are longer than your standard single, particularly the majestic 14-minute "Telegraph Road." Despite their length, "Private Investigations" was released as a single in the UK and reached number 2on the charts. The shortest song, "Industrial Disease" (still clocking in at 5:50) was released as a single in the US. It would reach number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, but would be a staple of rock radio stations at the time.A number of songs were written and recorded during the "Love Over Gold" sessions, but subsequently discarded from album release. Amongst these was the song "Private Dancer," which was instead provided to Tina Turner for her comeback album of the same name. Turner would take this song to number 7 on the US charts, and see her career reinvigorated by the success of her "Private Dancer" album."Love Over Gold" was a number 1 album on a number of charts, including Australia, Austria, and the UK, and reached number 19 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.Rob brings us this outstanding, deep, and thought-provoking album for this week's podcast.Telegraph RoadThis lengthy masterpiece was inspired while Knopfler was riding in his tour bus down the 70-mile road of the same name. The song narrarates the development and history along the road as the decades roll past. It is easy to describe this song as prog rock, but it also contains one of the best guitar solo riffs you will hear. Industrial DiseaseGoodness me, goodness me! We have to highlight the US single from the album. The title comes from a term for work-related illness, and the term in this song references both individual work illness and the decline of British industry in general. The reference to Dr. Parkinson is a British professor and satirist who is famous for the phrase "work expands to fill the time available for its completion." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Overture to the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart (from the motion picture “Trading Places”)Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd star in this comedy about a yuppie and a homeless man who are forced to trade places as the result of a bet by two rich stock brokers. STAFF PICKS:Murder By Numbers by The PoliceBruce initiates the staff picks with a dark song about becoming a serial killer. This Police song appears on the cassette and CD version of the album "Synchronicity," but was left off the vinyl due to lack of space. It was written by Sting and Andy Summers, the only collaborative song on the album, and was recorded in a single take. Rock of Ages by Def LeppardLynch brings us a huge song from Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album. Producer Mutt Lange counts off the nonsensical "Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen," to open the song, and the lyrics form an anthem suitable for arena show openers. Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was an inspiration to the creation of this anthem.Don't Pay the Ferryman by Chris deBurghWayne's staff pick takes a fantasy approach to the story of Charon and the crossing of the river Styx, advising not to pay until the trip is done. Irish artist Chris deBurgh broke into the US top 40 with this song, peaking at number 34. Lines from Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" can be heard in the bridge to the song. The Walls came Down by The Call Rob finishes the staff picks with a song that is inspired by the Biblical tale of the fall of Jericho. Lead singer Michael Been would pull biblical references into his lyrics, including this song. The Call formed in 1980 in California, and blended rock, New Wave, and post-Punk. U2 and Simple Minds both consider The Call an influence in their music. COMEDY TRACK:My Bologna by "Weird Al" YankovicWe close out with Weird Al's meaty take on "My Sharona by" the Knack. What is a Knopfler? How does one Knopfle? Does one need any special equipment to do it? Are there any qualifications required??? Look, this is an avenue of inquiry that needs to be explored, but perhaps now is not the time. We're kicking off this season with plenty of guitar brililance and some low-key vocal performances. We're also getting a little shit-kicky and twangy here and there. Kev brought this band to the podcast, so he's ready to play the Strait man in this double-act, but will Corey be on board with a step back from the heavier stuff we've spent the last few months covering? Will he be wowed by the best-named drummer in rock history? Will he find nice things to say about John Illsley? The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and quite your messing around.Songs covered in this episode: "Down to the Waterline", "Water of Love", "Setting Me Up", "Six Blade Knife", "Southbound Again"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashTwitter: https://twitter.com/UCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.social Hosted on Acast. Eitan features the music of: The Doors, John Illsley, Jimmy Buffett, Hugo Westerdahl, and many more! Opening Music: MFSB (as always), the signature sound of East to West. Introduction by Eitan Battat: "I've mentioned in my last episode that I am slowing down. Yes, I am. Our chaotic world is stuck in ‘fast forward'. We're trying to cram so much into our day as Carrie Fischer and I'm quoting: “Even instant gratification takes too long”. Slowing down involves savoring the small moments, taking a deliberate pace in daily activities, and finding joy in the process rather than rushing toward the end goal. It's a mindful approach, emphasizing quality over speed. In his Ted Talk, Carl Honore' says: We used to dial and now we speed dial.We used walk and now we speed walk.We used to read and now we speed read as well as speed date. I'm reading Carl's book - the Slow Fix and I will share more thoughts, ideas, and nuggets from that book as you continue to listen to my program. So, I am truly discovering my inner tortoise. What does it mean daily? I'll tell you what it means. It means waking up earlier, so I have more time to eat my breakfast slowly sitting down and not standing. It means I may take a longer road to work. Not the longest. Just longer. It means I may not seek the shorter lane in the supermarket or on the road. Been there, done that! And please take me off the fast lane. So as always East to West program will have some ‘slow jams', music to shift down and slow your pace so you can truly enjoy the music, be mindful and nurture your soul." Their albums sold hundreds of millions of copies and their music--classics like "Sultans of Swing," "Romeo and Juliet," "Money for Nothing," and "Brothers in Arms"--is still played on every continent today. There was, quite simply, no bigger band on the planet throughout the eighties. In this powerful and entertaining memoir, founding member John Illsley gives the inside track on the most successful rock band of their time. Starting with his own unlikely beginnings in Middle England, he recounts the band's rise from humble origins to the best-known venues in the world, the working man's clubs to Madison Square Garden, sharing gigs with wild punk bands to rocking the Live Aid stage at Wembley. And woven throughout is an intimate portrait and tribute to his great friend Mark Knopfler, the band's lead singer, songwriter, and remarkable guitarist.Tracing an idea that created a phenomenal musical legacy, an extraordinary journey of joy and pain, companionship and surprises, this is John Illsley's life in Dire Straits.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://wellingtonsquarebooks.indiecommerce.com/book/9781635769159

Or click here for more information: Linktr.ee/BeatlesEarth ------------------------------- The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960, that comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all time and were integral to the development of 1960s counterculture and popular music's recognition as an art form. Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock 'n' roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways; the band later explored music styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock. As pioneers in recording, songwriting and artistic presentation, the Beatles revolutionised many aspects of the music industry and were often publicised as leaders of the era's youth and sociocultural movements. Led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles evolved from Lennon's previous group, the Quarrymen, and built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. The core trio of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act, and producer George Martin guided and developed their recordings, greatly expanding their domestic success after signing to EMI Records and achieving their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. As their popularity grew into the intense fan frenzy dubbed "Beatlemania", the band acquired the nickname "the Fab Four", with Epstein, Martin and other members of the band's entourage sometimes given the informal title of "fifth Beatle". By early 1964, the Beatles were international stars and had achieved unprecedented levels of critical and commercial success. They became a leading force in Britain's cultural resurgence, ushering in the British Invasion of the United States pop market, and soon made their film debut with A Hard Day's Night (1964). A growing desire to refine their studio efforts, coupled with the untenable nature of their concert tours, led to the band's retirement from live performances in 1966. At this time, they produced records of greater sophistication, including the albums Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966) and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), and enjoyed further commercial success with The Beatles (also known as "the White Album", 1968) and Abbey Road (1969). Heralding the album era, their success elevated the album to the dominant form of record consumption over singles; they also inspired a greater public interest in psychedelic drugs and Eastern spirituality, and furthered advancements in electronic music, album art and music videos. In 1968, they founded Apple Corps, a multi-armed multimedia corporation that continues to oversee projects related to the band's legacy. After the group's break-up in 1970, all principal members enjoyed success as solo artists and some partial reunions have occurred. Lennon was murdered in 1980 and Harrison died of lung cancer in 2001. McCartney and Starr remain musically active. The Beatles are the best-selling music act of all time, with estimated sales of 600 million units worldwide.[4][5] They hold the record for most number-one albums on the UK Albums Chart (15), most number-one hits on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart (20), and most singles sold in the UK (21.9 million). The band received many accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, four Brit Awards, an Academy Award (for Best Original Song Score for the 1970 documentary film Let It Be) and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and each principal member was inducted individually between 1994 and 2015. In 2004 and 2011, the group topped Rolling Stone's lists of the greatest artists in history. Time magazine named them among the 20th century's 100 most important people. Dire Straits were a British rock band formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals and lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Pick Withers (drums and percussion). They were active from 1977 to 1988 and again from 1990 to 1995. Their first single, "Sultans of Swing", from their 1978 self-titled debut album, reached the top ten in the UK and US charts. It was followed by hit singles including "Romeo and Juliet" (1981), "Private Investigations" (1982), "Twisting by the Pool" (1983), "Money for Nothing" (1985), and "Walk of Life" (1985). Their most commercially successful album, Brothers in Arms (1985), has sold more than 30 million copies; it was the first album to sell a million copies on compact disc[4][5] and is the eighth-bestselling album in UK history. According to the Guinness Book of British Hit Albums, Dire Straits have spent over 1,100 weeks on the UK albums chart, the fifth most of all time. Dire Straits' sound draws from various influences, including country, folk, the blues rock of J. J. Cale, and jazz.[7] Their stripped-down sound contrasted with punk rock and demonstrated a roots rock influence that emerged from pub rock. There were several changes in personnel, with Mark Knopfler and Illsley being the only members who lasted from the beginning of the band's existence to the end. After their first breakup in 1988, Knopfler told Rolling Stone: "A lot of press reports were saying we were the biggest band in the world. There's not an accent then on the music, there's an accent on popularity. I needed a rest." They disbanded for good in 1995, after which Knopfler launched a solo career full-time. He has since declined numerous reunion offers. Dire Straits were called "the biggest British rock band of the 80s" by Classic Rock magazine; their 1985–1986 world tour, which included a performance at Live Aid in July 1985, set a record in Australasia. Their final world tour from 1991 to 1992 sold 7.1 million tickets. Dire Straits won four Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards (Best British Group twice), two MTV Video Music Awards, and various other awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Dire Straits have sold over 120 million units worldwide, including 51.4 million certified units, making them one of the best-selling music artists. Brothers Mark and David Knopfler, from Newcastle in northeast England, and friends John Illsley and Pick Withers, from Leicester in the east midlands, formed Dire Straits in London in 1977. Withers was already a 10-year music business veteran, having been a session drummer for Dave Edmunds, Gerry Rafferty, Magna Carta and others through the 1970s; he was part of the group Spring, which recorded an album for RCA in 1971. At the time of the band's formation, Mark was working as an English teacher, Illsley was studying at Goldsmiths' College, and David was a social worker. Mark and Withers had both been part of the pub rock group Brewers Droop at different points in and around 1973. The band was initially known as the Café Racers. The name Dire Straits was coined by a musician flatmate of Withers, allegedly thought up while they were rehearsing in the kitchen of a friend, Simon Cowe, of Lindisfarne. In 1977, the group recorded a five-song demo tape which included their future hit single, "Sultans of Swing", as well as "Water of Love" and "Down to the Waterline".[18][19] After a performance at the Rock Garden in 1977, they took a demo tape to MCA in Soho but were turned down. They then went to DJ Charlie Gillett, presenter of Honky Tonk on BBC Radio London.[20] The band simply wanted advice, but Gillett liked the music so much that he played "Sultans of Swing" on his show. Two months later, Dire Straits signed a recording contract with the Vertigo division of Phonogram Inc. In October 1977, the band recorded demo tapes of "Southbound Again", "In the Gallery" and "Six Blade Knife" for BBC Radio London; in November, demo tapes were made of "Setting Me Up", "Eastbound Train" and "Real Girl". The original Dire Straits line-up in Hamburg, Germany (1978); L to R: John Illsley, Mark Knopfler, Pick Withers and David Knopfler The group's first album, Dire Straits, was recorded at Basing Street studios in Notting Hill, London in February 1978, at a cost of £12,500. Produced by Muff Winwood, it was first released in the United Kingdom on Vertigo Records, then a division of Phonogram Inc. It came to the attention of A&R representative Karin Berg, working at Warner Bros. Records in New York City. She felt that it was the kind of music audiences were hungry for, but only one person in her department agreed at first. Many of the songs on the album reflected Mark Knopfler's experiences in Newcastle, Leeds and London. "Down to the Waterline" recalled images of life in Newcastle; "In the Gallery" is a tribute to Leeds sculptor/artist Harry Phillips (father of Steve Phillips); "Wild West End" and "Lions" were drawn from Knopfler's early days in the capital. That year, Dire Straits began a tour as opening band for Talking Heads, after the re-released "Sultans of Swing" finally started to climb the UK charts. This led to a United States recording contract with Warner Bros. Records; before the end of 1978, Dire Straits had released their self-titled debut worldwide. They received more attention in the US, but also arrived at the top of the charts in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Dire Straits eventually went top 10 in every European country. The following year, Dire Straits embarked on their first North American tour. They played 51 sold-out concerts over a 38-day period. "Sultans of Swing" scaled the charts to No. 4 in the United States and No. 8 in the United Kingdom.[24][26] The song was one of Dire Straits' biggest hits and became a fixture in the band's live performances. Bob Dylan, who had seen the band play in Los Angeles, was so impressed that he invited Mark Knopfler and drummer Pick Withers to play on his next album, Slow Train Coming. Recording sessions for the group's second album, Communiqué, took place in December 1978 at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas. Released in June 1979, Communiqué was produced by Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett and went to No. 1 on the German album charts, with the debut album Dire Straits simultaneously at No. 3. In the United Kingdom, the album peaked at No. 5 in the album charts. Featuring the single "Lady Writer", the second album continued in a similar vein to the first and displayed the expanding scope of Knopfler's lyricism on the opening track, "Once Upon a Time in the West".[28] In the coming year, however, this approach began to change, along with the group's line-up.
Money For Nothing was a big number 1 hit in the US, was the first song played on MTV Europe, won a Grammy and MTV Video Music Awards too. On this day in 1985, it peaked in the UK charts, so we find out today from Dire Straits ever present member John Illsley, just how Sting came to provide those iconic backing vocals on the track! If you're a fan of Dire Straits, you have to check out the full interview with John Illsley on Episode 2 of Vintage Rock Pod!
DIRE STRAITS filled giant stadiums around the world and sold hundreds of millions of records. Throughout the eighties they were one of the biggest bands on the planet. Their classic songs - 'Sultans of Swing', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Money for Nothing', 'Brothers In Arms' - formed the soundtrack of a generation and live on today: still racking up sales, still being played on the radio on every continent. This week we devote the entire episode of A Breath of Fresh Air to Dire Straits' founding member and bassist, JOHN ILLSLEY who shares the story of one of the greatest live acts in rock history. Starting with his own unlikely beginnings in Middle England, he recounts the band's rise from humble origins in London's spit-and-sawdust pubs to the best-known venues in the world, the working man's clubs to Madison Square Garden, gigging with wild punk bands to the Live Aid stage at Wembley. From loading in their own equipment down beer chutes of London clubs to playing for seven million people on their final 1992 tour, he paints the expanding insanity of their global conquest, in a tale thick with unlikely characters, wild highs and inescapable downs. More than that, he describes the relationship that came through it all, which he values above any platinum disc. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radioflowok/message

John Illsley knew he wanted more out of life than a safe career working in the logging industry. His life took a major turn when he met the Knopfler brothers; Mark and David. With John taking the bass, and Pick Withers on drums, the band Dire Straits was formed. Through various lineup changes, John Illsley and Mark Knopfler remained the core members throughout the band's career. Dire Straits went on to win four Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, and two MTV Video Music Awards. They've sold an estimated 100 million units worldwide, making them one of the biggest bands of the 80s. John documents it all in his memoir, My Life In Dire Straits. We cover it all, including their awkward entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.Listen to the entire Dire Straits catalogue with a free month of Amazon Music courtesy of your friends at What Difference Does It Make. They sold 100 million albums, won four Grammys, three Brit awards and in 2018 were inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. Now founding band member, bassist and mainstay John Illsley has written the first official account of the band's fame, it's called My Life in Dire Straits. Why DSL?DSL*DIRE STRAITS LEGACY: the closest you're going to get! Here's why:Five members of our band recorded and toured as members of Dire Straits, and one of them, keyboardist Alan Clark was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a significant member of Dire Straits. Our bass player, Trevor Horn also knows a thing or two about music; he is widely regarded as the world's greatest record producer. Our guitarist, Phil Palmer who is regarded by his peers as one of the world's greatest, played on Dire Straits' On Every Street record and world tour and the On the Night live record, and features on hundreds of records of other major acts. Our percussion player, again one of the world's best, Danny Cummings also played on Dire Straits' On Every Street record and world tour and the On the Night live record, and has since worked extensively with Mark Knopfler, playing drums in his band for many years and percussion on his latest world tour. Our world renowned sax player, Mel Collins played on Dire Straits' Love Over Gold, Alchemy and Twisting by the Pool records as well as touring for several years with Dire Straits, and over his long career has played on countless other major records, and he's currently touring the world with reformed King Crimson. And who can forget Jack Sonni, Dire Straits' “man in the red coat” dancing around the stage on the Brothers in Arms world tour and Live Aid concert? He's with us too! Our frontman, Marco Caviglia is one of the world's leading authorities on the music of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler's guitar style, and an accomplished and fine guitarist and frontman. And Primiano Di Biase is one of Italy's most sought after keyboard players. We are not Dire Straits; Dire Straits cannot exist without Mark Knopfler. But we are the next best thing. We can all listen to the records, but the last time you'll have heard the music of Dire Straits played live by the musicians who played on those records and tours, was back in 1992.DSL Dire Straits Legacy brings the music of Dire Straits played by musicians who made it, to fans who have been starved of hearing it for far too long.Since its inception in 2008, the following 7 members of Dire Straits have joined this band: Dire Straits Hall of Fame members John Illsley, Alan Clark and Pick Withers, and Dire Straits Legends Phil Palmer, Mel Collins, Jack Sonni and Danny Cummings. And over the years we've attracted some superb musicians from other bands including Steve Ferrone from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who is widely regarded as the world's greatest rock drummer, and Trevor Horn who as well as being a great bass player is widely regarded as the world's greatest record producer. As you can imagine, this is one hell of a band! This is a supergroup, although the guys would never regard themselves as such.We love playing together, and because we played a part in the creation of the music of Dire Straits and played hundreds of shows with Dire Straits, the music is infused into our souls.DSL* Dire Straits Legacy: the closest you're going to get!And it doesn't stop there: A couple of years ago, we decided we should make a record of our own, of our own music. So we did. It's called 3 Chord Trick, and we called the band Legacy.
Although they had been steadily growing in popularity since their debut in the mid-70's, Dire Straits would become a household name with their fifth studio album, Brothers In Arms. Between the catchy hooks accessible on both rock and adult contemporary radio, and the video-driven appeal of the group on MTV, DIre Strats became an arena group in 1985.This album found Dire Straits composed of John Illsley on bass, Terry Williams on drums, Alan Clark on piano and organ, Guy Fletcher on synthesizer, and of course the primary driver, songwriter, and co-producer for the album was Mark Knopfler. Additionally, Jazz drummer Omar Hakim was brought in to re-record much of the percussion work, though Williams remained the drummer for the band.Knopfler was quite the perfectionist when it came to sound, and this album would be the first to be recorded entirely digitally. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first compact disc to sell a million copies. The success Dire Straits had with this album may have led to the groups undoing. Knopfler was uncomfortable with the fame, thinking that people were coming to the shows for the celebrity rather than the music. The group would take a hiatus following the "Brothers In Arms" tour, and would produce one more studio album before disbanding. Knopfler would go on to produce solo work as well as collaborate with other artists including Eric Clapton , Thomas Dolby, and Bob Dylan. Dire Straits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. So Far AwayThis is the opening track on the album and the lead single in the UK, released in April of 1985, ahead of the album. It would be the third single in the US where it hit number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is about carrying on a long-distance relationship.Your Latest TrickA melancholy deep cut, this song features Randy Brecker on trumpet and Michael Brecker on saxophone. It is clearly referencing prostitution, but it has a feel of loneliness and emptiness. Some say it is about a relationship and some say it is about society in general. The night is over, everyone is going home, and the guy is left alone wondering what happened. One WorldAnother deep cut, and more blues-oriented. "Can't get no remedy on my TV, it's nothing but the same old news. Well, they can't find a way to be one world in harmony. Can't get no antidote for blues." Tony Levin was brought in to play bass on this one. Walk of LifeThis hit almost didn't make the album. Co-producer Neil Dorfsman voted against its being included, but the band outvoted him. It made it to number 7 on the US charts, and was one of their biggest commercial hits in the UK, peaking at number 2 there. It is about the street musicians in London playing standards in the subways. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:This is Not America by Pat Metheny and David Bowie (from the motion picture The Falcon and the Snowman)This show about American kids turned Soviet spies was in the theaters in February 1985, and this song was on the charts in May. STAFF PICKS:Obsession by AnimotionWayne kicks off our staff picks with a synth pop hit that was a staple of every dance floor in 1985. Animotion covered this song, originally performed by Holly Knight and Michael Des Barres in 1983. The song was developed at first thinking about the obsession of drugs, but it transformed into an obsession with a person when it was done. Smuggler's Blues by Glenn FreyBrian's staff pick was well known at the time from Miami Vice. "You be cool for 20 hours and I'll pay you 20 grand." One of the things that made Miami Vice such a popular draw was its use not just of cool actors in Miami, but also using cameos from the music world. Glenn Frey appeared as a smuggler in the episode where "Smuggler's Blues" was played.Sussudio by Phil CollinsRob's staff pick is the lead track from Collins' third solo album "No Jacket Required." The drum machine and horns made this a polarizing song, with lots of people loving it and lots hating it. It was a big hit in the summer of 1985, and Phil Collins has mentioned that this song is the one most often sung to him when strangers approach.Marlene on the Wall by Suzanne VegaBruce closes out the staff picks with a song inspired by Marlene Dietrich. Singer songwriter Suzanne Vega heard Dietrich responding to a controversial statement, "You have lead many men to death with your body." with the perfect response, "Give me a kiss." This was the lead track off Vega's debut album, dealing with loneliness and a strained relationship. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Lady In My Life by Stanley JordanJazz guitarist Stanley Jordan covers a deep cut from Michael Jackson's Thriller album to close out this week's podcast.
The Fixx - Reach The Beach On this episode, we are joined by guest-host Paul Korn to review the second album by the band from London, England. Our songs of the week are Candlebox’ “10,000 Horses”, Lionsault’s “Reckless” and John Illsley’s “High Stakes.” We finish with Lee’s song “Story Plot.” Have fun listening, everybody. Cheers! #thefixx #newwave

Vamos a escuchar ahora un último corte del álbum: In the gallery. Chicos… Chicas… ¡!!BUENAS VIBRACIONES¡¡¡

May 2020: With over 100 million albums, four Grammies, three Brits, an Ivor Novello Award and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, John Illsley has done it all. Playing a pivotal role in the success of Dire Straits, John has been credited with the creation of the band’s original sound and is the only member, other than Mark Knopfler, to make it all the way from the first album in 1977 to the final concert in 1992. With the band a little more than a memory, John has released numerous solo albums, has a tour where he reveals all about his time in Dire Straits, and spends his relaxation time producing excellent pieces of art. #JohnIllsley #DireStraits #Covid19 #interview Image (c) Judy Totton

They were active from 1977 to 1988 and again from 1991 to 1995. The band became one of the world's best-selling music artists, with album sales of over 100 million.[1] Their first hit single "Sultans of Swing", from their self-titled debut album released in 1978, reached the top ten in the US chart and became a top ten hit in the UK the following year. The band released several hit singles in the 1980s, such as "Romeo and Juliet" (1981), "Private Investigations" (1982), "Twisting by the Pool" (1983), "Money for Nothing" (1985), and "Walk of Life" (1986).[2] Their most commercially successful album was Brothers in Arms (1985), which has sold more than 30 million copies and was the first album to sell a million copies on the compact disc (CD) format.[3][4] Dire Straits' sound was drawn from a wide variety of musical influences including jazz, folk, and country, as well as the blues-rock of J. J. En este programa rendimos homenaje a nuestro compañero de las ondas Javier Alcalá.

An exploration into the enduring appeal of the Dire Straits classic, Brothers in Arms. Although thought to have been written by Mark Knopfler in response to the Falklands war in the mid 80's, it's a piece that people now associate with many other conflicts ; military, personal and social. Dire Straits bass player, John Illsley explains why it remains such a special piece for the band, while Marines chaplain, Nigel Beardsley, recalls the important part it's played in the lives of so many soldiers in Iran and Afghanistan and why it's now often heard at military funerals. The Irish playwright, Sam Millar describes why he based a very personal play around the song and Snuffy Walden, music director of the hit American TV show, The West Wing, talks about how the series writer, Aaron Sorkin insisted on it being used in its entirety during a crucial episode. Prof Alan Moore of Surrey University explains how it's Knopfler's brilliant use of harmony that gives the song the sense of yearning that has made it into one of the most enduring pop songs of the last century.
